I couldn't have picked a better attorney to represent me! I hadn't needed to hire an attorney before and Londa has been up front from the get go, very supportive and always makes sure I'm up to speed with what's happening. Londa is very easy to communicate with, very detailed and always makes sure I have realistic expectations every step of the way. I'm so happy I found her and would highly recommend her!!

This was my first time using legal services. Going through a divorce is emotionally wrenching. Londa was compassionate, empathetic, patient, knowledgeable and gave me excellent direction and advice. Londa responded back quickly to my emails or calls. She made me feel as if I was a very important client and yet I was really small potatoes. thank you for making a horrible situation tolerable.

The title says it all... Londa is simply amazing. I first came to her 2 1/2 years ago and she has become more of a friend than an attorney. She answered all of my questions and told me all of my options. She didn't sugar coat anything- she was very upfront and honest with me. There was domestic violence history in my case and she did everything possible to make sure that my child was protected. She communicated with me throughout the whole process and was always available when I needed her. She is a very thorough, honest, and knowledgeable attorney. She was so good that my daughter's father had three different attorneys through the whole case. He kept firing his attorneys because none of them could compete with her. She is an absolute bulldog (in a good way). Well worth every penny! I would recommend her to anyone. I really can't say enough good things about her.

Michael was a wonderful attorney from the start. I had the book thrown at me, every conceivable charge that I could have garnered.. I did. He talked me through the whole way, I live out of state and he made it possible for me to go to court over the phone. My charges were insane, the police department LOST all footage and audio of my arrest, as the state broke a few laws themselves when they pulled me over. He comforted myself and my family through out the ordeal. I did not get off scot free, but I was faced with 6 years in prison and a laundry list of charges on my record, I didn’t serve a day after the arrest. And one year later I’m off probation and so happy to have had his help. I hope to use him again to try and remove the only charge I received, and would gladly recommend his law firm for anyone who faces severe criminal charges. In a state that has such a corrupt legal system, I saw people being abused by their court appointed attorneys. People who didn’t stand a chance, who had more minor charges than mine, go straight to prison. It was a comfort knowing that he and his team were behind me. I have no regrets hiring him.

First, I want to say Michael Ziton is always there for you. From the moment he took my frantic initial call Michael Ziton showed compassion and understanding. He helped us through all our questions and concerns about the court process. After retaining Michael Ziton I knew I could call him anytime to answer our questions. He is very good about returning calls. Michael Ziton also kept us informed about the case throughout the entire process. He is amazing in the courtroom and is very well respected. We are grateful and appreciate all the effort Michael Ziton provided us. Michael Ziton is a great choice for a lawyer in Arizona.

I was cited for speeding, and read online it was advisable to hire a criminal attorney, because the excessive speed I was driving made it a criminal offense. To make matters worse, I had an unrestrained 7-year old in the back of my car, and I was also cited for that. So I had two citations to deal with: The criminal one (excessive speeding), and the civil one (unrestrained child). I found Mr. Ziton online, and based on Mr. Ziton's credentials on his website, I decided to hire him. What a fortunate decision! Mr. Ziton, was very courteous, and kept me updated on the status of my case. Mr. Ziton got my case changed from criminal to civil, and got the judge to agree to let me take a defensive driving course online; and once the course was completed, Mr. Ziton got my criminal case is dismissed. And once he presented proof I had a booster seat for my child, he also had that citation dismissed. Thank you, Mr. Ziton! You're the best!

I am incredibly grateful for Philippe Martinet’s guidance and support. He was more than just a lawyer—he was a steady source of reassurance throughout the entire process. From the very beginning, Philippe demonstrated exceptional patience, always taking the time to answer my questions thoroughly, no matter how many times I asked. Whether it was a brief call or an in-depth discussion, he was always available to ensure I fully understood every aspect of my case. What truly impressed both me and my family was Philippe’s honesty and integrity. We felt confident that we were in the best possible hands. He was straightforward, dependable, and unwavering in his commitment to achieving the best outcome for me. His honesty, coupled with his genuine care for his clients, made all the difference. I wholeheartedly recommend Philippe Martinet—not only as an outstanding lawyer but also as a truly good person who went above and beyond for us. Thank you

