Lynn Johnson is an awful lawyer and very unprofessional. She consulted with my lawyer and put in an email that she was offering a resolution so we couldn't use it as evidence then continued to verbally assault myself and my wife by calling us names. She was reported to the Missouri Bar for unprofessional misconduct and an investigation was opened on her by the Missouri Supreme court. My lawyer said she was the most unprofessional lawyer he ever encountered in his 30 year professional career. She also put lies and perjury in legal documents knowing their false lies. Read her other reviews, she has displayed disgusting behavior. Stay away, I wouldn't recommend at all.

Horner was referred to me by legal shield. I Hired her March 1st 2018 she did not actually appear in court 1 time for me and did not do anything to help me while waiting for court set (trail) feb 2019 she then informed me Jan 2019 she needed more money to continue to be my lawyer for trail (feb 2019) after sending me a invoice (after me asking multiple times for invoice) of bugus fees she withheld from my retainer needless to say I was very angry and decided to take my “extra” money to a new lawyer which helped me get everything I wanted and what was owed to me in a matter of 27 days! worst experience ever and really feel ripped off to be honest

Very arrogant. Did not listen to what I told him. Didn't file important papers. Said he would take care of it but didn't. He has a reputation for when I sought another lawyer they were aware of his shortcomings. Wished I would have known this before I hired him and wasted my money.

This attorney is arrogant and abrasive to his clients ( especially women and children). He will have cases continued repeatedly to increase his billing hours. Several office appointments where we reviewed the same facts repeatedly. Court day was sloppy, and unprepared. Opposing attorney entered several pieces of evidence with no objections that should have been . This made an appeal hearing difficult. He forgot to call my witnesses, and enter some key pieces of evidence we had. This attorney at this point in his career seemed more focused on fraternizing than winning my case.

Cathleen has helped many people get on disability! The referrals she gets in her office is proof that she has helped a lot of client's and those client's refer new client's to her. She is not able to charge over $6,000 from back pay since that is the maximum amount she can charge. Anything over that would never be approved, therefore, she would never try to get more than the maximum. The work that goes into helping people get on disability is worth more than $6,000 if the client doesn't meet the criteria of being disabled in the eyes of the Social Security Administration but Cathleen has a huge heart and truly wants to help everyone that comes through her door. She also advances all the expenses to order medical records to send evidence to the Social Security Administration. I think it's fair to say that most of her client's don't have the money to order medical records and Cathleen shouldn't be stuck with the bill so she does try to get reimbursed for all medical expenses she advances after the she wins. A percentage of her client's do not pay their bill even after they get their lump sum payment of thousands of dollars! As for secretaries, for awhile, she had a hard time finding a good secretary. She now has a good secretary dedicated to helping client's get on disability. Cathleen has been practicing law for over 40 years so she comes with experience and a ton of knowledge!

In 3 months she had ran off at least 3 secretaries. Even revealed personal information about one of them, she didn't get my name right, sent letters to the wrong drs I did not go to along with not getting my name right. She said she assumed my last name was something else! Assumed! I had to gather all my medical records even though that is her responsibility. Rarely returned phone calls then when it was finally time for the hearing she behaved so bizarre as she wasn't familiar with the judge so she said she had hoped he wasn't a bible thumping republican! I hoped he was. Maybe more honest that way. Do to the extent of my injuries it was granted but then she had the nerve to try and charge ,e more than the 6000.00 dollar cap she received at my expense! Because she had to send me the letters she sent out. Because she continued to use incorrect information and contacts I had to police her. When I told her she is not entitled to more than the cap she said she wouldn't let me have my medical records back. That wasn't a problem since I'm the one that gathered all that info in the first place and I sent her the copies

John Witte is a decent person and a decent lawyer. It is unfortunately apparent that he has been at least moderately influenced by his less than competent law partner. Bob Krueger lives up to every negative review on here, and then some. He is so out of touch with reality that he actually thinks he has a right to insult, and belittle, and condescend to his own clients. Customer service was never high on his list of accomplishments I'm betting. And to be quiet honest, I can't really think of any relevant skills that could be on his list of accomplishments. After reading the reviews posted here, and meeting the "legend in his own mind" myself, I really feel like i would have a case against him for false advertisement since he was bragging about being the best lawyer in his field in the area. Right before he insulted me. But after he raised his voice and practically yelled at me for trying to have things both ways when the only problem was I couldn't understand any of the back and forth nonsense that was coming out of his mouth. Definitely do not seek professional aid from Mr. Bob Krueger. He's not the best in the area, obviously. He's borderline delusional because he's so out of touch. And people going through what is quite probably the worst and most stressful time in their lives, don't need to hand over fistfuls of money to someone just to have that person talk down to them and obviously not earn a damn dime of his pay. He's a blowhard. All show. No go. Save your money, your chances, and your precious piece of mind. Go somewhere else.

