Too bad I can't choose 0 stars. My now husband retained Dustan Abshire for his divorce as recommended by his criminal defense attorney, David Lorenzo. Dustan had him sign a protective order not explaining to him that if he signed it this meant he was admitting to having abused his then wife and/or kids per false allegations made by her the night he threatened to take his own life when he found out she was having an affair and everyone knew but him. This resulted in him not seeing his children for almost 3 years! When he no longer chose to use him, Dustan told him he wouldn't be able to get his divorce finalized without paying him more money. Divorce was finalized thru another attorney and no more was paid to Dustan. My husband maintained that he felt like Dustan only represented those he chose to help. He felt like he had marked him guilty from their first meeting and didn't bother to get to know him as a father or who he was. Felony charges were reduced to misdemeanors due to lack of evidence and truths! Lorenzo was no help either!

Franz Borghardt took care of a situation that could have had very adverse effects on me for a long time to come. I called him, he wanted to meet as soon as possible and he got to work on my case. I can not thank Franz ever enough for the hard work he did for me and my case. In the end, I am more than satisfied with the outcome of my case and now I can look forward to a much better future than ever before. Franz truly has helped make my life, future and myself better. If you need a great lawyer, hire Franz Borghardt.

Franz was phenomenal!! We called Franz immediately, on Saturday, he answered and began working on our case right away. The odds were not in our favor but at the end of the day, we got the best possible outcome from an extremely bad situation. He was able to take a potentially life altering moment and turn it into what will hopefully be a hard leaned lesson.

Paid Mrs Fay $5,000 to represent me in a divorce case . Showed up one time , did absolutely nothing for me In court. Promised many things delivered on none. Called several times, left several messages . No response. Would not recommend her . She doesn’t do her job. Poor representation. Will be hiring an attorney to sue her for negligence.

Mr Leblanc helped my sister and I probate a will. He explained the process as well as expected fees in the very beginning. I was unfamiliar with how this process worked and contacted Mr Leblanc often to ask questions. He was patient and responded promptly every time. He was professional, he sent us copies of every document he submitted on our behalf and within a couple months we had our Judgment of Possession. He did an excellent job and I would definitely recommend him to a friend.

Atty LeBlanc worked on an Succession for my family . There were several mitigating factors that gave us a very small window of time to get it done. We were stressed out and he was referred to us by pre-paid legal. He jumped right in did it quickly and efficiently. He always answered emails and returned calls same day. This is what I liked the most about him. Many attorneys don't return calls promptly. He does. He did an awesome job and in a timely fashion.

Do not waste your money! Sara filled my head with things we would ask for in court and her ideas on how things would go- then when the hearing happened- Sara sat in the zoom court hearing and did pretty much NOTHING to the point where I texted her during the hearing asking if she was helping me at all! None of what we discussed or put in court papers was mentioned. She did NOTHING. Then just recently the apposing party filed court papers. Sara didn’t notify me AT ALL. I had to go online and pay to view the court documents that had been filed the month before prior. I asked if the document had been received and was lied to! She stated that she had not received them and service was slow. The document was EMAILED. Then the day of the court hearing, Sara was NO WHERE to be found. I was forced to handle the court hearing myself, got lucky and was given a continuance after explaining my attorneys short comings. (It’s pretty sad when a full court room gasps when hearing how she just disregarded her own client) After court I texted her letting her know that court had taken place and all I could get was that they were sorry for the inconvenience and “miscommunication” and that they received some documentation last week then they tried to inform me of the ew court date that I WAS THE ONE THAT SET IT with the judge. I questioned why I wasn’t informed and was told by her “legal assistant” that Sara was ill. Now after wasting my money on Sara, I have to get another attorney. Save yourself the headache and seek other counsel! This lady will take your money and leave you out to fend for yourself when the court date comes up.

Brown is the worst lawyer I've ever had the sad misfortune to deal with. She took my 72 yr old Grandmother's Money and lied to her! She didn't even try to defend me she didn't want to hear my side and said guilty or not I will have to plea guilty if I ever want to see my son again. She filled unnecessary motions that did not help my case (the motions hurt my case). After months of lying to me and my family she forced me to plead guilty to save her the work of proving me innocent, she lied about the terms of my release (it costs us way more money then stated) and now Brown is not answering or returning any of our phone calls. That's not even half of it but long story short Brown is very unprofessional and unpleasant to deal with, she will take advantage of you and give a poor defend while charging you $1000's, I wouldn't recommend Brown to represent a dog if it needed legal representation.

We had the absolutely worst experience using Sam Winfrey! She completely butchered our case and stole our money. She never did anything we asked of her. Absolutely doesn’t know what she is doing. After we agreed upon a balance and put $2000 down and made monthly payments. Somehow our balance was almost doubled and we were told we missed 5 payments that we have proof we made so she got mad add dropped us as a client because she was in the wrong. We asked her to do certain things for our case for over 7 months and she never even got started on it. She is incompetent and a thief!

