Deciding to hire Thomas F. Roupas was a very wise choice. He and his staff were kind, professional and tough. He fought for me without wasting time. I would recommend him to anyone. I hope that I wouldn't need him again but if I need legal representation, I am calling Roupas Law Firm.

Mr. Holt is one of the greatest lawyers in town. He is committed, intelligent, and professional. The system has a long way to go principally speaking yet Mr. Holt isn't afraid to allow all people speak up. It is not about the outcome since the system carries issues with thousand of lives where justice never comes to exist. A voice in light to support freedom, indeed like MLK states we have a long way to go, but we need to start immediately. Mr. Holt is a compassionate, good will fellow.

Mr. Holt took care of everything involving my speeding ticket. He went to court for me, I didn't have to take time off of work to go. He got the ticket reduced to equipment failure so there will be no increase in my insurance premium. After a few weeks he then sent me the summary/bill for what I owe. He did an excellent job and if I or someone I know gets a speeding ticket I will recommend Graham Holt.

Aside from a personal matter for which I hired Mr Holt and about which he performed thoroughly and perfectly, my partner and I hired him for our burgeoning LLC. Graham Holt was on a "retainer", and we must have had meetings with him 8 or 9 separate times during a four year period. He was always prompt, professional, and extremely helpful and successful. We discussed partnership issues; we started and aborted a co-operative. We had employment issues. There was a lease to negotiate with the landlord. I don't remember all the different issues with which Mr. Holt and my partner and I wrestled. Then my partner and I split, and once again Layer Holt was a help, both in the negotiations and the separation, on a human level and a professional business level. The separation with my partner was good, in part because we followed Mr. Holt's advice. He really saved the day. I've been the sole owner now for 6 months and no new issues have yet come up--but if they do, Graham's my man!

My clients are my neighbors, my friends and my people. I care about everyone I work with. I care about everyone that loves and cares about my clients. Even though thousands of clients I represent each year are happy, it bothers me when a few are not. I realize that regardless of my efforts and intent, you can't make everyone happy. However, as long as I practice law, I will strive to be the best person and the best attorney that I can be for anyone that seeks my assistance. That is my truth and I care about all of my clients and their loved ones.

Jan Pritchett has been an amazing blessing in my life. I got into some pretty serious trouble and have had to spend some time digging myself out. He was referred to me by another lawyer, and gave me a great rate based on that referral, and has treated me like family ever since. When I got sober last year, he would check up on me to see how I was doing, invited me to play basketball with him at church, always asks how my mom is doing, etc. He's also very quick to respond to any random questions I ever have and is very patient with explanations and advice. Oh, how did my court case go, you ask? Well, he basically got it dismissed. He knows all the judges and is friends with lots of people behind the scenes, and is a master of "judge shopping." He's got one more thing to represent me on, then I'm totally in the clear. I do not think another lawyer could have done it this well. He is a great lawyer and a great human being, and I would highly recommend him to anyone. Thanks Jan!!

THE ABSOLUTE WORST!!! Initially, I was advised by a bondsman, another court official to not get Jan Pritchett. Simply because they watch many of their clients who retained him get “washed up creek” by the system. Unfortunately, I put my trust in the advisement of his frat brother which I shouldn’t have but I ultimately paid for it. Secondly, after retaining him he feed me nothing but lie after lie about my case and how things would turn out. Other lawyers I’ve consulted with agreed that my case shouldn’t have even been in superior court with me having no prior criminal record. Even Jan told me that, but his poor representation of my case allowed me to “slip thru the cracks”. Was cold for roughly three years Thirdly, My case was tucked away for roughly THREE years. I still had to report every month for roll call, but he did nothing to push my case forward. In fact, it wasn’t until I started showing at the office continuously, verbal disputes with the lawyer as to “what the heck” are you doing with my case that he just went and had them throw my case in front of jury. 1-day notice to me that this was going to happen. Lastly, this was the weakest representation in the courtroom ive ever seen. I pulled him aside a couple times and asked him to focus on the things he said he would- all the lies the prosecution used to get me there, but he didn’t and ultimately I lost that case. Under his complete advisement I lost. I will never employ this firm again, not even for the littlest of my offenses, nor will I allow anyone I know to do so. Had I listened to the bondsman in the beginning I feel I wouldn’t be in the predicament I’m in now, but I guess that’s not his job to care.

