Jonathan Dunn was very instrumental in my defense case. There is no other defense attorney that I would recommend after dealing with Jonathan. I was facing two misdemeanor charges and with Jonathan's help, defeated both towards dismissal in a county where dismissals are rarely encountered.

I was referred to Jonathan by a family member, and may I say, the services he provided me for my traffic incident was beyond what I could have expected. Jonathan was there to answer any and all of my questions—and I had many. He took me through everything up to the court date, and was there for me that very morning. I could not ask for a better and more loyal attorney. Highly recommended—you will be in a better and less stressed mindset if you reach out to Jonathan.

Jonathan Dunn truly cares about his clients and knows the best options and strategies to achieve the best possible outcome. He is patient and willing to take the time necessary to pursue the right course of action. I had peace of mind throughout our case knowing that Jonathan was on our side and working with our best interest in mind. He is highly recommended.

I was to appear in court October 1 for a misdemeanor. Richard Darden told me not to. He charged 4 thousand dollars upfront for his work on 2 soperate cases. After receiving the 4 thousand dollars, he claimed to have struck a "deal" with the state soliciter for $1,673.00 to finalize the case. I sent him the check, he cashed it. There is still a warrant out for my arrest for failing to appear in court. My probation officer, the state clerk, and the state solicitor are all unaware of this deal and have not heard from Richard Darden. I cannot contact him. He has not return a single phone call or email. I plan to do everything in my power to get my money back and, furthermore, to sue this firm for negligence.

Zero proactive communication. If I was wanting to know what was going on with the case then I had to reach out and wait days for a reply. Usually had to follow up again on the topic before getting a response. I felt as though I was treated like Mr. Darden was doing me a favor by handling my case, not as though he had been paid thousands of dollars to do the job. After 12 months of dealing with the case it was FINALLY resolved. This would not be an issue if I had not been misled into thinking it would take - at max - half of that time. I went back and forth with him on several issues which he clearly was not fully informed on or could care less into finding out proper information which dragged the process out. AT MINIMUM I should have gotten half of my money back since I did at least half his work. When I reached out to express my frustrations, I got no response. Nothing! Since the case is closed what does he care. Saddest part, he was referred by a family friend. There are still unresolved issues in which I should be receiving his assistance or at least guidance. You can bet I will be handling those alone. If I had to do it all again, I would have certainly gone with a different option.

Mr. Bateski represented me back in 2008 before I knew of this website. It was a serious matter. My dad had a friend who recommended Mr. Bateski We had a few meetings discussing the case and law. My situation was explained to me. I was left to make my own choices. He stated that he had to be prepared to go to trial regardless of what happens during the hearings. He was competent in court. He represented me and protected my rights in court and phone calls with the judge and DA. Ultimately, my case was not prosecuted so we never started a trial and I cannot comment on his work in trial. This other reviewer talking about anxiety is not like what I remember. I would not call him the worst lawyer as that reviewer did. Since we didn't go to trial he refunded most of his retainer. His retainer was very reasonable in the first place. I think he charged much less than other lawyers would've charged.

I received a speeding citation 2 years ago in GA while driving from FL back home to NC. Without knowing all my rights I paid the fine because I was out of state. About 3 months later I was sent a second fine for the same ticket (super speeder fine). Again, I was out of state and unfortunately just paid the ticket. Then GA finally got around to notifying my home state about the citation almost two years after the fact and they sent me a notice that my drivers license was being revoked for 6 mths. Mr. Bateski advised me very well and worked with the court in GA on my behalf. Ultimately, Mr. Bateski got the original citation vacated in GA, which saved my license in NC. I am so grateful for his dedication, speed with handling my case and responsiveness. I hope to never need an attorney again, but if I do he will be the one!

