If you are faced with a crime you feel you did not commit and the bulldog DA wants to offer you crazy long probation on a plea deal. You need Lisa she will calm you down and do everything she can to win your case in trial. She did amazing research almost 1000 pages of discovery. She was very well prepared and works very well with jury selection and prosecution witnesses. She is amazing do not use anybody else she is the best. Her right hand person Linnea is also awesome she is there the whole time keeping you calm. She has an entire team that works together to help win your case. Don’t be afraid and just take the state trying to scare you fight for your rights with Lisa and Linnea.

Never conferred with me during the whole trial. I have no idea what her defense strategy was but my wife and I carefully went through all of our police discovery laying out the accuser’s inconsistencies yet possibly only a tenth of it was brought up at trial. I went to prison for a long time. Scratching my head over the whole ugly business.

Lisa helped me years, 17 or so, ago. She was compassionate and cared about what was happening to me. Her work allowed me to escape from a life destroying mistake - one that harmed no one. Her name came up today in discussion with my wife, a discussion I most likely would not be having without her help, and I decided to give a little advice for people in need of help. Preparation, tenacity, compassion. Its a repeat of other reviews and there is a reason for that.

Brett Hall PC of Hall Law in Portland, Oregon is an excellent criminal lawyer who is also well versed in personal injury, family and even more so in DUII law. He is very knowledgeable in Oregon law and he is hard-charging, strategic and really cares about the people behind his cases that he represents. I've seen and heard examples of several of his cases and is someone I will always place my complete faith and trust in. His time consulting for me and my family regarding different matters in different areas of law have always been very helpful and I feel an excellent value, especially when looking at the potential saving that I was able to gain from his help, direction and wise words. Brett Hall is the lawyer you want in your corner fighting the good fight for you.

James told us he “forgot” to finish our case and encouraged us to sue his malpractice insurance. We hired another firm and now we found out the original case wasn’t forgotten but just not completed. If he had told the attorneys he worked with he had this case, they could have finished it for him. Then we wouldn’t have to be paying two attorneys! What a mess!

I had a very unique case that was dragged out for many years. "Not at Jacks fault" The government saw me as a hardened criminal for marketing fake sunglasses. Jack saw different. In the end Jack got me probation and home confinement so I could continue to work and raise my children. The Feds wanted me in prison for at least a year and a day" I have three friends that are attorneys so I'm very familiar with allot of law and how it works. I know the difference between a good and bad attorney. Jack is composed, controlled and when he strikes it's very decisive and distinct. I am very pleased with his performance and would gladly higher and refer him again.

I hired Ed Strand to defend me after being arrested on a controlled substance DUII to which I was NOT impaired. When I made my initial call to him he talked with me for 2 hours going over every detail of arrest. He was caring and very thorough. We won my case after 2 years waiting to go to trial. He fought very hard for me and it showed. I would hire Ed Strand again. He believed in my innocence from the first time I talked with him. It was his attention to every little detail that I could give him and his many years as an attorney that impressed me. I learned my rights and how they had been violated. This man is very special to me!! He gave my case full attention. He was always available to personally talk with me. I know that isn't the case with every attorney. I would hire him again without a second thought!!

My son got a DUI in Oregon and I live in Texas. This was very stressful for me since I could not be there to help him through this. Just by chance my son found the name of Ed Strand in the phone book, called him, and he gave me a call. He was so understanding and compassionate that I hired him. He became my lifeline to my son and his court procedures. He was able to get the Diversion Program and helped us through every step of the way. I was always able to get in touch with him which was very important to me. He certainly made this whole, highly stressful situation go smoothly and knowing he was there for my son was very comforting to me. I highly recommend Ed Strand.

Edward is a very knowledgeable attorney and knowledge is power. Consulting him is essential in a terrible place like Oregon, he knows exactly how to approach each case and has a sincere passion to defend and he gave me a lot of hope in what was a completely illegal and staged Oregonian trial of which my civil rights were abused in the worst ways (Oregon-mostly idiots, charlatans, and arrogant bullies with obnoxiously disingenuous attitudes and arrogance that makes them a state that needs walls). Where as most prosecutors are simply bad people and their passion is to play into a clearly corrupt legal system, he knows it all and will get you out of their unfair game. I had also consulted a few other excellent attorneys in states like Texas and California who’s first comments were “we wouldn’t practice in that state,” their advice also being as helpful as Edward’s knowledge.