DO NOT DO IT! I hired Mr. Stegeman for a custody case. My case got a little confusing and things were happening quicker than I expected. I spoke with one of his assistants on a Tuesday and she scheduled me to discuss more with Stegeman the next Thursday - he never called, I had to call him. Then when I did call all I did was repeat the same information I told his assistant - he gave me 4 MINUTES of his time. I waited until the end of the day Friday for advice on how to proceed and still had no call back from his office. I needed someone who could help quick so I terminated Mr. Stegeman via email. I was informed by my new attorney that it normally takes about two weeks to get a refund on any unused retainer. I waited exactly two weeks to send a follow up email because I do understand things take time. It has been almost 30 days since I have terminated Mr. Stegeman and I still have not gotten at least a status of my refund and during this time they ''accidently'' drafted $500 from my account. Which when I called I was told to call my bank, but then miraculously after a few stern words they were able to void the charge. However, still no word on my retainer refund.

I am dealing with a non-compliant spouse, who I made domestic violence reports on but never heard from the organizations, social case workers or my husband's employers, the USMC. He had been enlisted for 11 years, we have been married 11 years and the Commanding officer nor any senior leaders would respond to my emails, letters or calls. They honorably discharged him 13 months after he deserted us. He was separated honorably for refusing the Covid19 Vaccine and the unit refused to reply for my requests to speak to them. The decree was served by a clerk official after 2 attempts, the first attempt was failed by 5 attempts to locate him but after I filed the 2nd time he was served the divorce decree and the child support papers successfully and the following day was when he left the state, throwing away all the contents of our home and changing his phone number, never contacting us since he was here in Louisiana. Child support court was on April 30 2021 and he did appear and he did sign the order but won't honor it. The garnishment office for the USMC was also sent a copy of the order for medical and financial support but they also were not very friendly and ignored me once I submitted the information required to garnish. The military has assisted him in avoiding responsibility and he will not open any case to the VA, because then I would be able to accomplish something through that route but they informed me on March 23 2023 to stop sending mail because they are not responsible for him or my personal issues, was how they worded it. Our son was diagnosed with ASD and that has prevented me from returning to the workforce and we have no income and nothing that I can do is what I am constantly being told by the federal state and local organizations that are put in place to assist victims of abuse and Neglect but I am ineligible for them all.

Jerri Smitko recently handled a case for me and I can’t say enough good things about her law firm. Her staff is wonderful and know what their doing. They really don’t go to court until all the ducks are in a row. They had some big shot attorney from Lafayette and she ran circles around him. I struggled and sacrificed to come up with what to me....was alot of money(THOUSANDS) to hire a defense attorney for a son whom I KNEW was not guilty of his charges. This man that readily accepted my money without hesitation, NEGLECTED TO SHOW UP AT THE FIRST COURT DATE! And then, get this, HE DIDNT SHOW UP AGAIN FOR THE 2ND TIME! OMG. I knew the very first time I talked to Mrs whatley that I finally did something right!!! She is WELL WORTH whatever your charge may be! She cares deeply and totally commits to her cases. I used Jane Booth years ago when my car was totaled after being rear-ended, and all she did was get my car paid off at $5,000. I have had three surgeries on my back and am in a wheelchair as a result, which could have been avoided if she had done her job and sent me to a REAL orthopedic specialist, right away, and ordered a full exam. Instead, she sent me to her crony who did his own "therapy" in his office for a few weeks, and then discharged me. I told the doctor that I was still in serious pain with certain movements, and he LAUGHED and told me not to move like that and I wouldn't hurt. I ended up going to a doctor on my own, and getting care on my own. I felt that both the attorney and the doctor she sent me to failed to do their jobs, and were very unprofessional. I do NOT recommend Jane Booth for anything.

Worst experience ever. Worked with JC, or rather I met him once during our consultation, paid a retainer and then I had to hunt him down for information on my case. He never showed up to my court date, and then when I called him he refused to answer or provide me with any information. He basically just took the first offer the DA gave him which was completely unjustified. Since then I have asked for my file and a complete record of service justifying his outlandish retainer fee. He has yet to respond. I ended up hiring a new lawyer, got my case fully dismissed and am in the process fighting JC in courtt over misrepresentation. Beware!!

