They lie they don’t return your phone calls when you’re trying to initiate a new claim. They only want cases were people were dying or car was totally totaled. Very rude people.

When Josh came onto my case, I was an emotional, scared client who had experienced a traumatic & complicated wrongful termination. Not only did he demonstrate an incredible understanding of the law & a tactical supremacy (on more than one occasion, he made the defense absolutely defenseless), he immediately put my mind at ease by explaining why it was important to fight this case. He has a perspective on justice that exceeds monetary compensation and that was something that made me feel really comfortable. Wrongful termination is a traumatic experience, and it was so refreshing to have someone in my corner who wasn't just fighting for a monetary outcome, but truly looking to make a difference in my life and preventing the same thing from happening to someone else. I would recommend Josh to anyone who finds themself in need of an employment lawyer!

Josh was referred to me by another attorney. Essentially my case revolved around a mid-2020 cancel culture event with my employer. This resulted in my wrongful termination along with Josh unpacking a number of other claims as we sifted through my almost four years of employment. My understanding was that the employer, over the years, had mistreated me. Josh knew the law and precedents that tied to the mistreatment. The list of claims was long. At its core, my case was about an employer that irrationally reacted to a troll site post on social media tied to a post from me. While the company had invited everyone to share ideas, because it declared it was open to receiving ideas, I posted a further sharing of conservative ideas. This did not suit the political views of the employer. Not only was I wrongfully terminated, but the employer also defamed me in the process. After almost a year of pre-trial litigation, Josh was able to secure a very good outcome that resulted in an excellent economic settlement and resolution of non-monetary issues. Josh cared about my non-monetary issues and not just the financial settlement. That meant a lot to me As a business executive for 25 years, I understood the unpredictable nature of litigation. Josh and the firm, at EVERY step of the way, navigated the case to its successful conclusion. Thank you, Josh, for everything!!

I hired Mr. Urbanic and his team for a wrongful termination/sexual harassment issue and I am able to now enjoy the fruits of his labor. I was able to trust Mr. Urbanic and his team throughout the process and I always felt that I was in good hands. Mr. Urbanic was always willing to take time to speak to me and explain the stages of the lawsuit which put me at ease. The attention that Mr. Urbanic and his team gave to even the most miniscule of details left me impressed. Mr. Urbanic was able to tear the opposing side's defense piece by piece, it was truly incredible to watch. Mr. Urbanic is tough and fearless against his opponents, he's everything I imagined a highly-skilled and seasoned attorney would be and much more!

I’m writing this, 1 year after my lawsuit, and I’m still in awe of what James was able to accomplish for me. I’m beyond satisfied with the end result to my case, and I want to commend James for his dedication to me and to my case and for everything he was able to do for me. I can say with honesty that I’m not sure where I would be if it were not for him and his team. From the very start of our case, I witnessed James and his team fight for me from beginning to end and I will never, ever forget that. I highly recommend James Urbanic to anybody who is looking for an outstandingly talented lawyer.

I was so beaten down and depressed from the complex wrongful termination from my work, that it was difficult for me to explain to James what happened to me. But I knew strongly in my heart that it was wrong the way that I was treated by my place of work. So with James kindness and patience, experience, and being knowledgeable and an expert in his field, I felt like I could relax, and that I was safe and protected because I was in good hands, and I could trust him explicitly. My case was very complex and James and his Team were experts with gathering and organizing my information. James explained things clearly to me and I was well prepared for my depositions. He was always available. In his depositions of the defendants, he was able to uncover the discriminating information that helped us favorably. It was awesome and reassuring to see how well respected James is in his field. Seeing how well respected he is helped me realize I had definitely made the right choice. But it is just one of the ways. James is so smart and perceptive and is really the Best at what he does!! I will forever be grateful to James for his caring and expert work. I feel very blessed to have had him for my attorney and I will highly recommend him to others that want the BEST help with Employment Law cases. Very Sincerely Grateful Client

I am so honored and delighted to write a review for the best attorney that I know and that person is Dmitriy Cherepinskiy. I thank God for him. He helped me with a wrongful death case against a nursing home that involved severe neglect and bedsores. Because of him we got justice. He will guide you through the process from the beginning to the very end. He treats you as if it was his family. He is very personable. And I can honestly say I felt he really cared about us and the situation. Dmitriy is very professional and will answer your calls and if he cannot at the moment he will get back with you in a timely matter. You cannot go wrong with him. I not only gained an attorney but a friend like family to me. I will always cherish his advice and encouragement.. It touches my heart to know that there are good honest people out there. Trust me Dmitriy is the real deal. And that is so hard to find in a law firm these days. Thank you Dmitriy from the bottom of my heart. Many blessings to you and your family.

