He will do whatever he needs to to do help himself. Lets just leave it at that. He will lead you on and tell you what you wan to hear. When it comes down to actually doing what he said he will do it's a different story.

I had the misfortune of hiring this firm in 2020 to handle a VA Disability Appeal. Year after year, till yesterday, they did absolutely nothing. Weren't even sure if any records release went to the '2' facilities I was treated at. Totally not ready for my hearing which they postponed to 'get ready' (hahhahahahahhahaa!) Yeah.. Anyway, they blew it. They performed no work, didn't get records because guess what?? Records don't just muster on station at their office without VALID AND CONTEMPORANEOUS requests, which didn't happen. 3 years of time wasted. They self ejected because they knew they were in way way above their heads and couldn't perform because they didn't even request records. Had I researched them I would never have hired them. IF you want your case to go nowhere, hire these guys! It'll grow MOSS!!!!! note: Just because a person 'served' in a branch of military, does NOT necessarily mean they have your back...or are equipped to do the work. I should have asked what their MOS' were!!!

I hired Virgil, thinking that his slightly lower price was a bargain. My sons are only nine months old and two years old, so I thought that he would appreciate the importance of protecting them. Not only did he rarely respond to my calls and emails, he rarely took any real action on my case. I wrote him emails, begging for his help in getting my sons the help they needed, and often times his only response was to charge me 50 or 100 dollars to read the email. Granted, he *sometimes* sent a response. But he never followed up with any real action. I suspect that some of the five-star ratings on here are fraudulent. Virgil got poor results. He had almost no sense of urgency. He seemed to care very little about my young sons and I. Do not hire this attorney if you take your case seriously.

I was hit by a car who failed to see me on the road. I was injured and needed treatment. I retained Virgil Royer and they got me help with my car and also with my medical treatment. I received a very fair settlement with the at-fault driver's insurance company. I would highly recommend Virgil Royer to anyone who was in a car accident caused by someone else.

I hired Mr. Royer for a family law matter, while my case was fairly straightforward, I am very impressed with how quickly the entire process went. I got the results I was hoping for and then some; in 12 years (my Son's entire life), I've never received a penny of support from his Father and now we are actually getting regular support! I never thought I'd see the day. Mr. Royer is also very professional, which I appreciate very much. (I've worked with Attorney's who are far from it and trust me, that makes a difference to the Courts, especially the judge) I highly recommend Mr. Royer and his team if you need something handled right the first time.

At first I thought it would be just another court appointed lawyer that doesn't care for the people but only cares about how fast they can get a case over. But it wasn't that at all. She listened she worked she keep in contact and keep me informed constantly. My experience that lead me meeting her I wouldn't go through again but im glad she was appointed to me. Thanks again.

He messed up on filing for a vehicle accident claim. So he told us we had to sue his malpractice. It has been an absolute nightmare. They are trying to only offer us a fraction of what he was going for and trying to get us to appear in person or get it dismissed. They are taking advantage of the fact that we are out of state according to our new attorney. And he doesn't have a lot of nice things to say about who's representing you. Robert, this will stay here until you contact your malpractice and tell them to get their stuff in order and next is the BAR. YOU'RE MALPRACTICE INSURANCE IS ONLY TRYING TO GIVE US ENOUGH MONEY TO PAY OUR MEDICAL BILL AND THAT IS IT. Maybe I'll sue you for making us having to deal with your malpractice like this. I didn't expect them to be snaky and tried to con you. I had a better offer from the insurance company to begin with.

From beginning to end this lawfirm has exceeded my expectations. They were on top of everything and gave me results that by far made the reasonable attorney fees seem like one of the best investments I could make for my time and family. I appreciate everything Mr. Montgomery has done and the time and care taken to make sure my questions and concerns were addressed and made the experience as smooth as one could hipe for. So very grateful, thank you Gilroy Napoli Short so very much!!

Both Robert and Jason have been helpful from the beginning. Right when I walked into their office, I felt I was being taken care of and was in good hands. I was more than in good hands. They made me feel at ease in these moments I was at a low point. They reassured me that things were going to be ok and they would take care of me. And they did 100%. They listened to me and understood my situation. They made sure that I was not left in the dark and explained every question I had. They were quick to respond to my phone calls or emails. Usually the same day. I would highly recommend this firm to any one in need of their expert feild of experience. Choosing this group is a guarantee success to your path for a better future.

I asked Shannon Douglas if she was familiar working with people that have disability and trouble with communication skill, she said she did. I had an apt with Shannon and when I arrived, she asked me to do an evaluation, at that time in the office, the eval took 3 hours. It was not scheduled or mentioned to me in advance. I was not ready or prepared for a long appointment and had not eaten. The eval did not go well and I had to leave in the middle of it and agreed to finish it at another time. I later asked when I can schedule it, and was told I did not have to. Shannon put in her notice in early November to leave the public defenders office. She took my file with her, did not leave forwarding contact information. I searched, she finally contacted the BAR on 1/3/201, I got her information from the the Bar, called her 1/6/2021 to ask her about her behavior and how it put me at risk, I asked her to resign and I would not report her. She lied, abandoned her client, gave all my belongings (keys, money, computer, hard drive, and evidence to the person I have an active court case against, therefore compromising the case. Shannon reported to the courts that I was not cooperating, and that got me arrested, and then put in the OSH for evaluation and while I was in there, I was attacked and beaten 2 times, my house was robbed, my spouse was attacked. I have never in my life encountered such a poor excuse and follow through with someone that is my representation. I then got an attorney that knows how to take care of me. My case is a no brainer. Shannon cost me not only time, reputation, loss of belonging, risk mine and my husbands safety. Do not work with this train wreck of irresponsible ethics.

When I got in trouble for DV, she didn't listen to my story, she pressured me first time I saw her to plea out with out listening to what happen, and basically told me I couldn't win in court on self defense because I was male. She pretends to be a good public defendant but is not. If she ends up being you public pretender you should get someone else.

I used this attorney and made it very clear that we were to go to trial as fast as possible. She delayed trial TWICE without consulting me and said that what I wanted did not matter to her. I told her that she had an obligation to keep me informed. She then decided to quit my case. I would NOT recommend this attorney to anyone. It turned out that she also revealed information to the other side that harmed my case. She said that it was a "courtesy". I don't know where she went to school or where she learned ethics, but I think she should stop the career.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
