You can't find a more patient, knowledgeable and informative immigration lawyer. Mr. Mirque thought out of the box and helped where many other lawyers could not. He had expertise in the tedious immigration visas that only caused me headaches before. In less than a week having consulted with him, my husband was approved for a visa. Mr. Mirque is definitely on your side and can navigate the visa process from stat to finish. Whether it is is B2, I130, green card or any other immigration needs for your loved family member to come to the USA.... he is your immigration lawyer. HIGHLY recommended!

Rob supposedly applied for my husband’s US citizenship 4 years ago and we are still waiting. Have gotten no response except for when we requested a copy of his file he gave us a bill for $3,000 for back charges and another $3,000 bill for copy charges before he would give us the file. The file didn’t include a receipt number which you need to check on your application. He won’t return calls, emails, texts, notes, and is never in his “office”. This has now set our family back 4 years & caused a TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF STRESS FOR EVERYONE including jeopardizing my husbands job on multiple occasions. He won’t even respond to our new immigration lawyer who has sent letters, called etc. Why would you do this to our family?????? There is no sign of any application in the USCIS system. Also when my husband tried to renew his green card which was sent to our old address and thrown out by the new owner, Rob told him to reapply not use the I-90 form for lost or stolen cards so they denied that and he has to reapply for that as well. Mistakes, horrible communication, and treated my family like he couldn’t be bothered. I don’t understand how he doesn’t have more bad reviews, but I have seen the others online as well, and their story is very similar to ours. We have had enough, we will have to resort to solving this legally.

I was looking for a competent and knowledgable lawyer to help me put together the adjustment of status (green card) application for my husband, and I am so glad that I found Robert Mirque! He clearly has extensive experience in immigration law and knows the ins and outs of all of the many forms that one has to file in this confusing process! We just had one consultation so far, but I am looking forward to working with him going forward. He was very generous with his time and answered all of my questions in an extremely thorough manner. He patiently explained to me the background and logic behind the various steps that we will be working through, so that I could have a strong understanding of how to navigate the process. He helped me to understand what parts of the application matter most so I know where to focus my time and energy. He also warned me regarding what to watch out for down the line so I know what to think about in advance. I feel very confidant that Robert Marque will help us to make this process as smooth and comprehensible as possible.

Mark handled my DUI in Michigan, which was a little unique as an Out-of-State driver. His knowledge of the law, likely scenarios and outcomes and preparation, calmed my nerves and gave me confidence. He is straightforward and realistic. He was able to negotiate my higher-level DUI down to base level, which saved me a lot of time and money. He was also responsive after the fact when I had some other administrative-related questions. You will be in good hands if you need help with a DUI/OUI in Michigan if you choose Mark.

Above all things, thank you Kelly for your unparalleled professionalism, and for handling my case with expertise. We won, and it was your dedication that made it happen. Kelly provided a clean, no b.s approach while sharing empathy through out my case. He was clear, understanding and tentative. The defendant was accused of wrongful conversion of personal property, fraud, silent fraud, breach of contract (express and implied), quantum meruit, unjust enrichment and promissory estoppel. Kelly is highly unprofessional, misogynistic, lazy, and unresponsive. I had to hound him and his assistant relentlessly for case updates, and would go several weeks at a time before getting a vague, angry, "What do you want now?" response from him. Does not like being held accountable. 10 months into my case with zero action taken from Mr. Lambert, aside from taking my $2700 retainer, sending me improperly documented time sheets, and stating I'd need to pay another full retainer if I wanted him to continue doing nothing, I fired him and hired new counsel, who settled my case within a week. Avoid him at all costs. - - - *Updated to respond to Mr. Lambert's reply, which appears to align quite well with my statement regarding unprofessionalism* It also appears as though he's only responded so aggressively to other women who have been dissatisfied with his services, or lack thereof. I retained Kelly January 6, 2023 for a custody case. He waited a week to file entry of appearance January 13, 2023. The order I hired him to assist me with the terms of, and file a motion to further amend custody terms, ordered myself and defendant to select a mediator within 14 days. January 17th, 11 days after I retained him, I still hadn't heard from him, so I called. We spoke very briefly - the time log shows .2 billable hours. I had called a couple times in February and spoke to Ian Irish, his former assistant, providing him with my updated phone number and asking if Kelly had updates. Ian was also unprofessional and rude, and quite apparently failed to document our conversations, as well as my new phone number. March 7th, 2023 comes around, and I hadn't spoken with Kelly again about my case, more than 2 months after I hired him. The terms of the aforementioned order, dated 2/3/23, required mediation to be completed within 45 days. We hadn't spoken to be able select a mediator within the 14 days as ordered, so I grew worried mediation wouldn't take place within the ordered timeframe either. Mediation finally took place May 4, via zoom for 1.5 hours. The majority of my mediation session, Mr. Lambert was fielding calls for other cases. Mediation ended 1.5 hours in when Kelly asked the mediator for a private breakout room, wherein he asked HER to tell me he had an appointment downtown and had to leave. - - - I wasn't required to show up to court, because your motion to terminate your representation was withdrawn when my new counsel, whom I retained mid-October, reached out to inform you they'd been working with me. I could go on in great detail, but, Mr. Lambert, you aren't worth the energy. My sentiment remains that you also aren't worth hiring.

