I met Jonathan roughly 10 years ago. I walked into the courtroom with him, and I walked out of the courtroom with him, just as he said I would. Jonathan has represented me twice. And twice, we have been victorious. We have developed a great relationship. Not only is Jonathan a superb attorney, he is a great friend and confidant to me. I have him on retainer for a rainy day.

Mr. Long represented me when I was named as a Co-defendent in my ex-husbands mortgage foreclosure proceeding. I have been divorced for more than five years so this came as a surprise to me and it required a very quick turn around in the initial response. I am also living well outside of the region where this proceeding is occurring so it required that we handle everything electronically. Mr. Long quickly reviewed my case and very clearly outlined what I needed to do with specific time frames. Mr. Long provided much needed clarity and a sense of calm to an extremely stressful situation. Mr. Long was very sensitive to handling everything via secure electronic delivery which granted me more peace of mind. Mr. Long successfully achieved getting me dismissed from the case and I would highly recommend him for legal services.

I used Mr. Long for a divorce/child custody case already in progress. He was well organized, informative, willing to listen and follow up on my questions and concerns. Mr. Long made a difficult situation understandable by patiently explaining my options. He was prompt getting back to me via email and phone. He welcomed any imput regarding my case and investigated all possibilities that I suggested. Mr. Long and his staff were personable and efficient. If you want a lawyer who is educated and willing to work with you, Mr. Olivier Denier Long is the best attorney for the case. I would definetly retain Mr. Long again if I had the need for an attorney.

From the initial conversation until the end of my court case, Mr. Cooper was extremely professional, courteous, empathetic, patient, knowledgeable and a man of immediate action. He is very clear, concise, trustworthy, well connected and detailed when outlining his expectations to assist me in making my case easier to expedite. Before meeting Mr Cooper, I was extremely confused with my case and so many parties involved but he made each step seamless the moment he took over. He was easy to reach at any time and was thorough in his explanations. At the end of the day, he ensured that all parties were satisfied, understood the specifics as well s even followed up afterwards. I would highly recommend Mr Cooper to anyone that is seeking a true professional that knows their craft inside and out!

Mr. Ahmed has been a mentor to me for the last 2 years. Given his almost 3 decades of experience in litigation, I often turn to him for input on my own cases and have found his input very valuable. I have found that across the board, from Judges to Attorneys to court staff, Mr. Ahmed is highly respected as an attorney and personally well regarded. He is among the top tier of attorneys I would turn to if I had the need.

Mr. Ahmed was retained for my friend who was subject to an unwarranted search of his vehicle. Without being too detailed, it was a case of police harrassment/profiling. Items were seized from my friend in an attempt to portray him as being someone he was not. In summation, Mr. Ahmed proved my friend's innocence and all charges were dropped. He is well respected by Judges as well as fellow Attorneys. We have retained him to have the seized items returned. He is just OUTSTANDING!!!

I contacted three lawyers for my case and he was the only one that sat down and actually talked about my case and reviewed the evidence I had. He sat down and went over the jury instructions with me and went over a convincing outline as to why the evidence didn't support the charges and how he would approach the case. He also gave a very thoughtful and appropriate prognosis of what may or may not possibly happen with my case. Didn't take him long to get my charges dismissed either, though had it not panned out that way I though he would do a good job if the case had gone to trial.

20 years ago (1994) Barry saved my job at Georgetown University. I was since promoted and received several employee commendations. I retired from the university in 2003 and as a result of the staff benefits package, my son who was 5 years old at the time, received the dependent tuition. He graduated this month from the University of Maryland with honors. Although I have not spoken to Barry in over twenty years, I credit his wisdom, intelligence and fortitude for making this all possible for me, my wife Faith and Zach. We will be forever greatful. Barry helped me to save my son's life. He so well represented him in our legal case; but, that was only a part of his excellence. He helped my son to survive with his knowlege of psychology , his compassion, caring and support, so my son did not act on his suicide thoughts. Barry helped him to maintain his drug sobriety through an incredibly difficult and painful legal case. My son was suicidal from the angst of this case which required my son to look back at his years of child abuse and then into his past drug addiction. Barry worked with my son, my son's psychologist and with me to get through this ordeal. Barry followed through perfectly and quickly on any matter that needed attention. I never had to wait for a response in those difficult months which spanned well over a year. Quite an accomplishment! He developed positive relationships with the prosecution and kept things on as even keel as possible. I highly recommend Barry and am grateful to have found him.

