We hired James Phillips to help our son who is in the Navy currently going through separation. He has been our attorney and has been there for us over the past four and a half months. He has always made himself available to us despite his hectic schedule helping others in the military. He has provided us with not only legal expertise but also personal reassuring advice to get us through the most difficult time in our lives. I would without any doubts recommend James Phillips to any active member of the military to represent them and fight for their benefits they rightly deserve.

Mr. Phillips has been a very important part of my life for a short time however, it has felt like a lifetime. Being in the district we were in, things were on a very slow roll and my stress levels were at extreme levels but Mr. Phillips continuously keep me reassured things would be ok. He has a grand knowledge of the law and the local system. If ever I need ANY type of legal help, this would be the man I return to! Never a dull moment, Jaime and Tiffony! Thanks for everything!!!

I had Susan for part of a custody case and I would say she lacks the experience and knowledge to handle trying cases. Throughout the proceedings she used phrases like "show them we are serious" or "show them we are ready to play hardball" or even "fight the good fight" She was supposed to work on a petition to modify and handle the TRO that was handed out. She did ok on the TRO issuing, but once we got to court she was in over her head. The opposing counsel was able to steer the testimonies to their side without objections or interference. We went back to court today. During her rebuttal today she stammered and stuttered repeatedly. She asked for my help in finding rebuttal to testimony and then didn't use any of the rebuttal. She was given proof of abuse and didn't introduce it because she didn't think it would help our case. Overall I feel she lacks the confidence and ability to provide clients with objective and unbiased attorney privileges. Furthermore when we began talking outside she realized she had done poorly and I confronted her about it, she said the best option would be for her to step aside and file a motion stating thus. I immediately fired her instead so i could seek counsel immediately. During the proceedings there were 3 counts of Perjury, and 1 Judge mistake. Yet none of these were ever brought to light. Also when the judge asked Ms. Young where she stood on the preparation for the petition today, she said she had not worked on it as she was awaiting the outcome of this hearing. Upon hearing this the judge was furious as why this attorney had not began work on something even though it had been on the books for 5 months.

Ms. Young represented me on an extradition warrant and misdemeanor theft charges, also a violation of parole. I was very afraid that I was going to back to jail but she worked very hard to see that I did not. She didn't treat me like a criminal and she didn't treat me like a number--she treated me with respect.

How is it even ok to let this guy who used to be the county probation officer for years and loved teaming up with the DA to put your butt in jail become the public defender? You read that right. He was a PO and didn’t give no chances cuz he just wants to see all junkies go to jail instead of helping them has now became your attorney??? The one the judge appoints you? How is that even legal? I call him Mr. 180 cuz even for a simple charge that should only get you 30 to 60 days in jail he works out a “deal” with his bestie Beth Willis bka needs some d!€k in her life District Attorney and always gets you 180 days! That’s right people. Two nerve pills? 180 days. Shoplifting? 180 days. That’s the best you could do David? He replies “well Beth wanted 200 days but I talked her down for ya!” Oh not to mention he trying to get some chick to take a 12 YEAR SENTENCE for a, get this, SIMPLE POSSESSION. Bahahaha you got jokes in the courtroom this morning huh? NOT FUNNY MR. 180!

David was my probation officer for a while. Throughout my probation period he watch me change from a addict who broke the law and didn't care the consequences into a person who not only stopped drugs but who had also changed her mind set and way of living. He was very good about allowing me to be honest no matter how bad it was and instead of jail he made me take a mrt class which changed my life. He seen more than a junkie criminal when I walked into his office. He's never been my attorney however he did stand up for me in court and told the judge about the changes I had made which got me 6 months good behavior probation that as of now I'm off and free. If I ever need a lawyer I'll choose David. He is the type that stays in contact with you and keeps you up to date about your case. I trust him and I hope you will to. Mr. Brown agreed to represent me for two separate traffic offenses and gave me a slightly reduced rate ($500 for both). However, he instructed me to go ahead and pay the original higher rate ($300) for the first ticket he had already billed me for and then he sent a second bill for $200, which I also paid in good faith. The result of Mr. Brown's representation for the speeding ticket was disappointing. He was only able to get the speed reduced slightly and the court costs reduced accordingly, but I still wound up with three points against my license and over a hundred dollars in court costs on top of what I paid him! It has been a number of years since I needed a traffic attorney, but back when I drove cross country and picked up an occasional speeding ticket, they were always able to get the ticket dismissed. Mr. Brown's excuse was that the court in Alcoa was very hard line on speeding tickets. But when he voiced his apprehension about being able to effectively represent me for the second ticket where the other driver actually struck me, I began to wonder whether this guy knows what he's doing. I've had a few traffic attorneys represent me over the years and this is the first time I ran into one who considered himself ineffective. When I expressed my concern, he abruptly withdrew from my case, but said he will only refund $200 instead of the $250 we had agreed to when he agreed to represent me for the second traffic offense. Not only do I feel duped by an attorney who is clearly ineffective, I feel ripped off by an obvious con artist.

