I came to Andrew Bryant last year after dealing with a chaotic separation. I had two children with my ex and she had made my life extremely difficult with communication, scheduling, doctor appointments, schooling and multiple other issues. Heather took me as a client and immediately my life got easier, she communicated with my ex during the entire process and made sure everything went as smoothly as possible. She was extremely professional and got me fully prepared for trial. She walked us through each step we were going to take during the trial and eased us through the entire situation. By the end of the trial the judge removed all my child support obligations and gave me full 50/50 rights. Since the case she has checked in with us multiple times and made sure everything is still running smoothly, which it is! The last 5 months since the trial have been so much easier dealing with my ex now that everything is set in stone. We are very happy with all the work Heather and the the team at Andrew Bryant did for us! 10/10 would definitely recommend!

My name is Rachel Newton. In January 2024 I hired Heather Atkinson to represent me in my child custody case. Heather and Donna (paralegal) were wonderful representation. I knew they cared about myself and my case. Opposing council, representing the other party, was Greg Maceau. In about August 2024, Heather contacted me to let me know that Mr. Maceau would be moving over to Andrew Bryant’s law firm, and that it would be ok because there would be a “Chinese wall” implemented so Mr. Maceau would not have access to my case. My trial was set for October 2024, and two days prior to trial, Ms. Atkinson was disqualified as representing me as my lawyer because Andrew Bryant had hired Mr. Maceau to his law firm. Andrew Bryant and Mr. Maceau had told Ms. Atkinson this was ok, but upon reviewing rule, did not obtain the other party’s signature saying it was ok for Ms. Atkinson to continue to represent me after Mr. Maceau moved to the law firm. Ms. Atkinson called to apologize about the situation, and I had to find and retain a new lawyer, my trial date canceled and postponed. Obviously this was very distressing after already waiting for 10 months to go to trial, and spending a lot of money and time. Andrew Bryant could have waited two months to hire Mr. Maceau. He could have notified me that I needed to find a new lawyer prior to paying his lawyers to prep for my trial. Andrew Bryant never called me, tried to remediate the situation, or provide me assistance, even though this occurred because of his negligence and oversight. All I got was an invoice for $5k for my attorney and paralegal prepping for trial, and then turned around and had to pay another $5k retainer to hire a new attorney. Not to mention the lawyer fees that have accrued for the new lawyer to set a new trial date, have a new status conference hearing, prep for trial, etc. etc. While I would always recommend Heather and Donna as representation, I do not think it is the best idea to hire Andrew Bryant as your representing law firm. It might just cost you an extra $15k to your lawyer fees.

Disabled veteran and first time reviewer of anyone. Stay away from this law firm. If you read the low reviews on Google, you'll get the most accurate outlook on the work ethic of this lawyer. I had a restraining order filed on me based on false claims. I had a police incident report practically proving the claims made were false and on my initial meeting, he was quick to say that he would subpoena the police officer that responded to the incident and that he would get the case dismissed. For this he wanted $1,500. As it was part of a divorce with no kids and complicated finances, he charged a total of $3,500 for both. I spoke with a half dozen law firms before going with his since the task was simple enough that even I myself could have done it but since I couldn't afford mistakes, I instead made the mistake of hiring this lawyer. The day before the hearing I had to call him since he had not contacted me regarding the case or his process or anything at all. The reason was that he hadn't done anything- He walked in to the court room less than 5 minutes before the hearing began and asked me questions about the restraining order which I provided to him weeks before. Apparently he took the time to read it right before the hearing itself because instead of fulfilling his promise, he just asked for a continuance or postponement if you're unfamiliar (and billed me for his appearance). The next hearing went exactly the same way, except it was the other party that requested the continuance (and he billed me for his appearance). After I contacted him demanding he file the evidence I provided to him and ask what his plan was for the next hearing, his response was that he was "hoping the other party doesn't show up". He got his wish (and billed me for his appearance) and the case was dismissed without prejudice after him having done nothing and with a smile that implied a victory, said that even though it can be filed again, he would just take care of it then. The next problem was the response to a divorce filing. His paralegal called me multiple times the day it was due, the last of which occurred after 4:00PM while she ironed out the details. The response was filed shortly after that and less than an hour from the deadline, which tells me he wouldn't even have time to proofread it. Although his staff is very diligent , friendly and competent, the opposite is all that can be said for this lawyer. In the first hearing dealing with jurisdiction of my divorce, he lost. For context, the other party represents themselves and is a person in their early 20s with zero college and legal training and that's who he lost to. (and he billed me for all of this) I arranged a meeting in person after this to try to understand why all of this occurred the way it did. The first thing he did in the meeting is remind himself of who I was and my case (he never took the time to learn either of my cases), and after my first query that questioned his level of competence, he immediately offered to withdraw from my case. Having already made the decision to fire him, I pressed forward in the conversation asking him why he failed to get my restraining order case dismissed, to try to get reassurance that he wouldn't lose to court against this person a second time. Instead of providing any explanation, he just reiterated that he would withdraw from my case. I haven't been invoiced for this month yet but I have a feeling I was billed for that as well. The conversation took place over 8 minutes and what I have written here was all he said. The ordeal I've just related cost me over $3,000. And due to his failure to withdraw from my case within a deadline, the opposing party is filing a complaint with the BAR. I am filing one of my own for obvious reasons. I don't see any responses to either positive or negative reviews on google, so use that as reference to his method of addressing really just about anything.