I went into my consultation expecting to come out feeling informed, instead I felt belittled and spoked down to. She gave me a lot of attitude and basically left me just as clueless as before the consultation. I’m honestly disappointed and upset that I even had to pay 100 dollars to even speak with her and got left with no good information. I would give zero stars if I could. I was living in CA and found out I had a warrant for a non appearance in Phx. I was referred by a family member to Alane Ortega’s law office and hired her. One of the first bad interactions I had with Alane was her and her office claiming my father called her office and was extremely rude to her staff. After she looked into her allegations, she later apologized for her accusation and realized it was another one of her clients and was not me nor my father. As my case went on I was told by the judge I was not able to leave the state, even though I didn’t have residency in Arizona at the time, she advised me that I could go back to CA. I chose to stay in AZ not to violate what the courts had ordered. I finally got to my court date ready for my hearing and they dismissed my case. A few months later they brought the case back up and I had another court date. During that time I fell on hard times whole out of state and asked Alane for an extension on my court date, which was granted. About a little over month before my new court date, I was in a terrible car accident where my car was totaled. I was injured and stranded while out of town while on business. With no car, injured and with a Doctors excuse I explained my circumstances to Alane and she was extremely condescending and rude. I showed proof and sent all the info I had about my accident. The court date was coming up and 5 days before my trial I sent an email and I heard nothing from Alane or her office about the extension. I assumed I needed to be there for my trial so I made travel arrangements and got to PHX so I would not violate. The day of my court date, I got a call 3 hours before my court hearing saying that It was postponed. Confused to why, I called the next day, I spoke to her receptionist and explained what my issues were. Alane jumped got on the phone and with the same condescending tone she argued with me claiming I was being rude to her staff, which was a blatant lie. Mocking me about falling on hard times and making accusation that I was mad about going to court and claiming I was trying to evade my court hearing making up lies that I called days later even though it was the day after my court date. Not only is she rude and unprofessional, she lies! This has been the worst lawyer experience I’ve ever had to deal with. Arrogant, unprofessional, rude, condescending and not empathetic. Find another law office. P.S. It wasn’t because of her “hard work” the case was first dismissed. It was because officer didn’t show up. This is ALL factually accurate.

Tom saved my life and protected myself and my child. HE IS THE BEST! It was my first time fighting in court. I was scared and lost. Tom gave good support and straight forward directions. The only thing I had a problem with is his response time back to me sometimes. Later learning it was my impatience. Also to save me money and both of us from nonsense time. Due to me over asking questions stemming from fear and anxiety. Questions that were answered in dew time. We were up against another tough lawyer. Tom stood strong, tough, firm, honest and confident. When I thought Tom was quiet in his responses to me. He truly was hearing me. When it came to time in court. Those little concerns were blasted right back at apposing council. Ammo I didn't even expect due to my naiveness. He fought toughly for me 100%. I received everything I was asking for, with a few compromises. He worked with me on payments that I could afford. I would highly recommend Tom and would use him again! He truly saved mine and my child's life! Thank you Tom!

I had Tom to represent my case during my complicated divorce and child custody. My case lasted longer than expected. He explained to me the family law clearly and he understood my situation. As I went through my divorce, I had tendencies to become subjective and wished the law could grant everything I desired. Tom was very objective in discussing to me what is possible and not possible according to the law. I went through with the process of my divorce not with a very clear understanding of what I can have and what I can not have and Tom was always there to explain to me whys of the process. He was very clear to explain to me that there was no guarantee that I will get what I wanted but the guarantee was he would do his best to get me and my son what is fair and he DID. My divorce and my child custody was done and I did not get what I wanted but I did have what is fair. I also had a clear understanding of why things work that way because Tom had educated me along the process. During the process, I also felt that I had somebody who truly care and would always be there to defend me and my son from the abuses. In the manner of communication, we did everything through email and only very minimal phone calls. However, I never felt that Tom and Tawsha missed to communicate with me. There was always an effective communication and when I was confused, I just sent an email and even if he was in vacation, I always got the answers from Tom or from his paralegal. I am forever grateful to Tom and Tawsha for guiding, educating and walking me through that very difficult and complicated process. I highly recommend Tom because he is the type of a lawyer who is very straight forward and realistic about his cases.