JC was horrible. He filed for motions we did not consent and never called for upcoming court dates or informed us for anything. The only time we were called in his office was for a 'breifing' in which he asked for more money. He went with whatever deal the DA offered and did not try to fight for us. As we accepted a plea, the time was not computated correctly. I have contacted JC several times and he stated he will not help with correcting the time. He is very arrogant and I am surprised at his actions. He was reffered to me as the best lawyer and we got everything but that. I am in the process of filing a complaint. He accepted our money (which we paid him more) and did not do his job. VERY DISSATISFIED

In early January, I engaged this attorney based on a referral from the Louisiana Bar Association’s website and paid a retainer for representation at a hearing for a domestic violence restraining order that I had filed myself. I had to prepare the entire briefing with minimal assistance from him, and he took days to respond to messages and was unresponsive by phone. On the court date, he failed to appear and blamed me for not adequately reminding him, despite having sent him the paperwork with the dates clearly indicated. Due to his absence, the judge ruled against me by default, resulting in a $500 payment for the abuser’s attorney fees. I attempted multiple times to obtain a refund, but I was either ignored or given excuses. He repeatedly requested a chance to “make this right,” so I allowed him to file a petition for damages. Four months later, I received paperwork filled with errors regarding the parish, the court, and other crucial details, which I had to correct myself. Important elements, such as how the other party would be served, were omitted. I filed the corrected paperwork on April 16, and the courthouse mailed him the official copies on April 17. However, as of June 26, no action has been taken. Despite numerous attempts to contact him, he provided excuses and finally claimed he never received the paperwork. After confirming with the courthouse that the paperwork had been sent and that no additional copies were requested, I confronted him. His response was that he never received the paperwork and had to request another copy, which was false according to the clerk of court. My requests for a refund have been ignored. Despite performing most of the legal work myself, he failed to complete the simple task of mailing a document, instead providing excuses and inappropriate details about a personal medical issue. It has been seven months, and I have incurred an additional $500 bill. My safety remains at risk, and I am now more vulnerable than before due to my attempts to seek legal protection. Unfortunately, pursuing further action would require hiring another attorney to recover my money. To save yourself time and trouble, I strongly advise finding another attorney. Based on my experience, this attorney lacks ethics and is likely to mishandle your case and finances.

I hired Chris for modification of child custody and and child support after two and a half years and running up a huge bill for me to pay he withdrew himself two weeks before a scheduled trial date and was released three days before the trial date. I am left with child support that is being overpaid for over five years and is now behind because my salary has changed, I was thrown in jail because this matter wasn't resolved after Chris withdrew himself and my kids are still missing time with me and their younger brother we can't get replace. Not to mention the hardship this has placed on my family financially. This is also hurting my case because I am not financially able to maintain the relationship with my children by making all doctor visits , sporting events, going to school for lunch twice a week, attending anything public so I can spend more time with them and provide for them when they are with me. This has been a nightmare and now I have to start over with a new attorney and hope the court will acknowledge any of my evidence because of it's age when my ex wife was not taking care of the children until I made this a legal issue for her. Of course after two years my ex wife has had a chance to change everything submitted as evidence and hide anything else I may could use against her, so my children could have both parents in their lives,

Do not ever hire him to be your attorney!! He is a crook!! Hired him for a family court issue. Had him on retainer and 2-3 days before my court date proceeds to tell me I owe him an extra $2,500. Already paid the retainer plus an extra $1500 in case the whole thing went over. He didn’t do a thing to say I used up all my time, it’s not like I was on trial for murder. Told him I wasn’t paying more so he says he would be dropping me as a client. The day before court he then messages me to see if I still needed him to come and represent me at our hearing. Of course I still needed him, I done gave him all my money and couldn’t find a lawyer in 2-3 days time. He shows up to the hearing and doesn’t speak up for me or anything you think a lawyer would be there for. I had to speak up for myself and when I did he told me to be quiet. I then spoke up for myself again. Once I did that again, he got up and walked out. He then tells the hearing officer to take his name off the docket that he would not be representing me anymore. He ended up with $4500 of mine and did nothing!! Ended up needing to get another attorney that did more for the actual case than he did and that still didn’t use up all of my time. If I could give him zero stars I would. I repeat DO NOT EVEN THINK OF HIRING THIS “ATTORNEY”!!

We spoke because he was referred by a friend. He apparently is very good at what he does from what I've been told. He promised to return my call with some counsel on my next move before retaining him. He knew my court date was just over two weeks away and promised to contact me after reviewing information for me. He never returned my calls after following up with his law firm multiple times. If he didn't want to help he could have at least called me back and told me to find help elsewhere. I would not recommend him whatsoever; promised one thing, did more damage than help. Wasted a week waiting for him to contact me back because I thought he would be the answer to my prayers. I. Was. Wrong. The worst kind of salesman ever. Absolutely assured me I was in good hands and didn't need to worry. I didn't sleep for a week because I was hoping he would at least give me some perspective on my next move. Retained another lawyer that assisted me significantly and actually cared about my issue. Don't trust this man. Is he experienced? Absolutely. Is he ethical or responsible? Not at all.

I have run a national company for over 25 years and have dealt with dozens of trial attorneys. Bob is the most knowledgeable and thorough attorney that I have ever dealt with. I would only recommend him when in need of an attorney in New Orleans.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
