Cam was my divorce attorney in 2016. Cam over books herself and is worn out. Cam did not have time for me and would not call me back for several days. When she finally called back she was rushed and irritated.. She was unkind and condescending to me, just what you do not need while going through a stressful divorce. After 3 months of a horrible experience I had to drop her. When I sent her an email telling her this she immediately wrote the court and said she dropped me! She did nothing to make my case progress and she took $10k from me. She did not protect me and left me worse off than if I had never hired her. I feel it is my responsibility to let others know my experience.

It is beyond ridiculous how incredible this woman is. Dynamic, articulate, a fireball, knows my case inside and out, available when needed, passionate for my children, forthright with what is possible and what would be a stretch to ask for, all in all she has helped me find my spine again after years of being torn down by my ex. She reminds me what my kids deserve and my right to fight for them and they're overall wellbeing. Would hire her again in a heartbeat and trust her abilities even if it was a murder charge. What a lady!!!!!

Cam’s strength, compassion, knowledge, and persistence were unbelievable. Time and time again, whether it was in the courtroom, on the phone, corresponding on email, or in a room face to face; she took control, and always made it happen. Highly ethical, her interpersonal skills and legal expertise combined with her no nonsense approach is a formula for success. And, her assistant Deb is phenomenal. The team, is one to watch! I am, and will always be forever grateful to Cam and Deb. Their patience, respect, and positive perspective, as I struggled to get back on my feet in a very complex case, was truely a life saver. The complications of divorce, restraining orders, bankruptcy, and foreclosure were handled with the utmost professionalism and collaboration. Cam is simply the very best. Excellence defined!

Hiring Rob Cossey was the best thing I could have done in my terrible legal situation. I was violently assaulted and wrongfully accused of being the assailant in early 2023. I was charged with second degree DV assault with strangulation. This was a horrific ordeal for myself and my family. The entire charge was DISMISSED after 5 months because he successfully was able to prove that I was not the assailant, I was the victim. He is obviously very well respected in the legal community. As you can imagine, in the aftermath of being assaulted, I was not in the best place, but he communicated with me so well. He was responsive, honest, up front, but also assuring and grounding. He even made me laugh multiple times and I appreciated that. His wife Shirley was also just such a sweetheart and added such a good balance to their partnership in representing me. Multiple times they went out of their way to support me and assure me. Rob and Shirley believed in me the entire time, which meant the world, and they worked as quickly as the system would allow them to in order to resolve the situation. I couldn't have asked for a better outcome. Not only did they dismiss the charge, the prosecution recognized I was not the assailant, which meant a lot for me to know. I would recommend Rob to anyone and am FOREVER so grateful to him and Shirley and the rest of the office for EVERYTHING. Shout out to Kelly, as well, for being a firecracker and representing me in the PO portion of all of this. She was also just fantastic. Everyone in the office was so kind to me, treated me with dignity, and worked hard to achieve the best possible outcome!! A million thanks to them and a huge recommendation to anyone looking for legal representation (specifically in my case a criminal defense attorney and protection order representation).

Words cannot describe the effort that I have received from this office. Above and beyond. Family law is an extraordinarily difficult situation as a loving Father and I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to be a client. Because of this office I am able to bring a few extra smiles to my son's life and we are able to share moments that would not be without the efforts of this office.

Rob is an ethical, honest and extremely knowledgeable attorney. In addition, his long career has created and nurtured many relationships with professionals in the Washington legal system where he is highly respected. During my two recent very hurtful legal cases, first for a completely falsified restraining order by my loved one, followed by my family law case, I found Rob and his staff truly listen to you to get a full understanding of what your case entails, including the backgrounds of those involved. Rob stays current on the happenings of your case, reads all emails and documents in a timely manner and is very responsive. They guide you along the way; you never feel ignored or put on the backburner. My previous divorce experience a few years ago was disastrous as it became apparent the only goal of attorneys on both sides was to prolong the case, increasing their income while draining their clients of time and money. So I much appreciated Rob and staff lessening the financial and emotional stress involved by zeroing in on the truth, impressive representation at trial and successful efforts to achieve the best possible outcome (the Restraining Order was denied and my family law case was satisfactorily settled out of court). My confidence in Rob and his staff to not only be diligent, but to put me and my case first never wavered. I sincerely enjoyed working with Rob (and attorneys Kelly and Jennifer) as well as Estie and everyone else I encountered at Cossey Law. They are competent, friendly, genuinely nice people who make a painful experience so much more bearable!

