I recently obtained counsel from David Haskett at this firm. I have to say, I would recommend him highly. He helped me thru a difficult experience and did a fantastic job for me and with wonderful results. He was compassionate, but honest with his advice and listened to me and my needs. I really appreciated that. If you need a great attorney, please call David Haskett.

I had a very serious issue with the courts and I needed someone who could get in front of a judge immediately and have an order ammendee as I didn’t have a case number yet it was very hard to get information and u also had very little resources. Kelly was compassionate kind and thorough and did what he could for me to get the matter resolved in my favor expeditiously. He listens very well and it is clear that he really cares about his clients. Once I talked with him I felt much more calm and assured and when we went to court things went as well as I believe they possibly could have. I also have severe ADHD and was very stressed when I was speaking with him and he was very kind and understanding with like my quirks and interruptions while being able to keep my on point and related the information I needed effectively to me in that state. I cannot recommend Kelly Monaghan enough. He is obviously extremely sharp about the law and will fight hard for his clients but he also is just a very good human overall! Thanks Kelly!

Susan Ford helped me prepare for a small claims case (where I represented my company) for a customer that sued us for nearly $5,000. Before hiring Susan I had checked with two other lawyers but I did not feel confident. Susan helped with both the mediation and the final court hearing. With her knowledge in my brain, I was able to make a clear and coherent explanation of events. The judge decided the case in my favor. I recommend Res Nova for anyone dealing with business issues in Oregon.

In the end we had the best outcome possible. We are very please with the work that Jared did for us, and we will be referring everyone we know who needs the service to him. After trying to flee from someone threatening to kill me and my loved ones in my truck at what was supposed to be a family birthday party, I was wrongfully arrested for a DUII. I spoke with several firms and then I found Casey Baxter with Baxter Law online and saw the reviews so I decided to give them a call for a consultation. Immediately I could tell his attitude towards my case was what I was looking for. All of the other firms I talked to suggested diversion because it was “less risky”. I didn’t want that on my record if I was able to defend it. Well when I talked to Casey he didn’t constantly tell me how great he was like the other firms. He gave me his (very qualified)credentials and actually gave me the process of how he would go about this case and I could tell he wasn’t afraid to defend my case. Choosing him to be my lawyer was the best decision I could’ve made. He spoke with the DA on my case and was able to get the whole thing dismissed before my court date. This firm knows the law and isn’t afraid to fight for you. If you go with them you can feel taken care of. I will 100% recommend Casey and Baxter Law.

100 percent. That's how much every person in the building gave. They made me feel like I was the only client. From the receptionist, to Casey himself, I felt that they truly cared and could tell that I was not just a client but that I actually mattered. The saying goes that you get for what you pay for, and not only did I get the best legal representation, I got so much more; people who actually care. Not only would I recommend them to anyone i cared about, if I ever need future assistance in a matter I know I can count on Casey and the entire Baxter law team to help.

You never know what will come up, and you may need a lawyer to talk to; Casey’s firm will help you no matter the time of day. There was no part of me that ever wanted to meet Jody or Anna. None! As a 20 year marriage was ending I started asking around for names of attorneys. I didn't have a clue where to start. But, there was one firm that came up several times from people I trusted - Stahancyk, Kent and Hook. I consulted with several firms before SKH and saved them for last. The old adage, save the best for last? Ask Jody or Anna their theory on how you capture a monkey. Hilarious and and so wise. It was at that story, I said... Yes, they are the total for me. They KNOW the law. But, more important that that - THEY UNDERSTAND PEOPLE! By the grace of God I didn't need near as much representation as I thought I would. It was peaceful. From the very beginning Anna Friedhoff spoke candidly and truthfully with me. There were several times she needed to remind that I hired her because she is the professional. I am a strong woman and wanted to run the show. Oopsy! She gently but firmly guided me through it. When it became apparent the divorce was going to be amicable she saved me tens of thousand of dollars in fees. I bullet pointed out what I need/wanted. She drafted, we went back and forth with a few revisions. I even received a refund on my retainer fee!!! I hesitate to mention the swiftness of my divorce as I am fully aware it is not a normal pace. I met Anna Friedhoff on a Wednesday, she had the petition filed by that Friday, September 10th and Clackamas county judge signed our divorce decree October 19th. Yes, I was divorced in 6 weeks. You are in good and caring hands with this firm.

