One of the two best intellectual property attorneys I've been associated with in my 50 years of business experience. Michelle pleaded our case concerning a trademark that was deemed by the trademark officer to be too similar in definition as to be an infringement. She convinced the reviewing officer that we would not be infringing and consequently we received our registered mark for the product. In another instance she negotiated a co-existance agreement that could have cost us the trademark of our flagship product and, even convinced the other party to pay most of our legal expense.

Rebecca Winters is an exceptional attorney at Family Law. What I thought would be a complicated, lengthy and expensive divorce turned into a quick, clear and surprisingly affordable experience thanks to her. Rebecca gave me confidence from the start, handled everything with amazing efficiency, and in just three days, my divorce was finalized. I couldn't be more grateful and recommend her without reservation as the best attorney in her expertise.

If you are facing not one but multiple criminal charges (counts) involving the operation of a motor vehicle which carry the potential consequences of jail time and a big license suspension if convicted, there is good news. You can call Ben. Prior to facing this type of vexing ordeal, I had never been arrested in my lifetime. My case went all the way past a favorably conducted evidentiary hearing and legal conferences, just shy of having a 6-person jury trial scheduled with the Court over several months (longer than a year)—where Ben tirelessly, diligently, masterfully worked as the lead Attorney on defeating the entire case. All charges are being dismissed! Let's go from the beginning of this adversarial legal process, where the Office of Administrative Hearings for the DMW was moving to immediately suspend my drivers license within the first ten days of the custodial arrest. After reading a legal notice prepared by Ben and the owner of the law firm which was promptly delivered to the Prosecutor/Police in advance of the DMV suspension hearing, Police elected not to file a police report within the 10-day period required to seek a suspension of my license with the DMV. This procedural issue resulted in an immediate dismissal of the DMV Implied Consent Hearing case. This is the first victory achieved in a very short amount of time after retaining Ben as my lead Attorney on the overall matter. When you retain Ben as your legal advisor, you also receive the support of the entire team of lawyers at the law firm, including the owner of the law firm himself, Mark who has been in the business for 4 decades. Why were the overall results of the case so highly favorable like this? The Officer who charged me with the most serious count never actually conducted Field Sobriety Tests to determine if there was PROBABLE CAUSE to reasonably charge me with DUII. Ben highlighted this major mistake made by the Officer and crafted a plan on how exploit this major flaw to champion a cause for my vindication (legally, constitutionally, and according to statutory sources of case law), so that every advantage to my defense was methodically crafted. What happened next was at the evidentiary hearing, where Ben cross examined the Officer, up to the point just shy of impeaching the Officer as a witness having all of his credibility drained for his placement of false misleading evidence into a Sworn Affidavit for an unconstitutional Search Warrant. Ben effectively demonstrated why the Officer did this: BECAUSE HE DID NOT HAVE PROBABLE CAUSE for the highest count and charge of DUII from his own investigation. So, the Officer falsified and fabricated PROBABLE CAUSE by subsequently writing it into a misleading Sworn Affidavit. How did Ben point this out to the Court? The video evidence from the Police Body Cameras (presented in Court) did NOT match the false misleading fabricated written reported evidence the Officer placed into the misleading Sworn Affidavit. So yes, not just in Third-World countries can you get FRAMED, It happens like this right here in America practically every night and day. Did the Officer get fired? Of course not, Oregon has a super liberal jurisdiction here. The Judge, Prosecutor, and Administration for the Police Force all work under the same umbrella and they look out for each other, even when incompetent, dishonest Police Officers do things like Lying in a Sworn Affidavit to fabricate evidence. This is the definition for liberal. Liberal for them, not for the accused. The Court still wanted to Prosecute the case on all counts, even after the evidentiary hearing! The element of complexity was spiraling. Ben turned this foul ball into a home run! I'm grateful to have been represented by such a world class law firm. The owner Mark Cogan is one super cool cat, poised. Ben will crush with a velvet hammer making no sound to those doing things such as lying in a Sworn Affidavit.