Thomas Alongi is a complete professional who is brilliant in his understanding and interpretation of family law. I came to him in a desperate state where a previous attorney had completely botched my case by untimely filings. My first encounter with Tom’s firm was a very compassionate and understanding conversation with his assistant/paralegal Tawsha. My case was complicated . I hired The Alongi firm at the eleventh hour. Tom was able to dissect and reconstruct years of information and get positive results in a short week. He kept me and my children safe from domestic violence and completely turned my nightmare situation into the results I desired. He and his staff have a deep and profound understanding of domestic violence and the Law. I could only say that my children’s lives and mine were protected through the courts only because of Tom Alongi’s just and fair way of dealing with a very complicated court system.

Never took my calls. Always ‘in a meeting’. Messages were either ignored or returned by her assistant, the ‘Queen of Condescension’. Continuances were made without consultation. Promised Court motions were never filed. When questioned about ability to give time and dedication to my case the answer provided were attempts to placate. Notification of the decision to leave firm was never made…just as my last hearing was due…forcing the firm to send someone unfamiliar with my case.

The law offices of Ray Slomski were outstanding in helping us get the only kind of justice we could for our daughter, who was severely injured due to medical malpractice. Ray fought hard for our daughter and kept her in mind in every action and word he spoke. Ray, Patti, Deana, Bucky, Adam and the rest of the team treated us with the utmost respect, and they treated our daughter so kindly. The entire team started to feel like family and I know we will always stay in touch with them. They provided us with the peace of mind knowing our daughter will have what she needs as she grows. They genuinely care and will fight for what you deserve, demonstrating patience and perseverance to fight the long fight for the families they represent. They have a passion to help families and it shows every day. I had complete trust and confidence in their abilities and they continually reinforced that trust through their actions. I would recommend this law firm to all who are seeking justice for medical injuries. You will not find a better, more caring or more honest team.

I strongly disagree with the previous review and feel compelled to share my experience with Mr. Le Lievre, who actually represented me (as opposed to the person who wrote those harsh words-for that person was on the receiving end of Mr. Le Lievre’s questioning and did not hire him) in a complex legal matter. Contrary to the claims made, I found him to be exceptionally professional, knowledgeable, and well-prepared. The interactions I observed between him and the court were respectful, and his legal strategies were innovative and effective. Labeling someone's career with such disdain not only undermines their professional journey but also overlooks their potential and the actual results they deliver. I recommend Mr. Le Lievre to anyone seeking a dedicated and competent lawyer who thinks outside the box to advocate for their clients; in addition, knows and abides by law, is a genuine listener, and is well respected by his peers, judges, and courts.

Joe Chornenky is an old school attorney. New firms won't even bother interviewing the police, or combing through tons of documents. Many firms are far more focused on their bottom line and turning over clients. A typical associate might have 30 clients assigned to them. Joe might have 3. I only stopped to comment because I was curious about the low reviews. He is definitely expensive, and if he keeps bringing that up, it is probably because he wants to be sure you can actually pay for the services. He isn't the most subtle guy. If you are making a mistake, he'll tell you to your face you are wrong. If he tells you to take a plea deal, you probably should. If he tells you to write a letter, or show up in a suit, and you don't - he's going to call you on it, and probably piss you off. He's large, loud, and I've seen a few people call him arrogant. I've also seen people call him a miracle worker, say that he saved their lives, all kinds stuff - because those are true too. He doesn't have a lot of patience for bullshit, and he gets things done. When I told him about my case, he immediately had helpful information for me. He knew who would be prosecuting the case, had specific questions about my arrest, and a strategy to beat it before it got to Grand Jury. If you need a sensitive, hold your hand kind guy, haha Mr. Chornenky might not be for you. Find someone else. If you need a freaking bulldog to defend your rights - give him a call. If the cops are lying, give him a call. If you are looking at serious prison time, give him a call. I can't say enough good things about Mr. Chornenky.

