A despicable excuse for an attorney. Very non-professional. Has been disbarred for stealing over 100K of his clients' money. Still steals his clients money with all the unnecessary documents he tricks his clients into filing to prolong the case by several months, even years. Lies and files false documentation. Should be disbarred again!!!

She was so busy talking about her upcoming wedding/dress I'm surprised she even had any time for me. On my sentencing day she was busy making a lunch date with the prosecutor and so I got no warning of how my demeanor might affect the judge I had. I was sentenced to 15 months in prison and learned more about how the legal system works, from the inmates, after being incarcerated then from this supposed professional !!!!

This man will try to leave you penniless and be vindictive as possible. A simple divorce he will drag out. Use excuses such as his wife having a medical treatment to push dates back. He brings everything to trial regardless of how simple and civil you may want to be. He knows that he will get 15k plus for every trial so why not drag it out and line his pocket. He will lie on documents and try to sway the emotions of the court. When you dig into his past he has been a basketball coach who "unwillingly" resigned from his position, another word's he is a perv. When ever he's in court he is very arrogant in his approach and dispectful to the court. How is this man still walking on his own will is beyond me. If you hire him or have to deal with him just know he will drag it out agree to nothing and try to pinch every penny you have. Just understand he's a crook and should not be allowed to continuing to practice law.

Our experience with Dean Zabriskie was very disappointing. The Zabriskie's were very promising and attentive, until they got the retainer check, and then the grand promises began to erode. Phone calls were refused even at previously arranged times. They never once visited to discuss the case or defense strategies, relying on very brief meetings outside the courtroom right before a hearing, and then primarily to demand more money(even though the agreed-upon retainer was promised to be enough to handle the case until resolution). Retaining the Zabriskie's was a terrible mistake and he would not recommend them to anyone.

Dean knows his way around a courtroom and is very good with the judge. However, he proved to be pretty unreliable when it came to keeping me informed. He also didn't keep his word with things he told me he would do. He would ask the judge for time extensions on numerous occasions, so he could do more things, then by the next time we went to court he hadn't don't anything and had to ask for more time. The judge was angry about it. He was able to pull off some things a public defender wouldn't have, but for the price he charges I would not recommend him.

I hired Coby to protect my rights as a father when I filed for divorce. He did a fair enough job in that regard. I was rather impressed at the positive counseling he would give often. However when we got a new commissioner and a few complications came up Coby didn't have the courage to stand up for me and defend my side against the lies and such my ex was alleging. Because of this it resulted in lingering problems lasting several years after the divorce. I should've had the courage to stand up for myself since Coby wouldn't.

They all should be arrested, charged and then have their cases railroaded, just as they schemed to have Luis Sanchez imprisoned despite him wanting to fight his case, and your lack there of, as his own attorney. Refused to give me my case files (discovery) for months, lied he was going to give them repeatedly on recorded phone calls with him, was an active public defender on my case while his license to practice in Utah was under suspension due to non payment of his license fees, refused to consult with me when he took it on his own to withdraw a motion for a change of plea, refused to reply/respond to the Office of Professional Conduct when my complaints brought him under their investigation. In a spring 2021 hearing by the panel of the Utah Supreme Court of Conduct and Ethics he basically laughed at him having been summoned there, stopped laughing when the Utah Supreme Court of Ethics and Conduct found all allegations of mine to be factual when they sentenced him (again-see 2015 case aswell) to a public reprimand. Greg Stewart is now happily under the wing of the Juab County, Utah Public Pretender's office, likely active in violating more clients, going for the 3rd reprimand.

I hired Mr.Bray to represent me in my divorce, based on statements and suggestions he made at our initial interview/consultation. However, once he got my retainer he filed no temporary motions he talked about, drafted no countersuit as indicated he would, and completely vanished with no responses for 2 weeks before labor day when I needed advice going into mediation. When finally managed to locate him through Overson & Sheen to verify he still worked there, he offered no explanation and scheduled a meeting the following week. He did not address any of my concerns at that meeting, in fact he was still unprepared for mediation issues the day before it was scheduled. I was lucky enough to retain competent representation for my divorce proceeding and release Mr. Bray as my attorney. I have asked repeatedly for an itemized accounting of his services against my retainer and have yet to get one. My mistake, this man did nothing for me, just took my money. Later found out he was disciplined by the state licensing authority for similar poor performance!