Yadira Ramirez is an excellent attorney. I was blindsided by false sexual assault allegations. Yadira was always calm, cool and collected. I felt she had my best intentions. She had a lot of patience when I got angry or upset because I didn't understand how the courts work, or how lawyers communicate with the courts, and also the laws. I felt more at ease once when she thoroughly explained how court proceedings take place. Although, I could not ever be fully at ease because of the implications in my case. We had evidence that showed my innocence. But even with that, I still felt anxiety because of how inconsistent the courts in America are. Yadira could have told me that I had a airtight case and that we were going to win in court. But she was honest and said that courts are unpredictable and that she can't guarantee a victory. Which I understand. But she also said that we do have good evidence and that would show favorably for me in court. Court was set for a Friday, and on Monday my accuser decided she wanted a consent agreement. I did not know what that was, and Yadira thoroughly explained what it was. The first draft of the consent agreement their attorney sent Yadira was bogus and unfair. Yadira told me to stand firm and not accept the terms. Yadira redlined the document an added language in my favor. Their side sent back another agreement, and Yadira once again said to stand my ground and not accept it... So finally 2 days before we're supposed to go to court. My accuser and her attorney caved and gave in to our terms and a much more favorable consent agreement, which ended up in a dismissal of my accuser's restraining order against me... I was extremely anxious and nervous the entire time, 3 months of absolute hell. Yadira gave me my life back and restored a little faith in the legal system. There are lawyers out there that 100% care about their clients and Yadira is absolutely one that cares. I recommend Yadira for any legal matters regarding restraining orders. Thank you Yadira

Thomas Ybarra is a highly organized and knowledgeable attorney and I'm so grateful for his attention to detail when it came to my divorce proceedings. He was always honest with me about what to expect and also heard me when I told him what I wanted/needed. He was able to successfully argue my position for sole custody of my two children, secure me spousal support and child support, and negotiate an agreement that allowed me to keep my house. His attention to my case was constant and I could always get ahold of him when I needed advice. I highly recommend Mr. Ybarra's counsel if you are looking for representation in a divorce or child custody case. He knows the law and is able to explain how the process works. He made my very volatile divorce bearable and having him in my corner was a complete godsend. No one truly wins in divorce, but in my case he got me a big win on paper. Grateful for his representation.

Jason was absolutely incredible. Not only is he an extremely good attorney, but he has a unique skill. He can read people with an uncanny accuracy. I told him my situation and he asked some questions about my wife (now ex-wife). I answered candidly. He immediately developed a strategy, based not only upon the facts of our situation, but also upon his reading of my wife. After speaking with my then wife's attorney, Jason sized him up within minutes and further refined our strategy. His assessment was spot on. He told me exactly what we would do and accurately predicted their response. The entire case played out exactly how he said it would. I can not overstate how valuable his ability to read people is. Although I hated getting a divorce, I am thankful that I had Jason as my attorney.

I already have an attorney in a different state and they say I need one here to modify the oregon judgment. I would definitely not recommend this group of attorneys. HIRE. CAMBELL. NOW. When you're involved in a highly litigious case involving your children, you are going to want Cambell in your corner. She was clever, extremely organized and thoughtful in her strategy, despite the sh!tshow we were up against regarding the opposing party. Cambell fought hard to ensure that our plan was in favor of the best interest of my child but also prioritized the things that were important to me. I also always had fun talking to her. She gave me facts that didn't give me false hope, but armed me with information about what could happen and how to best protect myself and my family. She is an amazing attorney.

When you’re going through a divorce, especially with children involved, you want someone to fight for you and always be on your side and the best interest of your child. It’s often messy, and can be the worst part of your life; you really need that person that will be in your corner. That’s Cambell. Throughout my divorce, I always felt protected, validated and that my rights were preserved and honored in all the decision making with Cambell as my lawyer. 4 years later and I am still thankful for how everything turned out, and am reaping the benefits of having hired Cambell Boucher for my divorce. That was one thing that was a very easy decision.

Walking through divorce is the absolute worst, but Natalie and her team make it so much simpler and manageable. In the legal world where it all seems overwhelming and confusing, she me feel able to cope and understand what was in front of me. They prepared me for each step along the way. Natalie sought to understand what my priorities were from the very beginning and never backed down from fighting for those things. She always spoke truth, even when it was hard to hear, and constantly reminded me not to speculate but rather focus on what was in front of me. She was compassionate and understood the difficulty I was being faced with and recommended some solid steps to help in the healing process as well. I am so thankful with the outcome of a very hard path and know we would not have ended where we are today without her.

He doesn’t care! He sees dollar signs and tells me I should sue my past attorney for what she failed to include in my divorce. Doesn’t even want to look at the bank statements and my husbands Quicken account with my son’s savings account numbers, and my account numbers, set for download and transfer… which he did. He doesn’t care that my husband abused and stole from my kids and I, prior to our marriage. This attorney is book smart. Immature at life. Talks down to me as if I’m a child; I’m at least twice his senior. Arrogant firm; arrogant attorney.