Listennnn! Attorney Carpenter did in two weeks what another attorney didn’t do in an ENTIRE YEAR! This is not a hyperbole, this is a documented fact! He came highly recommended but because of the lack from the other attorned we were skeptical! He got the job done and there was not even a need for a court appearance! He is not only good at what he does, but also down to earth and understanding of your feelings regarding the matter and the need for quick dissolution/resolution! We are so grateful for him and never even met him in person! If I could give six ⭐️s I would! I hope to never need another attorney but if I do, he is definitely my choice hands down!

Very professional but even more commendable was how attentive and personable Mr. Carpenter was. When it comes to legal processes that one may not completely understand, trust is a big factor. You want someone that understands you, has your back and applies the law appropriately and effectively .I believe that is a rare quality these days. We were not just another number in his contact list. He always got back to us and knowing that put us more at ease. I highly recommend him! Best choice we ever made!

Literally the worst encounter with a law office. Daniel Karlsson was very unprofessionally late and would rather take your money than be honest and say he doesn't feel comfortable taking your case. To then refund and send you out of the office if you bother to ask questions about payment and why you will still pay full price even if you do all the work of gathering and organizing everything need for your case. He made me feel like I had already lost my case. By the tone of his voice and facial reactions, he was believing the non sense and accusations from the opposing party. Several times I had to ask him how he felt about this case and his confidence level about it, it was not promising. He had no faith in my evidence (that he ignored to look minus one item), and honestly shocked how he spoke to me considering he worked with the innocence program and studied women and gender studies?! He has no idea how to speak to a concerned and terrified mother. Also, this office can't get appointments timed properly and they are more of a puppy mill-- you're just a # and $ to them. You'll have everyone but the attorney you made an appointment with try to come in and speak to you on their behalf. It was without a doubt the worst experience with attorneys I've ever had. I'll never recommend this place. I should've listened to the other reviews on here and the people in the waiting room telling me to run and get someone else immediately because they will not fight for you. So glad I dodged a bullet!! Do yourself a favor and do not hire this office.

I was recommended to John Kirkman in 2006 when. a former girlfriend spread rumors at my workplace and used my efforts to be left alone to feign the need for a restraining order. Mr Kirkman failed to comprehend these dynamics and failed to return phone calls. I called his office to relieve him of representation of me, yet he still showed up in court and billed me for the time. If you seek an attorney where communication is important to you I would hire one of the many other defense attorneys in Freensboro. Two stars is a gift.

I’m a nursing student & I called clerk of court to see if I could get my court date changed because I can’t miss class. She instructed me to call the DA office & speak to an assistant DA to explain the situation & see what could be done. The lady that answered the phone was EXTREMELY rude. Nonchalant attitude, refused to transfer me, talked over me, raised her voice, laughed at my concerns, took long pauses like she wasn’t listening or talking to someone else. She proceeded to tell me “I hear what you’re saying but show up to court or get arrested. I don’t give legal advice.” When I never asked her for legal advice. I done what I was instructed to do by the clerk of court. My issue wasn’t resolved due to her hanging up on me after telling me if I didn’t show up a warrant for my arrest would be issued. I’m not a criminal, never been arrested, never been to jail, I’m just a student that didn’t want to miss class & there were no accommodations whatsoever. Having a nasty attitude while working in customer service/answer phones for a living never works out well.

I have even reached out on several occasions but get no response. On top of it all I had to complete 32 hours of community service as a first time offender AND $500 not even including court costs. If you care about the outcome of your case, don’t hire this guy. He has no concern for his clients or their cases and disappears for long periods of time with no warning, no communication, and he apparently has no qualms with blatantly lying before a judge about whether or not you, as his client, have contacted him. He will not respond to emails, texts, or voicemails and fails to familiarize himself with his clients’ cases. His lack of professionalism makes me wonder why he’s even practicing law, and he should be held accountable for the delays and problems he causes his clients to face with their court cases.

Tom Maddox didn't seem to have my best interest a heart. He has built his record at the expense of his clients. He will not reach any higher than the lowest hanging fruit. During my property loss case, where my truck was totaled by a drunk driver, I not only lost my truck, but also my business. Tom was not at all interested in pursuing the loss of my business because he was afraid to ask for it from the defendants attorney. I sent in two invoices very early in the case to charge to the defendant, I ended up paying these invoices totaling almost 350.00 out of my portion of the settlement. I know this is a small amount, but this goes to show he wasn't will to demand that from the defendant. He doesn't hesitate demanding money from you. When you hire Tom Maddox, he make you feel like the defendant. Stay far, far, away!

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