I switched to Ms. Waterhouse after my first attorney never got anything done. With Ms. Waterhouse, Paperwork was filed the same day I went in, and a mediation date was put on the calendar. I was beginning to think my divorce would last forever! For the first time since I can remember, my ex-husband and I agreed on something! So, I'm writing from jail, so if any of this is edited, I don't really have any control of that. I'm giving this chick five stars because I don't want to screw up her average, but I have to say she is the absolute worst criminal defense attorney in Nashville. I was arrested last year for disorderly conduct and public intoxication. Because of Ms. Cane's absolute lack of professionalism and incompetence, I was convicted of murder! Her closing arguments (exact quote): "Uh, I don't really know what's going on here, or who this guy is, but I think he killed someone. You should send him to jail." The jury took ten minutes to convict. She actually had the gall to show up to the prison and ask for the rest of her fee. THIS POST HAS BEEN APPROVED BY THE TENNESSEE DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS Riverbend Maximum Security Institution (RMSI) INMATE 3772-128 CHARGE: DISORDERLY CONDUCT, PUBLIC INTOXICATION FINDING: MURDER, GUILTY AT TRIAL ELIGIBLE FOR PAROLE: 2045

I hired this firm to file an SSDI claim. I was wounded in Afghanistan and eligible for expedited SSDI claims processing. In attempting to communicate this to the staff representatives when I filed my claim and in subsequent phone conversations. I was told the firm was not familiar with the Wounded Warrior expedited process and I would need to handle that myself. In an effort to explain the provision the lady I spoke with identified herself as an attorney but then refused to answer my question and passed me off the a supervisor. I informed him that she had identified herself as an attorney and was rather rude. He assured me she had not identified herself as attorney when clearly she had. The end of the conversation was the same. I would need to handle my situation directly with the SSA and the firm could not help me. If you are veteran/wounded warrior I would be very cautious about engaging this firm.

After requesting that his firm retrieve evidence that would have surely gotten me acquitted, never once did an investigator take any of my concern seriously. I wrote four letters to the professional Board of responsibility concerning his approach with me as a client. I also filed a motion in court to get rid of him as my attorney. After reading my letters and my motion his response to me was, how he did not give a sh** about the letters I had been writing. Never once did he visit me and take any notes concerning my case. I myself ended up filing all of the Motions in which I asked for him to take concern of, I did this alone. Alone while incarcerated in Davidson County jail with only the jail law library to assist me. Not only did he not obtain the evidence in which I told him existed, by the time that I had someone of my own hiring to locate the evidence that tapes had been erased therefore the only evidence that existed to prove my innocence had been treated as trash and discarded. Mr. Kovach has never treated me with any type of respect and even as he represented me in my last probation violation never once did he speak about any of the issues and which would have kept me from being violated but instead worked out a deal that would start my probation over from the beginning and brought it to me as if he had done me a Justice. I do not recommend mr. Kovach as an attorney that I would want an enemy to hire. I find no pleasure in this review because normally I would not participate in such a thing. But since 2009 my life has been in shambles because of this attorney. As God is my witness none of what I am saying is out of spite. It is the truth nothing but the truth and right now I still have every letter every motion and responding letter concerning my case and his representation to this very day. I would gladly say the only thing pleasurable about mr. Kovach is his resemblance to Chris Farley. I do believe the day that I met him I noticed that and I thought that I just may have gotten myself a decent attorney although he is court-appointed. But from the moment he spoke I knew I was in trouble. And again, I have been in trouble since then. Do not hire this attorney! I suggest anyone concerning this attorney for hire do more research and you will find mini more stories of unsatisfactory concerning his representation. I would like nothing more than to leave my name but at this particular moment unfortunately he still represents me due to judge Fishburn not allowing me to hire new counsel. This system does not work. Yours truly number one unsatisfied customer of Mark Kovach.