I hired Mr Leclaire for help on a dui case in 2013. While he seemed really helpful in the beginning, as the process continued he became less responsive and seemed less stable. He did not give me the relevant information needed to make an educated decision on chosing to go to trial and exaggerated his trial skills- as a result, I rejected diversion and took the case to trial. In the weeks leading up to the trial, I couldnt get ahold of him. At trial, he was woefully unprepared and had me testify without ever preparing me to take the stand. Midway through the trial, the judge pulled him into her chambers to ask if he was well enough to continue. He said he was. He should have been honest and said he wasnt Not surprisingly, we lost. He never followed up afterwards. Now that several years have passed, I see that he has been disciplined for client complaints that are much less than the mistakes he made with my case. I should have filed a complaint. He should never be allowed to practice law again.

This attorney does not have the capacity to involve himself in significant casework of important matters that matter dearest to a client. Myself and another client of his were let down in the highest degree possible that any other established practicing attorney would laugh and shake their head at all the misdeeds he did. If you need will documents signed or small matters such as property disputes or tenant disputes, he might come through for you. You get what you pay for. If you want professionalism, please look somewhere else and save yourself the misery and stress this attorney out me through. It was by a pure miracle and luck i did not lose my case after I fired this incompetent attorney. After me and the other client filed complaints with the Oregon State Bar there was an investigation and determined he is unfit mentally to be an attorney. He was out on babysitting duty and any case he took was monitored by a supervising attorney. DO NOT HIRE ZACH SPIER. Awful work.

I wish Ernest was a stand-up person for African Americans in the community but I cannot say that. At least with my experience. We own a small business in Tigard Oregon and have been constantly harassed and intimidated by the local governmental jurisdictions. I record all instances with video and we are compiling documentation for a possible discrimination lawsuit in the future. I included Mr Warren on emails that we send out to the news media and local officials and had hopes of possibly retaining him in the future when the time was right but his lack of response to any of the multiple emails sent to his office clearly shows he's not interested. I will remove you from them emails next time I send one out. He represented me in a case that shouldn’t have made it to the grand jury, but needless to say they did indict me at which time I was placed in custody, Mr. Steen let the district attorney hold me passed my 60 days and didn’t raise that as an issue, during my stay in jail he continued to reassure me that I had nothing to worry about it was a slam dunk case, there were several other guys in custody that had Mr. Steen which I let him know that I knew he had a lot of cases on his desk from the public defenders office and I wouldn’t bother him, he reassured me once again, this time by saying and I quote, “ya, there are a few of you, but out of all of my guys in there, your the one that better not be losing any sleep over this because you are going home.” Which confirmed my belief in him and the fact that the charges would get beat in motions and I wouldn’t see a trial as I had stated to Mr. Steen from the very beginning that I wouldn’t sign a plea agreement or a waiver for my 60 days fast and speedy trial. At 60 days I was still in custody and on my 61st day I was in court, but not for what I had thought. I assumed a release hearing for violating my 60 days, or even a motion hearing which would have sufficed, but no he had me there to plea bargain which he had no flipped the script and claimed that i would most definitely lose in trial and get sent to prison for at least 56 months, my best bet is to take the plea and get a suspended sentence. This isn’t a personal attack on Mr. Steen, just stating the FACTS as they happened. Thank you, Robin

It has been nearly two months since opposing counsel has requested to close the estate, but Dan continues to ignore any email from my wife or myself. The estate is not worth what he initially thought it would be, and he is no longer motivated to do the right thing by me or my deceased father. Dan was initially referred to me 30 years ago and I saw him for a divorce and a couple of other matters along the way...then out of nowhere I was indicted on 10 felony counts arrested and humiliated ...so I called Dan who immediately took my case and went to work. One of Dan's biggest strengths is his personal integrity which hasn't gone unnoticed within the legal community. When he says something to a judge or other attorney then they listen and believe him...and rightly so. Dan took less money in order to hire an investigator that would prove to be the difference between winning and losing. I wasn't guilty which always makes it alittle easier but they had wound the net around me pretty good. Dan is an expert of working within the system to get things done. Ive sent him lots of clients throughout the years because I believe that strongly in this guy ...he saved my life because he is really good at what he does.

