This is a relatively new lawyer who thinks he knows everything situation. He has a lot to learn and has very little experience. He is older and new so that is misleading. When you look at him you would think he is seasoned but he is not. Just look up his info on the board website. At times you will find him pleasant and a bit organized but that falls apart quickly. He is also very goofy not in a good way. He is the timid type and doesn’t appear to feel comfortable rolling up his sleeves and fighting for his clients. He also likes to gossip which I found to be quite the turn off. He bad mouths other attorneys while at the same time trying to “work” with them. I guess it’s because he is from a very small town. He did nothing for me but cause more problems. In my humble opinion I would run to another attorneys office as fast as I could. I think this lawyer would do better as a corporate type attorney that just does paperwork and has little client contact. I mean everyone can do something so I won’t say he is the absolute worst but I certainly would never hire him again. I know a lot more of what to look for in an attorney now.

I hired Mr. Summers to represent me for a DUI charge in East Ridge court. He was in the media a lot at the time and seemed to be one of the best attorneys in our area. Definitely very knowledgeable. From my experience he does a cattle call on a Saturday morning and has all of his potential customers show up so he can do his dog and pony show. He has everyone show up at the same time and you just wait until he calls you in. I felt like he was a car salesman and really trying to sell himself to me. Well, it worked because I hired him. Of course I paid an extra fee for him having to come to court on a Tuesday night. With that I ended up paying his total fee off prior to my first court appearance with him. That night he had several clients. I watched one by one as he called them into the hall to discuss the case and then come back to talk to the judge. He never called my name so I went out to him in the hall. He asked my name, I told him what it was and he started walking away from me to another client. I went back up to him and asked what was going on. He got angry with me and said that he runs a business and that in order for him to operate his business he needs his clients to pay him. He was a real jerk the way he was talking to me. Then I got pissed and told him he needed to check his records because I had fully paid him. I pulled the receipt out of my wallet and he was stunned. His attitude changed. He represented me and I was convicted of a 1st offense when it was technically my 2nd. Not sure if I could have done any better since it was all done in East Ridge. The icing on the cake was getting a letter from him a couple weeks later asking for basically a "bonus" check for achieving what he called favorable results. I didn't owe it and he didn't deserve it. I personally believe there are better attorneys to work with out there other than Mr. Summers.

Attorneys are who made it so that it is so incredibly difficult to represent yourself or sue anyone else and so exceptionally expensive to obtain an attorney, creating defined lines between the Capital and Districts.

This is such a great service. When you find yourself in a situation where an attorney is needed, it is very overwhelming. I called around Knoxville for two days trying to find the right attorney that could help me. I contacted the Knoxville Bar Association and within a few hours I received an attorney referral. It was that easy! When I contacted my referred attorney, I panicked when I found out it would be a couple of weeks before we could meet due to scheduling conflicts. I contacted Tracy Chain at the Knoxville Bar Association. She is amazing! She understood my panic and assured me the referred attorney was the best attorney for my situation. She was very helpful and offered a few other suggestions to help. After speaking with my referred attorney, I couldn’t be more pleased with the referral. He truly was the best attorney to fit my situation. He was patient, kind and very knowledgeable of the law regarding my issue. I felt like he really understood me and my unique situation. Most notably, I found him to be extremely honest. He explained everything in great detail so I had a better understanding of my options. I couldn’t have found a more perfect fit.

Steve is a great attorney when in court. His paralegal Brandy is his downfall. This woman will ignore calls, e mails, sending you paperwork and basically any form of doing her job. She claims she’s doing things in which aren’t true. I have a child involved in my divorce. His father had to tell me had gotten visitation because this woman was too lazy to( and had known for weeks!)Then calling to discuss this problem with her she never had my attorney call me back heck she probably never gave him the note to call me and proceeded to yell at me over the phone. She is horrible. If you want to lose then be sure to work with her! Don’t hire Steve unless he gets a paralegal that wants to do their job. She’s messing with peoples lives here. Very unprofessional woman.

Mr. Ward represented a family member for us who had his wife and girlfriend living in the same house, one upstairs and one in the basement, he was involved in a domestic with his girlfriend and she was trying to keep all his belongings and his daughter, whom she and the wife had no blood relation too. My husband and I hired him to represent our family member and us to get his daughter and belongings back! Mr. Ward is an excellent attorney and knows how to take control in the courtroom. His legal assistant, Mrs. Wilma, is very helpful and knows what she is doing! The entire office staff are professional and treated us like people that they have known for a long time! You cannot go wrong hiring Mr. Ward, he does his job and we say he is a pit-bull of a lawyer because he doesn't take any bull and knows how to fight for his clients!