Seriously. I hired Scott for a custody case, and now I realize why people (and other lawyers in Ozark) questioned why I went with him without even considering a sit down with them. If you hire Scott, be prepared to never hear out of him. If you do, it will only be email. He never returns phone calls and you'll only see him in person when he wants money. He never reviewed my case before we went to trial, and I wound up losing custody to a registered sex offender (mind you I have zero felonies and I'm a woman). As if that wasn't enough, he asked for $3,000 from me...never saw him again. He then tells me that I need to hire an appellant attorney. Funny how when I emailed him asking about a refund, he can't respond to that. He royally screwed me and my kids over. I have already made back the money I lost, but I will never have anything to do with him ever again. DO NOT HIRE HIM!!

I paid scott upfront $3,200 cash for a custody case of mine. He told me it could take awhile with most custody cases and to be patient and let him do his job. When he finally did send me the paperwork to sign it had the wrong kids name on it. I left several messages on his voicemail because he never answered any of my calls. I was finally able to reach him through email but by then he told me he was no longer my lawyer and my case was thrown out. Now im raising my son alone with no help from him. I've had to go through the state because after he took my money i couldn't afford to hire another lawyer and to be honest after him I'll never in my life trust another lawyer. He has now suggested that I contact another lawyer hes friends with because he no longer handles family cases... Which is odd.. Thats explains why mine never got handled. And there is no refund either because hes a lawyer and he'll just drag this out in court until im out more money. I pray that nobody ever has the same experience i had with this lawyer. I was told he was the best so I was so excited when I hired him. It was the most costly and upsetting mistake of my life. I wish I never trusted Scott Hinote with my money or my case. I paid him in full after our first visit i never did him wrong. I have no idea how this guy sleeps at night knowing hes robbed hard working single fathers just trying to finalize my custody. I'm sure their are good lawyers out there that care about their clients but this isn't one of them.

Every week I’ve had to reach out to her for updates and she continuously told me the same thing each time we spoke. She kept telling me she was working on getting me new court dates which she never got for me. I called and got new court dates on my own today and did all this within an hr. She is not willing to refund me any of my money so I will be going forward with a BAR complaint against her and I will also be taking her to small claims court to make her pay me my money back and for wasting my time. Multiple miss-steps and oversights with very little willingness to provide insight into her next steps. When questioning her plan to feel comfortable with where my money was going, she quickly turned to bullying tactics to achieve an additional retainer. As a paying customer, she made a tough situation worse and I was left feeling like I was throwing money away. I went through a bankruptcy 2 years ago. I was supposed to have my home debt reaffirmed and she did not follow though on getting this done. She blamed my mortgage company for not following through and did not offer to fix the issue. Now my mortgage has been discharged and I cannot refinance my mortgage without reaffirming the debt which involves reopening the case and lots of fees that I cannot afford. If she had done the job I paid $1500 for in the first place this would not have been an issue. I would have had this off my plate 2 years ago. I contacted her about this at the time I was informed of this matter and she and her staff became very nasty with me and basically blamed me and Wells Fargo for this not being taken care of. 1) she was paid to take of this for me and 2) where was the follow up on this by her office. I would not recommend her to anyone and I will never use her services again as I am in a real pickle now.

Do not hire Dan Ross. He is unprofessional and will never return your calls. He is a defense attorney but gave off body language that he was on the victim's side. I hired and paid Attorney Dan Ross while acting as the Power of Attorney for a loved one. Daniel J. Ross was paid in excess of $75,000. Once paid, he left his client in his rearview mirror. When more assertive efforts were made to get Mr. Ross do his job, he retaliated and completely laid down on his client. The sentence received reflects Dan Ross' dereliction of duties and is far worse than what he quoted when his client was deciding whether to plea or go to trial. The Supreme Court of Missouri manages the state's lawyer discipline system through its Office of Chief Disciplinary Counsel (OCDC). Having now received a copy of the 24 page report from the OCDC regarding Dan Ross' disciplinary action in 2011, it is clear other individuals and families experienced exactly what we have. Our letter to the OCDC is in the mail. Dan Ross putting you on notice that any efforts to retaliate or intimidate will not be tolerated.

