My husband and I had an easy divorce. There were no children and no real estate, vehicles or possessions that we were fighting over. We came up with the equity division by ourselves. My lawyer basically had to write up and file the paper work. I was told this would be done in 2 months, it took 6. I was not informed along the way about what was going on at all. I was not notified that I was divorced and found out 2 weeks after by contacting the Court House and asking if they had any idea when the divorce would be finalized.

She doesn't put up with the good old boy club at the court house. She doesn't let them just do what they want And ignore your rights. She fights for you. SHE FOUGHT FOR Me. And it wasn't easy I have a big criminal record. I got my life together and she got me 50-50 legal and physical custody of my kid. I wouldn't use any other lawyer.( thanks Kim I owe you )

I hired on Mr. Metherd after recieveing my first traffic violation. He was incredibly informative with what all would happen and how it could be handled. I am very appreciative of his services as well as the help to save money and the points on my driving record. I will certainly use him again in the future should the need arise.

I've recently had him represent me in a driving under suspension an speeding ticket, he didn't keep me informed about anything an most of all didn't do what I've asked of him an later withrawn from the case because I got another DUS. He sold himself to me about him helping out a guy with a DUI an how hard of a worker he is, do not I repeat do not let him sell himself to you!

Atty Elizabeth Strand represented me in a case where I'd been charged with Felony Fleeing of a Peace Officer. The County offered a plea deal and I refused. I risked a year in prison and a $10,000 fine if we lost. She found a million holes in the prosecution and the Jury ruled on my behalf because of her. She also returns phonecalls in a timely manner.

When I started my divorce I was very lost. After explaining my situation to Mr. Reinke I felt much more secure and comfortable in what was going on. He was understanding and non-judgemental through the whole process. He also had my interests and concerns in mind the whole time. He made sure that I knew exactly what was going on every step and that I never had outlandish expectations. He was honest and straight forward. I was as pleased with the outcome as a person can be in a divorce. I also know if I need assistance down the road with custody or child support I can count on him.

Shawn spent most of his time during my divorce sending endless proposals back and forth to the ex's attorney that he knew weren't going to be accepted. If he would have been more proactive, he would have just taken the greedy %+&$* to court and we would have easily had a better outcome. Months into my divorce, I get an email saying he's leaving the firm I hired him at to start his own practice. It all made sense then...it's tough to believe he was really working as hard on my case as he could; fighting for a favorable outcome for me when he's busy, secretly spending his time starting a business... Would not recommend...

Mr. John Lucas and I met today, Monday October 30, 2017. Mr. Lucas is currently a Public Defender on behalf of Hennepin County. Mr. Lucas was very informative and shared with me that DWI cases have a statute of limitations of 3 years. If this is true, why would any County or City Hall Attorney's office be allowed to continue prosecuting a DWI Case over 3 years old, or where an outstanding Warrant has been purged from the records. Just saying, all you "nameless" City Hall Attorneys in the State of Minnesota, wise up and stop prosecuting "dusty," Statute of Limitations expired cases, and wasting Judges, Court Administrators, Attorneys & Defendant's time with "crap" cases, when the case has exceeded the Statute of Limitations, according to Attorney, John Lucas.

Contesting a Cellular Device Ticket - Facts below; Appointment for an arraignment at 2:00pm - waited over 2 hours in a zoom call to be called upon - I understand staffing is short, appointments are overbooked and timing can never be predicted. Now into the story of why I'm providing a 1 star review here for Mr. Baertschi -- After waiting 2 hours for a chance to speak. Mr Baertschi did not provide me an opportunity to speak, nor listen to my story - instead, stated: "I have given you your options based off the 6 words I just read "Driver was holding his cellular device in his right hand". You can take it or leave it - it's your choice. I did not even get an opportunity to present my side of the story or facts to this ticket. I accepted the consequences due to my own actions, but did not seem this was fair - I have never been pulled over for using a phone while driving, did not receive any warnings -- my driving record is clean. He would not offer any chances to negotiate or compromise. This was all finished within 2-3 minutes because he had other 'recipients'/claims he had to get to. Later, when going back into the zoom lobby with other folks who were here to contest their tickets - there was a young female who had the same offense as me "being on phone while driving" and it sounded like Mr. Baertschi gave her at least 10+ minutes of his time, yet I only received 2-3 minutes and was interrupted continually. Moral of my review - he does not treat everyone fairly and equally - I then was presented in front of a judge and offered my comment and the judge lowered my total fee without question. Equality at it's finest... Would never trust Mr. Baertschi with a case of mine, he had to look at his computer for notes the whole session. I read your comment. There's no way for me to respond... so I'll edit my review. I was simply navigating around my phone, I literally moved to my new residency and was there for less than 5 months and did not give me a chance out but instead resulted to punishment with your power. You are enabling young ones by letting them have a reduced fee because they can't afford the consequences... A 19 year old to be given grace... I get where you're coming from but at the same time we as a society are just enabling this behavior. You asked me what my occupation was and based off that, you decided I have to pay the fee because I can afford it.