I hired Mr. Crabtree to represent me for injuries from a car wreck in June 2018. He was able to settle my case for the policy limits. Mr. Crabtree was also able to reduce my medical bills. I got much more than I thought I would receive. Mr. Crabtree did a great job for me and I highly recommend him. He was able to do all of this in 4 months.

I hired Crabtree over a year ago for full custody of my daughter. I paid him close to $1700. Since he has not given me direct legal advice. I have called probably well over a million times. As other reviews he is out of the office or in a meeting. His secretary is no help either. She promises to send the message to have him call me back but I have waited around all day on multiple occasions. When I go in to the office and demand to see him we sit and he promises me all kinds of things then send me on my merely way back to square one. He owes the court money I gave him, he was served papers to defend me in court but failed to tell me and never went to defend me so now I'm suck with a crappy lawyer and no rights to my child all because her father won temporary custody because my lawyer couldn't inform me of court nor defend me in that matter!

David Webb handled a misdemeanor case for me. After paying 1500 and traveling all the way to Tennessee, he had my case taken under advisement. This judgement is neither guilty nor not guilty. It is meant to be that way so the individual has to pay another fee ( $500) to have the case expunged. I called David and his secretary was uncaring and rude to me. David said he would have a judge sign a paper and have my case listed as dismissed or non pros. He never seemed to get around to doing anything and now I still have an open case in Tennessee. He doesn't seem to like out of towners because after my case he made a rude remark about not visiting the area again. Wish I had taken my business elsewhere.

He will not communicate with client unless your sitting in the office being charged, but will send you an occasional letter telling you he advised you when he hasn't. Will not respond to certified letters. Schedules mediation and court dates without informing you. Likes to schedule them when you've notified him in advance that your unavailable for certain dates. It took 6 months to get a copy of a modification request that he drafted for me. That was to be sent to the other party. Eventhough I reviewed it and had to fix his screw ups stating facts in the request during an office visit. I was charged an additional .5 hrs for him to redraft and fix errors in the original. Did not respond to a certified letter requesting a copy of the documents and response of contempt sent by opposing attorney. I only knew about the contempt allegations, because the opposing parting told me that they had be sent months ago. Legal assistant continiously lies about mailing out documentation. It took over 3 months to get papers served to the opposing parties. However a bill for services found it's way with no trouble; even though he has not did the one thing he was retained to do. I did not recieve my mediation dates in writing until I showed up at his office one day prior to mediation. I was told that it was mail out, but I never got it in the mail. During mediation he scheduled it so that if it took over two hours he had to leave. Really! Left his client in the middle of mediation to take care of personal business. The mediator did not attempt to rule on a decision, but deffered to give options which were all speculations of possibilities not the facts which were in front of him that showed just cause and burden of proof. So that was another $200.00 spent for nothing. Did I meantion I recieved a bill for just shy of $1000.00 even though I've already paid $1500.00. Heres the kicker if I don't pay with my court date coming up in a few months. Will I be standing there without a laywer. He has not even attempted to propose a settlement with the correct income to the opposing parties, but sits around waiting on them to propose to him. Reminder here I retained him to modify a child support obligation that showed a decrease in income of over 40%. You only need 15% to legally do this. On top of that he tells me that if I use the state to do it. That's it would be my ace in the hole and to save money and attorney fees I should just settle on something. Even though all the numbers preposed are speclative of possible income that could be made. But when pay charts and income made up to this point are shown as facts they are ignored. Every facts supporting document that has been requested has been provided. Income made and base pay charts provided. So where's my lawyer for my lawyer? If your smart enough to review facts before committing. Run now here's strike three on this guy. Find someone else; anyone else!

I find it odd that the only 2 positive reviews are just a day apart. I hired Bohn last year. I met her in that same library parking lot as I see others did. It should have been a red flag, no office. I asked her for a copy of our contract every single month. I finally received a copy 6 months later and it was illegible! I fired her just just about that time. This was just one problem. Bohn goes away for 10 days at a time not answering her phone. She just doesn't care. She had surgeries and can't let you know ahead of time either. She lost evidence and she is extremely dishonest. Monies you pay her come up missing. She sends invoices that she totals up hundreds over what they should so keep an eye on that. I had to hire another attorney and he picked it up from her house. In my file she had another persons evidence and my file stunk like cigarettes from her house/office. She is filthy and sloppy with your files. You should ask to see her desk before you hire her, OMG! She is so unorganized! I didn't return her call one day and she threatened to send the Sheriff to my home. She was lying just to threaten me. I could go on but my best advice to everyone is to keep looking. All these years in business and she only has 2 positive reviews? She actually brags about her 29 years in law but from the looks of it, they have not been good years by any means. If you already have a problem, get yourself a good lawyer, not this one.