MR. BATESKI IS THE WORST LAWYER TO GET. ALTHOUGH HE IS CHEAP, HE HAS ANXIETY ISSUES AND GETS VERY NERVOUS WHEN IN COURT. I HAD A SIMPLE CITY ORDINANCE AND BEFORE I COULD EVEN SAY ANYTHING HE HAD ALREADY AGREED TO TAKE A PLEA THAT WOULD HAVE RUINED MY CAREER. HE THEN WENT ON TO GIVE ME BACK MY MONEY BEFORE I HAD TO GET STERN AND ALMOST MOTIVATE HIM TO DO HIS JOB! I EVEN HAD TO TELL HIM TO SAY WHEN TALKING WITH THE JUDGE...PATHETIC!

This lawyer lacks understanding of the family court system. His history is in criminal law. In order to handle my case he had to consult with other lawyers which ate up my retainer quickly. So, essentially you end up spending more money for his ignorance. He and his assistant do not communicate well with clients. He failed to provide me with copies of necessary documents and I often had to make extra trips to his office because of mistakes he had made. Because he doesn't have enough experience, he misses a lot of detail. If you are looking for someone to practice family law, he is not your man.

I am writing this review to share my experience with the legal services provided by Attorney Barton. I believe that providing feedback about my experience is essential in assisting others who may be seeking legal representation. My overall experience with Attorney Barton was deeply disappointing and fell short of my expectations. From the beginning of our professional relationship, I had hoped for a diligent and supportive advocate who would prioritize my best interests. Unfortunately, this was not the case. Firstly, I must express my disappointment regarding the lack of preparation leading up to the hearing. Despite my explicit request, the night before my final hearing I had to contact Mrs. Barton and request last-minute preparation for both myself and my witness. This unexpected request should not have been necessary, as it is a fundamental aspect of legal representation to adequately prepare clients and their witnesses for court proceedings. Furthermore, during the hearing, I was dismayed to learn that she did not mention the incident that occurred at my son school, which resulted in his out-of-school suspension. I made several requests for her to address the opposing parties work schedule and to bring up important issues such as the gun incident, where my son had access to his father’s firearm on multiple occasions (as listed in the threat assessment I provided), the cigarette incident where he brought his father's cigarette to school, and the level of aggression our son has displayed since being in his fathers care. However, none of these crucial points were mentioned during the proceedings. This omission was particularly troubling, as it undermined the opportunity to present relevant and compelling evidence supporting my case. Additionally, Mrs. Barton’s statement that she saw my children’s father as a good parent who cares about his kids contradicted the evidence we had submitted, clearly demonstrating his abusive behavior towards our children. She failed to mention his history of DV, child abuse convictions, DUIs, and the several reports made to the department of family and children services from our children’s school. Throughout the proceedings, I observed several missed opportunities for her to object to inappropriate lines of questioning from the opposing side. Her soft-spoken demeanor and failure to assertively advocate for my interests and the well-being of our children left me feeling unsupported and vulnerable. During a 10-minute mediation period granted by the judge, she allowed the GAL to dominate the conversation with irrelevant matters for a significant portion of the limited time provided. This lack of control over the proceedings and failure to utilize the allotted time effectively further contributed to my disappointment and frustration. Moreover, I was deeply disappointed when the judge announced her intention to make a final ruling without allowing my witness to testify, and Mrs. Barton remained silent, failing to advocate for my rights at that crucial moment. Overall, the services provided by Mrs. Barton fell far short of the level of advocacy and professionalism I expected and deserved. I entrusted her with my faith, time, and financial resources, expecting competent, thorough, and ethical representation. Unfortunately, the outcome of the hearing mirrored what I could have expected if I had represented myself, as no substantial progress was made in addressing my concerns. I sincerely hope that this review prompts Mrs. Barton to reflect upon and address the concerns raised. Constructive feedback can lead to growth and improvement in legal practice, ultimately benefiting future clients. It is my genuine desire that Mrs. Barton takes these matters seriously and makes the necessary changes to better serve her clients in the future.

