Mr Grezlak was appointed to take over my cousins case in which he was falsely accused. My cousin was held in Hudson County Correctional Facility for a total of 1 1/2 years. There was a cycle of 2 other attorneys prior to Mr Grezlak and as the saying goes "the 3rd time's a charm" It was about 3 months ago when Mr Grezlak went to bat for cousin and went far beyond expectation by beating the accusations and getting him back home where he belongs. He fought hard and never stopped fighting until the job was done as though he took the case personally and was defending a family member. If you are in need of defense and looking for a true compassionate and hard working attorney, look no further than Mr. Grezlak.

Joseph Szesko was an amazing attorney for my case. His professionalism was unmatched. He showed great composure, work ethic and most of all excellent representation. The office staff was always courteous and ready, willing, and able to assist in his absence. I am pleased with the outcome of my case and will definitely have him represent me again.

Words do no justice for the outstanding service and professionalism I experienced being represented by Michael Shulman. Some background: I was found with a small, 500 MG weed cartridge for my vape pen and was subsequently arrested in NJ. I was given the option for a public defender but decided against it after speaking with some friends who are attorneys. I found my way to Michael Shulman through word of mouth, and I could not have chosen better representation. Michael is thorough, quick to respond to emails (I rarely waited longer than 10 minutes) and answers all questions without hesitation. He has a clear grasp of the law and criminal defense and provides you with all your options. His prices are VERY fair given the level of service. I cannot imagine being represented by a public defender, especially after witnessing the other cases during my appearance before the judge/court. I ultimately enter a “guilty plea” and opted for the conditional discharge which is a diversionary program in municipal court that exists for first-time drug offenders. I was required to enter probation (or “mini-probation”) for one year. Following completion, the charges are dropped, and record expunged. There were some hiccups after being ordered to “mini-probation”. One month passed and I had still not receiving anything from court regarding probation. Two months, nothing. Three months, the same. Michael was proactive and reached out to the courts/probation every month to ensure I was covered, and the probation start date was not extended. This is the type of service you do not get with a public defender. In short, if you find yourself needing criminal defense, do not play with your future. Call, email, text Michael Shulman. You will be glad you did.

I would HIGHLY recommend Michael Shulman. He is a true professional, honest, patient, very responsive, fair in judgement, cost, understanding and goes the extra mile. I recently was faced with a situation and needed legal representation. I called Mike on a Friday late afternoon, explained my circumstances briefly by phone and before he would commit to taking my case, he asked to meet with him the following day. He took time out of his Saturday morning to meet at his office so that he could better understand my case in a face to face environment as part of his due diligence process. In other words, this man does not just take your money, he is upfront and honest, will fight for you and remains 100% transparent. My situation did turn into a trial and Mike did win my case. He was extremely communicative during the entire process, including trial and I would add to this that not all cases win in court but having someone in your corner that you can trust is very comforting. I would not hesitate to call upon Mike for representation.

Rushed through the discovery with me. I asked if they had thought through my case and had any questions. They said no and pushed for me to sign document to retain their services. Once document was signed, they asked for all evidence and information on the case. Only after they read through everything, then they called to reject my case. Was a complete, unnecessary waste of time that could've been avoided by doing the proper discovery instead of rushing to confirm my business.

I had a complex case where my son’s dog bit one of my tenants on my property while my son came for a quick visit. I am so glad I found Edward. From our first meeting, he explained everything to me in terms I could easily understand and was always very responsive when I had questions outside of our meetings, even on nights and weekends. He brought me into the office to prepare for trial. He was able to get the case split into two separate trials; liability and damages. Because we ended up winning the liability trial, the jury never even needed to see the dog bite pictures. Edward is a highly skilled litigator who is able to think on the spot. He was also able to set me up with a payment plan that I could afford because I was unemployed at times during covid. If anyone is looking for a knowledgeable attorney at a great price, then call Edward McGinty.

Atty Garrett Simulcik was an amazing help to us in an eviction and sale of our rental property in 2022. He took on what we all thought would be a standard eviction case which turned sideways at all possible points. He navigated us through the disjointed Hudson County court system as they were figuring out a post-COVID docket load. He also deftly dealt with a former tenant whose apparent main goal was not resolution but to cause additional grief for all involved. In the end we gained possession and were able to put the condo on the market. Next, Mr. Simulcik got us through closing including an 11th hour twist with the buyer trying to gain additional concessions protecting us from more expense. His deep knowledge and experience through all of our matters was absolutely invaluable. He guided us to understand the law better in our situation, including help correct misconceptions we picked up online. We are very grateful for his skill and ability to handle us as a client with our modest understanding of our options. We will turn to him again for counsel and advice on any legal matters.

I wanted a lawyer to represent me for a small but meaningful traffic violation case. Mr. Smith was a great choice. I was in and out of the courthouse quickly and I’m certain it was in large part due to the relationships Mr. Smith maintains. He was obviously well known and respected in the room. You know the saying "Don't talk the talk, if you can't walk the walk"? This guy needs to learn it. He is a cocky arrogant old man. This so called lawyer could care less about any of her clients. My husband was charged with several felonies many years ago. When I spoke with her she said there was no proof of any of the allegations and that my husband could not be charged. When she communicated with my husband she tried to convince him to take a bargain of 8-10 years and when he declined she got upset. They offered him 3 different plea bargains and he declined all. And she still tried to throw him under the bus. She is unprofessional and could care less about her clients. With no proof and a she said he said charge she did nothing to help his case. She is immoral has no standards or morals let alone a sense of responsibility for her clients.

Inez Flores is a public defender in Hudson County, who, "due to a heavy caseload", does nothing to represent her clients and ignores all correspondence. She never put in any motions in my defense, never attempted to have my bail reduced, and would not send my discovery. In fact, when I asked to see my discovery, she only allowed me to see it in her presence, which is illegal under NJ law. Do not expect anything but an offer from Ms. Flores when you speak to her, as she refuses to take cases to trial. In the event that she does, she is unprepared and loses -- in a recent decision, a man was found guilty of all counts and sentenced to 30 years in NJSP. Ms. Flores was impossible to fire, as Martha T. Royster, denied my requests to remove her from my case. Ms. Flores never represented my best interests and only approached me with plea bargains for crimes I did not commit. She works with the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office and is not for the people. If you are appointed Ms. Flores, my suggestion would be to do all possible to have her removed from your case. This was impossible for me to do. To see actual documents proving this review, check out http://realsparano.com -- this site has scanned letters from Inez Flores and Martha Royster showing the above claims to be completely valid.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