A friend and myself went to Walmart and my friend ended up taking a few items without paying, I was angry that he was going to do that and walked away. Of course Walmart security was on top of it and charged both of us with retail theft... I don’t believe Mr. Nash was prepared for my case at all. My friend who actually stole (who Nash also defended) got a lesser sentence than I did. I want to appeal this case bec now retail theft is on my record and I didn’t steal anything and I’m paying thousands of dollars currently to go to school. I’m really upset with the outcome and I want to appeal but I don’t have the money to pay for another public defender (who I thought were free?). I believe I had almost 5 minutes of consultation with Nash, this was my first offense, I had no idea what I was doing so when he said “just plea guilty and I’ll take care of it,” I believed he would have my best interests in mind.... Maybe he was having a bad day or something but I don’t feel that Adam Nash cared at all about me or my case and now my financial and mental states are worse off for it.

I hired Brian A. Taylor, now with Ascent Law LLC to help reduce my child support. I provided him with all my evidence (job applications, denials, tax filings, current income, my debt, my financial declaration, you name it. As an experienced family lawyer, you're supposed to share those evidence with the court and opposing lawyer. Brian claimed to have reviewed my documents and charged me for it, but failed to to send evidence to the court. He did my case back in 2016. Took 10 months for a simple divorce. For a whole month, he did not do anything or work on my case. On the 8th month, he tells me to go to do the divorce class which he should have told me that the very first month of filing. He does not work with a paralegal so he did all the paperwork which was more expensive that way. Do NOT waste your time and money with Jere. We hired him to represent us in a DCFS case, not a divorce. Regardless, he absolutely does not have the best interest of his clients whatsoever, and puts in zero effort. Even with the smallest, easiest things such as asking our judge a very simple question regarding visitation, he did not ask because that would require he actually do something! Every meeting with him did not include conversation regarding our case, only conversation about our family member he romantically obsessed over. The final straw was when he made us completely miss our hearing because he was too lazy to set up his computer ahead of time then blamed it on “routine internet problems.” Even if there was internet problems (which idk how that’s possible when he didn’t even have a computer turned on) he was 20 minutes late, and showed no hustle when I told him everyone was waiting on him! We finally fired him after that. He then sent us an invoice which did not AT ALL match the price we agreed on. Not only did he put double the time he actually spent, he charged us for TEXTING. Even when he was the one who text us to see how things are going. He is lazy, and crooked. Don’t make the same mistake we did by giving him the benefit of the doubt. Take the advice from his reviews and find an attorney who actually has your best interest.

An extremely poor lawyer. She advised me not to follow part of my divorce agreement, stating repeatedly that it wasn't important and the judge wouldn't require me to have followed it, which resulted in my case being thrown out with all the financial costs that go with that. She failed to make even one simple legal argument to the judge as to why I didn't have to follow. She either is too inept to understand what a judge will enforce, or was colluding with opposing counsel to toss the case.

We hired Ben to go after a woman that bought our company and stopped paying. We should have known he wasn’t qualified when the first letter he sent on our behalf was completely wrong!! He obviously didn’t even read up on our case to send an embarrassing letter like that. He never fixed it, told us he sent other letters but we never saw them. We were locked out of my case so there was no proof of anything. He is impossible to get a hold of. He does not return phone calls text or emails! We finally got so fed up we contacted the person we are suing and she said he won’t return her attorneys calls and emails either and that they have not received the paperwork he told us he sent. If you’re contemplating using Ben Grindstaff I suggest you save your money and find an honest competent attorney who will actually work for you and not just steal your money and run! We want a refund and will do whatever needs to be done to get it. The Utah bar association and BBB will be hearing from us!

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
