I got hit by a car in 2017 and had no idea what to do. To make matters worse I had found a lawyer for my case prior to Matt, but when push came to shove she dropped me- but Matt stepped up. During the entire ordeal Matt pursued every option we had diligently and aggressively. I never felt left in the dark about what was going on or what was going to happen next. His communication was top notch and his representation of my case (which was a complete success) was as good as it gets. If you're looking for a stand up guy who cares about you and your case and wants to win- talk to Matt.

Matt was there for me right from the beginning in my personal injury case. He took the time to explain all sides of the issues involved and was persistent and professional. Over the course of months on my case he was always easy to talk to and he kept me informed regularly. I was very pleased with the outcome and would recommend his services to anyone in need of a smart, thorough, and passionate attorney.

Yes he is out of mult county, but it was obvious from the first moment he walked into court that he is well respected in Clackamas County as well. Every attorney, both defense and prosecutor, greeted him with handshakes and smiles. He was able to get me probation when my first hired attorney could not. Well worth the $. He is down to earth and talks to you as an equal. Unlike most attorneys whom are condescending!

Where do I start? From the moment I contacted Jake I felt at ease. Facing criminal charges is no joke and to say I was stressed out would be an understatement. Jake listened to my side of the story and spent nearly an hour with me. He went over several different ways he could approach my case, including ones that didn't involve hiring him. I decided to have him represent me and it was the best decision I could have made. Jake's knowledge of the legal system was amazing. Through the whole process he was easy to get a hold of and worked around my schedule. Even at 9 pm he was working on my behalf. He was able to get the charge dismissed and kept me out of the system, protected my family and saved my career. He's a fantastic person who works off the facts, passes no judgement and does his level best to get you the most desirable outcome. Thank you a thousand times, Jake!

Jacob Braunstein is the only attorney I'll ever work with if I can help it. He has represented both me and one of my adult children on different issues and I couldn't be happier with his services. I sought help from Mr. Braunstein when I needed to file bankruptcy. He and his staff function like a well oiled machine and I recommend him to everyone I know. Mr. Braunstein is very patient and obviously cares about his clients. I had a ton of questions but he didn't treat me like I was a bother and he took a lot of time to answer all of my questions. He was also able to work with my schedule, which meant meeting me on the weekend. He's a great attorney who really seems to care about his clients.

I was referred to Jake by one of my good buddies who'd gotten into some legal trouble before. He said, "Call Jake. The dude's awesome!" So I called on the weekend expecting to get a voicemail and he actually picked up the phone. I explained my situation and he said he could meet with me that afternoon since I work long hours all week. First off, my friend was right. Jake is really laid back and easy to talk to. He didn't judge, he just wanted to hear my side of the story. He didn't try to push a contract at me or pressure me into hiring him to help me with my case. He was straightforward, honest, and told me about all of my options, not just the ones that involved hiring him. I ended up choosing Jake to represent me that day. It was one of the best decisions I ever made. He knew the process inside and out and he helped me every step of the way. It was obvious the judge knew him. She told me right there that Jake had gotten me the deal of the century and normally the prosecutor doesn't agree to things like that. Thanks to Jake and all the work he did on my case, I was able to get the most serious charges dismissed and one of them converted from a felony to a misdemeanor. I was able to stay out of jail and keep my job thanks to Jake. If you need an awesome attorney, call him. I wouldn't go anywhere else.

NOT RECOMMENDING CLARK LAW & ASSOCIATES! Jenny Clark was the partner in charge overseeing my lawyer, Caleb Dorrance. I initially was impressed, but come the time of Arbitration, I realized they didn't know my case well, confused it with others and then Caleb forgot to file witness paperwork so was not able to ask them questions, which lost that part of the case. He told me at the time, I had the right to file Bar complaint against him, it was a pretty big mistake. The owner of the firm was even worse professionally and made mistakes. JENNY JENNIFER CLARK... wow, so beyond unprofessional. Twice I got emails for other clients from her, one included the attached settlement! Other clients had similar names but not THAT close. After my lawyer left her firm a days after my case settled, and I still needed help getting the landlord to adhere to agreement, and sent email as directed before he left.... JENNY CLARK replied that case closed and they are no longer were my lawyer and provided Oregon Bar website link to find another. It was pretty awful, left me hanging. I replied how she was the senior partner on my case, sat in on my first appointment and said would be there. I was just needing the firm that represented me to make sure the other side does what they legally agreed. I ended that email with "Are you saying you won't do that?"... she replied alright...Can't attach here so SEE GOOGLE REVIEW ATTACHMENT of EMAIL FROM JENNY CLARK LOSING HER MIND. I get life was hard for her, but it was for me as well. That was why I hired them. THEY GOT $20K BUT WOULDN'T HELP ENFORCE THE AGREEMENT THEY NEGOTIATED. Do yourself a favor, keep searching for another firm. This one talks a good game but doesn't play well with others, especially the partner, JENNY CLARK.