Joe and Rae carefully reviewed the case with me, and were really up front with me - I had several felony charges and many years or prison if convicted. We hired Mrs. Silva 4 years ago for our immigration battle and she is not like the typical lawyer that will tell you what you want to hear just to get your money. She handled everything great and was VERY knowledgeable on the immigration laws. We did run into a problem, but the blame was to be put on the USCIS and not her. She calmed our fears right away and handled that for us in a timely manner. I recommend her every time I meet someone in need of a great Immigration attorney. You might not be amazed by the amount of people working at her office, but her work will more than make up for that. Also, Immigration cases work as fast is the USCIS does, so don't expect overnight results. Our case took over 2 years due to different variables.

Beware of this attorney DesaRae Tucker, She does not know very much about criminal defense. I would have been better off with a state appointed attorney first off in our first meeting she mocked me another words, not believing me I was not in a state, where I could even speak for myself she took advantage of that, she lied to me and scared me to death into taking a plea. I was out of it and wondered myself at times. Is she on my side? I should have trusted that. She bullies people and is very defensive. Just please be aware and do not hire her for any kind of law. Her whole profile is deceptive.

I had a very contentious divorce and heated child custody battle. Mr. Poulos helped me prevail over the muck the ex was alleging against me. My experience with Mr. Poulos was he is very matter of fact and does not give in to the divorce drama. This helped me keep calm. He helped me understand the intricacies of the divorce process so I knew what I could expect. Sometimes it seemed prophetic to see what he told me before come to pass as the dissolution progressed. Although sometimes I felt like more action was needed on his part to litigate the issues, he was deliberate and detail oriented in following court rules and procedures to avoid muddying the waters of the conflict. Mr. Poulos helped me restore and save my parental rights, keep property and maintain reasonableness. After a long and nasty divorce, the court awarded the majority of what I wanted. I offer my sincere appreciation and thanks to Mr. Poulos's help.

I hired Alex Poulos to be my attorney and he he took my retainer and then quit when he realized I didn't have a shot at getting a lot of money. I was dumbfounded and left at a severe disadvantage. He also knew that the retainer that I had given him was all the money that I had. Pretty heartless. Hire at your own risk.

the person handling the complaints for the Arizona bar is So unethical and unprofessional with such arrogance it's easy to tell he does this to certain people often. He said that he didn't know about any law any law about unlicensed professionals. I had to send him the Arizona ruling to prove to him that unlicensed practicing of law illegal. He wouldn't investigate and told me that he is the only one I can talk and any calls I make will go to him so for me not to try to continue to get justice. I spent 20 asking him for a supervisor Non-Stop, because he couldn't give an articulable reason his denial. He told me if I filed a complaint it's only going to go to him. No one should treat someone else like this especially if Justice hasn't been served or even investigated. If he's done this to me he's done this to a lot of people. Since he didn't give me his name I don't know who to complain to I emailed the judge and they forwarded the emails to Tom he sent me an email saying again that everything's going to go through him but he won't give me a supervisor's name. If you've had this experience please share it

I wish I had read the reviews prior to accepting her as my attorney. Do not make the same mistake. I had a similar instance where Diaz was not responding to correspondence in a timely manner and not forwarding communication to review. Very unprofessional during and even after. My case was irreparably affected and not only am I in debt, my child will live with the consequences for the rest of her life. Worst family attorney ever. She should really take a step back from taking on clients when she knows she’s not capable of properly representing them. Judges know her and do not take her seriously!!

This attorney was hired by my wife after we had an investigation by CPS. This Attorney Brad Tenbrook was assigned to her case. After 9 months of incurring legal fees this attorney made no communication with my wife regarding the investigation by CPS even though she inquired several times about the status and placed a 20,000 dollar with the firm. It wasn't till my case with Scottsdale Court was resolved that they finally disclosed the CPS case was closed after 10 months of representation. This attorney was very condescending to her and extremely Rude. I would not recommend hiring this firm under no circumstances. They charged us over 10,000 for nothing. Made her worry for almost a year about CPS possibly making a big deal about this situation.

I was ignored when I asked for motions to be filed. Brad was not well informed on my case before walking in the court room. Unless you are forking over 20 grand or more you will not see any work that can be done cheaper by someone more experienced. I asked why a motion for contempt was not filed when my child went missing for 6 months AFTER I hired brad. His response was that it was not necessary. The ultimate issue. During trial because he did not file the motions I asked for I was denied custody of my child. I filed a bar complaint against him for not doing what I paid him for and he responded with a bill for having to explain himself to the bar. Disgusting right? If you are a victim of domestic violence, have dependency issues look elsewhere. They just want money.

