I got caught doing 137 in the 65 in Fairfax County. I contacted the Wilson Law firm. I was facing one day in jail for every mile over 100 Mr. Wilson took my case. I listen to what he told me. I got the most favorable outcome ever, NO JAIL time. He knows what he’s doing. He’s very professional, he’s knowledgeable and he knows the courts. Thank you Mr. Wilson. You are the best. I’m gonna take you for a ride. I promise to do the speed limit.

They took the time to thoroughly explain every step of the legal process, ensuring that I felt informed and confident along the way. Their expertise in the field was evident. Communication was always prompt and clear. Thanks to The Wilson Law Firm, my reckless driving case was resolved in a timely and favorable manner. I couldn't have asked for better representation. I would like to thank Kristen Yurkowski-Wight and the entire team at Tobias Iszard for all the work they put in the past year. It was a struggle at times, but with their insight and knowledge I was able to get to a settlement that I am more than happy with. Thank you so much Kristen and all of you at Tobias Iszard.

Ms. Kristen Yurkowski Wight represented a custody case for us. We are so thankful for deciding to follow her as she transitioned from a previous practice over to Tobias Iszard. The staff at Tobias Iszard are much more responsive. This young lady is the total package. She has the looks and brains to make things happen for you. She is very meticulous and direct, but honestly her most intriguing attribute as a lawyer is her sense of care. We've been through 3-4 lawyers in the matter of custody and a lot of times it's just a job for them. They speak the good game when trying to reel in your business, but as soon as you sign, you become another case number in their books. Different practices will toss you and your case to their assistants and paralegals. Often times, depending on your case, you may even get an alternate lawyer within the practice when it comes court time. Ms. Yurkowski handled our case with the utmost care. She keeps in constant contact, and months after the case has ended, she continues to check in. Thank you Kristen for being our shining light and successfully getting us through our case. She is our go-to lawyer and go-to practice moving forward. We only wish we had found Kristen earlier in the legal process.

Dan is a lawyer my family enlisted for guidance and problem solving for several issues. From the moment Dan met with me to discuss options and strategies, I knew we had struck gold. Dan Harvill has a legal voice we had to listen to, especially during a chaotic family time which included a loss of life, financial turmoil, and threats to personal safety. We turned to Dan Harvill for his stewardship during the most difficult times our family faced. Dan is considered a friend now for fighting so diligently on our behalf. As if he was defending his own family, Dan made our interests his priority and we trust him implicitly. If you have any legal entanglements or are being exploited, or need a lawyer for any reason, Engaging Daniel Harvill as your attorney will be the best decision you ever made.

I am very much impressed by his work ethic and his approach toward difficult situations that came across in my case. The best thing about him was that whenever a crisis came about, he would present the situation to me in a very calm manner and at the same time give me a set of possible solutions to the problem.. He would then let me choose the approach that I felt most comfortable with. This made me feel that I am in very good hands. He was very nice to spend time making me understand legal language in layman terms. Since the beginning he has been very supportive of my financial situation and I am very grateful to him for that. He is a very strong and effective lawyer and more so he is a gem of a person by heart. His advice has always been very valueable to me. With Mr. Harvill I know I have a trustworthy relationship and know that he has my best interest in mind. I would not hesitate for a second to recommend Mr. Daniel Harvill for any legal needs, he is the best!!

Mr. Harvill represented me in both an extremely complicated divorce and real estate matter. At all times he was well prepared and researched every complicated issue thoroughly. At no time was he unavailable. In court he was thoroughly prepared with complex matters. His interaction with opposing counsel and the Judge was highly professional and courteous. What turned out to be an extremely complicated matter, with Mr. Harvill's acumen and ability, the matter turned out favorably for myself. I would highly recommend him for both domestic law and real estate matters.

Thomas Breeden is one of the best ever lawyers i have come across. Thomas doesn’t play when it comes to serious business with his job as a lawyer.Too great as a lawyer. I have never regret hiring him as my lawyer. I found myself in a contempt case and someone recommended him for me and i have being so excited from the day i hired him as my lawyer till the final day that the judge ruled the case in my favor ( DISMISSED ) He got my case dismissed within a twinkle of an eye with professionalism. Tom is too good.I will forever recommend him to anyone who will find himself / herself in any area of his field as a lawyer. Don’t listen to any negative things that someone may tell you about Tom, just give yourself a try and you will never regret hiring him. Am so happy now and free forever after the case was totally dismissed.I love his patience and commitment in the court room. Tom respects his clients very well. I paid $70 for a phone consultation, and I terminated the call within less than three minutes, as Mr. Breeden both interrupted and raised his voice at me. He first cut me off, saying that I started in the middle of story and he needs to to know the first page. At that moment, I realized that he either hadn't read the intake brief that I sent to his office days ago or he doesn't want the case. I insisted to get to the bottom of it: did he at least *receive* my written brief or not? He refused to answer and commanded me to again, start with the page one of the story. The argument escalated. Within seconds, I terminated the call, telling Mr. Breeden that I'm concerned that our communications have already broken down and I have no confidence in working with him. That was a $70 well spent - I had no idea that layers can be that unprofessional, now I've experienced it.