Mr Upshaw was the court appointed lawyer for my friend and he did not defend him at all. During the trial he did not contest any of the evidence or object to anything the prosecution presented in court. He would not communicate with his client or plan ahead. He just kept him in the dark. As a result, he was convicted and Mr Upshaw was still not communicating or contesting anything and he failed to file for papers in time and seems like he’s working for the court that paid him and not for my friend. He’s not as aggressive as he should be. As a result my friend might be going to jail for a long time. NO thanks to you Mr. Upshaw

I cannot say enough positive things about attorney Geoffrey Upshaw. My son was facing a serious legal issue and Mr. Upshaw was his court appointed lawyer . From the moment we met him, he was professional, knowledgeable, and took the time to truly understand the situation. Throughout the entire legal process, Mr. Upshaw was incredibly efficient and always kept us informed of any updates or developments, still does . He worked tirelessly on my son's case. His attention to detail and dedication to his clients is truly commendable. I am so grateful for the great work that Attorney Upshaw did for my son. He is an exceptional attorney and I would highly recommend him to anyone in need of legal representation. Thank you, Mr. Upshaw, for all that you have done for our family.

Britt Cobbs has proven herself to be an exceptional attorney, particularly in light of her handling of a legal matter in which I was involved. During the course of working together, she demonstrated a high level of proficiency and expertise in her field. One aspect of Ms. Cobbs' work that stood out to me was her ability to handle my complex situation with professionalism and poise. Moreover, Ms. Cobbs took the time to carefully explain each step of the process to me, ensuring that I had a clear understanding of what was happening. This approach helped put me at ease during what could have been a stressful and overwhelming experience. In summary, I cannot recommend Britt Cobbs highly enough. Her skill, dedication, and professional demeanor make her an outstanding attorney who truly puts her clients first.

Richard Kessler is the best attorney and I was so happy with the decision on hiring him. When Obama was in office I was taken in by ICE for charges that I had already served my sentence back in 1984. They were trying to take my residency away and Richard fought for me until I was exonerated from my charges and everything was dropped.

Ms. Perry made so many self promoting promises and claims that I was confident at first. After she assured shed have my case thrown out in court. She never took a call even from jail her secretary said she doesnt ( do collect calls) Refused to meet with me even once. refused to ever take a call from my brother or my uncle or my spouse. Berated my uncle at court for calling the office so often. Didnt submit any of the evidence that my uncle and my spouse had to get themselves because she didnt have the time apparently. Never used the evidence. Didnt call the police officer that volunteered to testify on my behalf. Completely went to court with absolutely no evidence. no plan and even I thought I looked guilty after that redicuolous proceeding. It went from bad to worse. Then much to my surprise this attorney that said shed fight and fight hard for me tells me 10 min before court starts 4 months after our last meeting that I have 10 min to decide to cop a pkea or face 15 yes of PRISON. for a crime she knew I did not commit. It scarred me bad I took the plea knowing that sealed my fate I trusted her as my attorney. I did trust her and noone else did at all. Even another officer doubted her ability. well.I ended up going to prison for what she said never should have even got to court in the 1st place. I find out later her only specialty is in child custody and divorce. She advertises criminal defense.big huge difference. Then the final straw.Find out that theres a good chance she had a conflict of interest and never said a word. If your freedom and name is at risk I hope your much smarter than I was.

Dave was hired to help with issues with a divorce and custody. He didn't seem to have a lot of knowledge initially, but wasn't afraid to do the leg work to find out what he didn't know. He isn't what I would call a bull dog type when it comes to representing Men in a divorce, which would be nice when dealing with the FOC and family courts. At times I wished he would have been much more aggressive. Overall its been a fairly positive experience working with him. He is willing to work out financial obligations/requirements which is very helpful from the clients prospective. Too bad for me I started all the litigation between myself and my ex wife over financial and custodial issues...all it got me was more money out of my pocket to my ex and lawyer and an better understanding of how BROKE our Family Law system really is.

If I could give 0 stars, I would. Initial intake was unbelievably unprofessional with a level of disrespect and disservice unbecoming of any business, much less a professional law firm. Sherry raised her voice when I calmly expressed discomfort at a part of the initial intake Q&A and instead of providing reassurances or more information about why they request the information they request, she yelled at me (as a new potential client) and then ultimately hung up on me, rudely ending the initial consult. How maddening and exasperating to be treated like that. I will be filing a formal complaint as well. DO NOT BE DISRESPECTED BY THIS FIRM or it's unprofessional staff.

