5 stars is not doing this firm justice! Kevin Anderson has been absolutely outstanding! He went above and beyond my expectations. He treated me like a high-end clientele and used verbiage that made me feel competent. I can’t thank Kevin enough for his customer service and I will 100% be returning to this firm for all my future needs.

I love how Michael thinks! He comes up with creative solutions, seeing ways around problems and finding solutions. In writing real estate contracts he is able to think of all the "outs" we need for due diligence. He's responsive and makes time for you. His understanding of real estate is vast and he's truly an expert at his craft. Thanks Michael!

Mr. Paul saved my life and my career in Unit States by helping me to fighting with my case, Since my girlfriend and I are both very emotional, we had a minor argument while driving and ended up being involved with the police because of some conflicts. However, due to some misunderstandings, the police arrested me and defined it as domestic violence. This was a shame for me and I stayed in jail for a night. Finally, since I was not familiar with Salt Lake City, I randomly made a few calls to local law firms. Finally, Mr. Paul was very patient in helping me and my girlfriend what to do when he received my call for the first time. In the end, the case was dismissed, and he used the shortest time to do more efficient things. And when he has time, he will teach me like an elder.

Absolutely horrible to work with! I wouldn't recommend her to anyone! Charged me $10,000 for a simple fill in the blank protective order document that was only supposed to take just a couple hours to fill out. She filed this document with false information despite me asking her to fix the mistakes. She was belittling and bullying to me throughout the couple weeks I tried to use her. It was so bad that I told her that I was thinking of using someone else for my divorce, and she got upset and dropped me for the protective order case which I had a hearing for just a couple weeks later. I had to quickly try to scramble to find a new lawyer and ultimately lost my protective order after having to spend even more money to try to get a new lawyer up to speed and to try to fix her many mistakes. Absolutely a nightmare of an experience! Do NOT use her!

If you're at the beginning of your divorce process you're probably a little scared and looking for someone who can give you advice and who you can trust. At first Emily seemed like she was exactly that and during my free consultation with her she came across as someone who would fight for me and protect me. I hired her thinking she was a high powered attorney that would get the job done, but in the end all she ended up being for me was a high priced attorney who cared more about getting paid than protecting my best interests. With only an 18 month marriage and a full pre-nup in place I should have had a slam dunk case, but Emily consistently dropped the ball and got caught off guard by my ex-wife's pro-bono freshman lawyer's antics and it cost me dearly. Emily's response to me everytime I'd get screwed was "well it could be worse" and she'd quote some other case she was working on that was a lot costlier. I never felt like she was in control or knew what she was doing, her communication was spotty, and she was constantly charging me to fix her blunders. Ultimately I felt like she didn't really care about me as a client and had more important things to worry about. With that said, I gave her a couple of stars because I guess she could have been worse.

Emily strongly represented my interests and the interests of my minor child and even, ultimately, those of my young adult children. She listened to my goals, worked in accord with my ambitious timeline to dissolve the marriage and applied both her legal skills and social perceptiveness to critically examine the unique circumstances and identify weak spots in legal strategies. While no one could fully anticipate what the other side would do, Emily’s impeccable judgement, focus and professionalism reinforced my bargaining position and delivered a swift settlement that was better than expected.

I contacted the Ault Firm at the beginning of my divorce. I had already filed papers on my own and they reviewed them for me during our free consultation. They suggested I simply continue on that track, because I was doing well enough...But to call them if I needed them. When I got cornered by the opposing party's legal counsel, Chris stepped in and handled my divorce case most professionally and with great courtesy. We had a brief court appearance, and the outcome, though divorce is never the desirable outcome, was the best that it could be. I highly recommend Ault Legal.

Words cannot begin to describe my gratitude for your genuine kindness, your sincerity in the work and professional service you provide, and the opportunities granted to those affected by it. You bring the haunting to an end while opening doors that have been shut for decades. And all the while you do it at a price point that creates a value so great it simply can't be beat. Rasa legal knows their business well, carrying themselves with the utmost integrity. More importantly, they take the time to understand the people they serve each and every day! Again, thank you for helping me to achieve the outcome I desired, the respectful manner in which you treated me, and the level of professional conduct displayed by every member of your staff. It's easy to see why your firm carries a 5-star rating.