I hired Lawrence for my criminal case out of Washington County. At first things were OK. But at the end he was really unprofessional, even rude. Told me that If I didn't take the deal offered to me I was going to go to prison. Which wasn't true. He didn't really care about my concerns. He was impossible to get a hold of. Normally lawyers call you a couple days before court just to remind you, he didn't call me until the morning of, which was about 1.5 hours before I had to be in court. Thankfully i was already on my way otherwise i would have been late. And after my case was finished I contacted him asking for clarification on something and it's been 2 months and still haven't heard anything back. And it involves my fines being paid, so petty important. I wouldn't recommend spending your hard earned money here. I ended up getting free legal advice from Ryan Scott #1 criminal defense attorney in Oregon. Who had a seminar recently on subjects very related to my case. But Lawrence didn't attend. When I told Lawrence what Ryan told me too, he didn't handle it well, that's when he was the most unprofessional.. He ended up having to call Ryan to discuss what he told me. Unfortunately by then it was too late. And I was stuck in the deal he recommended. The deal I had only 10 min to decide if I should take it or not.

Mr Durham was completely uninterested in fighting for me in my criminal case. Almost hostile in his disinterest to the point that I became kind of intimidated to call. He was never available via phone and only returned one of many phone calls. He did not want to meet in person to discuss my case or develop a strategy on a felony case. He told me we could just discuss the details of the case over the phone and that coming in wasn’t necessary. Always was impatient sounding on the phone. He had no strategy to win the case and though he considered it ‘weak’, never once made me feel confident that I had a chance. Told me that I could look forward to two years of a drawn out case—or just get probation. Appalling experience. Beware.

If you've been denied a Public Defender or you are just looking for a decent attorney then I recommend Scott. He took the time to understand my situation and offer advice without charging me an arm and a leg. My previous experience with getting legal help was from a big law firm that ended-up charging me for every little thing. They didn't care about me and couldn't be bothered to explain anything without charging me extra. So it was shocking to me to find an attorney that didn't try to nickel and dime me for every little thing. He is the most laid-back attorney I've ever met, has a good sense of humor, and doesn't make you feel judged. Can't hurt to give him a call. Good luck!

Lucy demonstrated she is not capable of representing those who desire anything other than to throw themselves at the mercy of the court or are simply willing to settle for mediocrity about their representation. Lucy takes on FAR to large a caseload and in turn does not communicate proactively or effectively. She does not answer phone calls, she returns emails and texts when it appears she feels that she has no choice.  She does not follow reasonable client requests regarding providing discovery, exhibits, etc.  She only takes the time to communicate when she knows she has dropped the ball.  Her lack of initiative and professionalism cost me unnecessary time in jail, money, and more importantly frustration.  I am VERY calm and reasonable.  I understand professionalism and attempt to do the best job one can.  I essentially represented myself.  In the end, she provided nothing to my situation.  She added insult to injury by not following through with disputing Lake Oswego Municipal Court from billing me for her court-appointed attorney services.  Short of having a license with the bar I don't know what aptitude she brought to the table. I discourage anyone from placing their future in the counsel of Lucy.

As a first nation I struggle with identity and acceptance of the populations in the Americas in simply making jurisdictions in-laws to over substance substantiate what has happened in history in America does not negate any of the facts on how political framing exist I pray for every first nation in America and I pray that Lucy also heals from stating she had enough hearing about my ancestors for all court-appointed people in the biracial Community we are in a period where our ancestors are and will always be allowed to be discussed. I had to end the relationship a d engagement due to cultural reasons and hope her clients are happy yet in my 1st nation life, we talk soind act and are different. It was very clear in meeting face to face and speaking as a Native only western nows! Not in truth of Our boarding schools some acknowledgements must be done by those whom hold those same standards, that have covered up our peoples stories. I have ptsd anxiety and generational trauma. None of my emails were ever responded too, and I am sorry but our Ancestors abuse is handed down And taught. In reality I pray over understanding of this period in a non western conflict.

After long hours of work travel and caring for my elderly parents I returned to a restraining order and found myself without my home. I shopped around & scheduled meetings with 5 Lawyers. Ms. Runstein was the only one who told me that she will do her best to win/mitigate the accusations. Robin had a firm handshake and an On-Point attitude. She tackled the issue without hesitation and intended to resolve it within our first meeting. She presented me with all possibilities in a layered approach. Robin Runstein carefully planned against each allegation, and Beautifully executed in the court room. Needless to say, the Judge was convinced to reject the restraining order. I would HIGHLY recommend Robin Runstein to anyone looking for a Great Lawyer. I only wish her Father (Ted R.) could have seen her flawless performance.