Arrested 10/15, Mr. Garnett made his first court appearance for me 11/18 for misdemeanor DWI. Still awaiting restricted license info to get back and forth to work, still no arrest paperwork from the DA, & no idea when my next court date was until I looked on CaseNet. This man does not answer the phone or return your calls, seemingly hiding behind his polite staff. I've called numerous times weekly to be told EVERY TIME he's "in court in another county". If you're OK with handing someone (10) $100 dollar bills and then forgetting about it, he's your guy. Otherwise, how about some expected communication? When I finally got through today and voiced my concerns, he told me he had NOTHING new to share and didn't like my attitude. Wow. I'll probably do jail time now, but DON'T waste your time and money on Andrew Garnett. I wish I'd paid someone else my hard-earned money who might seem to care. The only time I saw him face-to-face, he bragged about being known by "word of mouth". Based on my experience and many others here, that just can't be entirely true. Well, maybe he'll do a stellar job in spite of it!

Andrew was not my first attorney but he should of been. I remember my first attorney telling me Rich don't worry they will never be convicted on the word of a felon and a registered pedophile. I have the messages saved so this is not hearsay...js. I tried to defend myself and had my right taken away by our corrupt legal system. I was sentenced to 26 years for defending myself. I then got a second opinion from Andrew. I was not promised anything but he told me he believed in me and would work hard to make for me. Well he did more than just try he made case law with my Appeal. My Appeal was done with such diligence that we wont 5 of the 6 points brought up. This is big only 1 in 10 people ever win their Appeal. My Appeal has been used over 9 times to help people with their case. I owe this man my life because when everyone gave up on me he didn't. If you are reading this review trying to decide on an attorney take this from me. Andrew will fight for you and do what's best. I can say this with no doubt!!!! If Andrew would of been my first Attorney I never would of been convicted and never would of gone to prison. I am not a felon and I believe that is because he is the best Attorney ever. Thank you for giving me my life back.

INCOMPETENT, AND UNPREPARED. Don't hire him!!!!! I, Hired him to do my divorce. A year later it was still pending . He was never prepared in court . He would always arrive late to court , dirty with coffee stains on his clothes and shirt untucked. He was a dam mess. He never knew what he had to file nor did he ever know what was going on with the case. The only thing he was good at was asking for more money. Be careful, he will suck you dry. So I fired him and hired another attorney and within a month the divorce was settled and done with. I never thought an attorney could be so disorganized. I then found out he does traffic tickets and claims to know other areas of law. Believe me he will tell you he can do your case just to take your money. Don't believe him; please go to another attorney. Don't let him practice with your case. You will regret it and loss alot of money. What he needs to do is stick with traffic law and stop hurting people by taking a case he has no clue of what to do. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

She took $2000 from my friend who hired her as her bankruptcy lawyer. That was over 2 years ago. She never filed in all that time. She is ignoring requests to have the money, at least a portion of it, refunded. She made excuses about the court being backed up due to COVID ... a year after the court opened back up. This is small town USA, the courts weren't that busy for the past 2.5 years. Her assistant is a MASTER at answering questions with "I don't know," or "I don't have that information." Never once did my friend receive any kind of answer to anything. How do you keep a bankruptcy filing fee when you never filed the paperwork with the court? How is this legal or ethical? A complaint will be filed with the Bar Association of Missouri. Anyone else who has been screwed by this woman should do the same. She does it because she knows she can get away with it. hired Dennis Bonner' law firm in June 2012 to represent me in a simple child support/visitation case. I deployed to Afghanistan in January 2013 and in March 2013, Dennis Bonner informed me of his motion to withdraw from the case. The motion to withdraw took me by total surprise especially since I had provided Mr. Bonner with all items and documents that he had requested before I deployed. After talking with Dennis Bonner, he decided to continue to represent me in my case while I was deployed to Afghanistan. I put my full trust in Mr. Dennis Bonner; however, in my absence, I found out that Mr. Bonner had missed court appearances. In addition, Mr. Bonner rarely emailed or called me and totally failed to inform me of the status of my case. I was not made aware of any case hearings and I found out about case ruling month's after they had been ruled on and to add insult to injury, I found out case rulings thru the opposing party. Again, I was informed by the opposing party -month's later -of the outcome of my case, not by my hired attorney Mr. Bonner's inadvertence and excusable neglect were clearly recognizable and on display in my case. I put my full and complete trust in Mr. Dennis Bonner and he misrepresented and essentially neglected my case. I would not recommend Mr. Bonner as an attorney to any client.