I went through the worst experience of my life and Cory Wall was there every step of the way. He helped me through a terribly vicious and excruciating divorce to the extent I will not discuss here, but involved criminal courts, family courts, lawsuits, evaluators, trial and so much more. It would be safe to that Cory is an honorable attorney and an honorable human. Over several years time we corresponded through thousands (no exaggeration) of emails, dozens of hearings and long nights where we both emailed back and forth to get the job done to prep for court. He was respectful and sensitive to the demeaning and dehumanizing situation I was in for the divorce. He was strategic, he was kind where I needed to see humanity and he was striking in court when I needed him to be. Thank you Cory for putting up with my terrible case. Thank you Cory for being the guiding light when I needed one. Thank you for standing up for what was right. Thank you for having so much integrity. I will continue to refer people to your services.

Walter represented me in a medical malpractice case. My wife and I immediately felt good about him. He was always professional and polite. He was really good about educating us on the situation and explaining things for us in a way that didn't feel condescending at all. We settled the case before we went to trial and felt very good about everything Walter was able to do for us. We felt like he cared, and just overall was a very nice, genuine guy who was there to help us in matters we were not capable of doing ourselves. Walter called when he had questions about details to make sure he had it right, so he could be as prepared as possible. He worked very hard on my case and was very well educated in his field. I always felt 100% confident in him and I feel very thankful to him and the DKOW firm.

I paid her retainer fee, which wasn’t cheap. Never saw or heard from her again. She pawned me off at the last minute to one of her trainees, who knew nothing about my case on my court date. Then, when the sentencing day came, nobody showed up. I ended up using a public defender after all was said and done because I couldn’t get in contact with anyone from her office. Be wary.

Josie Brumfield is a knight in shining armor, though not the typical kind. Did you know that if a prosecutor breaks the law... commits "prosecutorial misconduct," that they expect to get away with it? Any lawyer who calls them out will have goodies withheld from them! They won't get good deals, their other clients will be punished and they will lose the "goodwill" of the prosecutor. I didn't know that, but Josie did. She still went and risked her future options for me and told the truth. My ex wife's powerful family from the FLDS cult tried to get me out of the way after my kids (who I have custody of) inherited some money. They were willing to lie (very well! Tears and folksy sayings and everything) and they got the poor prosecutor to believe them. In fact, he became willing to toss aside ethics (cause he thought I would be stuck with a public defender) and help my ex's family make up whole new stories. The judge just sat there. Josie's courage and knowledge of how things really work (it is NOT always fair, the system is NOT always just), to buy me almost 5 extra years to raise money for my defense and help my kids prepare if I get railroaded. If you want someone who is not part of the old boys club, who doesn't play golf with the prosecutor and judge, and who doesn't think of your case as one card in her hand of clients... and whose instincts about how the system really works just might save your bacon, then look no further. She was extremely reasonable 5 years ago, I expect her reputation has grown but she is worth every cent you will pay. Since I'm still under the gun I sign this anonymously, with regret.

In 2018, I divorced my husband. The attorney messed up the paperwork, and I found that I had a mess on my hands. I hired Mr. Nemelka in 2020 to untangle things, and he did a fabulous job. My concerns were listened to and addressed. His advice was clear and spoke of years of experience. He was responsive, honest, and on top of everything. Things were taken care of with the court, and that was that... I thought. This year, I found myself needing a lawyer again due to reopened proceedings by my former husband. I again called Nemelka Law, and it has been resolved quickly and with minimal fuss. I would hire Steve again in a minute!

3.5 STAR REVIEW OF CHAD STEUR LAW Chad regularly lies and tramples the rules--which might be fine to you, if you benefit from his cheating. He is an impetuous attack dog who cares about his clients and fights hard for them. He is what people, myself included, look for in a litigator. While most attorneys are averse to conflict, Chad is not. Moreover, Chad is not greedy like many attorneys. Then why not a five-star review, you say? Chad's problem is that he lacks wisdom. He fights--and usually wins--legal battles that might ultimately, and unwittingly, lead to your losing the war. Though I recommend Chad, he is like nitroglycerine; so I suggest you consult a second attorney before you let Chad loose. (The above is my opinion as a lay person based on my dealings with Chad Steur. I do not present it as a statement of irrefutable fact.)