I’m giving Anna Friedhoff 5 stars as a divorce attorney, only because I can’t give 6 stars. Anna is the best attorney in Oregon, and if you’re in the unfortunate position of divorce, she needs to be your first and only call. Anna is an absolute MONSTER of an attorney. She is brilliant, passionate, aggressive, and an all around badass. If anything else, simply hire her to ensure she’s never looking at you from the other side of the courtroom. I promise you, the last name you want to see on the opposing counsel team is Anna Friedhoff. While we dealt with Covid, and unexpected delays, Anna never took her eyes off the prize. She fought for me and she won every single motion we entered into. Hiring Anna Friedhoff as my divorce attorney was the best decision I’ve ever made in my life. If you are reading this review PLEASE do yourself a favor, stop immediately, pick up the phone and call her. Anna Friedhoff = WIN

The only thing worse than a custody battle is a custody battle throughout Covid. The courts were a nightmare and the process was so broken. With all of that said, Jonathan Corey guided me through it with poise, grace, patience, and professionalism. Without his guidance I cannot imagine how I would have gotten through it all. It was clear from the start that I could trust Jonathan throughout the process. Whenever anything seemed dire, he was able to calm my nerves by knowing the best play to lead with or react with. My situation was more complicated than usual, and I needed a well-experienced attorney who I could trust to leave my case in his hand. When I had to make a tough decision, he always gave me great advice and ensured that it would benefit me now and in the far future. Having someone who could look after you and remind you to hold your ground in emotional situations like this was essential during the case and I cannot thank him enough for what he has done for me and my son. I’m so happy I found him and worked with him. I strongly recommend him to anyone going through a tough time in life and wants to ensure that you are in good hands. Mr.Corey is ‘the one.’

Eleven months ago, we found ourselves in the middle of an absolute nightmare when our son was falsely accused of a crime that he did not commit; he was the victim. David Terry walked us through every step of the legal process, he communicated extensively with us, and he advocated for our son every step of the way. We cannot say enough good things about the way that he represented our son. David was available days, nights, and weekends, and he fully supported taking a family/team approach to the case. His extensive experience, effective strategies, vast knowledge of the law, and relentless commitment to the truth, gave us the positive outcome that we desired for our son. We highly recommend David Terry to anyone who really needs someone to listen to them, and to fight for justice on their behalf. After having had unpleasant consults with other lawyers who couldn't seem to wrap their heads around the idea that two women might be married and getting a divorce, it was important to me to find a lawyer who understood the queer community and London was that lawyer. She handled my divorce case and was indispensable in helping me get my kids back after my ex absconded with them and filed a baseless restraining order to prevent me from seeing them for more than a few hours a month under close supervision. She skillfully litigated the restraining order matter, even getting my ex to testify that she had no actual concerns about me that would warrant the order's restrictions. We were able to get a 50/50 parenting plan agreed to within a couple days of a judge dismissing the entire restraining order. As my ex continued to throw up roadblocks to avoid the even split we'd talked about, London was able to handle all of them and her priority was always ensuring equity and the wellbeing of my kids rather than resorting to petty tactics or advising that we respond to my ex's roadblocks with escalation. We were able to settle and avoid going to trial, but I know that if we had ended up going to trial, I would have been in good hands.