I have only spoken once to Jennie Clark and I really don’t have an opinion about her. However, she has an associate named rick Davis in her office that is great. Very happy to have used Gregory Gudger for my recent divorce. These things are tough for everyone, and Greg stayed focused and was extremely helpful in helping me craft a fair, equitable, and compassionate settlement...for both parties. I know that my ex-spouse would also agree with this assessment. Even though it was a non-contested proceeding, there were still a lot of moving parts that had to be dealt with, and I wanted someone who would help me make the outcome fair for us both. My ex and I are still great friends, our new lives as seperate people are working out great, and I owe Gregory's sage advice a great deal of the credit for making this happen. Side note: My will also had to be re-written after the divorce, which I was able to sail through with Gregory's help. Done and done. I highly recommend Mr Gudger, if you're looking for a committed, fair, knowledgeable attorney who will listen generously and advise honestly!

Our family has relied on Mr. Gudger for most of our legal needs, from fighting housing related issues to creditor lawsuits. Mr. Gudger took on an old creditor that tried to take everything we own. He found a loophole had the lawsuit dismissed, saving us $100,000. The investment we made with Mr. Gudger was worth it. And, over the years, he has advised us with positive results. No lawyers are perfect, though some might think they are. Sometimes you have to pay to find out there's nothing you can really do. But, even that advise is valuable. I refer Mr. Gudger whenever I can and have recently sent two friends to consult with him. He's accessible, down to earth and is a fighter. I'll go into court with Mr. Gudger any day.

In the eleven month period of Mr. Gudger as my attorney I'm in the same place as I was at the beginning of my child custody case. Mr. Gudger was at first, for a couple of months in seemingly helpful, yet there were things that just didn't seem accurate that he was telling me around my case. He didn't seem to know my case, or my name even, until I was beginning to show frustration from me leaving voice mails when he was not in and it would take days to finally reach him. He did not provide me with monthly invoices for services rendered, instead it was a telephone call requesting more funds but to no explanation of what for. I personally felt no reassurance for the last six months of mr. Gudger as my attorney. He failed to provide, a note of leaving my case of any kind yet he insisted he was no longer my attorney. I came to him in hopes of some justice to my case . I am still scheduled in court in January with him as my attorney but to my surprise he let me go with not so much as a phone call, email or written statement. I also paid a deposit for a court session to mr. Gudger for a court appearance that never happened which he just kept, and now he doesn't respond to my phone calls or emails.

Never conferred with me during the whole trial. I have no idea what her defense strategy was but my wife and I carefully went through all of our police discovery laying out the accuser’s inconsistencies yet possibly only a tenth of it was brought up at trial. I went to prison for a long time. Scratching my head over the whole ugly business.

Lisa helped me years, 17 or so, ago. She was compassionate and cared about what was happening to me. Her work allowed me to escape from a life destroying mistake - one that harmed no one. Her name came up today in discussion with my wife, a discussion I most likely would not be having without her help, and I decided to give a little advice for people in need of help. Preparation, tenacity, compassion. Its a repeat of other reviews and there is a reason for that.

James told us he “forgot” to finish our case and encouraged us to sue his malpractice insurance. We hired another firm and now we found out the original case wasn’t forgotten but just not completed. If he had told the attorneys he worked with he had this case, they could have finished it for him. Then we wouldn’t have to be paying two attorneys! What a mess!

I had a very unique case that was dragged out for many years. "Not at Jacks fault" The government saw me as a hardened criminal for marketing fake sunglasses. Jack saw different. In the end Jack got me probation and home confinement so I could continue to work and raise my children. The Feds wanted me in prison for at least a year and a day" I have three friends that are attorneys so I'm very familiar with allot of law and how it works. I know the difference between a good and bad attorney. Jack is composed, controlled and when he strikes it's very decisive and distinct. I am very pleased with his performance and would gladly higher and refer him again.

He fought very hard for me and it showed. I would hire Ed Strand again. He believed in my innocence from the first time I talked with him. It was his attention to every little detail that I could give him and his many years as an attorney that impressed me. I learned my rights and how they had been violated. Edward is a very knowledgeable attorney and knowledge is power. Consulting him is essential in a terrible place like Oregon, he knows exactly how to approach each case and has a sincere passion to defend and he gave me a lot of hope in what was a completely illegal and staged Oregonian trial of which my civil rights were abused in the worst ways (Oregon-mostly idiots, charlatans, and arrogant bullies with obnoxiously disingenuous attitudes and arrogance that makes them a state that needs walls). Where as most prosecutors are simply bad people and their passion is to play into a clearly corrupt legal system, he knows it all and will get you out of their unfair game. I had also consulted a few other excellent attorneys in states like Texas and California who’s first comments were “we wouldn’t practice in that state,” their advice also being as helpful as Edward’s knowledge.