Despite having been in practice for such a short time, LQ is an exceptionally good attorney. She represented me in a case where I was being sued as the Executor of an estate for a debt which the statute of limitations had expired. (I am a retired attorney and know that lawyers who represent themselves have a fool for a client, hence LQ representing me.). I was blown away by how thorough her research was and the complexity of her legal theories, which she then expertly articulated in the legal documents she drafted and filed. Needless to say, I won the case. Or, I should say, LQ won the case. This lady is sharp, sharp, sharp. She is also very client-oriented, and was very good about keeping in touch with me to advise me as to the status of my case, which I appreciated greatly. If you are looking for a jam-up attorney, look no further than LQ. I could not have been more pleased with her services. 10/10, highly recommend.

This lawyer did not do his job effectively. In fact he told me I was being railroad in my custody case during consultation and assure he could help me. John did the complete opposite and allowed me to be railroad by Bryan county lawyers and judges. He knew he couldn’t fight those unethical court officials. The GAL in the case he claim he knew personally. The judge recused himself on the day of a prior hearing and John was hired as the Judge gave me 45 days (giving temporary custody to opposing party) John suggested mediation and another judge was hired to perform a long 4 hour mediation. John didn’t go over mediation with me prior to this day, however, he billed me for it. There was a final decree in which I had no clue was changed in favor of the opposing party. John never went over those changes with me. Things I never agreed on was in the final order, but not on the form I signed during mediation. The change was a total nightmare as I had to make accommodations which cost me my job. I do not recommend this attorney. He took my money and did absolutely nothing. I will forever remember how I was treated unethically.

I hired Barr for a custody case. She ignored my emails and phone calls. She was unorganized, unprepared and incompetent. I was sent an email at 3pm on a Friday with the judge's decision and when I called her office because I had questions, she was gone on a boat ride and guess what she still has not returned my call as of today (Tuesday). Didnt tell me what other options i had or anything. She had me to submit documents that could not be submitted to the courts. The day before court she sends me documents to review which I did not have time to review due to me traveling to GA for court, she asked me to write down questions I wanted her to ask the plaintiff while they were testifying, and almost every document the plaintiffs lawyer submitted as an exhibit I did not know anything about but she made sure their lawyer got copies of mine. I was embarrassed to have her as my lawyer. It's so much more that I could share but i would reach my limit on this review. I'm disgusted, hurt, upset, livid, I'm just an emotional wreck. She just took my money, I could have represented my own self. When searching for an attorney in family law please do not waste your time or money with her. Now I have to put out more money for another lawyer because of her negligence. #worstlawyerever

I hired Karen Dove Barr to represent me in a divorce - made me all kinds of promises and didn't keep any! Told me ex could not get alimony under any circumstances, but Judge granted it and made it permanently. Dove Barr said I could get custody of my child, but judge gave me 2 days a month visitation, and Dove Barr was late for this important court date and was totally unprepared and not even sure of my name when called to testify! Because she demanded payment up front, I had little leverage, then she tried to charge me $5,000 MORE because she attended hearing that she knew about when I hired her! She is totally incompetent and has no clue what she is doing. Other attorneys eat her for lunch!

My son has an open case in Savannah and it has been open for almost 2 years. This man was supposed to be his lawyer who never ever tried to contact us let us know anything. The only thing he answers is text messages and it's always the same rhetorical, textbook answers. He would always apologize for the delay even though that is a very big delay of almost 2 years. Mind you my son had never been in trouble before and my son has an intellectual disability .I spoke with the district attorney they told me that my son's lawyer needed to shake things up a little bit so we can get this going I relate the message and this man's response is "don't contact me again". He should have removed himself from the case a long time ago and if I had known what type of man he was and what type of attitude he had or realized it a little earlier than I would have been fired him. I think he just didn't care because we are out of state and to be honest I think he dragging his feet because my son is of color. I have plans for this lawyer because he did not fulfill his obligations. If you want someone who's not going to drag their feet, or if you want someone who is going to work with you and not against you I would suggest you hire someone else.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