I had a speeding and a DUI charge for blowing 0.08, the national limit, in Washington DC, a district known for it's alcohol zero tolerance, yet they want us to spend our hard earned money in their establishments. Anyhow, Mr. Opai looked for my best interest and worked hard tirelessly, even when they dropped my speeding charge, to get me a better deal. I'm very please to have had him as my lawyer and would hire him again in a heartbeat. He's an honest, hard working, smart and an eloquent man. I just hope I won't have to hire him again :) I know he has a unique and a different sounding name, so did Pres. Barak Obama when we first got to hear about him, but It's not so unusual anymore. Exlaining the deatails in short sight but really only having one train of thought as to how the case and the outcome would be.(Their way).Mr Buckner was cut from a different cloth in not only being able to have the have the legal mind to interperet the law but also being able to have the presiding jurist to take note and acknoweldge Mr Buckner's ability to lay out his case.Being a person who actually enjoys the whole law and litigation procedure I enjoyed watching Mr Buckner work. I had my home raided because a roommate was smoking marijuana and my life came to an end when I was arrested a week later and charged with Felony Trafficking of Narcotics and Possession of an Assault Rifle during a Drug Trafficking crime, among a dozen other charges. I was just about to graduate from Maryland and I was facing 46 years, and had all of my legally purchased firearms, and my substantial life savings ripped out of my safe and taken because the Gaithersburg Police had found an unlabeled prescription bottle of Adderall and a few other substances in the house, mostly in other people's rooms. I thought that best case scenario, I get 3 years even though I was innocent. While I cannot get too far into the details as of this review version, take my word that the scenario was really damning. That's when a friend referred me to Jeff, who people have always said to be your best shot at winning, especially if return of property is also sought. The moment I first met with Jeff (statutes in hand) and saw how completely prepared and confident he was, I felt like I my odds had changed for the better. He is Ultra dedicated to what he does and researches the laws far more thoroughly than any other attorney I have had and will blow holes in the arguments and strategies of the best Montgomery County prosecutors, immediately and directly calling them out on every slip up they make to hurt you, and also foreseeing the mistakes they will make that will help your case. Not only did he get the charges wiped out despite the shady maneuvering by the state (recharging me multiple times and changing the charges), but he had my property and all of the currency RETURNED TO ME by quickly putting up a wall against their civil forfeiture case. In more cases than this one, he has been an attorney that practically pays for himself in what he gets you back! But again, the most important thing to me and anyone charged is first to prevent prosecution and second to walk you through the legal gauntlet unscathed. For this, he was also terrific. Jeff took my calls no matter when and where and when I had a bench warrant for an unrelated traffic matter during this case and that attorney was not answering my calls, Jeff made calls and motions and had the warrant quashed in 24 hours so I didn't have to step foot in a jail. He will be handle your case very personally and literally come out to aid you in getting affidavit evidence, or receiving property in person, preventing the authorities from giving you the run-around! I know two other people who have been represented by Jeff, one of them also a Defense attorney, and all of whom walked. I agree with them that unlike other attorney's, like the ones who send you letters, Jeff doesn't look for pleas to take, he fights! I'm not sure how he would like me re-coining a phrase like 'Just Call Jeff' because he is such a professional, but if you have big charges and you want the best outcome, you will thank yourself for bringing his top-shelf representation.

My case kept stalling which made my mother worry and my family including me. But having more confidence in this lawyer who happens to be from NC as well!. But yes I just pray to have this case dismissed I just want to stay here in the south with my family. My only reason to visit up there was because of an old relationship I rushed into so it was a major mistake even moving away from my family like that so that she could be with her’s we never managed good enough with things so that’s why I left her to go back to my own family. So again as she said NJ is crazy and not to ever visit on the phone I agree with is bc she knows how blessed I am and set up to live here with family vs being alone up north and know anyone at all so again I just pray this case gets worked out and Diane Will be the MVP of All Agents!! About 100 armed government agents descended on our several locations early one morning with search warrants in hand. They later claimed to have found enough to shut down the company and put the officers in jail. Over the course of the next year, Mike was there for us whenever needed in phone conferences and in person. He stayed in very close contact with the government and was able to head-off many undesirable outcomes during the year. For us, this was among Mike's most valuable assets-knowing who to contact on the government side and making the most of those contacts. He got our side fully prepared for various court appearances and was almost solely responsible for a much more favorable outcome than anyone had predicted. We have dealt with other law firms, and in our opinion Mike is and his team are at the very top of their profession. Mike has absolutely cracked the code on how to get the very best possible deal that could ever be obtained from the government, so the company's officers still have their freedom and the company is still in business. Mike has an incredible breadth and depth of experience on both sides of the law and uses it to its full extent to get the best outcome for his client.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