After being improperly charged, I hired Mr. Lee. He seemed competent in the interview, did a great sales job getting me to hire him. When you have a false charge filed against you that can cause you to even lose your business, you are stressed. Last thing you want is a laughing, jovial attorney that always asks you if you are having as much fun as he is. His reminder at every hearing 'Isn't this exciting?' does not bode well when you are stressed. He does not recognize the seriousness his clients face. Case resolution? The same 'deal' the next guy in line received who had no lawyer at all. I am calling Mark Vovos next time.

I caught a trespasser hunting my property without a license or i.d. This is called poaching where I come from. I peacefully relieved the suspect of his weapon with an agreement to return it a later time & location if he could produce a license. Instead, he later called police & I was charged with first degree robbery involving a weapon. The poacher was not charged. Law Enforcement neglected several of their responsibilities & became the problem more so than the poacher. I have a reputation to protect & Richard Lee went to work immediately. He answered my calls personally & returned all my emails the same day, sometimes within minutes. He instantly created counter-attack strategies & prepared for offense as well as my defense. As a land-rights proponent, I was excited by the thought of a trial but Richard had my charges dropped within a week. Extremely easy to talk to and very professional. And, I really liked the fact that I could tell that Richard was pissed off a little that these charges were brought against a land owner acting in fair defense of his property. It's not too often we find attorneys that get seriously involved a case. Richard Lee is a true American warrior.

Dave Hearrean is the lowliest attorney around. He represented a family member and the Judge told us we needed to review our options as he was never prepared. He was afraid of the prosecutor and had a panic attack or something that looked like it. He claimed to be a fierce bulldog in the court room but was actually a whimpering little puppy. He called all the family and told us all different stories. He is a LIAR and a CHEAT. The only phone call he returned was for wanting more money. He was a useless defender and he acted like his client was the problem. He never discussed issues with his client just did or not did do what he wanted. Beware of this sly talking, shaking (he can’t even write, it’s unreadable – he trembles almost constantly), and he is a nasty smelling chain smoker. We do NOT recommend him to anyone!!! He should not be licensed to practice law anywhere.

Carl Hueber is either a legal super genius, or extremely lucky. He filed a losing appeal that made it possible to fix a losing PRP to get my conviction overturned. What!? Yeah. I'll explain that later, but first... Hueber first represented me at resentencing. He shook the prosecutor's hand before it began, after which I felt hiring him was a huge mistake: the handshake didn't look like the one you see before a fight. Hueber wasn't all that impressive in the courtroom, and his motions all failed(two different things, but related). However, he was a good salesman, and suckered me into getting him a bunch of money to file an appeal. Here's where the lucky or super genius comes in. The PRP filed by another attorney had omissions(at my request because I am a moron) that, by technicality, would/may have caused it to lose unless it were appended. By filing the appeal he kept the sentence from becoming final. This prevented the case from being time barred from collateral attack. This allowed the PRP to be appended. This got my conviction overturned... After a decade. Hueber also represented me at a bond hearing. Backstory: Before trial I was out on my own recognizance(OR). I paid $0 bail. It was just my promise to show up to court. After trial, I filed a motion for an appeal bond, which was granted. My sentence was 9 years to life, I did 10 years, and had my conviction was overturned(retrial ordered). I never missed a single day of court, have no criminal record at all, and my behavior was exemplary. With no conviction, my sentence basically done, being out on OR the first trial, no failure to appears, no priors, nothing... the bail amount he procured was six figures, and not much lower than when I had just a couple months into that 11 to life sentence. Yes, it was 11 and then turned into 9, but that's another story. I don't know if my review was that helpful, or if Hueber was all that helpful. He's either lucky, or a super genius. That makes him either a bad attorney, or a bad-ass attorney. These are just the facts. Basis for the rating. THE APPEAL: Six stars or No stars. RE-SENTENCING AND BOND: The rest of his representation was as disappointing as the average attorney, so three stars. Weighing it all in, and the importance of each - the average is 3 stars with a deviation of 2 stars. That means he should have 1 star or 5 stars and this review was pointless.