Jason was phenomenal! He listened to my issue and provided cost-effective solutions for my debt. I must admit- It is very difficult to come face-to-face with debt; It hurts the ego and has left me with sleepless nights of worry and impending doom. Jason asked the right questions to drill down to my legal rights. He provided me with COMFORT and a plan of action!

5 Star Review! I have worked with Mike twice now over the course of 7 years. He was kind in helping me feel at ease, took care of everything paperwork wise and calmed me when I was upset. This case lasted over a year the second time. He explained things in layman’s terms for our family and really cares about the families and individuals he works for. He made the virtual meetings very accommodating. Thank you Mike for winning the case! We truly value you and all of your diligent hard work for us. We can finally rest easy and look forward to our futures. You are amazing!

I'm extremely grateful to have had Mike recommended to me by a friend for my divorce. The process itself took much longer than needed (my fault), but he was patient and very helpful through the entire time. He clearly explained the process and gave recommendations on how to proceed and made an already tough time easier. I was able to get the outcome I was looking for but Mike was straightforward with the possibilities right from the start of the different ways it could go. I'll definitely recommend Mike to anyone needing a lawyer.

The Gasper Law Group, and specifically Randy Koonce, was incredibly helpful in assisting my family and me with our estate plans. Due to unforeseen medical circumstances, we needed a quick turnaround, and Randy and his team exceeded our expectations. We visited on Monday, and by Wednesday, we were reviewing and signing our estate plans, which included a Last Will and Testament, General Durable Power of Attorney, and Medical Power of Attorney. Randy was thorough and took the time to answer all our questions. I highly recommend this firm and their team for anyone in need of estate planning services. Thank you Randy, Therese, and Pam for your help and for putting our minds at ease.

I had some potential landlord concerns after my brother passed away and I was left to handle his estate. I reached out to Fortenberry to prepare for any potential legal problems I could run into with the landlord. There was a bit of confusion during the beginning of the consultation; but once it was cleared up, Jot helped me out and he got an agreement put together for me. Luckily, I ended up not having any issues with the landlord and the sale of my brother's property processed smoothly. Having Fortenberry available and ready to assist me right away was a huge relief during this time. Just knowing that I had a legal representative I could reach out to in case I had questions or ran into trouble really helped me get through a difficult situation. Thank you!

I hired this attorney through Upright Law and sorry I did. When I went in to sign my papers in the beginning, I felt rushed and alone as she was doing something else and left me to sign papers in the office by myself. After bankruptcy was discharged, I was trying to contact her via phone and email for weeks to ask when I would be getting my discharge papers and to ask a question about my case with no reply. Her secretary apologized today and that is when I called Upright Law to complain to them about her and to ask when I can get my discharge papers. Upright law will be sending me my discharge papers via email so I can finally get on with my life!