I hired Mr Leclaire for help on a dui case in 2013. While he seemed really helpful in the beginning, as the process continued he became less responsive and seemed less stable. He did not give me the relevant information needed to make an educated decision on chosing to go to trial and exaggerated his trial skills- as a result, I rejected diversion and took the case to trial. In the weeks leading up to the trial, I couldnt get ahold of him. At trial, he was woefully unprepared and had me testify without ever preparing me to take the stand. Midway through the trial, the judge pulled him into her chambers to ask if he was well enough to continue. He said he was. He should have been honest and said he wasnt Not surprisingly, we lost. He never followed up afterwards. Now that several years have passed, I see that he has been disciplined for client complaints that are much less than the mistakes he made with my case. I should have filed a complaint. He should never be allowed to practice law again.

If anyone is looking to hire a DUII attorney, I strongly would recommend Edward T LeClaire. Mr. LeClaire is a very knowledgeable guy. From the minute I contacted his office Tatiana his secretary was very nice and understanding. Not knowing what to do, they both gave me the information I needed and the confidence. Mr. LeClaire and Tatana were there every step of the way confirming all my court dates and keeping me up to date on all the information we had submit. Not once did he give up on my case. I am very blessed and lucky to have found him. With all his knowledge and experience we were able to win the case.

This attorney does not have the capacity to involve himself in significant casework of important matters that matter dearest to a client. Myself and another client of his were let down in the highest degree possible that any other established practicing attorney would laugh and shake their head at all the misdeeds he did. If you need will documents signed or small matters such as property disputes or tenant disputes, he might come through for you. You get what you pay for. If you want professionalism, please look somewhere else and save yourself the misery and stress this attorney out me through. It was by a pure miracle and luck i did not lose my case after I fired this incompetent attorney. After me and the other client filed complaints with the Oregon State Bar there was an investigation and determined he is unfit mentally to be an attorney. He was out on babysitting duty and any case he took was monitored by a supervising attorney. DO NOT HIRE ZACH SPIER. Awful work.

Zach is honest, fair, knowledgeable and supportive. The empathy he showed for my ridiculously controlling, nosy, and unethical Landlady was clear and genuine. The results he produced felt like a miracle after my trying to solve these issues for over a year and half on my own. He came into the picture and put my life back to the way it's supposed to be in no time at all. I can't thank him enough. The harassment has stopped, and we get to just live in our own home now, instead of under Landlady Hitler's rule!

It was a delight working with Mr. Kirk. He kept me updated with the progress in my case and whenever there were updates with the legal document he made sure I had a chance to review them to ensure my personal information was disclosed correctly. He kept me reassured we were making progress in my case and I entrusted him completely that we would arrive at a satisfactory result. I highly recommend Mr. Kirk for his legal service as he has great attention to his clients.

I hired David in February 2017 to manage a very difficult situation with my Dad who lived in Yamhill County at the time of his incident but for medical reasons we had to move him to Portland. David went out of his way to balance and mitigate the challenges of court appearances between Portland and McMinnville. He was professional at all times explaining the legal process, caring and understanding of our situation which was invaluable.

He represented me in a case that shouldn’t have made it to the grand jury, but needless to say they did indict me at which time I was placed in custody, Mr. Steen let the district attorney hold me passed my 60 days and didn’t raise that as an issue, during my stay in jail he continued to reassure me that I had nothing to worry about it was a slam dunk case, there were several other guys in custody that had Mr. Steen which I let him know that I knew he had a lot of cases on his desk from the public defenders office and I wouldn’t bother him, he reassured me once again, this time by saying and I quote, “ya, there are a few of you, but out of all of my guys in there, your the one that better not be losing any sleep over this because you are going home.” Which confirmed my belief in him and the fact that the charges would get beat in motions and I wouldn’t see a trial as I had stated to Mr. Steen from the very beginning that I wouldn’t sign a plea agreement or a waiver for my 60 days fast and speedy trial. At 60 days I was still in custody and on my 61st day I was in court, but not for what I had thought. I assumed a release hearing for violating my 60 days, or even a motion hearing which would have sufficed, but no he had me there to plea bargain which he had no flipped the script and claimed that i would most definitely lose in trial and get sent to prison for at least 56 months, my best bet is to take the plea and get a suspended sentence. This isn’t a personal attack on Mr. Steen, just stating the FACTS as they happened. Thank you, Robin

Extremely disappointed with how Dan has managed our estate case. It has been nearly two months since opposing counsel has requested to close the estate, but Dan continues to ignore any email from my wife or myself. The estate is not worth what he initially thought it would be, and he is no longer motivated to do the right thing by me or my deceased father. TRUST ME when I say a detailed review of this matter and Dans neglect will be posted to this site and sent to the Oregon Bar Association after the estate is settled.