From my initial phone conference with London through the whole daunting divorce process, I felt heard and supported. London told me more than once that she was my advocate, and she followed through with that. She supported me in my decisions after presenting all legal angles and possible outcomes. She wanted the best for me. When I was in doubt about various issues, London was able to see through the muddle and had a positive outlook on my overall outcome. She always made me feel like I was her only client. When it came to mediation, London chose a very fair and balanced mediator who explained that not everything would go my way (or my ex-spouses way). Despite that, London fought as far as she could when it was needed. It was a long, slow day but when the mediator was consulting with the other side, London was always advising me on her next argument and strategy. London's work was incredibly thorough, timely and organized. I always felt extremely comfortable and confident with the quality of her work. London is truly trustworthy.

I was very pleased with Jennifer’s professionalism and willingness to listen to what I had to say. I hired Jennifer to help me as my ex was unwilling to disclose what was happening to funds set aside specifically for my children. Unlike the lawyer I hired for my divorce, or other subsequent lawyers who disbelieved what I had to say about what was happening, or the irrational actions of my ex, Jennifer listened and was able to work with me to resolve the situation. I felt confident in her advise and she was always willing to explain things in a manner I was able to understand. More importantly, she listened when I disagreed and didn’t try to pressure my decisions (giving me time to work through my emotional reluctance, at times, so that I could make rational decisions regarding the case and which moved the case forward). I would highly recommend Jennifer to anyone in need of a lawyer with regards to family law.

Jennifer was absolutely phenomenal with my case. I was/am dealing with a very narcissistic ex husband and Jennifer was calm, cool and collected while dealing with him and my custody case. She was very to the point with him and extremely helpful to me. She understood that I am a single mother with a single income, she was conscious of the fact that I didn’t have an endless amount of money. Jennifer would tell me all of the options that there were and we would discuss which route was best and she cared about my input. She cared about me and my daughter! I would call or email Jennifer with questions or concerns and I thought I was bothering her so I apologized (all the time!) and she reassured me that I am not a bother. I would recommend Jennifer to anyone dealing with divorce/custody issues. I will hire Jennifer in the future if I need further assistance. I just can’t say enough good things about Jennifer!

I started my divorce process in mid 2020, what a time to have to go through this process. But I don't think there's really a "good" time for such a thing. The original attorney I teamed up with at the beginning of my divorce, Myah Kehoe (Kehoe Moneyhun Law, LLC) which I recommend as well. That attorney recommended a handful of attorneys based on the particulars of my case. After consulting with each of these attorneys, I decided upon Jennifer (Jenny) Eadie and I'm glad I made that decision. My case was protracted (likely due to the pandemic), involving a non-responsive other party, and a lack of willingness to compromise. Jenny was highly skilled at taking over the case, getting up to speed, and communicating with both parties in a timely fashion. Jenny helped bring my case to a resolution and a positive outcome. If you want an attorney that's patient, polite, and efficient; then look no further. Jenny is it, I highly recommend Jenny Eadie as an attorney.

Kevin always steered me in the right direction and warned me of all possible outcomes with my case. He always was straight forward and honest with me with everything, never leading me down a bad path once. I remember always getting off the phone with Kevin feeling a thousand times better knowing he was working his hardest for me. He always had my sons best interest in mind as well as mine. When it was all said and done I left the courthouse in absolute shock, Kevin had won me my case and more importantly got my son in my hands with custody in a stable home where I knew he was safe. Without Westbrook I would be sitting in prison tonight. I have worked with her for over a year on my case and when I say that, what I mean is: she has dealt with me for over a year and worked on my case. Westbrook is the definition of left field, she comes up with stuff out of no where that makes you feel stupid for never thinking of yourself. In my year with her I definitely thought I finally had an idea of what sort of attorney she was and how she operates. NOPE! She suits up for court and it’s as if you hired a whole different woman! There were times in that court room I’d sworn I saw a cape around her. This woman is absolutely amazing and I owe my life to her, if I ever get falsely accused again there is no one else I would ever go to. EVER. If I moved across the country I’d make her get licensed there just to be my defense again. I gave this poor woman absolute hell for things that had nothing to do with her at times and yet she’d be up until 3am working on my case. She can seem a bit unorthodox but let me assure you there is a method to her madness and you do not want to be the one going against her in a court room because she works in the most unpredictable ways and then suddenly brings it all together and by the time you realize what she did it’s already over. I’m not saying I trust the process, but I do trust her and her process. You have the choice of who’s about to defend you and based on what you did or in my case what you are falsely accused of doing…. Trust me when I say that Westbrook is best bet I ever put my life on. She’s amazing, she’s the best, she’s going to get you through the nearly impossible,