You will just be giving money away. She does not return phone calls. Barely remembers your name. Will tell you two days before court. That you have court and she doesn’t knows the address. Send her evidence and she won’t present it. Use your retainer to send bills about phone calls and motions. Will not give you copies. Act like she works for opposing counsel. Threaten to withdraw if you ask her to job. The give you other clients information when you request your client file. Loves to meet in library parking lots on Gallatin Rd. Smells like menthol and hair products.

I was a little shocked at the other reviews. Cynthia fought hard for me and my children during my divorce. I was an absolute terrified wreck and she was supportive and reassuring. My outcome was better than what I had hoped for and I do not feel that money was her primary concern. She geninuely made me feel like she cared about my well being as well as my childrens'. I would not hesitate to hire her again.

Of course, was arrested for first DUI. Mr. Hill was hired the following week. He was recommended by the bail bondsman. Not once did I get a call from his office regarding my case. Mr Hill had no intention of trying to get my charges plead down and my outcome was exactly the same as it would have been without his 'services'. I found him nice but after I paíd him, his whole demeanor changed, very rude, arrogant, and dont think about firing him, u wont get ur money back, but got to say he is a good lawyer, if u can deal with his evil personality, getting made feel like u work for him, I got the feeling he counted the words he uttered to me, making sure not to say more than i had paid him for, no wonder he is single, and I feel sorry for the chick that works for him, probably his daughter.

This attorney is one of the worst ever. He did absolutely nothing to fight my case and I can back this up with a mountain of paperwork. He took my money and then got mad when the judge told him he would have to act as my court appointed attorney. From that point on he did nothing. He engaged in private meetings about my case worker the DA, the charging officer and the judge that I was not able to attend several times. He seemed to be working harder for the prosecution than for me. This attorney would not even file paperwork to dispute the unsigned search warrant that was used by the arresting officer to remove property from my home. Don't how this man. He is a theif.

He has been hired by the court to represent my husband who is incarcerated, I have tried calling multiple times and haven’t received any phone calls back. My husband has been in jail now 3 months and I haven’t heard a word! Definitely will be contacting and paying a lawyer to represent him further!

Refused to return calls, took money and did very little if nothing for the fee. Would not recommend this lawyer to anyone unless you want to pay him for nothing. I gave one star because it was the least amount.

He failed to file the counter suit he was originally hired to do. Failed to prepare for the case after he was hired to represent me. Did not even attempt to make contact with me until late in the day the Friday before trial with the following Monday being a holiday. Has refused to respond to me since trial. Has refused to provide me with the judges order which he is contractually obligated to do. Failed to refund my money or provide any accounting. FAILED FAILED FAILED.

Retained him in December 2012, have not spoken with him since March and only 4 times between December and March. Supposed to go to court soon. Have not heard from him and am told by the secretary at Kidwell, South & Beasley that she does not handle Brandon's calendar and he makes his own appointments. NO contact, no way to get copies of my files and he took my retainer... and I have no atty to go to court with.

We fell for this attorney’s smooth talking and he seemed to know what he was talking about and it sounded great to us what all he was going to do for us. So we hired him and started paying him. After that day he never returned our phone calls or texts that we would send him. He was never in his office. We had arranged to meet up with him 3 different days and times and something ALWAYS came up or he would just avoid us. So we fired him only to find out he lied to us about delaying our response that was due and he knew when it was due when we hired him. He never called the clerk’s office like he told us he did and he made us miss our deadline for filling a response. So now we are in desperate need of finding another attorney FAST to fix his mistake and for us not to loss everything WE worked for. DO NOT hire this attorney. He will take your money and you will never hear from him again. He should have told us he was too busy to take our case instead of just taking our money and wish we would just let deadlines go. The ONLY good thing he did was refund the WHOLE amount we paid him for doing NOTHING!!!

I have been going through a divorce for nearly a year and he doesn't return my phone calls, emails, or text messages. I schedule phone conversations with him and he seems to always reschedule claiming to be tied up in court. I am very unsatisfied with his practices. I am now in the process of settling my divorce myself!!