Kaori is a great lawyer and worked really hard on my behalf when I was getting a divorce. I had met 3-4 other lawyers before her and felt like she was the only one that really cared and listened intently when we met. Throughout our time together, she knew how to best communicate with me when I was feeling frazzled and was very patient when I need explanation. I felt like we were a team -- I knew my history/situation and she knew the law. As a result, we worked well together to make a strong settlement case. As things got more intense, and I often got overwhelmed, I was really happy to have her in my corner. She is calm, focused, smart, very capable and kind. I can't recommend her highly enough and am happy to speak more on the phone if anyone should want to know more.

If you are considering hiring C.J. Graves as your lawyer, I’d like to share my troubling experience working with him on a parenting plan modification which would result in a child support modification. Now, keep in mind, I have sole legal custody of my son. Unfortunately, C.J. satisfied all of the opposing party's requests for the provisions in the new supplemental judgement. Nothing we discussed and initially agreed between parties when we “settled” out of court was included in the judgement, except for the 50/50 that I agreed to. The opposing party submitted the judgement that they drafted as final. C.J. submitted the response which was disregarded by Judge Bailey and he signed the opposing parties draft as final. This did not include ANY of the agreed upon/revised provisions that we discussed. C.J. found out about this, called me and emailed me and said he wasn’t happy with the new judgment. However, he signed it without my knowledge and approval. From there, he was not able to discuss the damaging and inaccurate statements with opposing counsel. Not only did the child support modification not include the private health insurance I pay for my son, he also allowed the opposing party to include close to $800 in health care related expenses. He flat out told me he would get this fixed. That never happened. He didn’t even get the other party to agree to edit the start date that the new parenting plan started. This resulted in a 3-month retro for the other party- which was a lie. Either C.J. lacks knowledge of basic information on how to modify a child support payment and/or the ability to properly represent a client. How are basic, fundamental, and true facts not incorporated in a new judgement when you have a lawyer representing you and these were specific things I had to ask him to change? It appears that C.J. was very helpful in allowing the other party to achieve what they wanted. So, in essence, C.J. did not negotiate ANYTHING on my behalf. He did not do the work that I paid him for (negotiating and representing me) because the judgement says it all. This resulted in an inaccurate monthly child support payment, and C.J. knew it. There are additional factors that are influencing my rating and decision which I prefer to leave outside of this review. However, one of the most outstanding is his response time. I would not hear from him for 2 weeks, if not more. Part of his communications said that we shouldn’t “push it” or “upset them in any way,” if we wanted them to agree to consider changing anything (to the true information). This was concerning to me because C.J. constantly told me that the opposing counsel didn’t call him back or reply to his emails. His inability to communicate with opposing counsel set me back and put me in a very compromised position. C.J. was hired to negotiate and represent me. Unfortunately, I lost more than what rights I went in with, and he is very aware of this. At minimum to have the health care expense I pay for my son included in the child support calculator. I have always maintained health insurance for my son. Uninterrupted medical coverage. The lack of timely communication left me wondering for weeks if anything was happening and or going to change. He also made deceiving promises about outcomes that were valid and realistic. I walked out losing and 100% unsatisfied. This was a clear-cut case, and C.J. did not do his job. I truly felt neglected and that my case was not a priority for C.J. He was not able to achieve anything for me and the final judgement contained clauses that were never agreed upon. He was not able to negotiate anything for me. He even stated that in his conversations with opposing counsel, “We simply could not reach a resolution as to the issues”. Simply put, the other party was able to create a judgement that included everything they wanted (that was not agreed upon) and C.J. had no power to negotiate it.

I have 110% trust for the way they handled my case. C.J. Graves took my case on a Thursday, studied it over the weekend and won for me that next Tuesday. Lillian is the third attorney I hired so far I wish if she was the first attorney I would have hired … I hired Lilin 2020 since my 14 year old son was abused by his father and paternal grandmother then again I rehired Lillian in 2023 since my ex and his attorney lied to the court and got a false judgement against me and Lillian fought tooth and nail to relief me from the false judgement..Lilian knows her job so well…You can take your issues to her and she will fight like hell for you as a client. Lil You have made our lives better in every way and we are eternally grateful! Thank you for everything we will never ever forget it. If you are still on the fence about hiring Lillian Bier as an attorney then look no further for someone with a passion for justice, a fighter for her clients, and the most honest and direct lawyer then look no further because Lil is a top notch attorney you can hire… there’s no regret in hiring Lil… Bier family law is the best law firm you can come across very excellent and efficient.. Lil is the person you want on your side. She's a brilliant lawyer with deep insight she’s the law herself….She listens, communicates, responds and gets the job done for her client. this lawyer guided me with good advice with a parental interference case, and got me to be able to see my son again after not seeing son for 4 mo from ex wife issues, of which i will forever be grateful to the lawyer. he was helpful but was constantly busy, and indicated he didn't have a lot of time. i honestly feel he was trying to make time, but in the end i was called by his secretary and told that in the time frame i needed help, i would be better off finding another lawyer service, they did provide me a list and a contact number to find lawyers. this was when i was getting ready for a hearing that was coming up in 1 week. but for the time that i was getting advice from this lawyer it was better than i could have done on my own. the one piece of feedback i would like to give to him is if they new they would not be able to help me further then dont take money from me to put into trust fund. of course it is possible that they didn't realize the time involved, or that i would require more than an hour consulting a month until a few days after i made the deposit. it seems like i will get most of it back, but it might be some time. we will see, it seems more like a staffing competence rather than lawyers.... i'm used to professional lawyers from the past but from a larger organized firm. this lawyer is more affordable and i would use him again if i would have assurances for how much help they can and can not do, what they are willing to accept as a consultant, and how often i can contact them, and when i would get a response. even though i think this lawyer has good advice, and is affordable it is really just one or two people that run the show, and they need to learn to organize better, or get better help to organize and i hope they take this feedback and i wish them success. i feel this lawyer would do better working at a larger firm than deal with all the hustle and logistics of a business.