Three years ago I was wrongfully convicted of crimes I did not commit. After winning an appeal I was assigned Westbrook. I was a problem client, I did not wanna wave my sixty day speedy trial rights to give her more time to work on my case all I saw was the thirty months I had been wrongfully imprisoned. Westbrook did her best and actually won my case and got me released from custody. After watching my previous attorney just roll over and show his belly during the first trial, it was refreshing just to see Westbrook fight, veraciously for my rights, to defend me with a tenacity of someone who honestly cares about doing their very best. I would say hands down Westbrook is the best lawyer in Oregon.

Marissa helped me with the last (I hope) of a series of many family / parenting plan matters that Easley Law represented me on throughout the years. Marissa quickly got up to speed on my case, the scope of the matter at hand, and the nuances and challenges with the opposing party. Marissa provided solutions and counsel with creativity and realistic approaches with great competence. She managed opposing counsel with respect and collegiality, yet very adeptly and assertively on my case's behalf. I also appreciate that Marissa was humble enough to research matters to ensure she had the latest and best information. My case included some uniqueness that required some extra research, and her assessment and subsequent strategy was right on, leaving opposing counsel's client without loopholes that were not in our child's best interest. Marissa's was assertive yet tactful, and I feel that she effectively led the process along without excessive costs or time, despite backups and delays on the opposing side and large court backlogs. When needed, Marissa could handily, kindly, and respectfully explain things that became frustrating or not realistic to me, and kept the case moving as effectively as possible. In other words, she quickly and effectively brought me "back down to earth" when things became intense, as it sometimes does in this process. I know I got the best outcome without excessive billing. Most importantly, the interests of my child prevailed to the greatest extent possible, thanks to her superior work and support. We are forever grateful to Marissa, and also to everyone at Easley Law.

Mr. Watkins was an AMAZING attorney, and went the extra mile for me when he easily could have chosen not to. One of the two best intellectual property attorneys I've been associated with in my 50 years of business experience. Michelle pleaded our case concerning a trademark that was deemed by the trademark officer to be too similar in definition as to be an infringement. She convinced the reviewing officer that we would not be infringing and consequently we received our registered mark for the product. In another instance she negotiated a co-existance agreement that could have cost us the trademark of our flagship product and, even convinced the other party to pay most of our legal expense.