In my experience with this attorney and in my opinion, Mr. Briggs's legal advice was horrible for me and I thought his representation in court was even worse. I hired him for a divorce case and he threw me under the bus, I felt, and made a pathetic attempt at negotiating in my best interests. He never fully went over everything with me and he rarely communicated with me. He failed at forwarding documentation to me that was vital for the case. My family hired this attorney to manage the probate for my mother's estate, since she left no will. We were told since it was such a small estate (less than $40K), that it would only take 6 months to finalize everything. It is now 15 months later and the estate still is not settled. The attorney has had to file motions multiple times because of errors in her filing, she won't communicate with us for weeks on end and has no real explanation as to why the process is still dragging on. We don't believe she has ever done probate before, but it would have been nice to know that at the beginning, so we could have hired someone knowledgeable.

I have beef using Mr Fryer for several years now for different cases mostly traffic n such and he has always been amazing! Was a very fair flexible overall good lawyer until closer to 6 months ago when he literally just disappeared! I paid him for him to represent me in a municipal case from 3 years ago! He has been been on the case since day one, he told me the case was dismissed n was waiting for him to inform me of my fine amount so I could pay it and move forward with my life! Didn’t hear from him for a few months so started trying to contact him leaving message after message after message on his office v.m. With no such luck!! Now Patrick has always been a little difficult to get ahold of due to his case load but when I looked up my case on Missouri casenet I see that my case was never dismissed and he has not appeared on my case since last October and I now have an warrant for my arrest due to failing to appear on it!! He is still listed as my attorney on the case there has never been a motion to be removed from the case and still Mr. Fryer is 100% unreachable!! I call his law firm to only get the same recording as I always have with no attempt from him as any response to my numerous messages via vm and text! This is completely a violation of my contract I have with him and tbh absolutely not like him at all! I am worried about him and yet very angry for the unprofessionalism and disrespect I have been shown as of this date!! If anyone else has had this same issue please leave a review as well so we can get some kind of answer to the question if the year “What in the hell has happened to Mr. Patrick Fryer attorney at law!!!??” PS-I have referred many people to this man threw out the years with no issues ever until now!

Ronald Nguyen took advantage of me when I visited his office for only a few hours. He assured me he could handle my case and provide everything needed to complete it. I believed his lie and agreed to let him handle my case and signed a contract to let him handle the case. The next time we met he demanded $2,000 up front and had completely changed personality also completely chainging what he assured me initally basically telling me my case was dead in the water and he could not assure what he initally did. I quickly made it clear I didn't want to pursue this any further and he still demanded thousands of dollars for 0 work done. He did not provide me any helpful documents or consultation that was benefical to my case. After my case is resolved I will be filing the appropiate charges against Ronald Nguyen.

I would like to think it was simple distraction of personal issues at the time.. yet conflict of interest after filing complaint for failure of services and award of costs returned to client. There will never be repair of damage or further harm which occurred and no lawsuit has been filed to recover damages. He does quite well upon his own personal case which shows he can succeed in criminal cases. Our conflict involved a baby mama of mine who personal friends with him and wife.. maybe neither of us was aware, I will leave it at that..

This guy was appointed as a special defender on a case I was falsely accused of. I had a video proving my innocence. His hired help did not know what thumb drive was even compatable to the computer they had at the Owensville office. They did not return phone calls. Then when they did they did not tell the truth about filing for a speedy trial when it was requested several times. I found him to be completely useless. And would not recommend him to anyone for any reason. I fired him. After I fired him , he filed to remove his self from my case. Based on the grounds that I wanted a speedy trial against his better judgement.. Innocent people don't want to drag on something they did not do. I feel he wasn't working for me. Or it could have been he wasn't experienced enough to know what to do. Either way, I can't truthfully give him even one star.

My lawyer only extended and made matters worse. She never answered calls and never showed when she should have. She never got back to anyone. She speaks to people very profanely and claims its just being straight forward. She promises things and then turns it around. She is inconsistent and likes to belittle and insult people. Telling people they are worthless and calling profanities is not the job of a respectable lawyer. She caused me to lose my children when she was supposed to be helping due to neglect of my case. Very disrespectful and tactless. Not prompt either and breaks commitments and promises. I would not recommend her.

He talks doom and gloom about your case to make it seem like he's actually doing something advantageous for you, when in fact his recommendations and work is the absolute worst. I saw three other lawyers after all was said and done with concerning the particular case he handled and they thought I represented myself. All three were absolutely dumb founded I retained the services of a lawyer to settle for the conviction he recommended. Others that I know that retained his services feel the exact same way. I can't urge you enough to stay away from this lawyer. As for the rest of his firm/partners I'm not familiar with them so I can't say.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