Let me just start off by saying for all the negative reviews left by people it’s far from the truth of what and who Varnum is. I’ve been a client of Varnum now almost 5 years. I have personally been in the office and spoke with the receptionist ladies, every time I feel welcomed like I am part of the family. my children are adored and loved they get snacks and candy and drinks every time. They love going to Varnum when Daddy has to talk or see his Attorneys. My lead attorney Jon M. Bylsma Managing Partner of the Firm, and Peter Smit who now is retired but still on my case. These two attorneys at Varnum Law are the face of Varnum Jon always answers my calls, texts, and emails, he protects me and my family. Best Attorney in America. Anything I need he does it for my family, he is a true Lawyer who after being 30 plus years with the firm shows what Varnum is really all about and their values and what they stand for. Varnum isn’t ripping clients off, that’s unethical, Varnum isn’t about doing unethical practices. Varnum has been around since the late 1800s, Varnum is a very reputable Law Firm to trust with your legal needs. They’re a community based law Firm in local charities, giving back to the Community in West Michigan. Nothing in life is perfect, but I can personally tell you if you hired a law firm like Varnum Attorneys at law you will never regret it, you will become family, a repeat client. I personally recommend hiring Varnum for all you legal issues, advice, and matters. Thank you Varnum Family, Jon M. Bylsma and Peter Smit for everything you keep doing for me and my family.

At first she was very kind but as soon as I told her I didn’t have the $800 she requested she threatened me with foreclosure and then some. What type of people hire someone this ridiculous 😂 and then to top it off she hung up on me twice! She was so rude to me but as soon as I was rude back she had an issue with me. Apparently they do agreements over the phone too? I wasn’t told that I was agreeing to something over the phone. I’m not 11 😭😂 save your money time and peace, instead of dealing with these people who don’t want to do a job but smoke a pack of cigs. She always so refused to put her boss on the phone which is crazy to me considering she’s the damn receptionist 😂

Where to start...screwed up my order to the extent I could have filed a grievance with the bar, and then refused to fix the mistakes in it - which again, was grievable. Look for somebody else.

Five is not enough stars IMO for Mr. Stanley. He was thorough from the second we walked into his offices. Making a scared family feel as though they are being taken care of by someone who cares about their situation is what made this process palatable. Is he busy, Yes. Do you sometimes feel as though he might not have a lot of time to talk to you, again yes. But he is not rude. He is just to the point and factual. I still trust this gentleman with just about anything because he is steadfast and unwavering. Not to mention an absolutely brilliant attorney. Thank you Frank.

Frank is one of the most kind people I have come in contact with. The fact that from the beginning of us meeting, he never made me feel judged. It was the total opposite. He is straight forward, and gave me the most uplifting words. You get what you pay for, and I would recommend him to anyone. He has the experience, the knowledge, very well known, and has the confidence. Thank you Frank!

In June, 2016, it will have been 3 years since my sister and I sat in Attorney Stanley's office to discuss my brother's case. At that time, we were filled with so much hope because we thought he would be able to help him. During this time span, we paid him thousands and thousands of dollars and he visited my brother in prison; traveled to the jurisdiction to review evidence held by police; filed a motion in the jurisdiction that was denied and he filed an appeal application that was denied. Based upon communication with his office, whether it be via phone or email, I poked, prodded and begged for status on his case, for anything positive and I feel the best we got from him were a bunch of lame excuses for the compound delays. I realize that he deals with a lot of criminals, ones that have money, and maybe they don't deserve the same respect that say a divorce lawyer would give his/her client. Or maybe my brother's case wasn't high profile enough for Attorney Stanley to put his "all" into. Due to the nature of my brother's crime, I feel getting justice for him would not make a positive addition to his "successful cases" outlined on his website. When we first met with him, he claimed to be a christian and with that proclamation common courtesy and respect of your client should be first and foremost. Screening and not taking my brother's calls (incoming from prison) defeated him. Does he take on too many cases? Does he work harder on the ones that have more merit and lets the not so great cases fall to the wayside? He has a right hand man/attorney in his office, "Tom", the guy who does all the research and puts the pleadings together. Tom is referred to a lot, but when Attorney Stanley's is out of the office they refuse to give you his last name and said "he doesn't talk with clients". Rebecca, his secretary, spoke condescending to me multiple times and would only give me, what I consider, lame excuses as opposed to status on the case. So I have to say, what good is Frank Stanley if he takes almost 3 years to achieve nothing? The answer to that question and to the whole experience is "NO GOOD".

I recommend Mr. Lindh and here is why: From the beginning, Mr. Lindh made my case a priority and maneuvered in such a way that it instilled within me a deep confidence in him that lasted throughout the entirety of our case. On day one we took a deep dive into my case and he impressed upon me wisdom and advice that make obvious not just his years of expertise, but how much he cares. I felt heard, and because of that was able to effectively communicate my position without feeling railroaded. He supported my positions and made himself available to all my questions and concerns through not just phone calls, but email, and text messages too. I truly felt he had my back through a difficult legal matter and am thankful to have had him on my side.

Our company had viable claims of defaulted contract non-payments by customers. Cases were passed to him by another attorney who became medically ill. He signed on and then withdrew shortly after without even representing us. This is a horrible practice by someone we thought would be reputable. Very disappointed in this man.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