I highly advise you research before taking on this firm. I was hit 5 times in 1 year by negligent drivers. The officers in 4/5 cases stated that these incidents were completely unavoidable! Meaning these cases are an EASY target for an attorneys office. 2 vehicles were utterly totalled out of 5 wrecks. Mine and my children's bodies were severely affected. My Chiropractor referred me to this firm saying "he is a fellow believer, he will take care of your family Clifton". Patrick took VERY little notes throughout the whole process, he settled 1 out of 5 cases. That incident I was STOPPED in a Taco Bell drive through and a Uber driver SLAMMED into me at 20mph. Admitted that he was "sorry for not paying attention", with a witness present that I have access to! My neck and waste was heavily injured! It took Patrick and his team 6 months to resolve that 1st case. I rarely heard from him and he would NOT communicate with me. And the amount, we'll just say I was NOT compensated for my injuries and loss. Then I was hit head on with the 2nd wreck 1 month later that destroyed my classic Rolls-Royce Phantom edition of Lexus LS600HL. It was a "no fault" situation, and State Farm is to pay me back pay am the way to that wreck April 21 2023. Patrick and his team did NOTHING to get that ball rolling. State Farm said that they never even spoke to Patrick's office! To this day 'Nothing'. 3rd wreck in my new VW hybrid Jetta driving down town Minneapolis on a 1 way, DRUNK DRIVER turned left from the MIDDLE LANE and "t-boned" my passenger side! And the police refused to come to the scene 1 block from the station after I reported smelling alcohol on his breath. And although I got his i.d. and insurance, this driver fled the scene when he found out I called the police! Patrick has done NOTHING on this case!!! Simple in and out case! This happened June 2023. 4th wreck my children and I were headed to the Chiropractor office. We were getting into highway 10 headed east from Hanson Blvd. A vehicle who admittedly reported she was traveling OVER interstate speeds of 78 MPH dove across 3 lanes and NAILED my daughters and I where her S.U.V. CLIMBED UP MY DRIVER SIDE! Where I had to do ridiculous tactics to keep us all alive! And the state Patrol yelled at her for her reckless action!!! 'EASY' case!!!! Yet Patrick and his team have neglected taking care of this literally saying this is difficult on his firm. Like, ummmm isn't this your career? This was in August 2023 Anywho, if that's not enough, my children and I were in Robbinsdale, I was parked on the side of the road, and a driver in a F150 was nearly 75 feet away at a stop sign SUDDENLY decided to drive in REVERSE upwards of 25 mph RECKLESSLY not only backing into my car, but DROVE OVER my car line a monster truck nearly crushing myself and my 7 year old daughter on our way home from school and grocery store! Patrick then said to me that it is very difficult for he and his team to resolve these matters. This was 1 month ago. Thriving these indecents, Patrick stated utterly un responsive through all 5 cases unless I pressured him for not communicating. It became too too much for me! Ask the way to the point where he wrote me this morning saying "I think you should talk to other attorneys" ... and "I don't like having unhappy clients. If you are unhappy, it might be best for both of us if you discuss your situation with other attorneys. Maybe you will have a better experience "... Take it from me. Research 1st! My Chiropractor said "Clifton, I am disappointed in how you feel about Pat. I have worked with him for over 20 years and he and his son have been wonderful. I hope you two can work things out. You are my patient and I will continue to serve you if you want that". So out of 20 years, ask of a sudden? Lastly, when I was needing to hear about my cases, Patrick messaged me "I'm on vacation". I said can you please have someone from your office inform me of the status (after being silent for 3 months) and he did NOT put me in contact with anyone from his firm...

If ur looking for a lawyer to help you in a custody case, do not choose this irresponsible man. I had nothing but a headache with him! He didn’t even turn in motions in time to the judge, nor get my gal fee waived (got it done myself in one day!) never had time and refused my money back because I seen no change or no effort in my case. My ex lawyer got everything done and sent in time this dude had no time and very care less. I will be reporting to the higher boss! I am so disgusted wasted $4,000 on this guy for a retainer. He is rigged with Isanti county, and he does not take his job seriously nor care once he gets that 4k he’s out and not helpful at all. Never in and never had the time to do anything in or out of court. What a character! Spend ur money and time else where what a joke!

