Realistic results for a difficult case where children and mother were overdue to reunite. The communication and professionalism was top notch. After years of prayer and waiting, could not be more greatful for choosing Stacey Graus to use resources to get a clearer picture to our Judge. Forever thankful!

I have got into the big problem and it was my first time I wanted to deal with courthouse. He was the first attorney I contacted to take care of the problem I had faced with. Although my case was the big deal and I could get into the big problem, he confidentially made me relax and ensured me he will be able of take care of it. After couple days I accidentally saw a review about him in this website which made me worried about the attorney I choosed. I have consulted with another attorney about my problem and he made me enormously nerves about the case. Although Ryan was out of town, I contacted him couple of times and he was available anytime I wanted to get some information and made me calm down and told me he knows what he is doing and he will take care of the problem. Thanks god I trusted him and he made me get ride of the big problem I had. what I can say about him is his proficiency in the area of his work and also availability to talk to his client almost every time you need him.

This is the first customer review I can see anywhere for this guy. The only review at all is from another lawyer who is probably his buddy. Ryan is not proffessional never knows a thing about the case. enjoys vacations when i don't have any idea what is going on. My family members nor I have had a clue what was going on at all for this whole case. I was pressured my family to use this lawyer. I have given chance after chance, just to be let down. I have been open and talkative to the point that he interrupts me and just startings speaking as if he is speaking with another lawyer (which i am not), open about facts from the start, i was told last week "if you had mentioned that earlier on we could've worked with that". Ryan was told and told and told about many things. I do not mean to seem slanderous but Ryan needs a new set of hearing aids and a reality check. My family and I don't speak in a profane manner, he sure does, i have found it to be very irritating and unproffessional. I feel like i could go on and on, long story short. THINK AGAIN! THEN LOOK AGAIN! I don't think the teddy bear look he portrays helps either to be honest. He has no guts, it is like Paddington is representing me! If my family would have been OK with it I have been representing myself a good while ago, since I myself cannot afford a lawyer. If you want somebody to get you a plea agreement mayyyybe worth a shot, if you have money and time and faith don't forget faith. If you want to win a trial RUN AWAY! The only time we ever met or spoke was at court, very hard to reach on HIS CELL PHONE and does not return calls or even update you. Work does not appear to be his priority, text is the only way I can reach him. Feels like I'm back in high school talking to a young girl. I hope my review will be helpful in some way.Good luck

Was unprofessional. Always in a hurry. Didn't do what she was asked to do. Was interested in protecting Judge's clerk from her mistake re: my case being made known to Judge rather than helping my defense. Displayed lack of interest for my concerns and questions during court proceedings. Wouldn't explain sentence to me. Treated me in a very rude manner during my confusion re: the above during court proceedings. Spoke with a raised voice in a mean manner showing on her face and pointed angrily rather than explain to me what just happened. Blew off my request to comunicate my needs to relative present at proceedings.

I hired Harry on the advice of a friend in the business, and it ended up being a big mistake. I ended up hiring another attorney half way through the case. His follow up was terrible, he wasn't prepared for hearings, he doesn't have the best interpersonal skills, and I definitely wouldn't recommend him to anyone. Other attorneys come in and speak with their clients before the court session. Not Harry. He spends his time talking to colleagues so you have no idea what is going on when your case does come up. The 2nd attorney I hired did more in two weeks than Harry had done in 6 months. This is just a personal observation, but to me it seems as though he's checked out. Simply collecting a paycheck and not doing anything to earn it. I did read some of the previous posts regarding him and did have my concerns. I was told you can't believe everything you hear on these sites which I still believe to be true. One or two disgruntled people shouldn't be able to destroy a reputation. Unfortunately in this instance, based on my experience, I have to agree with other reviews. He comes unprepared, doesn't follow up, and has no strategy. Much like another review the argument he used in the pretrial motion was laughable. I would have done a better job arguing the motion. It clearly stated in the police report I was in a center turn lane not once but twice. Last I checked there is nothing illegal about being in a center turn lane. These facts weren't brought up. No pictures were shown to show it was in fact a center turn lane. We had the officers hand drawn description of the lanes which he drew from memory. I wasted time and money with him. Buyer beware!

I'm going to echo a bit of what the other reviewer said in his review. If you hire Harry Hellings expect to talk to him during your initial consultation and then to see him the day of your trial. The rest of the time you will be communicating through and with an artificially endowed, blonde receptionist. At each of my several court appearances leading up to my trial a random attorney from their office showed up that I had never met or talked to before. If you are expecting somebody that is the least bit technically savvy, you really need to look elsewhere. Harry actually needed somebody to put the DVD of my arrest in the player at his office to view it. He asked me to take some pictures at the arrest scene. I showed up in court with them in digital format along with some video that I had shot, neither of which was used because Harry cannot handle the media system in the courtroom. In this day and age I find not being able to use the latest technology simply unacceptable. The argument that he used during my trial was almost laughable, and I think he just came into court and figured he was going to wing it. It will be two years in a couple of days since I got my DUI and not only do I still kick myself for hiring him, but I really kick myself for not asking for some of my retainer money back after the trial. It was just that disappointing.

Harry was HORRIBLE!!! Very rarely does he show up in court for your hearing,s he sends some otehr guy that is probably just out of law school. All he cares about is getting his money. I gave hime close to a $1,000.00, and he didn't do a thing. I asked his secretary after I paid the retainer ifhe would take payments for the balance, she said as long as you pay him something you should be fine. Well she was wrong, he filed a motion to withdrawl as my counsel and left me high and dry. I will be filing a motion for accounting myself and will request a refund. He does not care about his clients all he cares about is getting his money and that is it. I should hav known better, don't ever your this man as your attorney!!!!!!!!!

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