Dan was initially referred to me 30 years ago and I saw him for a divorce and a couple of other matters along the way...then out of nowhere I was indicted on 10 felony counts arrested and humiliated ...so I called Dan who immediately took my case and went to work. One of Dan's biggest strengths is his personal integrity which hasn't gone unnoticed within the legal community. When he says something to a judge or other attorney then they listen and believe him...and rightly so. Dan took less money in order to hire an investigator that would prove to be the difference between winning and losing. I wasn't guilty which always makes it alittle easier but they had wound the net around me pretty good. Dan is an expert of working within the system to get things done. Ive sent him lots of clients throughout the years because I believe that strongly in this guy ...he saved my life because he is really good at what he does.

I hired Lawrence for my criminal case out of Washington County. At first things were OK. But at the end he was really unprofessional, even rude. Told me that If I didn't take the deal offered to me I was going to go to prison. Which wasn't true. He didn't really care about my concerns. He was impossible to get a hold of. Normally lawyers call you a couple days before court just to remind you, he didn't call me until the morning of, which was about 1.5 hours before I had to be in court. Thankfully i was already on my way otherwise i would have been late. And after my case was finished I contacted him asking for clarification on something and it's been 2 months and still haven't heard anything back. And it involves my fines being paid, so petty important. I wouldn't recommend spending your hard earned money here. I ended up getting free legal advice from Ryan Scott #1 criminal defense attorney in Oregon. Who had a seminar recently on subjects very related to my case. But Lawrence didn't attend. When I told Lawrence what Ryan told me too, he didn't handle it well, that's when he was the most unprofessional.. He ended up having to call Ryan to discuss what he told me. Unfortunately by then it was too late. And I was stuck in the deal he recommended. The deal I had only 10 min to decide if I should take it or not.

I wish Ernest was a stand-up person for African Americans in the community but I cannot say that. At least with my experience. We own a small business in Tigard Oregon and have been constantly harassed and intimidated by the local governmental jurisdictions. I record all instances with video and we are compiling documentation for a possible discrimination lawsuit in the future. I included Mr Warren on emails that we send out to the news media and local officials and had hopes of possibly retaining him in the future when the time was right but his lack of response to any of the multiple emails sent to his office clearly shows he's not interested. I will remove you from them emails next time I send one out. I am from an area where African Americans look out for other African Americans that area is Chicago Illinois, which is much much different than Portland Oregon. Sorry to see you were sold out by the man.

Mr Durham was completely uninterested in fighting for me in my criminal case. Almost hostile in his disinterest to the point that I became kind of intimidated to call. He was never available via phone and only returned one of many phone calls. He did not want to meet in person to discuss my case or develop a strategy on a felony case. He told me we could just discuss the details of the case over the phone and that coming in wasn’t necessary. Always was impatient sounding on the phone. He had no strategy to win the case and though he considered it ‘weak’, never once made me feel confident that I had a chance. Told me that I could look forward to two years of a drawn out case—or just get probation. Appalling experience. Beware.

If you've been denied a Public Defender or you are just looking for a decent attorney then I recommend Scott. He took the time to understand my situation and offer advice without charging me an arm and a leg. My previous experience with getting legal help was from a big law firm that ended-up charging me for every little thing. They didn't care about me and couldn't be bothered to explain anything without charging me extra. So it was shocking to me to find an attorney that didn't try to nickel and dime me for every little thing. He is the most laid-back attorney I've ever met, has a good sense of humor, and doesn't make you feel judged. Can't hurt to give him a call. Good luck!

Lucy demonstrated she is not capable of representing those who desire anything other than to throw themselves at the mercy of the court or are simply willing to settle for mediocrity about their representation. Lucy takes on FAR to large a caseload and in turn does not communicate proactively or effectively. She does not answer phone calls, she returns emails and texts when it appears she feels that she has no choice.  She does not follow reasonable client requests regarding providing discovery, exhibits, etc.  She only takes the time to communicate when she knows she has dropped the ball.  Her lack of initiative and professionalism cost me unnecessary time in jail, money, and more importantly frustration.  I am VERY calm and reasonable.  I understand professionalism and attempt to do the best job one can.  I essentially represented myself.  In the end, she provided nothing to my situation.  She added insult to injury by not following through with disputing Lake Oswego Municipal Court from billing me for her court-appointed attorney services.  Short of having a license with the bar I don't know what aptitude she brought to the table. I discourage anyone from placing their future in the counsel of Lucy.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
