Steven went above and beyond our expectations as a lawyer. We hired him after our lawyer said there wasn’t anything that could be done for my husband, who was currently incarcerated serving on his sentence. So we took a chance when hiring Steven, but he came so strongly recommended by others, that we had to. Within two weeks of doing so, Steven was able to get my husband released from jail and serve remaining sentence on house arrest!!! We will never use anyone again!!!

He promised me a large settlement and almost two years later I have nothing to show for it. He did such a bad job he was force to recuse himself due to various ethic violations. He filed several suits on behalf of our organization only to have them throw out due to ethics and procedural errors.

I printed three pages of lawyers that were supposed to have been pro bono for estate litigation. I went through every single one, either they were dead, retired or they no longer did pro bono. Out of the three pages that I contacted, five people responded, to inform me that they no longer did pro bono. The lawyer referral service does not update their information at all.

WORST ATTORNEY EVER. Complained about working "for less money" as I am pregnant and I am having a c section and trying to get a rental. I went through Neighborhood Legal Services and so it was discounted to save my son from his dad's horrible housing situation. The point of discounted is for individuals who need help but can't afford $2500-$4000 for a retainer. He made a vast amount of threatening and inappropriate statements to me and my mother in office. We spent hours sitting with him so he could type up the case and have the story straight to explain to the judge my son should be with me. He told me he was going to file an emergency petition so my son couldn't leave the state. He had me highlight the conversations where I stated I did not give my ex permission to enroll him in school via the co parenting app. He ended up giving my case to my ex when I have full custody per the legal parenting plan. Substantial evidence was provided to my attorney to prove I live with my mother in Beaver County and he NEVER presented them to the judge to show her that I was a resident. He also did not summon my witnesses to provide more evidence of my residence and my fiance who was willing to truthfully testify the west Virginia house was his. My ex said I lived in West Virginia, which was my fiance's residence, and they ran with that when I HAVE ample proof. The judge interviewed my son off record and he stated we stayed at the residence out of state not LIVED there, and the judge counted that as I lived there. The attorney did not even show her my evidence. He was hitting on the other attorney and laughing with her instead of caring about my son's well being. My ex kept my son from talking to me and he did not know about the residence situation. He thought I would have moved in there, but my son didn't know that I stayed at my mother's and my fiance moved in with us because I'm having a baby. I took my ex for contempt charges for with holding my son in 2020 and I dropped the contempt charges because he sent him home and was threatened to send him home or jail time. I provided that evidence as well as a bunch of other evidence. My ex had NO relationship with my son for 5 years of his life, then started tons of drama and lies. My ex had an attorney fire HIM because he got caught in his lies. This attorney will take your money and screw you. Do not hire you will regret it cause money is everything to this greedy man.

I hired Tom Farley to represent me on a couple of cases I had he took his 2,500 retainer and after I gave him my retainer he said your best bet is go personal bankruptcy I followed his advice and gave him more money to do some research for me gave him more money and he did nothing and then I pulled myself out of the bankruptcy Court with money left in retainer and asked him to represent me on a local case and told me he needed additional money and I refused so he removed himself off of my case and got a judgment against me. This lawyer should loose his ability to practice law! Read his reviews they don’t lie! Next stop for me is the Bar to file a complaint!!!!

I hired Tom Farley to represent me in a case against a Tafton, Pa boat dealer. I purchased a new boat that needed thousands of dollars in repairs. I paid for a marine survey and sent it to Tom. He found someone to write a repair estimate for $700, so I gave him another $700. He then comes back and said the guy needs to see the boat in person and wanted $300 an hour plus mileage to drive from New Jersey to Pennsylvania. So basically this guy wanted almost $7,000 to write a repair estimate. I said no to that and requested that my $700 be refunded. Never happened. I filed a dispute with my credit card company to get the $700 back. All Tom had to do was write the boat dealer a letter stating that he's not allowed to sell a new boat that needs thousands of dollars in repairs. This case clearly represented fraudulent trade practice and breach of contract. I also filed a dispute with my credit card company for his $2,500 retainer fee and got that back. Because of Tom's lack of interest and motivation, I lost over $11,000 on this boat purchase. Do not use Tom Farley for any type of legal matter. He should retire and get on with his life's work because it isn't the law.

Thomas Farley was hired by the BOD to represent our community's interests, i.e., answer legal questions, conduct legal matters such as suing targeted companies and individuals, overseeing election process, public postings and interpretation of bylaws. Mr. Farley refuses to answer questions concerning current litigation when asked at community meetings he attends, acts only in the interest of a small group of homeowners, helps the board manipulate policy in their interests over the entire community, is abrupt, rude and defensive when called upon. Furthermore, he doesn't not endorse transparency with regard to community affairs.