Dmitriy was absolutely sensational in this wrongful death, bedsore suit with my Father in law.Dmitriy was like communicating to a family member. When I was looking for a Lawyer for taking on my Father in law's wrongful death, bedsore suit. I contacted other Law firms which was useless saying they can't take on cases like mine and did not call me but emailed me saying they could not take my case but the only one who called me in a couple of days was Dmitriy. This man is truly committed in his profession for doing the best for his clients.I'm so grateful that I spoke to him.Even though I had made other calls Dmitriy talked to me like we were long time friends that I knew already. My case started in 2/2024 & we settled on 8/2024.Dmitriy the Professional he gave me options but the settlement he was able to settle out of court was outstanding.I truly recommend Dmitriy and his law firm.If you want a person who is passionate & very client supportive he is definitely the person to handle your case. Dmitriy is a very class guy where you definitely can't go wrong.

Parth Shah was assigned to my employment case; I was wrongfully terminated and I didn't know my rights. Parth Shah worked hard to get the best possible settlement for me. He kept me informed and updated and he answered all the questions I had; and I had a lot of questions. He was patient with me and made sure I understood everything. I felt that he cared about my situation and it helped to ease the stress I had. I am satisfied with the outcome and I would recommend Parth Shah to my friends and family in case they ever need an attorney.

Parth was an attorney assigned to my employment case. He did a great job of keeping me informed of the process, relevant communication, and potential outcomes. As I tend to ask a lot of questions, he was always very patient and informative. When dealing with a legal matter, it's important to establish that trust, which he did very early in my case, and he provided the confidence I needed to move forward.

I was put on the streets so I could not fight a case against police when the police illegally impounded my RV I was living in. I was getting harassed everyday by them, now homeless until I was able to put enough money together and bought a truck. 2 weeks after buying this truck outright from dealer for $3000, I was pulled over for no reason. It was literally just so they could impound my brand new truck again and keep me on the street homeless. I spent all I had on truck so I could not get it out of impound and they sold it at auction leaving me homeless with nothing once again. Completely unaware that the cops actually wrote a ticket for this incident, I missed the court date because of them leaving me homeless with nothing for the second time and can’t get mail. They are charging me with misdemeanor drug possession, misdemeanor possession of tear gas. Like wtf (I had a can of pepper spray on a keychain under the seat. There also was no drugs so no paraphernalia want to plead not guilty and fight the case but I don’t want to lose my bed at homeless shelter by going to jail until court date. How can I do this?

Mr. Maroko was my Family Law Attorney more that 30 years ago advising and helping me in matters related to child custody and child support. Although his practice has expanded far beyond what my needs were back then I just wanted to say in reflection these many years later how his honesty, ethics, and skill in the courtroom resolved satisfactorily what was best for my baby daughter. He always put the best interest of my daughter first. And the best advice he ever gave me as a single parent was, "Never Lie To Your Child, because if you do you will undermine your child's trust in you, and then who can your child trust?" And, "never speak badly of your child's father to your child because that will only create unnecessary conflict for your child." Thank you Mr. Michael Maroko for putting me on the right path as a single parent so many years ago which I believe contributed to the successes in my daughter's life today. I have no doubt you are still the same honest and ethical attorney today as you were with me over 30 years ago. I''m sure whoever enlists your services today in the areas of law you now practice will not be disappointed!

My co-workers and I weren’t being paid correctly. We all had a sense of something wrong, but couldn’t quite pin down the details. Without the details, we saw no way of clarifying the pay questions. However, separately, we asked our employer about this, in case there was a mistake or some other explanation. None was offered. Most of us, including myself, found better employment. Some of us kept in contact discussing the former employer’s actions wondering if there was some solution such as State involvement. Labor Board, etc. Even though I didn’t have a lot of research time, I found “Ackermann & Tilajef, P.C.” After the first consultation, I told many of my friends and former co-workers. Turned out that we had a class-action law suit. Working with Craig Ackermann, Mike Malk, The paralegals, and all their excellent interns, was more than a business relationship for me. It was an excellent educational experience. The lessons I’ve learned are as valuable as the compensation they recovered. One valuable lesson is the machinations some employers continually go through to rip off their employees. I ask: “Isn’t it cheaper to obey the law, pay what you’re obligated to, rather than pay company lawyers?” The answer is obviously: “No.” However, with Craig, Mike, and their associates. Such employers might reconsider their legal strategies. Like, obey the laws in the first place. I am very grateful to Craig. You didn’t just get compensation for me and my co-workers. You got us our confidence back, knowing that someone’s watching out for the working folk.