Our car got impounded because we got pulled over for no reason in Wyoming. The police asked if we had money in the car and we said yes because we had some Target gift cards. They told us get out while they search our car. Next they brought in a police dog who sniffed all over the car and found a pair of scissors in the trunk. They said they had been used to cut marijuana. We are old Chinese people that have absolutely nothing to do with drugs. They impounded the car and took us to a local hotel. The sheriff himself took us to one and dropped us off. We had to get our family to drive from California to come get us. Now, after 2 years of making car payments this dirt bag lawyer and his investigator who are all good buds with the local courts agreed to keep our brand new car we had just bought. When we talked to this scumbag (look at his picture and you can tell) he lied and promised how he would get our car back. After spending $10,000 over the last two years we got nothing!!!

This case went on for well over a year with Wyoming Attorney. I fired him hired Ed Wall ( who practices in UT and WY). He came into case had it taking care of in a matter of oh.... 6 months. Reduced to one misdemeanor I ended up with 6 mo. Court probation and small fine and had to talk with a drug and alcohol counselor of my choice. Thank You Ed I really appreciate what you did for me. Ladies, if you are getting divorced, this is the place you want to go, specifically Bart Johnson's team. Bart in particular will comfort and console you and even take you to his home in the avenues and sleep with you. Pictures of him and his clients have been taken exiting and kissing outside of his home, he prefers women of authority, like a doctor or a principal at a school as examples. If you want them to win a case for you however, that is where they lack. They file a lot, but don't succeed in much other than waste your money but at least you get screwed in more ways than one.

I engaged John Snow to represent me in March of 2023 with the only request being to remove a Trustee who had embezzled millions of dollars from a family Trust. The issue with it was that it implicates Kirton McConkie in the fraud so I made certain Parsons Behle had no problem going after “The Lords Lawyers” to which John responded “of course not” On April 14th 2013 he issued a letter to KMC law requesting answers to various questions but in the end has nothing to do with removing the Trustee. KMC Law refused to respond and John brought in Angus Edwards and Mindy Kids to assist. On June 7th or almost two months later Mr Edwards sent the exact letter knowing there would be no response.. August 9th 2023 the three attorneys filed an unrelated derivative claim against my siblings but did confirm the KMC fraud within the body; but just refused to add KMC as a defendant in this $100M estate case. August 18th The attorneys filed amended complaint forgetting to add the summons. They refiled three weeks later on Sept 12th but forgot to verify the complaint. Oct 3rd; I complained to John Snow via emails to which he responded “I do not have the time to read or respond to your questions and we are “done”! I paid approx $75k in fees and accruals to have a trustee removed and instead I was dropped the day before the hearing in which I was forced to go pro se against KMC who Judge Faust let off with a false Jurisdiction issue. He wasted 7 months of my life; took all of my money; and left me with no representation to face the law firm who refuses to account for my parents $100m estate which has been embezzled by my sister and Craig McCullough through “The Old Switcheroo”… Please review case# 230905835 wherein John Snow states Mr McCullough KMC Law has a Professional Conflict of interest and everything the law firm did should be “void” When asked why he refused to go after KMC Law and stand behind his words; he responded “just because I said it does not mean it is true”. All that Parsons and the three attorneys needed to say last March is “sorry; we have a conflict of interest”. But chose instead to breach their fiduciary duty to me and my daughters in favor of apparently keeping their fiduciary duty to the most prestigious religiously affiliated law firm in Utah.. I’m speechless as to how cold hearted and ruthless these attorneys are I’ve been dealing with for four years while being prohibited to see my own dad who is still alive and abandoned by KMC Law who he paid hundreds of thousands in fees to have them protect him; and not my sister Lisa Stephens and her husband Bryan..

Greed is a terrible curse..

Called multiple times to get assistance with a case. No reply back. Their automated message kept insisting I use their online consultation form so I filled that out and got an email that basically stated my case doesn't fit their criteria even though they advertise in practicing in the exact type of law that I need. Sucks to hear since they were referred to me. I still haven’t talked to a human at their office so they can hear my story.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