Brad is an excellent attorney and handled my CPS case. He was knowledgeable, aggressive and creative In working a plan to quickly get through the convoluted CPS/juvenile court system. Not only did he quickly advocate for us, he had the utmost patience and compassion during the emotional roller coaster. He truly cares and is passionate about what he does. His staff is courteous, responsive and prompt. He has such a respected stance by all parties in the courtroom. I would highly recommend hiring Brad if CPS ever comes and knocks on your door. It was the best decision and he saved our family and most importantly, our children.

This attorney was court appointed, did not keep me informed of the case nor did he even speak during any of our court proceedings! He would "assure" me of what would happen but when it came down to it he barely said two words to the court in my defense. I have a mental illness (depression) and he was HIGHLY offensive to me. Didn't return phone calls or emails in the beginning and when I finally WAS able to reach him, he said my repeated phone calls were a sign of my mental illness. I stopped calling and was not kept informed of the case at all. Months later, he made the comment that "A Beautiful Mind was a good movie and proves I can be a good parent" How insulting!! I reported this to the State Bar of Arizona and was told he would be contacting me... well I'm still waiting. If you get this lawyer appointed to you, I HIGHLY recommend requesting a new one IN THE BEGINNING! Do not trust that anything will happen in your favor as long as I have. It will not happen.

After my second hearing, I was faced with decisions and some tough realizations both during mediation and in the court room. I found Mr. Westervelt to be very quick and responsive to phone calls, emails, and questions I had (prior to, during, and after my court hearings) in my case. Mr. Westervelt was court-appointed to represent me in my case and during the last hearing, it became very clear that I was going to need to hire an attorney if I wanted to have any real chance at a fair trial. Juvenile dependency cases, I have come to find out, are among the most complex and intensive cases within the court system-definitely requiring much more time and effort than a court-appointed attorney is able to give. I hired a new attorney later that month after speaking with around 20 (literally!) I would not recommend anyone to keep with a court-appointed attorney in juvenile dependency cases unless they absolutely have no choice. These attorneys are handling your case, along with a stack of who knows how many other court-appointed client cases, and then their clients paying them out of pocket on top of it. You are dealing with a child's life and future and these attorneys have the power to impact the outcome of that case. To not give these attorneys the time they need to dedicate themselves 100% to that kind of a case should be illegal...It is not fair to the attorney, the client, and most of all, it is unfair to the child involved. Mr. Westervelt showed to be trustworthy, responding to my emails and calls that day or the next, and seemed very knowledgeable in these types of cases. I was disappointed, however, that I did not receive minute entry copies of our hearings. Some very important issues I had brought to his attention for the past several weeks were not voiced at all during mediation or in the courtroom. During his opening argument at our last hearing, Mr. Westervelt didn't sound thoroughly prepared and was missing important documents he was referencing in his opening argument. If he had requested these from me ahead of time, I would have happily provided them. The information and references he gave were outdated and it was hard to follow his overall argument; he just wasn't ready. Assertiveness of any kind was completely absent and it was very hard to follow him. However, in the process of trying to hire a private attorney, I did speak to many offices who were familiar with him, one of them even giving his name out as a referral. The problem is, I am not sure if the referral is due to his performance or if his name was being thrown around because he is one of the few attorneys who specialize in these types of cases (there is a very small pool of them and trust me they are hard to find!) Overall and in the short time he represented me, I found Mr. Westervelt to be a very nice man, great at following up, never any issues with trust, and certainly has knowledge in his field of practice.