A Life-Changing Attorney: Elizabeth Vanatta I am writing this review as a testament to the exceptional legal representation and guidance I have received from Attorney Elizabeth Vanatta since 2020. Throughout our journey together, Elizabeth has been a constant source of support, expertise, and care, helping me navigate the darkest times of my life and emerge stronger, wiser, and more determined than ever. Elizabeth's unwavering dedication to her clients is truly inspiring. She has a unique ability to balance empathy with tough love, pushing me to be a better father and individual, even when the road ahead seemed uncertain. Her mantra, "She can't help those who are not trying to help themselves," has stuck with me and become a guiding principle in my life. It's a reminder that with hard work, determination, and the right guidance, anyone can overcome adversity and achieve their goals. One of Elizabeth's greatest strengths is her tireless work ethic. She is always available, including weekends, to address my concerns and provide valuable advice. Her ability to think creatively and develop innovative solutions to complex problems has been invaluable to my case. Time and time again, she has demonstrated a deep understanding of the law and a mastery of the litigation process, consistently presenting well-researched and well-prepared arguments in court. What sets Elizabeth apart from other attorneys I have worked with is her genuine care and concern for her clients. She is not just a lawyer; she is a trusted advisor, a confidante, and a role model. Her passion for justice and her commitment to fighting for what is right are evident in everything she does. I have witnessed her in litigation numerous times, and her preparation, expertise, and poise under pressure are truly impressive. If you are considering hiring an attorney, I would highly recommend Elizabeth Vanatta. However, I must caution that she is not for everyone. If you are not willing to take her advice, listen to her guidance, and put in the effort required to achieve a successful outcome, then you may not be the best fit for her services. But if you are willing to work hard, trust her expertise, and follow her lead, I have no doubt that you will achieve exceptional results. In my opinion, Elizabeth Vanatta is the top attorney in Colorado Springs. Her professionalism, caring nature, and unparalleled preparation make her a formidable opponent in the courtroom. I have seen her present binders full of evidence, meticulously organized and thoroughly researched, to support her arguments. Her attention to detail and commitment to excellence are traits that set her apart from other attorneys

Sam was a very rambunctious easy going lawyer that has done his best from what i can tell to help me in any way bring out the truth about my case! Without actually knowing and or experiencing what I've through he could never completely understand my circumstances of this bogis case but he was at least willing to try and empathize with my horrible experiences. The case is although still pending but will finally hopefully have an outcome coming up the end of April and i hope and pray that we will finally bring some of the truth out! And i will hopefully be released of this charge for my own well being as will as that of my beautiful baby boys in my case! I will write a new review once the case has come to its conclusion. Pray for me if you read this and believe i deserve this blessing from god and sam!!! Thanks for reading and hire Sam he's one of Springs best criminal defense attorney!!! Thank you Sam no matter the Outcome I'll always appreciate what you tried to do and the ear you lent one too many times! I will give you 5 starsonce i do a review! Especially when i know and see with my own eyes you did EVERYTHING POSSIBLE FOR ME! But the4 stars will remain regardless!!!! Thanks again......

I wanted to take a moment to make sure I recognize my Attorney Pat Marrison. At first I didn´t think I had a case but thought I would take a chance and request a consult with her. Marrison Law had handled my divorce over 10 years ago. My ex husband was retired military and Marrison Law made sure I received what I was entitled to when we originally divorced. My ex decided he did not want to continue to make payments. We were married for more than 10 years. For those of you out there that don´t know what you are entitled to as a spouse to a military service member. I would encourage you to use Marrison law. Attorney Marrison took my call at the end of her busy day and advised me on what I could do before hiring her services. She is truly a woman of integrity and highly experienced in military divorces. It played out just as she said. She did not have to do that. Thank you, Attorney Marrison thanks to your free consultation I was able to get my ex to start sending my payments again. Make sure you know your rights property and Alimony are 2 different types of payments. Attorney Marrison is incredibly patient, and kind. She will answer all of your concerns. She will help alleviate any doubt and fears of how to proceed. I highly recommend her firm and if I have any issues again I will surely hire her as my attorney. Thank You Attorney Marrison and God Bless you.