I would highly NOT recommend. I ended up filing a complaint with the office of disciplinary counsel. Long story short, I paid him in full to file my divorce, the whole process back and forth with Paul was 1.5 + years.... he said it was filed and "waiting for the judge to sign." Paul's communication was TERRIBLE to begin with but when it got to the point that I didn't hear back for a few months, I ended up calling the prothonotary's office. Come to find out he NEVER filed all the documents. Still haven't heard from him. I went and filed all the paperwork myself and was divorced in 2 months. Complete waste of time. Completely unprofessional and a scam.

Who is this attorney Jay Whittle? Well, let me start by saying that he is the worst "attorney" in all of Central PA. His office address in Enola and Camp Hill are bogus, his offices do not exists! He only answers his cell phone when he feels like it, and he'll make sure you do time in prison because Whittle doesn't have the guts to advocate for his clients and when he feels that the judge's "demeanor" is that "they don't want bothered" he stays quiet which guarantees you being placed in handcuffs and taken to prison. Whittle doesn't even have an office, he does however has a dispensary. Getting people high and in prison is his thing! And when Whittle feels "offended" because you tell him the truth about what a sleezy, lousy "attorney" he is, his whittle feewings get hurt and he'll end up blocking your number from his phone! Do not EVER hire this good for nothing dude. You are guaranteed a prison sentence with him. I wonder where he got his law degree, in a cracker jack box maybe? What a waste of good oxygen!

Do not hire Jay Whittle as your attorney. Save your money and find someone that has more experience and an office. His address on Google and on the PA Docket is listed as "2480 East Market Street Enola PA". This is not a valid address. You can not find it on Google Maps. He does all of his meetings either over phone or at local shops with WIFI. And don't bother calling him. He won't answer. Not unless you send threatening texts. He likes to lose in court, take your money, then go "out of the country" after your hearing so that you have no way of contacting him. And when you are sentenced and placed in jail, don't bother calling him from jail because "he doesn't answer collect calls because that is money coming out of his pockets". Bottom line is, if you want someone that will FIGHT for you and WIN your case, find someone else. He won't care, he won't listen, and he won't be there. I'm not entirely sure that he even has a license to practice law. Find someone else with an actual office, and someone that will take the time to hear you, advocate for you, and fight for you.

As a mother of 4 I used her to get full custody back in 2013 and did not have an issue. As of January 2017 my oldest daughter and an old school friend tried to kill me I ended up in the hospital as a result 3 of the kids bio dad as my younger son is not his filed for emergency custody the judge gave my younger 3 back and didn't he go and file again as this man is a felon has drug charges is a drug addict/dealer and his girlfriend is a drunk who verbally attacks my children daily. As I have all the evidence Montgomery refused to give the judge and now my younger 2 children are suicidal hurting themselves and being neglected. Apparently she thinks this is good place for my children and did not help much but could charge me $5,000.00 for services. As I printed out everything needed and got all the evidence and info and it was not given anyway. And when I called to do a notice of appeal I get told it would be another $5,000.00 so I have to do it myself. Now my kids are suffering and no one wants to help them when all the evidence was right there.

Ms. Montgomery was my court appointed lawyer in a criminal case in 2011. When I asked to see the discovery in the case such as search/arrest warrants, the complaint and indictment, etc., she told me that I was not allowed to have them. She also told me that since my case was a federal one, that the only plea I could make was an open plea. She specifically told me that there was no such thing as a plea bargain where terms are prearranged and recommended by the ADA. She allowed me to be charged with a newer version of a law with more severe penalties than the old law that I should have been charged under. Finally, she knowingly recommended that I plead guilty to an offense that a clear reading of plainly shows did not apply to me. This lawyer is an ex district attorney's office employee, and clearly does not represent the best interests of her court appointed clients.

Mr Mazzoni is not someone that I would do business with for the following reasons. The man did not do any preparation for the meeting that I drove an hour and a half to and proceeded to give me indirect answers to any of my questions. He repeated himself on numerous points and went off topic with many tangents. He was not up front with any fees nor took the time to explain what process was involved . Having a concern of my time and resources, I wanted a legitimate estimate and I would never trust someone who was tight lipped on that from the start. Get someone who wants to invest the time in your case because this man will just give you a song and a dance.

Ms. Tandoh is a great lawyer - for the other party. Hired to assist me with my case, knew the other party was abusive and less than honest. Didn't matter. Came away from court with an order that was barely better than vague that I had to spend hundreds of dollars to get changed to protect me and my family. Her reason for not giving a good fight for us? She didn't want to deal with the other party's "drama". Definitely more concerned with her own ego than in actually giving any real compassion or fight for her clients.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