As a current client of Marcus Westervelt, I would like to give my first review as my case is just in its beginning stage. I swore off lawyers about 5 years ago after an experience that emptied my savings and did nothing more than I could have done myself. It was so costly that by the time the trial rolled around, I was the one walking in without a lawyer to represent me. I had to build my case myself and prepare to not only argue my case, but also battle the other party and his lawyer. My experiences only went downhill from there with very little exception. I know nothing about being a lawyer. The one thing I have learned over the years about lawyers is that it is not so much what you know about the law (that is the most clean cut out within the job) but it is about being transparent to who is working the system and how they are getting away with it. In today's society, the most obvious factors (money, politics, character) and the less obvious (unities like the free masons, personal preferences, first impressions) are exactly those which we are caught in as we try to solve what can be a very complicated or a very simple equation, depending on how good of a lawyer you are I would imagine. That question should be simple and Marcus Westervelt is the first lawyer I have ever dealt with that initially laid it out for me. He asked me, what do you believe your case is really about? Very simple, very clean cut...On my first impression of him, I found myself walking into a conversation where time was extremely limited and the questions on both ends were almost infinite. Marcus kept me on track in those 15 minutes we had upon our first meeting. He walked into our meeting not only with the ability to communicate the other party's issues but also ask me what mine were. I like to believe that this was his way to answering that one simple question: What is this case really about? I found myself rambling in my nervousness and overwhelmed in the situation alone. He was assertive to stop me and pull me back on track. If I tried to tell him" how it was", he would remind me who the lawyer is because I believe that no one knows my case like I do, but then again I am not the lawyer and I need to be reminded of that. I guess some may feel a bit peeved at a certain level of assertion, but I walked out of that meeting with a smile inside. If he is this way with his clients, I have no doubts how he handles those on the opposing side. I have visited his office and had contact with two of his staff members to date. I always get a phone call returned and his full attention on my case and my case only. If he cannot focus on me, then we schedule a time that works for both of us. So far, he has not been flaky or careless of my case to any extent. He does not hesitate for a moment to give his honest opinion even if it is the last thing I want to hear. He just lays it out there. We have some time to go before my case concludes, but I am very confident that I finally have representation that doesn't make me simply feel like just another form of job security for someone else in this country.

We hired Dan back in June of 2013 to defend our son for criminal charges he was facing. The law office was refferred to us by a family member, and Dan was assigned to our case. From the beginnning, he was very compasionate about our situation and explained to us what our son was looking at, what the options were, and what steps we needed to take. He took charge of the case and I never had to worry about what was going on. I knew he would work as hard as he could for us. I asked that he contact me weekly via text message, phones calls, or email to provide me status updates. He provided me his personal cell phone and I was able to text him at any time and he would get back to me timely. He never hesitated to provide, even if he had none. He conducted numerous interviews via phone and in person with people that could help my sons case. My son was possibly facing years in prison, but in the end only served 2 days in jail thanks to Dan and all his hard work. I was never a believer in Attorneys and felt it was a waste of money. But Dan proved me wrong. He cared about us, and fought to save my sons future. Thank you DAN KAFFANA!

Kaffana failed to file certain time sensitive court documents and Kaffana stated he did file them. He failed to timely submit a subpoena and he wrote in incorrect information for the subpoena. Kaffana never attached the transcript/evidence needed for an appeal submitted to the Court of Appeals. The CoA threw out the appeal solely because there was not the transcript/evidence needed for the Opening Brief of the appeal. He has lied to my Ex's counsel and stated I was difficult to reach when I had been emailing Kaffana and made several phone calls with voicemails left at his office. He withdrew as my lawyer because he stated he could not get a hold of me for 30+ days, which was false. The State Bar is investigating this matter. He has detrimentally ruined my life for my kids and I.

Currently she is working in a non-profit sector as a bar counsel but having her in the position is a mistake and betrayal to the public. She helps abusive lawyers who take clients' money in fraudulent manners. She makes biased decisions by skipping processes required by the rule. She is caring for her own safety by to not antagonize lawyers in her region rather than serving for justice. It is really strange that Taylor, assigned to my case, made a robo-decision, without steps required the rule, for the greedy lawyer while at least two experienced counsel and lawyer found my case an issue...one even told that he has never seen so egregious case. Taylor should be investigated by the public. I do not think she is working in serious manner. I confirmed her activity on SNS during her work hour, while she took no time to take proper steps before decision. One more important thing. Her ethical standard is low enough to approve the fraudulent behavior by the above-mentioned lawyer (for example, critical facts which would make clients stop legal battle were cautiously hidden), then she would do the same thing to her clients when she goes back to a private sector after leaving her current position. Be careful.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
