My partner and I worked with Attorney Johnson on our adoption case. The whole process went so smoothly thanks to Attoeney Johnson. She took care of everything and we knew she would always keep our best interests at the forefront. I appreciate how easy Attorney Johnson is to talk to and relate to, but also exceptionally professional. I'd recommend her to anyone who needs an attorney.

$3,500 dollars down the drain from a lack of communication, false promises, and excuses of why it took 4.5 months to write a motion/petition to modify parental allocation which oddly referred to me as the mother (she/her) in the language. I switched counsel because of no movement and had $200 left from my retainer which was never reimbursed even after calling the firm’s office asking for payment. Moreover, she was unprepared for court and got talked over by the other party’s lawyer. I got the results I was looking for elsewhere.

I concur with the reviews that say lack of communication and they waste your time.

Lucinda was a lawyer on my family case for awhile. While meeting with her multiple times, she couldn’t remember things such as certain things about my case I NEEDED. Won’t answer phone calls or communicate with you unless it’s to get paid. She made me late for my last court appearance, did not give me any info and did not show up on top of that, and then told me she was backing out of my case and is not employed at her old law office. Instead of communicating with me, sending me everything she has on my case, finding my other lawyers or giving me some sort of refund, she has chose to constantly ignore me which has delayed the results of my case. She will talk intelligently to real you in but please get multiple opinions. I wasted money on something I could have easily done myself with the help of the court librarian. This is the same lady that would be getting ready for my court date in her office. Professionalism in this type of industry is a must and you won’t find it here. Spend the money to get a consultation from somewhere else and get multiple opinions. Lucinda, I am still very upset at how inappropriately you handled my court case, and have given you multiple chances to fix your wrongs, I hope others see this post and hear my warning do not go with her!

Spoke to Pam. She took no steps in even wanting to understand the situation before telling me within 45 seconds of the phone conversation that she needs $500 to have a 10 minute phone conversation about our situation. I just needed to know if it’s a case their firm would take or not, but apparently you have to pay these guys $500 to get a no for an answer.

If you read any reviews before you hire this law firm, please take the time to read this one! I so desperately wish I had instead of just trusting a close contact referral. I had hired Anne Vecchio in March of 2021. It is February 2022 now as I write this. Back in March of 2021 she had helped me to file for full custody of my son. It was a straight forward case, I just wanted a parenting agreement in writing, as well as obtain child support. Over the summer we worked on getting the parenting plan straightened out, something the father and I worked on together with her advice of how to word some things. This was finalized in October of 2021. I also had completed my financial affidavit back in August of 2021 and sent that to the law firm. She then told me she never received these items. Fortunately I had made copies before I mailed them. I made copies again, and sent them certified mail this time in October 2021. Starting in November 2021, she had both parties financials, as well as the signed and initialed parenting plan. In November she continued the case in court, same for December and January. I never received an answer as to why. At this point TOO much money had been spent and I was getting frustrated that such a straight forward case had been continued so many times, when we had the papers done and finalized by October 2021. Mind you, every month another statement would come between $100-$300 when basically nothing had been worked on. Finally in January of 2022, I had fired Anne as my lawyer and she filed to come off the case. At our court date on 02/10/2022 the judge acknowledged her coming off the case as my attorney, and I went to file my motion to appear without counsel going forward, as well as submit the financial affidavits of BOTH parties. Something that should have been done by Anne back in November of 2021. When I was filing, I asked if the parenting plan had been submitted (which she said it had been 10 minutes prior in front of the judge).. and to no surprise, no record of our parenting plan was in the court system. So I filed that myself as well. It's also not a good look when the woman behind the window asked who my attorney had been, and the look in her eyes when I named Anne Vecchio. Basically, if you want to waste thousands of dollars, and get your court cases continued over and over... go with this law office. As a single mother when I originally filed, I am very disappointed of how I was taken advantage of by this law firm.

Very disappointed in the service I received from Anne. I didn't not feel she represented my wishes and myself well at all. I felt like this was all a big game to her and I lost my custody because of her inadequate knowledge and care for my case.

I've used a lot of Attorneys in the past and I'm not sure how she passed the bar exam. When I did have a court case she would show up late and very disorganized. I fired her after a few months and hired an attorney who could navigate through the court system without going to her other partners for advice. Now that the " sister in law" are out on their own because daddy pays for everything I really hope people start to read these reviews and go elsewhere. I hate to see people who work hard for themselves get taken by these two who were raised with a silver spoon in their mouths.

Christine has been great!!! She has always done what she said she would do. She has helped me with 4 separate issues in family court. She helped me win a custody battle as well as several other issues that have come up. I really appreciate the fact that she doesn't sugar coat she sets realistic expectations. My ex wife has been difficult to say the least and Christine has come through every time!!!!

Do not hire this lawyer! She quoted a price for a simple divorce and after months of no communication with several calls made and messages left, I received a bill for twice the amount quoted - and it had an over 90 days late stamp on it. I was expecting money back and instead I get a bill for additional money. A lawyer should know what costs will be associated with what services. I was totally mislead. Not to mention her assistant never called back, knew we were expecting money back and never said anything to the contrary! DON'T HIRE!!

i hired Christine Taylor for a divorce and child custody case. She didn't even tell me that my divorce had been completed until two weeks after it was final. She wanted me to cave in to my exes lawyer on everything to end the process quicker. she was unwilling to take instructions and let personal feelings get in the way of my defense. I should have never been on the defense, my ex is the one who left her family for money and security. she had made a payment agreement that I was fulfilling. then decided because of something she assumed decided to make up the payment rules at a whim. even though we had a legal binding agreement. VERY BAD LAWYER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