She is very unprofessional. She took my daughter's husband's side. She cursed me and got smart with me. She was done once she received her money. Please do not go to her. She acted like it was a bother to ask her any question.

Bad attitude and a horrible attorney. Can’t even be bothered to know your name. Will not take your calls but gladly take your money. Will not explain the court process. Will not inform of proceedings. Her assistant works well with her because her attitude is just as bad. Both are miserable and take it out on clients. Even if this review saves 1 person from her it’s worth it, no one should have the experience of spending your savings and fully trusting someone with your future and having it all crushed. It’s devastating.

So Rude! I honestly felt like she worked for the other side than for me. Incompetent, she did not seem like she was interested in taking things further, like it was a burden to go to bat for her own client. Especially, when several items came back in our favor. Once a plea was given, she seemed more interested in taking that than to continue. As an innocent client, I felt guilted into accepting, by my own attorney!! This was a few years back, but I think about being a pushover almost every day. Lost a lot because of how it played out including my career!! If you have one tiny notion to get someone else, DO IT! I myself didn't listen to my initial instinct, nor did I listen to two other very important persons in my life, as well as in the public and private sector of our community! Wish I had!

Aaron Rochelle was assigned to my son by the judge for and underage consumption charge. He did not return any phone calls leading up to the court hearing. My son and his mother both left messages to let him know that my son was in the hospital and would need a continuation. He did not return their calls nor asked the judge for the continuation which resulted in a warrant being served for non appearance and my son being booked into jail. The bail cost $2500 and was totally avoidable if Aaron Rochelle simply cared enough to do his job. His clients may not be rich but they are people.

First of all, I was not able to get in touch with him at all. I had to schedule a phone call a month and a half out and when that phone called rolled around it was maybe 5 minutes and that was it. No other contact before my court date. I had no way of getting a hold of him to ask questions. And on the day of my court date apparently there had been some issues with what he said he was going to submit to the court but did he contact me to let me know that? No so I was blindsided I had no time to think about my options, and when I seem flustered at the courthouse he told me I needed to hurry up and decide and stared me down and then when I told him I didn't really understand what my options were that he had just spent all of three and a half minutes explaining, he rolled his eyes and huffed at me. Then after I sort of kind of made a decision he got up and stormed into the courtroom and started filling out paperwork, shoved a piece of paper in front of me to sign and then a minute later I was in front of the judge and I literally had to look at him when the judge was asking me how I was answering the questions cause I didn't know what to say. More eye rolls. More huffing. I'm devastated because now I know that had I looked into it further and had actual representation I could have gotten out of the charge but instead I'm stuck with a year of probation and a charge on my record that's going to severely impact my future employment options in my career field of 20 years. Like the heading says he's absolutely worthless. He should be disbarred. Don't waste your time.

I called to set up a appointment 2 MONTHS before my court date. Which would have been 1 week and 2 days after he was appointed to me by the judge. The judge said to call a week from the day he was appointed to set up a appointment. But apparently those 2 days I waited (holiday) made it to the point that he got so busy with other clients that he couldn’t meet with me to discuss my case. I have not talked to him one time since he was appointed I have left over 30 messages begging him to give me 2 minutes of his time. Begging him to please call me because I’m going insane about this court case. Begging him to please just call me back. But I guess that’s too much. I don’t believe he should have been paid for my case even if he does show up to court. I haven’t talked to him I don’t even know what he looks like and at this point I have court in the morning at 9 and I haven’t slept in 3 days. I can’t remember the last time I ate anything . I haven’t showered in days. I haven’t been able to work because I am so depressed and scared that I’m almost feeling like the better option will be to skip court and run. This “man” is the real scum of the world and after this is over I’m about to sue the crap out of him because in the contract I received he is required to talk to me atleast once before my court date .

This woman may be good getting people disability, but she is not a good defense lawyer at all. She likes to sweet talk your accuser into dropping the false chargers they have filed against you. She is in tight with the local law enforcement and will not fight them on your behalf even when they have proven to have brought false charges against you. Not professional and quit my case 4 days before my court date and kept half of my money.

He was assigned to my case and it went downhill from there. He lied by saying my nurses could not testify on my behalf. One of my nurses testified in three similar cases. Another of my nurses testified twice in similar cases. I was not represented properly and I'm still being treated for injuries sustained. Still cannot drive.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