Natasha took over of my case half way through. It should be a simple one when the parts sit and agree on something. It never happened, so Natasha came for the final round(s) and she kicked ass. Her energy was the best, always positive. I never felt intimidated during the meetings when she was next to me. Thank you Natasha Chesler.

Tony has a great analytical mind and a unique perspective when it comes to the law. I had the pleasure of working with him a few years ago on the East Coast. He is a classical debater, very strategic in his approach and methodical when it comes to moving his opponent to his position. All of that and a heart of gold makes Tony an attorney that you want in your corner. When the good guys win it's because they have good fighters on their side, and Tony is one of the best!

Great attorney. This attorney not only has great trial experience, he is very knowledgeable. Many attorneys go to him for advise. I would suggest picking him because he cares and works hard. My case hasn't even come to court yet so im not basing this on being paid.

What a Discrimination Lawyer Can Do for You

A discrimination lawyer specializes in handling cases where individuals or groups face unfair treatment based on protected characteristics, such as race, gender, age, religion, national origin, disability, or sexual orientation. These lawyers assist clients in filing discrimination claims, representing them in legal proceedings, and ensuring that their rights under federal, state, and local laws are upheld. Discrimination cases may arise in employment, housing, education, public accommodations, or other settings.

Whether you’ve been discriminated against at work, denied housing, or treated unfairly in other areas of life, a discrimination lawyer can help you navigate the legal process and seek compensation or corrective action.

When Should I Hire a Discrimination Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a discrimination lawyer in several situations where unfair treatment occurs based on protected characteristics. Common scenarios include:

  • Employment Discrimination:
    • Workplace discrimination: If you’ve been treated unfairly at work because of your race, gender, disability, religion, age, sexual orientation, or another protected status, a lawyer can help you file a claim with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) or a similar state agency.
    • Wrongful termination: If you were fired due to discrimination or retaliation for reporting discriminatory behavior, a lawyer can assist with filing a lawsuit and seeking compensation for lost wages, emotional distress, and other damages.
    • Failure to promote: If you’ve been denied a promotion or opportunities due to discriminatory practices, a lawyer can investigate the claim and represent you in legal actions against your employer.
    • Harassment: If you’ve experienced workplace harassment, such as sexual harassment or a hostile work environment based on your race, gender, or other characteristics, a lawyer can help you pursue legal remedies.
  • Housing Discrimination:
    • Denial of housing: If you’ve been denied housing due to your race, disability, family status, or other protected factors, a lawyer can help you file a complaint with the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) or sue the landlord or property manager for violating the Fair Housing Act.
    • Unfair rental practices: If a landlord or property manager treats you unfairly based on discriminatory factors (e.g., refusing reasonable accommodations for a disability), a lawyer can help you enforce your rights.
  • Education Discrimination:
    • Discrimination in schools: If you or your child has faced discrimination in an educational setting based on race, disability, gender, or religion, a lawyer can help you file complaints under laws like Title VI, Title IX, or the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
  • Public Accommodations:
    • Denial of services: If a business or public service has discriminated against you based on race, gender, disability, or other protected characteristics, a lawyer can assist you in filing a complaint or lawsuit under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) or other anti-discrimination laws.

Hiring a discrimination lawyer early can help protect your rights and ensure that your claim is filed within legal deadlines.

What Does a Discrimination Lawyer Do?

A discrimination lawyer provides a range of legal services to help individuals and groups fight against discriminatory practices. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Filing discrimination claims: A lawyer can help you file a complaint with government agencies, such as the EEOC, HUD, or your state’s human rights commission. They ensure that your claim is properly documented and filed within required time limits.
  • Investigating discrimination claims: Discrimination lawyers gather evidence, interview witnesses, and review documents to build a strong case for proving discriminatory practices.
  • Negotiating settlements: In many cases, a lawyer can negotiate a settlement with the employer, landlord, or other party involved in the discrimination case, seeking compensation or corrective action without going to trial.
  • Representing clients in court: If your case goes to court, a lawyer will represent you during hearings, present evidence, and argue your case before a judge or jury.
  • Handling retaliation claims: If you face retaliation for filing a discrimination complaint or reporting discriminatory practices, a lawyer can help you pursue a retaliation claim.
  • Advising on legal rights: A discrimination lawyer explains your legal rights under federal and state anti-discrimination laws, such as Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, the ADA, the Fair Housing Act, and others.

How Are Discrimination Lawyers Paid?

