Not in a million years I thought I would be sitting in a divorce lawyer office. But Tim was with me the whole time making me feel comfortable and like we were going to get what I needed no alimony. Thanks a lot Tim. Anyone looking for a good counsel he is it!

I unfortunately had an injury claim and had no idea how to go about it or what to do. I was frantic and I knew the financial burden would immensely impact my life. I am forever grateful for contacting Tim and his team. They guided me and were essentially at my beck and call. Their knowledge and experience really made the process a breeze. They truly care about their clients and give their undivided attention. Half way into my lawsuit, I with bad luck encountered another claim and not once was I questioned or felt like I was the problem. I coincidentally was involved in two claims in just one year. I truly couldn’t have done it without them by my side. Not only did Tim and his team go above and beyond. We also settled with a breeze and an outcome more than expected. I can’t emphasize enough, you will want him by your side when dealing with a personal injury case.

I can't say enough good things about Brenda and her assistant Amy. I first met with Brenda when I was still in shock after my ex-husband left our family via text for his mistress. I interviewed several attorneys and immediately felt the most comfortable with Brenda. While I wasn't ready to file at that time, I was so grateful for her support and advice. A couple months later I did file for divorce and I couldn't have asked for better service. She is an excellent communicator and advocate. She answered questions/emails quickly and billing was transparent. She always made sure I was well prepared and understood every step of the process and exactly what to expect. I felt overwhelmed at some points, but always knew what I needed to do next. She helped me achieve the best possible outcome for myself and my kids. She also provided excellent advice when I needed the help of our local police department to stop my husband's girlfriend's harassment of me and my son. Truly she was part legal counsel and part counselor. I never thought I would find myself going through a divorce, but I couldn't have been in better hands. Don't hesitate to hire Brenda!

I originally hired a divorce attorney out of Salt Lake City where I live. He seemed smart and I figured he was similar to most attorneys and would do a great job. Long story short, I fired him. He was not a good advocate, a very poor communicator and I was being taken. A friend of mine recommended Brenda Beaton, she is based out of Ogden, but well worth the drive. However, I needed a "great" attorney, so I interviewed and hired her that day. Brenda is a take charge attorney. She is intelligent, knows the law, and fought hard for me. She communicated everything she was doing and would always reply if I had questions or concerns. I highly recommend hiring Brenda.

I first met Nathan at my first appearance where he gave me his card and told me what to say to the judge to get enough time to find counsel. I reached out to him and he helped me work out a payment plan and let me know how he would proceed from there. The past 6ish months, he has taken amazing care of me. He was always available to meet to answer any questions or concerns I had. His knowledge of our justice system is impeccable and he was able to significantly reduce and even dismiss some of my charges. He’s even willing to go back to court with you the next year to fully close your case. I would absolutely recommend him to anyone looking for an attorney. Thanks a billion, Nathan!

My case had to do with custody of my child. Michael did not represent me well in court or I should say almost not at all. Me and Studebaker had conversations about things the other party was trying to use against me and he was supposed to look into some things to get it dismissed because it was incorrect. He completely forgot about these conversations we had, and in court when the matter was brought up he looked at me and asked “is that true”. Very unprofessional when we had a couple conversations about it. When I tried speaking to him to have him bring up certain points he pretty much shushed me and I looked ridiculous while the other party got his way. I left the court so in shock and in tears because I did not deserve that treatment especially since I had to pull money out of my butt for this help that I did not get. When trying to reach out to studebaker for a week to go over my concerns, he would not even give me the time of day unless I was on his schedule and he was charging me by the minute. So I never even got to voice my concerns to him because he did not care. I would not recommend him for custody. He just showed up for the money and didn’t pay attention to the clients needs and facts AT ALL and certainly did not remember them. I am a great mother who had financially provided while the other party got away with not financially providing for 4 1/2 years. I have always worked and I deserved much better than that.

My daughter used Mr. Stevens with her DUI case. Don't bother obtaining his services it is like throwing money to the wind. He just likes to collect your dough. He did absolutely nothing for her than what she could have done for herself. He doesn't care and put little to no effort into her case. He didn't even know what was going on in trial that he should have known. He screwed her royally. If she had obtained another lawyer, things would have come out a lot better.

So we hired Roy to help my husband with something. We went to court the first time and Roy did nothing to defend my husband. NOTHING! my husband paid him $2200 to hire him and that was all he owed. Well we the went to court the 2nd time and Roy AGAIN did nothing to defend my husband with a case we had. He would say, “ I will take care of you , don’t worry. I will help you. “. He didn’t take care of anything. He just kinda shrugged his shoulders like oh well. We went to court again to appeal something and the judge told my husband that he would let him get rid of what he had going. Well everything was ok. Well the Roy emailed my husband and said the he owed $750 dollars for extra work that he went above and beyond to get the outcome we did. And then he told my husband that, “I cannot control the judge.” He said if we do not pay him he will take us to small claims court, get a judgement on him and take it from you, the choice is yours. He never said a word about my husband having to pay more. I will never recommend anyone to him.

I went to this lawyer for some custody issues that I esa having with no ex husband, from my first cunsultation, it didn’t seem like he care about my case, what he esa more excited es stalkear about his fees, We went infringe of the judge and this lawyer esa not reas y for my case, he didnt know what to say because he had to look on my file in front of the jugde to see what to say, it was really embarrasing. My ex husband went to court with no lawyer and he was able to represent himself a los better than the representation I got with a lawyer. I Worked so hard to give him good evidence with police records, and my son therapist records, but since he didn’t took the time to review my case before court all my evidence was useless. The second time we had to go to court, Mckay was late an hour, because he went to the Ogden Court instead of Farmington, He was not prepare as usual, and he tried to charged me $350 for that hour he was late. I golf his assistan that I was not going to pay for his musítale, on top of me having to wait for him, he talked to Mckay and they waived that fee. The level of unprofessional from this so called Lawyer is unbelievable, he only care about your money and not your case. When you look for a lawyer you want someone that is going to be on your side and someone you can trust… trust me you are not going to find that here. Do your research before you give this man your trust and money.

Mr. McKay was very thorough and took the time to review all the paperwork dealing with our issue. He was willing to use his legal knowledge to go above and beyond to deal with our problem and keep a level and legal head to get a resolution that was above what we had expected. We were happy that this was handled professionally and knew the law to get fair compensation for our family.

Ryan did not do his homework about how to deal with DOPL. Ryan accepted payment to represent me in a case, then he did not follow any of their requirements to defend me. Advised me I did not need to go to a meeting with the board of nursing. I ended up without a job and a suspended license. He grossed his flat fee of 2500 dollars. I trusted him.

I was charged criminally in Farmington. Ryan took the time to go through the evidence and even sent out requests for more evidence to see if the case could be argued from a different angle. I could tell that the prosecutors respected him and listened to what he had to say. Also, the Judge listened to Mr. Bushell and considered his arguments. I have been in court before and it seems that court is where Mr. Bushell excels. I would recommend him to family and friends. He was worth the money.

A despicable excuse for an attorney. Very non-professional. Has been disbarred for stealing over 100K of his clients' money. Still steals his clients money with all the unnecessary documents he tricks his clients into filing to prolong the case by several months, even years. Lies and files false documentation. Should be disbarred again!!!

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
