Laura Valentine was my son's public defender for a juvenile case in Scott County (Shakopee). My son/her client is an individual with intellectual disabilities with IQ below 65. Laura Valentine knew there was substantial evidence to support that my son couldn't assist in the legal proceedings due to his developmental disability. Laura Valentine deliberately failed to file for a Rule 20.01 review hearing for Competency Motion. Which violates the Fifth and 14 Amendments, the rights to due process. My son was later adjudicated of the juvenile offenses. But that is not all she did in this case. Kaura Valentine on May 5th, 2020, forced my son to come to court for an in-person after Gov Walz activated the state of emergency stay in order because of COVID-19. I tried to stop the in-person hearing due to my son's asthma and my very serious health condition that put us at a high risk of getting COVID-19. But Laura Valentine didn't care and had my son/client come to Scott County Government anyway where she met him and then she unlocked the door to the courthouse, and they went in the building, it was dark. Laura Valentine turned on the lights. Nobody was in there, just them. They got into the elevator and went to the second or third floor. After reaching the third floor my son/her client had to go to the restroom and Laura Valentine kept walking down the hallway. After my son came out of the restroom and as they started walking towards Laura who was quite a distance down the hallway, about a minute later someone started screaming and yelling coming from behind them. When they turned around to see who was screaming at them. It was the deputy sheriff yelling at them to stop and had his hand on his gun. The deputy sheriff asked them how they get into the building and what was they doing in the building. My son informed the deputy that Laura Valentine his attorney unlocked the courthouse and brought them upstairs. My son and his escort were scared to death because the deputy was very angry that they were in the building when it was closed to the public. The deputy asked Laura Valentine if this was true, and she said yes. The deputy asked her how many other times she did this. Laura replied just once. The deputy took my son and the adult I sent with him back downstairs turned on the metal detector made them walk through it and then escorted them back upstairs. My son and his escort could have been shot and killed in that courthouse behind Laura Valentine forcing my son to a in person when every courthouse in America was closed to the public. Laura Valentine tried to give my son covid by forcing an in-person hearing 6 weeks after the pandemic stay in order and then almost got him and his escort shot and killed because the deputy mistaken them for burglars who had broken into a closed government building. Bottomline what Laura Valentine did in this matter to my son/her client was criminal. This is a very dangerous attorney and should be held accountable for what she did.

Atty. Laura K. Valentine is one of the best attorneys I have had the pleasure to work with. She is not only very informed and responsive to questions, but she takes her clients' cases very seriously and works hard for each one. She is very good at her job, very compassionate and always ready to help your situation regardless in her extreme busy schedule. I felt as though I had a friend in my corner who definitely had me and my daughter best interest in mind. I can't thank Atty. Valentine enough for the tremendous help she had provided me. I highly recommend her.

Used this lawyer as a divorce attorney, she never fought for my best interests and did not inform me of so very many things I should have been aware of when making decisions throughout the divorce process. The final divorce decree that she presented me with for review appeared to be a form that contained items I never agreed to. One item was a life insurance policy for my ex-wife to cover spousal support incase of my death. This was never discussed muchless agreed to, yet it was on the decree, I had to point it out for it to be removed. Through out the divorce all Laura wanted to do was settle, whether it was in my best interest or not. Post divorce I asked her to find out why spousal support was being taken directly from my check versus paying my ex-spourse directly as agreed upon and stated in divorce decree. To my knowledge Laura never followed up with the county, she certainly never followed up with me and has never contacted me again, even after I made several attempts to reach her.

Don't waste your money to this attorney. I paid him $3,500 cash for my case. I have to do my own homework and find out things by myself. Everytime I asked him questions about my case, he tried to avoid and say something else like he was rushing to do other things. When I actually asked him what to say and not to say during court, he told me that he can not gave me any suggestion or idea. He cannot gave me the answer and was told that I will have to find my own answer. At the end, I lost my case due to not having enough evidence to prove my innocent. I don't recommend this laywer.

I paid him to defend me. Never once contact ed me, wanted to sit down and planned a defense. Only showed up in court and argue d so stupid ly. He probably thought my $500 was nothing. He even blamed me for not letting him know about how i was going to defend myself. I was like what? That's your job not mine. Don't waste your money ... you yourself might even do better by your self. Lucas couldn't pronounced certain words properly and that made it even harder for us because biased Rosso wouldn't understand what he was asking the defense. He was basically shut out in the court room because he was not prepared to argue my case. He was looking pretty stupid. Pathetic that a lawyer would be so I'll prepared like that. I believe he never had the intention to defend me .. he thought it was so simple that he was going to swing it in court to lose or to win. I do not recommend this lawyer. He was not knowledge ful or showed interest in me. I think he had no intention of defending me which is a violation of his license.

She is the worst lawyer you can get! No joke. She literally before reviewing my case told me what she thought which was I was going to be screwed and it wasn't like that at all after all I was the victim. I didn't do anything like they had claimed. The case resulted in working way toward my favor with no prison time. She was not at 3 of my court dates they literally had to look for her and stop court and stop the whole thing every time she didn't show up. I never could talk to her and only seen her when she was in her office and I showed up randomly when she had no idea I was coming because I tried to make appointments to see her but she wouldn't be there when she said she would and told me to come in. She is horrible and just downright mean. Talked to me over the phone like I was a kid and disrespected me multiple times. I believe I could have won my case with a better lawyer.