Its hard to believe shes still in practice. This attorney does not return calls, does less than bare minimum for clients, and it seems as if she works with DA's office. After a year of "(defending)" my son, she has done NOTHING to defend him. Late or no show court appearances, outbursts of overwhelmed statements, and negative comments about her client, we are expecting a class action group of unsatisfied defendants (which wasn't hard), this lawyer has more violations in attorney misconduct than ever seen. Save yourself, do not retain her services, save your money and yourself.! Good Advice!

She had us into court rooms failing to inform us of important details, she was almost always late, she usually would not call us back till we called about 3 or 4 times! She was horrific. We would have saved ourselves alot of grief if we had just hired a different lawyer when we noticed she was out of her mind. I pray that Noone has to go through what we did with this lady. It's was awful!

It is my personal experience that when Lynne Dickison is appointed by the courts to represent a client as a Public Defender, you will receive the bare minimum representation allowed by law. Mrs Dickison's interests are aligned with the Assistant District Attorneys in criminal cases. I highly recommend paying her a large up front cash (or check/money order) retainer. From my personal experience, Mrs. Dickison makes no effort to earn the taxpayer dollars that she receives when she is appointed by the courts to act as a Public Defender. Make sure to get all paperwork related to your case, including work done and billable hours. Best of luck.

This lawyer should not be a lawyer. He is unprofessional, refuses to communicate, never gets back to his clients, doesn't return calls or emails, doesn't care about his clients and could care less. In a year period of representation he has spoken to me once. He files documents without permission and caused me to be falsley in prisoned. Run far away from this attorney and report him to the bar.

My experience with this defense was absolutely dissatisfying. I have witnesses and other clients who all saw him mis representing. He hangs up the phone walks away from you while talking. Doesnt answer questions. Never gave me progress reports. Never responded to letters. The list goes on and on. He mislead me on several occasions. Assigned me an aid and assist evaluation which was a complete waste of time. He was always making up excuses to not go to trial. He never gave me my full discovery. He never asked questions at trial that I wanted him to. He never used exculpatory evidence or subpeona any witnesses. I felt like he was the second prosecutor

He was all about the money and paying him alot of it. Sitting in court waiting he was working on other clients cases and charged me for the time. Never answered emails and was very condescending. After 7 months, 3 days before trial he gave me a letter saying he didnt want to represent me at trial. I scrambled and got a new attorney in the three days and he refused to release my file to my new attorney before I paid over $60,000. When I paid what we agreed to, he still refused to turn my file over saying he got a new bill for an additional $11,000 and refused to turn over my file till I paid that. This all three days before trial. I ended up paying him over $85,000 for basically nothing. My new attorney had to start from scratch. My new attorney was fantastic actually getting the case dismissed when Blackman told me plead guilty or face prison.

The bizarre thing was that I feared nothing was being done so I was offerring to help any way I could and I was assured that all research was being done, etc., to further my case. However, that did not seem to be the case when the case started and went on. After the first day Mr. Blackman asked if I wanted to go to the library to do research. Apparently he needed help. At that point I was too tired and distraught to work overnight. He should have asked earlier, but maybe he thought I would fire him. I may have. The case could have been settled, but Blackman made a big fight of it. He probably knew that if he asked earlier I would have fired him, so constantly assured me that everything that needed to be done was being done. However, obviously it was not. Also, I suppose every time he assured me he intended to "get around to it", but never did. In any case, mid trial I was being asked to figure my own case to help this so called attorney. WOW. That really blew me away. The attorney permitted the constant misstating of the law by the District Attorney and failed to object. It was as if he had not cracked a book to learn anything about the law. What a disaster it was. After the case was over I did crack those books and learned he had completely botched the case. It was simple research that a lawyer experienced, blah blah blah as Mr. Blackman claims to be could easily find in a few minutes, at most an hour, maybe a little more. He never took the time. He just bumbled into court all sure of himself with a factually innocent client. He also failed to make any efforts to prepare or go over testimony. Apparently he does NOT know how to do that, or research a case. He'll expect you to do all the work to get yourself off. During the litigation he was still trying to issue subpoenas and things which should have been done beforehand. He was unable to do so. He was too late. However, he also did not "fall on the sword" and tell the judge he needed a continuance and why (that he had not done his job). Apparently it is more important to Blackman to keep up appearances than to serve the interests of his clients. This lawyer is a disaster. If you want a lawyer who thinks he is better than other people, but too dumb to realize he's not really very smart at all this is your man. And he'll charge you a HUGE amount of money as well, and when you try to go away after he screws up your case and your life he'll sue you for 10s of thousands of dollars or more, all for the incompetent "work" he performs which you'd be better off doing yourself. Do yourself a favor and save the money and go with the public defender. If you don't qualify for the Public Defender then look for ANYBODY else. Probably most troubling is an element of bigotry in Blackman. He thinks he's superior to everybody else and though he was superior to the brand new DA opposing him. However, that brand new DA was able to effectively violate the law right and left with improper instructions, improper statements of what the law is not, and improper questioning and more including sheltering witnesses we needed from subpoenas. Blackman claimed the DA's actions were "unethical" but was unable to do a damn thing about them. If I wasn't paying the price for his incompetence, it would have been quite entertaining watching that brand new DA kick Blackman. There could be a movie about it. It might be pretty good. Worst of all, he still thinks he's better than everybody else even as he loses. He doesn't have a clue. But he's all about the money -- your money -- and he will sue you too even as he ruins your case and life by being so incompetent and lazy.