Discrimination lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the expected duration of the legal process. Common payment structures include:

  • Contingency fee: Many discrimination lawyers work on a contingency fee basis, meaning they only get paid if they win or settle the case. Their fee is usually a percentage of the settlement or court award, typically ranging from 25% to 40%.
  • Hourly rate: For cases that don’t involve a contingency fee arrangement, some lawyers charge by the hour. Hourly rates for discrimination lawyers generally range from $200 to $600 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and the case’s complexity.
  • Flat fee: For simpler legal tasks, such as drafting a discrimination complaint or providing legal advice, some lawyers may charge a flat fee.
  • Pro bono or reduced fees: Some discrimination lawyers offer pro bono (free) or reduced-fee services, especially in cases involving low-income clients or significant civil rights issues.

It’s important to discuss fee arrangements during your initial consultation to ensure that you understand the total cost of legal services and how payment will be handled.

How Much Does a Discrimination Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a discrimination lawyer depends on factors like the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the potential for a settlement or trial. General cost estimates include:

  • Contingency fees: If the lawyer works on a contingency basis, their fee will typically range from 25% to 40% of any settlement or court award. For example, if you win a settlement of $50,000 and the lawyer’s fee is 30%, they would receive $15,000, and you would keep the remaining $35,000.
  • Hourly rates: Discrimination lawyers who charge by the hour typically bill between $200 and $600 per hour. For example, a case that takes 20 hours of legal work at $300 per hour would cost $6,000 in legal fees.
  • Flat fees: Some legal services, such as filing a discrimination complaint or providing a legal consultation, may be available for a flat fee ranging from $500 to $2,500, depending on the complexity of the task.
  • Pro bono or sliding scale fees: In some cases, particularly for low-income individuals, lawyers may offer reduced fees or work pro bono.

Always ask for a detailed estimate of costs during your consultation, and clarify whether the lawyer offers flexible payment options.

Top Questions to Ask a Discrimination Lawyer

Before hiring a discrimination lawyer, it’s important to ask key questions to ensure they have the experience and qualifications to handle your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with discrimination cases?
Ensure that the lawyer has handled discrimination cases similar to yours, whether it involves employment, housing, or public accommodation discrimination.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a contingency fee, hourly rate, or flat fee, and ask for a detailed breakdown of costs.
  3. What are my chances of success?
Ask the lawyer for an honest assessment of your case, including potential challenges and the likelihood of success.
  4. How long will the process take?
Discrimination cases can take time to resolve, so ask the lawyer how long they expect the process to take, from filing a complaint to reaching a settlement or going to trial.
  5. Will I need to go to court?
Ask whether your case is likely to settle out of court or if a trial may be necessary. If a trial is possible, ask what steps the lawyer will take to prepare.
  6. What damages or remedies can I seek?
Ask about the types of compensation or corrective action you can pursue, such as back pay, emotional distress damages, job reinstatement, or policy changes.
  7. What steps should I take to protect my rights?
Ask for advice on how to document evidence, handle workplace or housing interactions, and avoid retaliation while your case is pending.

How to Check the Credibility of a Discrimination Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable discrimination lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Check their bar status: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice law and in good standing with the state bar association. You can check this on your state bar’s website.
  • Look for discrimination case experience: Review the lawyer’s website or profile to ensure they specialize in employment law, civil rights, or discrimination cases and have successfully handled similar cases in the past.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about their experience with the lawyer.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on discrimination matters.
  • Check for certifications or memberships: Look for certifications or memberships in civil rights organizations or employment law associations, such as the National Employment Lawyers Association (NELA).

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a discrimination lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Detailed account of the discrimination: Provide a clear description of the discriminatory actions, including dates, locations, and individuals involved. Document specific incidents and any witnesses who can support your claim.
  • Workplace or housing records: Bring copies of relevant employment or housing documents, such as job performance evaluations, rental agreements, emails, or written correspondence related to the discrimination.
  • Company or organization policies: If the discrimination occurred in the workplace or housing, bring copies of company policies, employee handbooks, or housing agreements that outline anti-discrimination policies.
  • Evidence of damages: Provide evidence of any financial losses, such as lost wages, job termination, or increased rent, as well as emotional or psychological distress caused by the discrimination.
  • Previous complaints or actions: If you’ve filed previous complaints or taken any action related to the discrimination, such as reporting the issue to HR or filing a complaint with a government agency, bring copies of those documents.
  • Questions about the process: Prepare a list of questions about your legal options, potential outcomes, and the lawyer’s approach to handling your case.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your situation more effectively and provide the best possible legal advice for pursuing your discrimination claim.