If you are facing not one but multiple criminal charges (counts) involving the operation of a motor vehicle which carry the potential consequences of jail time and a big license suspension if convicted, there is good news. You can call Ben. Prior to facing this type of vexing ordeal, I had never been arrested in my lifetime. My case went all the way past a favorably conducted evidentiary hearing and legal conferences, just shy of having a 6-person jury trial scheduled with the Court over several months (longer than a year)—where Ben tirelessly, diligently, masterfully worked as the lead Attorney on defeating the entire case. All charges are being dismissed! Let's go from the beginning of this adversarial legal process, where the Office of Administrative Hearings for the DMW was moving to immediately suspend my drivers license within the first ten days of the custodial arrest. After reading a legal notice prepared by Ben and the owner of the law firm which was promptly delivered to the Prosecutor/Police in advance of the DMV suspension hearing, Police elected not to file a police report within the 10-day period required to seek a suspension of my license with the DMV. This procedural issue resulted in an immediate dismissal of the DMV Implied Consent Hearing case. This is the first victory achieved in a very short amount of time after retaining Ben as my lead Attorney on the overall matter. When you retain Ben as your legal advisor, you also receive the support of the entire team of lawyers at the law firm, including the owner of the law firm himself, Mark who has been in the business for 4 decades. Why were the overall results of the case so highly favorable like this? The Officer who charged me with the most serious count never actually conducted Field Sobriety Tests to determine if there was PROBABLE CAUSE to reasonably charge me with DUII. Ben highlighted this major mistake made by the Officer and crafted a plan on how exploit this major flaw to champion a cause for my vindication (legally, constitutionally, and according to statutory sources of case law), so that every advantage to my defense was methodically crafted. What happened next was at the evidentiary hearing, where Ben cross examined the Officer, up to the point just shy of impeaching the Officer as a witness having all of his credibility drained for his placement of false misleading evidence into a Sworn Affidavit for an unconstitutional Search Warrant. Ben effectively demonstrated why the Officer did this: BECAUSE HE DID NOT HAVE PROBABLE CAUSE for the highest count and charge of DUII from his own investigation. So, the Officer falsified and fabricated PROBABLE CAUSE by subsequently writing it into a misleading Sworn Affidavit. How did Ben point this out to the Court? The video evidence from the Police Body Cameras (presented in Court) did NOT match the false misleading fabricated written reported evidence the Officer placed into the misleading Sworn Affidavit. So yes, not just in Third-World countries can you get FRAMED, It happens like this right here in America practically every night and day. Did the Officer get fired? Of course not, Oregon has a super liberal jurisdiction here. The Judge, Prosecutor, and Administration for the Police Force all work under the same umbrella and they look out for each other, even when incompetent, dishonest Police Officers do things like Lying in a Sworn Affidavit to fabricate evidence. This is the definition for liberal. Liberal for them, not for the accused. The Court still wanted to Prosecute the case on all counts, even after the evidentiary hearing! The element of complexity was spiraling. Ben turned this foul ball into a home run! I'm grateful to have been represented by such a world class law firm. The owner Mark Cogan is one super cool cat, poised. Ben will crush with a velvet hammer making no sound to those doing things such as lying in a Sworn Affidavit.

I recently received a speeding ticket while driving through Oregon and reached out to this firm for assistance. I was connected with Kelli, who kindly helped me communicate with the court. Unfortunately, I learned that the court required in-person attendance, which left me feeling helpless as I reside out of state and couldn't attend. While searching for solutions, I came across numerous positive Google reviews detailing other clients' experiences. Many had shared how Blake assisted them in enrolling in a diversion program, which ultimately helped them dismiss their citations. Intrigued, I read through the information on their website about the diversion program and realized it might be the best option for me. With this newfound insight, I drafted a petition letter to the court. To my relief, the judge agreed to allow me into the program, promising to dismiss my citation upon completion of an online course and payment of the court fee. Though Blake couldn't assist me directly, the shared experiences and helpful articles truly guided me toward the best outcome. I am incredibly grateful for the support I received!

Jason was absolutely incredible. Not only is he an extremely good attorney, but he has a unique skill. He can read people with an uncanny accuracy. I told him my situation and he asked some questions about my wife (now ex-wife). I answered candidly. He immediately developed a strategy, based not only upon the facts of our situation, but also upon his reading of my wife. After speaking with my then wife's attorney, Jason sized him up within minutes and further refined our strategy. His assessment was spot on. He told me exactly what we would do and accurately predicted their response. The entire case played out exactly how he said it would. I can not overstate how valuable his ability to read people is. Although I hated getting a divorce, I am thankful that I had Jason as my attorney.