Do not go to this guy! If he's appointed to you, fire him! He comes across as "Do whatever dhs says if you want your kids back." What about dhs shouldn't have ever taken them?? What happened to defending your client?? It took me 8yrs fighting the injustice system. I finally got full custody just in time to find out my son had a brain tumor the size of an orange on his brainstem & was close to death. Ya this "lawyer" was the first mistake. Hiring one of his parters, mistake #2. Good luck out there!!

May 2010 excerpt from letter to MPD You had ten months to prepare a case to win on my false arrest for criminal trespass. It was clear from what happened in court that I wasn't worth the effort to win ..." Kasi thought I was guilty of the charges, she said " did you do it?" She came to court and didn't know the names of any of the witnesses, or even what happened. There was a long period where all they talked about was the garden hose. She made no effort on my behalf.. She was cold, unprepared and "dumptrucked" I had never been arrested before, was locked out of my apartment for good, was homeless and spent almost two years on bench probation because a slum lord went after me for being assertive about cleaning up mold on the property. Kasia didn't even know the name of the property manager that was behind my arrest. She failed me so completely, I would have done a better job.

Amanda will tell you she's a "damn good lawyer" (more than once). She's not interested in information, or answering questions- she has one goal and one focus- and that is to win. I suppose this is a good trait in a lawyer, as long as you can stomach her arrogance and rude behavior. She does not like to answer questions and the many assistants who come and go often lose paperwork or have no idea what is going on with your case. Be prepared to gather EVERYTHING and I mean EVERYTHING from your doctors, care providers, and case workers. Also, make sure you make a LOT of copies, because this law firm can't seem to retain the documents you will be providing. We delivered numerous documents by mail, certified mail and even in person. We went over the file page by page- in person and the night before the hearing, an assistant claimed they did not have the key doctor's contact information. Not only was this not true, it caused an enormous amount of stress, not to mention the cost of paying the doctor who ultimately was not allowed to testify, as the law firm didn't acquire the proper permission for her to attend, even though they had previously assured us they would. We caught them in several lies about our attorney's availability and what documents they had. I work in the adult court system- I have some understanding of proceedings and I've worked closely with attorneys most of my career. I have never been spoken to or treated so rudely as we were in this law office. I'm sorry to say it was too late to fire her and start over. While I feel we may still be able to win the case, I don't feel like this attorney's office has been any help in the prep process- in fact they have been an outright hindrance at times. For the amount of money they are going to walk away with, they really ought to be more respectful of their clients. If you only care about winning and don't mind being uninformed and treated like you're stupid- and if you don't mind doing all the legwork and building your own case and repeatedly sending them documents- then this just might be the law firm/lawyer for you.

I hired Lissa to assist me with a very painful divorce promoted by domestic violence. I wanted a female attorney and thought that Lissa would be an important advocate. I spent almost $50,000 on lawyer fees just for her to drop me as a client a month before our court hearing, in the middle of summer when no one was available to step in and take over. She offered no reason for the sudden drop and I ended up Iosing over $200,000 because I was left without a trial lawyer at the eleventh hour after paying her for nearly a year. During our time together, Lissa was unprofessional, woefully underprepared for our temporary court hearing, had no eye for detail and had a very short temper. Every document I received from her was chalk full of mistakes, she would frequently lose her temper and start yelling at me and her staff, and arrived to our temporary court hearing with little preparation. She appears to take on far too many clients at once, leaving her stressed, over worked and underprepared to deliver results. But she'll certainly take your money. Lissa Kaufman was the absolute biggest mistake I made during my divorce. I hope others chose more wisely.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