If I could give 0 stars- I WOULD! Did NOT show up to court! Red flag #1 When Raimo was appointed to my child support case I spent the entire time leading up to my court date trying to reach her with no success. I tried everything. She DOES NOT respond or return emails, phone calls, millions of voicemails etc. Red flag #2 When I finally heard from her it was via a text message sent at midnight- which I find completely unprofessional. With my court date 4 days away, I was feeling desperate and helpless, so I responded immediately, but AGAIN got no response until 2 days before court. Red flag #3 When I finally spoke to her, I explained my case but she offered no sound advice or options for fighting the case. She seemed uninterested and claimed she was busy with “school.” This interaction left me feeling just as hopeless as before. Now at this point I should’ve known better and looked elsewhere for help, but she had dragged me and ignored me right up until the weekend before court so I had no time. Now here I am, waiting to see the judge, and she is nowhere to be found; Ignoring all my calls and texts. Long story short- SHE DID NOT EVEN SHOW UP TO COURT!! TWO DAYS LATER - she sends me a nonchalant text message saying- “Sorry I missed you. What happened in court?” She did not even have the decency to give me a call. Disgustingly unprofessional. I NEVER write reviews but this one was necessary!! This lady should have her license revoked! As a lawyer, clients put their trust in you and you are responsible for their well-being, freedom, representation in the legal system. I’m sorry but this lady is TRASH!

Both Mr. Reed and his wife have worked on my personal injury case. They have kept me informed and are very knowledgeable in the process. They are professional and always on point with responses to the insurance company's attorney. The insurance company of the individual who rear-ended me at a traffic stop has refused to pay my medical bills. The Reed Law Firm, has been firm and professional in their request that the case be settled. I am confident that we will end up with a favorable outcome. I was previously represented my Ms. Reed in my divorce; I was very please with the representation I received during the divorce. Ms. Reed worked relentlessly, I felt very well represented, Ms. Reed took over my divorce case after a unpleasant experience with another female attorney who lacked in professionalism, ethics and compassion. I can't say enough about both Mr. and Mrs. Reed in the manner in which they have represented me. I was new to this area and did not where to turn when by chance I ran into an individual who highly recommended Ms. Reed to me.

Maureen was the third lawyer with whom I spoke about my need to file for divorce. I chose Maureen to represent me because of her ability to look beyond the conversation toward what it may take to reach the objective. She was always attentive to my concerns and brought me back to focus when it seemed to me that the situation may be going sideways. She has a sense of compassion that managed to bring calm to a very stressful situation. She prepared me for any outcome; good, bad or indifferent. Maureen guided me through each step of the process so that I was included. Horrible attorney he is lazy! Waits until day of court to review your file. He is unresponsive. expects you to lead him in defending your case in court as if you went to law school. He has no people skills will just repeat “oh yea I like to win” over and over again. All talk no action attorney. I have dealt with numerous lawyers and this one right here makes you question the whole entire process of becoming a lawyer. I knew more then he did. He’s also not respected by prosecutors or judge they play with him in court like a child. I have seen public defenders do excellent jobs for free. I’m looking to file a complaint with the board regarding his behavior. He is a no go! Do not waste your time and he plays on fear tells you bs that’s completely not true. So educate yourself look up laws online he taught me not to ever put your own freedom in anyone’s hands because they will screw u if they are not about standing by you. Oh and his whole entire office is a joke I skipped over to another lawyer and when I tell you results in three weeks that this guy couldn’t provide in 3 months. Literally couldn’t stand him he won’t even greet you in court he treats you like he’s prosecution. But he’s literally a big annoying joke. I never take the time out to write reviews but felt the need because this experience was a jaw dropper. I don’t know how in the world he got a license and my case was so small. He needs to study for that bar exam over again!