Adam Yang became a Judge in Ramsey County Court, and I had the unfortunate circumstance to have him preside over my divorce trial in family court. His order was terrible and the balance sheet riddled with errors and double accounting that resulted in me overpaying my ex by more than $100k! I’m still dealing with his mistakes through the legal system more than two years and one appeals court later. I believe he is incompetent and neglectful of the true evidence presented to him, and he certainly can’t do basic math. It has cost me tens of $1000s to correct his mistakes!

I hired Steve to represent me in my child custody case. At the time I had no idea that he was the same attorney that represented my uncle in a divorce were my he lost almost everything. He also grew up with the opposing party in my custody case. I had thought that he was a genuine straight up attorney that was good at his job. I took out a loan for $3,000 and that was gone in no time but I thought to myself that custody cases are expensive and that is the way it has to be. Another $5,000 and I now owe him a thousand still. We never once made it to court and he was sitting there billing me for calls he never had to make to me in the first place because he knew my answer to settling. I smartened up and got another attorney to handle the rest of my case. I hope as many people as possible get a chance to read this before they hire him. I also plan on speaking to an attorney about taking him to court to be repaid the money that was spent on the services that he did not deliver on. To all I wish the best. God Bless You.

I'm not just a bitter former client I can justify my rating. Trustworthy, I had to call Mr rolsch to remind him of my court date in which we never ended up speaking with each other prior to that date. Responsive, Months went by without speaking with Mr rolsch and when I would try to call him the only response I would get was a $75 bill for listening to my voice mail but never did hear from him. Knowledgeable, he billed me for hours and hours of research for a dwi case. That is the bread and butter of any defense attorney, why would he need to spend that much time researching unless he was just padding the bill. He never did come up with even a remote defense plan even after I offered a few avenues which I still regret pursuing after speaking with other attorneys. Kept me informed, I was never even sure he would show up in court not to mention have anything to tell me about my case. BEWARE when I first spoke with Mr rolsch I explained to him that I could pay him only an agreed upon amount (already 2 times higher than everyone else) he said that was fine unless we had to go to trial. Six months after my case was over I received a bill for 3 times that amount. He ended up taking me to small claims for it. When I showed up for court I found that the entire courtroom was filled with his former clients with the same story. I was always told you pay for what you get and that's why I went with rolsch but there isn't one aspect of his business conduct I would recommend.

Jeffrey D Schiek is one of the worst lawyers in the United States. He simply did not know the points of the arguments, did not know how to question the other party during depositions, and gave really bad recommendations that made me lose thousands of dollars. Later, I hired a new lawyer who gave me a different recommendation that saved me thousands of dollars. I gave Jeffrey D Schiek all the materials beforehand, but Jeffrey D Schiek did not read them and did not study these materials beforehand. As a result, he asked stupid questions during the depositions that actually let the other party benefit. From what he recommended to me, it can only be concluded that Jeffrey D Schiek is very inexperienced and irresponsible. It would also not be out of place to say that Jeffrey D Schiek is not a smart attorney despite that he “has been licensed for 20 years”.

I hired Tamara Caban Ramirez to help me with my application for naturalization. I hired her and I was her client. She stated she would write a letter for the application as well. She told me that she needed full flat fee plus the cost of the initial consultation to start working on the case. I paid her $2200 when I met with her in early September and then delivered to her the documentation, including my passport, money orders, birth certificate and the application. Initially, I was optimistic because she told me what she was going to do to try to help me. After the initial meeting in September, I couldn't get a hold of her. I would call, email, but to no avail. This lasted into October. The first week of October, she finally had her receptionist tell me she was getting the application out. I followed up a week later, again via emails and calls but there was no response. .At the end of October, I sent an email indicating I no longer wanted her services (still didn't hear back) and then again in early November, I sent an email and certified letter firing her again. The following day, she contacted me stating that she just sent in the application, even after I fired her. I was able to stop the documents at the post office because with all that had not happened, I felt I needed to see the documents. And they were wrong. Originally, she told me she was going to hire a translator to certify my birth certificate and it would cost $60.00. I discovered she herself translated it but indicated in the application it was a marriage certificate, not a birth certificate. She used white out on pages and used pen to fill in numbers--you could still see the mistakes underneath the white out. There was candy stuck at the back of the application. There was also no letter, which I mainly hired her for. Currently, I am trying to get back my passport and other documents and a refund. I also feel I should receive a majority of the monies back since she didn't do anything that I hired her for. She will not respond to any of my emails or calls. In conjunction with not doing what I hired her for and being lied to, I didn't like it that Tamara sent off the application after I fired her and indicated to the USCIS that they should contact her if they had any questions.

After my consultation he sends over his stamp for a Venmo payment. I of course await for the retainer agreement and the agreed avenue of approach.. After reaching out regarding my concerns...he ignores my request for the retainer agreement for 30 hrs. Radio silence. Then tells me I already have a public defender and I'll do fine. Now for any attorney to make such a ridiculous statement! He refuses the case and abruptly cut any contact with him with out explanations. Scariest thing to have for an attorney. Doesn't contact you, walks away with no explanation, wants your money...doesn't see it your way he walks and answers to nothing. Then to compare a public defender as a good way to go....we all know it's not! My advice find a real attorney! .

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