I had a horrible experience with this lawyer and I was not the only one. My best friend hired her to help with a divorce. My friends' husband disappeared for over 5 years and showed up after he found out that he could make a profit since their house gained value. He only paid $ 2000 for a lawyer and received 50% of all assets after being gone and not paying any bills for over 5 years. My friend got the same 50% and paid Patricia 3 times more. I hired her and never went to her office to discuss my case. She filed my divorce forms online which cost little fees but she charged thousands of dollars for a phone call. She does not care about her clients. I fired her and had to pay a high charge to get rid of her services. She is extremely unprofessional.

You'll notice that her ratings have only gone downhill in the more recent years, and this is not a coincidence. She worked on a case for my father-in-law back in 2015 and was exceptional in the courtroom. Based on her past performance, I used her for my child custody support hearing in 2020 and a landlord dispute around the same time, and she was nowhere near the same level of prepaid or willing to argue my points in the courtroom (I honestly think she didn't prepare until the morning of and it showed). She just didn't have any fight in her and was more interested in compromises even in the face of significant evidence in my favor. She will not look at your case until the day of court and still ask you questions that you clearly explained to her in email and other communications that she can reread. Oh, but don't worry, she will charge you for everything you send her, even though she clearly won't even read it during that time. In my child custody hearing the day before court, she asked me to send her all the relevant messages between me and my ex. I already sent them a month prior, and I highlighted the details I thought were important. I was charged for emailing her the month prior because it is "communication," then I got charged again for the same when I resent her the same emails. After hiring this attorney, I am almost $10,000 in debt, and she gave my ex everything her attorney asked for in court and did not (DID NOT!) put up any fight or present my side. I left the courtroom feeling like my side was completely unheard. I was just shocked by the whole thing and found it unbelievable. For how much she charges, you can find a better attorney.

She is a nightmare, she is an alcoholic who is incompetent and plays ball with the opposing attorneys. She will not have your interest in mind only billing you as much as possible. I had to fire her and file a complaint with the Colorado attorneys board. She sat on my case till the last minute which made it impossible for an applet level attorney to enter to fix what she let go because of her personal bias against me. It resulted in me losing custody of my children. She shouldn't have licensure to practice. Stay far away

I hired Tammy through Marble Law-neither of which I would recommend. I paid $5000 for a RESPONSE to a petition of divorce. When it recently came time to do mediations-I was told by both marble and Tammy that the service was not included and was completely blindsided. When I talked to Tammy, she advised to talk to Marble. When I talked to Marble, they advised to talk to Tammy. I feel completely used, disregarded, and out of the loop in MY OWN case. I have been working with Tammy since June- Not once have I met her. She was difficult the entire time to get ahold of, her paralegal team was not friendly anytime I called, Tammy missed meetings, and wouldn't respond to me for almost WEEKS at a time. I went into her office one time to sign papers-and they didn't even have the correct address on google! So as a single mom, with her 4 year old, was sent to two different places. (small side note-but shows how irresponsible this office really was) To her credit, she tried to make it right once or twice, but it seemed that every time she would try to make it right, she would follow it up with another wrong pretty short there after-and I would be brought to tears from how upset I was again and again. I am disappointed in Tammy and her team, and am disappointed in Marble law. In my opinion, I would steer clear of both of them if you are seeking legal help-you won't find it here.

Hired for a military appeal which had strict deadlines. In response, he avoided me until those deadlines had surpassed and then sent me files that I requested months in advance. He did not do anything I hired him for and made the excuse that he was too busy and did not have an assistant. He’s always had an excuse; meanwhile, I went with out proper legal representation.

Hired Frank to work my appeals because he came recommended from my defense attorney. I think he is worn out and no longer motivated. He failed me, did not communicate with me at all, especially in the end when my appeal was denied, he dropped all communication and didnt have the decency to call me to discuss. Not impressed with his effort at all. Waste of money and a waste of time. Please spend more money on a lawyer who has gumption. Frank Spinner does not.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