As a real estate broker with 30 years of experience, primarily working with attorneys and professional fiduciaries, I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with Ryan Johnson and the team at Johnson and Taylor Law on multiple real estate transactions. For many, real estate represents their largest or only asset, and the team at Johnson and Taylor understands the importance of addressing these needs with compassion. Their technical expertise and organizational skills ensure that every detail is carefully managed, regardless of the property's condition. Working with Johnson and Taylor is always an honor, and I trust them to approach even the most complex cases with professionalism and respect. What a Domestic Violence Lawyer Can Do for You

A domestic violence lawyer provides legal assistance to individuals involved in cases of domestic abuse, whether you are a victim seeking protection or someone accused of domestic violence defending against the charges. These lawyers help with obtaining restraining orders (protective orders), representing clients in criminal court, and handling related family law issues such as child custody, divorce, and visitation rights.

If you are dealing with domestic violence, a lawyer can help protect your rights and navigate the legal system to ensure your safety or defend you if you’re falsely accused.

When Should I Hire a Domestic Violence Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a domestic violence lawyer if you are:

  • A Victim of Domestic Violence:
    • Filing for a protective order (restraining order): If you need immediate protection from an abuser, a lawyer can help you file for a protective order, which legally requires the abuser to stay away from you and refrain from contacting you.
    • Divorce or separation due to abuse: If domestic violence is a factor in your relationship, a lawyer can help you pursue a divorce or legal separation and ensure that you are protected throughout the process.
    • Child custody and visitation issues: A lawyer can help you secure custody of your children and limit or restrict the abuser’s visitation rights to protect the safety of your children.
    • Filing criminal charges: If you are pursuing criminal charges against the abuser, a domestic violence lawyer can work with law enforcement and prosecutors to ensure the case is handled properly.
    • Assistance with safety planning: A lawyer can advise on the legal steps to create a safety plan, including securing temporary housing, and taking steps to protect you and your family.
  • Accused of Domestic Violence:
    • Defending against criminal charges: If you’ve been accused of domestic violence, a lawyer can defend your case, challenge the evidence, and represent you in court. If possible, the lawyer can help get charges reduced or dismissed.
    • Challenging a restraining order: If someone has obtained a protective order against you, a lawyer can help you contest the order to prevent it from negatively impacting your life, including your employment and child custody rights.
    • Dealing with family law issues: Domestic violence allegations can affect child custody, divorce, and property division. A lawyer can represent your interests in family court and ensure that your parental rights are protected.
    • Avoiding criminal record implications: A lawyer can work to minimize the impact of the allegations on your record, which can affect your employment, housing, and future legal matters.

Hiring a lawyer at the earliest stages can help ensure your rights are protected and the case is handled effectively, whether you are seeking protection or defending against accusations.

What Does a Domestic Violence Lawyer Do?

A domestic violence lawyer provides various legal services depending on the specifics of your case. These responsibilities often include:

  • For Victims:
    • Filing for protective orders: A lawyer can help victims of domestic violence obtain temporary or permanent restraining orders, which provide legal protection by restricting the abuser’s access to you and your children.
    • Representing you in divorce and child custody matters: Domestic violence often leads to divorce or separation, and a lawyer can represent you in family court to protect your assets, secure custody of your children, and arrange spousal and child support.
    • Criminal representation: Lawyers work with law enforcement and prosecutors to pursue criminal charges against the abuser, ensuring that you are informed and supported throughout the legal process.
    • Safety planning and legal advice: Lawyers provide advice on how to stay safe legally and can assist in securing temporary housing, providing guidance on how to leave abusive situations safely.
  • For the Accused:
    • Defending against charges: A lawyer will build a defense by investigating the case, gathering evidence, and challenging the claims made against you. If necessary, the lawyer can negotiate with prosecutors to reduce charges or penalties.
    • Challenging protective orders: If a restraining order has been placed against you, a lawyer can contest the order and present evidence to defend against it, aiming to minimize its impact on your life and reputation.
    • Handling related family law issues: Lawyers help defend against domestic violence allegations in divorce, child custody, and visitation disputes, working to protect your parental rights and reputation.
    • Preventing long-term consequences: A lawyer will work to protect you from the long-term consequences of a domestic violence conviction, such as a criminal record that could affect employment, housing, and more.