He treated me the way a deputy treats a prisoner. I'm going to begin by saying I have sustained a lot of injury to my brain and am not smart. My car was hijacked with me in the passenger seat, and the hijackers OD'ed (but were still breathing despite being catatonic). An onlooker called the police and I was charged for possessing their drugs even though there were still two bags of drugs in my car when I got it back, meaning the floormats and glove compartment had not been searched by the police, who reported that all bags of drugs were found in the pocket in the passenger seat where I was sitting, when that wasn't the case. The wife of the man who kidnapped me must have put all the evidence there while the police thought she was unresponsive, because she was waking up as the police arrived and made me get out of the car first, leaving her alone in the car for a minute. The police also "lost" $300 of my stuff including, literally, the key to the car. Matt told me I was not telling the truth and refused to join any line of conversation that wasn't about him irrefutably calling all of the shots----throughout his entire lifetime----always and forever the biggest diva ever to strut about the crust of the earth. He said that he tells all his clients to write on a fresh sheet of paper that they would like him to submit a guilty plea: meaning he systematically tells all his clients that they are lying to him and actually are criminals regardless of their innocence or guilt. He's been in Manassas for years and had just been a police officer here for a decade, and then a lawyer for around the same amount of time but he implied that he didn't know the officer who arrested me who is not a newbie, and would ostensibly know Matt if they worked for years in the same place. I just don't see any redemption for Matt. Lying makes things inconvenient for others in your community, but to use lying to make others decide out of terror to also lie is the definition of a criminal in my book--someone who needs to be put away indefinitely. Imagine hiring a lawyer and when you go over the case he points fingers at you for crimes that were done against you, he wont respond to anything other than "Tell the judge I'm guilty", he repeats himself a thousand times about how his experience is the end-all-be-all of subjectivities and that the whole time every planet has been revolving around him he's "never" seen a case where someone claimed to be innocent. Yeah right. I was arrested for possessing drugs that I don't know how imbibe in, and to be honest Matt made me want to fatally OD on drugs even though I'm too scared to use a syringe. To rephrase it to make this statement completely impartial, Matt thinks highly of himself and I would like to bring death upon myself as a result of his actions toward me. People get put to death in this state, and then there's people like Matthew James Morrison. Who's ready to drive to their hearing with Matt as their lawyer? Hey, I'm unfortunately still alive to tell the tale: I dare you to hire Matt, and find out whether you'll go over the case with him at his office or soil your pants before making it through all the way. I do this with all my clients. Write down on a piece of paper that you would like to have Matt be your lawyer and then sign it. Potentially I could find you to contain a shred of sanity otherwise. This is a lawyer who for absolutely no reason tells you he called you multiple times when he didn't and you have the same phone number as always. Seriously--and he didn't even inform me of the reason why he called--he just wanted me to feel like I was in the wrong so that what he had made me do would line up with him making me feel like I was in the wrong for not answering his calls. I have brain damage, ok? I'm not smart. Matt, though? He's some kind of mastermind.

a while ago, The Manassas court attorney referral department referred me ( for a reasonable of $75.00 or so ) to contact attorney Scott J. Newton. My first meeting with Attorney Newton was great he was very informative on my options to my case that I had won judgement by the court . couple months later I decided to hire Mr. Scott J. Newton and use his services to follow-up and continue my small case. So I went ahead and called his Manassas office, a receptionist answered. I asked her if I could speak with attorney Newton regarding a previous consultation I had with the Attorney, she asked me multiple questions as if she was checking if my case was worth the attorney's time. then i was transferred to a different receptionist, I again asked if I could speak with attorney Newton, then i was transferred back to the first receptionist. I again asked if attorney Newton was available. Her responds was " "Mr. Newton Does recall speaking with you but you will have to schedule an appointment again with Mr. Newton. You will have to pay a fee of $250.00 for your visit again " Wow ! So my personal experience is that, Mr. Newton and his staff are all about their own benefit and not about helping. So I don't think its fair to pay this attorney 250.00 just to fully refresh his memory. I felt this was so unfair, Was it because my case was not as profitable for him ? maybe so..

The most unprofessional person I’ve ever had to deal with. My husband is being held in a completely different county due to this lawyers lack of notice about a new court date. When I called to ask what’s going on, he said “What do you expect me to do about it” and hung up the phone on me. After speaking with the courthouse and confirming this is who was still technically representing him, they were appalled. Words can’t even describe how rude this man is and/or how the hell he’s even able to call himself a lawyer. As a law student myself, it’s an insult to have people like this working for our justice system.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