Mark Kovach is an exceptional lawyer, Sure, he knows what he is doing and does it well BUT with ME Mark went beyond what any reasonable person would expect. Visited me in hospitals and other places when HE DID NOT HAVE TO. Al;ways he had a personal gift to brighten things up. That is what is missing today in a lot of things, the man CARES about YOU because he really DOES. While my case (a divorce) ended up not being done (my choice) he was up to and past where he could have been. Being a law school graduate myself, I can appreciate the hard personal time the man uses in his business and also in his life. You are fortunate to have him representing you, He is articulate, bright, and can show incredible kindness besides knowing what he is doing. My life is BETTER for knowing this outstanding man.

For more than 3 years I have had money taken for child support by both TN and VA (where my ex lives). Although I have had custody of my daughter for more than 3 years, VA continued to intercept my taxes and TN kept trying to hold me in contempt for not paying and being in arrearage. Finally, yesterday.....Attorney Taylor showed the judge how I have overpaid child support owed and finally got it settled. The time and effort he put into my case got me the outcome I deserved. However, Mr. Milazo was just that, "all talk." He charged for services never rendered and continued to drive my bill up until I finally dismiss him. I was in a crisis and trying to get a restraining order against my boyfriend and he agreed to meet with me at the spur of the moment the same day, which was much appreciated. But first thing i noticed walking in was that he had his assistant and then one other girl just lingering around the door listening to everything i had to say about my very private and high profile case. I didnt appreciate extra ears being in the room doing nothing but wanting to hear all the details of my horrible situation for her own curiosity. I was very distraught and didnt have the mind to tell this chick to get lost. Secondly, as i started to talk about obtaining palimony, this lawyer starts letting out sarcastic "ha's" and then saying, "i hate to break it to you but there is no law that will give you palimony." I already know this, but palimony IS recognized in the courts of california even though it is not a law there either. I was trying to ask him if it was recognized in court system here in TN, but he kept repetitively saying the same thing as though I was "missinformed." He obviously didn't understand what I was asking and kept on with his know-it-all, "youve been missinformed" and "somebodys been pullin your leg" attitude when he is completely ignorant to the way CA courts work. I was only asking if the system is the same in TN; I wasn't trying to have a debate about "the law." Then, he starts urging me to go to a battered womens shelter where they will "help me." I was upset, i wasnt beat up so wtf? The only help i wanted was a preventative restraining order and turned out That since I didnt have a black eye, my story of past abuse wasnt really enough to warrent a restraining order. I was insulted when he kept pushing the womens shelter pamphlet to me saying i should probably go there. For what? Thats not what i came to his office for. I have money, why would i go to a womems shelter and sleep on a cott when I can get a hotel room? Anyways thats my opinion. The extra ears in the room was very unprofessional, not to mention that they all three stepped out of the doorway to proceed to loudly wisper as though i cant here what they are saying. Idiots. This is a private matter Milazo, extra ears should not be in the room. If you have something to say u say it in front of me. You dont take the details of my case and proceed to gossip in the doorway. I really feel like I should not have gone there and should have made them sign a privacy contract before telling them my case. All felt very elementary and gossipy... Which my case was very juicy i admit, but i wish i didnt tell these people anything.

Paid HALF my retainer fee yet they refused to help me postpone a court date until ALL $1500 was applied to them. Had another charge and the second I mentioned it, applying more money or even more work to help me, the attorney cut me off and said they’d be returning my retainer and pretty much not taking my case. Never in any case I’ve ever had have I been treated in such a manner having No previous convictions. I DO NOT recommend them.

Charging my family $200 for two brief phone calls with no legal advice or contract discussion is not only disproportionate but also inappropriate and unethical. Shame on you.

Brenda is unorganized, during our initial consult she lost my paperwork that her part time 1-5 legal-aid handed to her, doesn't really seem to have much interest in your legal matters or what you have to say, she was more concerned about avoiding court and trying to rush through a divorce so she can collect her check and move on.

Lies to her clients when she screws up. Lies for her clients in the court room and to cause delays. Horrible at communicating with her clients as well as with opposing counsel.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