It was not a helpful experience at all. Despite me giving the information he asked for He just replied with "That's all I can give you with the information you provided" All without asking me questions for what information he needed. The person was clearly preoccupied with typing and despite him stating he didn't have access to the online portal he was somehow able to see what had been filed under the case #. I am beyond disappointed with how I was treated and dismissed. Its pretty clear the SPOKANE COUNTY COURTHOUSE is in dire need of a revamp and house cleaning. It is 100% a racket.

This attorney is a scam artist. We hired him for a family member. Paid him 5 thousand dollars down. And he did not not contact us or do anything for months after. When we complained and asked for our money back, he claimed he would do the case for only the 5 grand. A year later, he sent paper work to collections going after me for 10 grand. This attorney is very bias. She was very unprepared and appeared to not talk to other prosecuting attorneys. Example: the state prosecuting agreed to an early tease from house arrest (2 months early) upon arrival to court it was found that a different prosecutor (ms. Olson) was present. Ms. Olson neglected any recollection of an early release agreement then recommended more time be added on. I personally find her to be very unprofessional for this reason. I'd recommend maybe bumping heads with fellow prosecutors to be better prepared. Further I fully intend to make my complaints very well known on this and other issues with the WSBA.

A retired police officer, a woman whose niece was date raped, another woman with rape issues from her college days that was a Court Appointed Special Advocate(CASA), and a Department of Corrections(DOC) worker that worked in a prison primarily for sex offenders, sat on my jury, unchallenged. Most I didn't know about because Alan Rossi convinced me to not be present during the private jury voir dire held in chambers. It's on the record. Sheet music selectively removed from my massive collection. A vague letter with nothing to authenticate it. A music CD, the jurors were not allowed to listen to. I learned of these exhibits the first day of trial... when they were admitted and he didn't claim surprise. The judge asked him on the record if he claimed surprise, he said "no". The judge even mentioned how the letter couldn't be authenticated, yet Rossi insisted the prosecutor be allowed to use it. The judge even asked about the relevancy of the sheet music, and somehow they let them be entered because someone thought they were important. It's on the record. Rossi put me on the stand with no preparation at all. The prosecutor badgered me over and over about the word 'uninvited', basically testifying and answering my questions. Alan Rossi failed to ask for any clarification on things the prosecutor asked and just let them stay prejudicial. It's on the record. Rossi's closing argument was stuttered, broken up, no flow. Even I couldn't pay attention. No charisma at all. The record can't show this. The record only shows verbatim what he said, not how poorly it was delivered. The prosecutor engaged in misconduct during his closing arguments. This time Rossi objected, and then asked me if he should move for a mistrial. I said, "No?" thinking there's no way the jury could find me guilty. Not asking for a retrial did not "preserve" it for appeal. I blamed myself for a long time over this, but then realized his job was to educate and advise his client so he makes an intelligent decision. He did not do this. Although this conduct was brought up on appeal, the argument was lost based on not requesting a mistrial. This can be shown through court opinions and the record. Sentencing was delayed because Rossi requested the pre-sentencing investigation not be done, for whatever reason. Then the judge ordered it done. It's on the record. Rossi refused to file my notice of appeal. I tried to file it myself and he intercepted it. It was barely filed in time. I asked for all the transcripts, he intercepted it and left out the jury voir dire. The transcripts he left out contained what would later reverse my conviction. It's also what eventually reversed another one of his clients convictions. Letters/filings/opinions prove this. Rossi refused to file a motion for an appeal bond to secure my release. I couldn't file it because he was representing me. I had to try to fire him and file it myself. You can't fire a public defender! He finally withdrew, and I filed the motion. The judge called him in to represent me in court for the appeal bond hearing. My motion was granted. Alan Rossi turned to me and said, "I've never seen this before". Alan Rossi refused to give me my files as required by law and the state bar association. I was forced to CC one of his many letters of refusal to the Washington State Bar Association along with another letter very formally requesting he reconsider. What I eventually got was nearly worthless. When I asked where certain things were, he claimed it was attorney work product and I wasn't entitled to it. These are just the facts. Supported and documented. I was facing 4 charges and was acquitted on 2. 1 star may be appropriate where I couldn't leave no stars. However, all were life sentences, so winning 2 doesn't really affect anything.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