David Sjoberg represented my son in a divorce case. David was difficult to get ahold of. He did not follow through with opposing attorney. He refused to file for a hearing when temporary child support was set too high by $1,000 per month. The Judge denied the over payment of child support since no hearing was requested to reduce the temporary amount. When it came time for the financial settlement, David did not have anything for my son to review. He just kept saying ‘it’s a good deal. Just take it’. This is your financial settlement shouldn’t you be entitled to look at your numbers on paper? My son wasted 22 months with David representing him. PLEASE do not waste your hard earned money and precious time with David Sjoberg. He ended up changing attorneys and the file that was transferred to his new attorney was basically empty.

I have no doubt that David is a great lawyer, he had great information that helped me understand the situation I was in, but is not the best at communication. He told me he would send me a retainer agreement for a simple family court case. After calling 5+ times over the span of 2 weeks to ask if he could send it, all I got in response was his assistant telling me they would relay the message. I get that people are busy and might not be able to take a case, but I would have appreciated some communication so I could call another service instead of treading water and losing valuable time. Not very professional in my opinion.

Mr Ludescher is a very skilled negotiator and litigator. His rates are an excellent value. Worth every dollar. He has strong ethics and has suffered because he would not do wrong by his client to avoid punishment. All the same, when it comes to family matters and estates, even collections, David presents options as well as how those options affect the time frame for resolution as well as the cost potential for each option. His communication is also excellent. Response times are asap. We used lawpay to make our payments online, so there was no worry of delayed check cashing or handling of cash. Kristina is also spot on with documentation, appointments, communication and customer service. We will be back for estate planning... 😁

Drake represented my ex in a custody battle even though Drake is his first cousin. Drake being my ex’s first cousin knew without doubt that my ex has been very mentally unstable, abusive, and dangerous since he was a teen. Drake stood by his cousin though and together they petitioned a generous parenting time schedule for my ex and no child support payments either! This is odd given I was not able to get Drakes cousin to share any parenting responsibilities prior to our court date making me the only care taker at the time of the hearing. Drake knew fighting for the rights of putting an infant with a documented, record having active abuser 50% of the time who suffered ongoing severe psychosis and mental illness wasn’t in the best interest of my child but he wasn’t going to let his little cousin get the outcome our family deserved. Drake looked me in the eyes at the court house and told me the only person who dosent have to tell the truth in court is the lawyer. He intimidated me verbally which I don’t think is standard procedure…. Because of the 50/50 parenting time split countless physical abuses have been inflicted on me in front of my son by Drakes cousin. I was strangled the other day by Drakes cousin and I was punched in the face in front of my son by drakes cousin. I know this man has 0 integrity so I’m sure he’d make a good defense attorney. He will negligently and recklessly endanger others for the benefit of his clients. I had to call the police when Drakes cousin strangled me because I was terrified for my life. I believed him when he said he was going to kill me. So now the question is, when I file this order of protection and motion to revisit the child custody order will Drake take his cousins case back on. Will he again try to secure disproportionally even more rights to his cousin in regards to custody when he knows how sick and dangerous his cousin really is? I doubt Drake would afford this amount of unprofessionalism and moral negligence to a case that’s not a potential conflict of interest but hey if he does Roll this loose with all his clients this guy is the king of criminal defense cases that require a slimey self proclaimed liar to represent clients with out the presence of pesky integrity. I’m literally shocked this person can represent a strangler and argue that they deserve more time with helpless kids.

After four years of fight in court, Steven has been able to prove that I wasn’t an abusive person and that the mother of my kids didn’t need an OFP. Steven had always give me right recommendations and take the time for my case. He has been able to direct me to the right person that I need like anger manager and immigration attorney. Eric was extremely helpful, before even retaining him as my attorney. He asked pertinent questions and made me feel comfortable with my options all while being in the consultation stage. The secretary always answers the phone at the firm and I never had an issue getting ahold of Eric directly once he gave me his direct line. Hire Eric Newmark on a drug case and he did absolutely NOTHING towards my defense. I couldn't get ahold of him hardly ever and he no showed on promised appts with me and missed phone calls to me that he had scheduled. He came to court unprepared and the only defense he offered was what I had done all the legwork on. His assistant knew little to no information about the case and would tell me each time I called that I would have to talk to Eric then he wasn't available. His office ended up refunded almost half of my initial fee which still wasn't enough considering he did nothing on the case. Horrible excuse for a lawyer.

I used Mr Christensen's services recently for assistance in requesting a reconsideration of denial of unemployment insurance benefits after former employer unfairly appealed (and won) my award following termination for pretty shakey reasons. Erik bent over backwards to provide service, was very helpful. While he was unfamiliar with the statute applicable in the matter, he reviewed it in my presence, then gave me great advice about how to proceed. I found his rate extremely reasonable.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