How Are Domestic Violence Lawyers Paid?

Domestic violence lawyers generally charge for their services in different ways depending on the case's complexity and the type of legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many domestic violence lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location. Hourly rates are common for both criminal defense and family law matters.
  • Flat fee: For specific tasks, such as filing a restraining order or defending against a straightforward domestic violence charge, some lawyers offer a flat fee that covers all legal work related to that service.
  • Retainer: In complex cases, such as those involving criminal charges, divorce, and custody disputes, a lawyer may require a retainer fee, which is an upfront payment that covers future legal services.
  • Pro bono or reduced fees: Some domestic violence lawyers provide pro bono (free) or reduced-fee services to victims of domestic abuse who cannot afford legal representation.

It’s important to discuss fees during your consultation to ensure you understand how much your case will cost and what payment options may be available.

How Much Does a Domestic Violence Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a domestic violence lawyer depends on the complexity of your case, the lawyer’s experience, and the type of legal work required. General cost estimates include:

  • Restraining orders: The legal fees for filing a protective or restraining order typically range from $500 to $2,500, depending on whether the case requires a hearing.
  • Criminal defense: If you’re defending against domestic violence charges, legal fees may range from $2,500 to $15,000 or more, depending on whether the case goes to trial and the severity of the charges.
  • Family law issues: Legal fees for divorce, child custody, and other family law issues related to domestic violence can range from $3,000 to $15,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the case.
  • Hourly rates: Domestic violence lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour for their services, with more experienced lawyers charging higher rates.

Always ask for a detailed cost estimate during your consultation to understand the total cost of legal services.

Top Questions to Ask a Domestic Violence Lawyer

Before hiring a domestic violence lawyer, it’s important to ask key questions to ensure they have the right experience and approach for your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with domestic violence cases?
Ensure that the lawyer has handled domestic violence cases similar to yours, whether you’re a victim or the accused.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, flat fees, or a retainer, and ask for a detailed cost estimate.
  3. What is the likely outcome of my case?
Ask the lawyer for an honest assessment of your case, including potential challenges and expected outcomes.
  4. How long will the process take?
Domestic violence cases vary in length, so ask the lawyer how long they expect the process to last and what might cause delays.
  5. Will I need to appear in court?
Ask if your participation in court is required, and how the lawyer plans to represent you during hearings or trials.
  6. What steps should I take to protect myself or my rights?
Whether you’re a victim seeking protection or defending against allegations, ask the lawyer how they will help you navigate the situation.

How to Check the Credibility of a Domestic Violence Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable domestic violence lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Check their bar status: Verify with your state bar association that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for domestic violence experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in domestic violence cases and have successfully handled cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients say about their experience with the lawyer.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have been involved in domestic violence cases.
  • Check for memberships in relevant organizations: Look for certifications or memberships in family law or domestic violence advocacy groups, such as the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV).

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a domestic violence lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • For Victims:
    • Details of the abuse: Prepare a detailed account of the abuse, including dates, locations, and descriptions of any injuries or threats.
    • Police reports and medical records: Bring copies of any police reports, medical records, or photographs that document the abuse.
    • Legal filings: If you have already filed for a restraining order or been involved in any legal proceedings, bring copies of those documents.
    • Questions about your safety and legal options: Be ready to ask about the best steps to protect yourself and your family, as well as what legal actions you should pursue.
  • For the Accused:
    • Details of the allegations: Prepare a detailed account of the incident or allegations against you, including any evidence or witnesses that support your defense.
    • Legal documents: Bring any legal documents you have received, such as a restraining order, criminal charges, or child custody filings.
    • Questions about your defense: Prepare questions about the legal process, possible penalties, and how the lawyer plans to defend your case.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your situation and provide the best possible legal advice.