When I was served with a divorce I thought I would handle it by myself even though my soon to be ex had a lawyer. I learned very quickly that was a bad idea. There are way too many laws, rules, procedures, etc that have to be followed. Doing it myself went downhill pretty quickly so I wanted to get a lawyer. I asked some people for help finding a lawyer, and several of them gave me Andy's name. He is great at explaining things so that you understand them even when there are a whole lot of moving parts. I was amazed at how well he understands people and can predict what will happen or people will do. After he got involved we eventually came to a settlement that basically gave me what I asked for to start with.

Joel Kent practices domestic relations law with an exquisite degree of skill, thoughtfulness and intellect. Joel is often credited as the leading family law attorney in Oregon, but I wonder if the breadth of that label should not be far more widespread. If you are fortunate enough to retain him, you'll have an advocate who not only possesses finely tuned trial skills, but also engages in tireless preparation and incredible professionalism. My mantra quickly became, "Whatever you think, Joel." and I was not once disappointed.

Excellent Lawyer! Laurel Hook will definitely take care of you during a very difficult time in your life along with your family dynamics changing. - She along with her team are absolutely amazing! She definitely knows the intricacies of the divorce laws and is there to represent you to the fullest. She talked me off of ledges on many occasions, I came into her office terrified of filing for divorce but knew I had to and she walked me thru a very complicated process paying attention to so many details, I had no clue about. She explained her strategies to me in ways I completely understood and felt comfortable with. I finalized my divorce with confidence due to her support and knowledge. Her team is there to come beside you which I was very thankful for. If you want the best lawyer, go with Laurel Hook esp if you divorce is complicated with a business or other stuff. She truly cared about me and my kids thru this entire process! I highly recommend Laurel Hook!

Hired this "attorney?" for a child custody case for my daughter. Extremely unprofessional in her demeanor and attire. She charges $275.00 an hour for her services and will charge you for every little thing! During her/our first hearing with the judge, she was unable to even present her case after a combative attitude and heated arguments with the judge. Judge decided case without even speaking to my daughter, or any of her witnesses because of this. We fired her and her final bill was trumped up to squeeze out every last dime from us...Final cost: $5500.+ just up to the FIRST hearing! BUYER BEWARE, it is our opinion that it is all about running up the bill with her!

When we came to Shelley, we were desperate. My husband had been dealing with having his daughter withheld from him at random, and constant abusive text messages from his daughter's mother. His daughter was not in the greatest situation, and the judge was believing all of the lies that were being told to her for years upon years. Enough was enough! We searched and searched, Shelley came to the rescue! She gave us hope, and reminded my husband that he IS a good father, and deserves his daughter on a consistent basis. She gave specific guidance on how to organize information and give it to her. She did not make any open ended promises. Shelley is very black and white. She keeps it real. She isn't going to sugar coat things for you, or fluff things up to make them what they aren't. If she needs something or has a concern she will bring it to the appropriate person's attention in a professional manner. She helped make our family complete. She has been a great investment to our family, and gave us what we were not able to achieve on our own...our daughter. Not only was my husband granted more parenting time, but he was also granted sole custody. Now we can rest easy knowing that she is getting the BEST possible care and education, all thanks to Shelley Fuller! We love her!

Divorce is a scare thing I felt. But Shelly not only told me my rights as a wife but also made sure I understood them. My ex was not only violent but mentally and verbally aggressive. I was afraid. But Shelly reassured me that the law was there.... it gave me a great level of peace. She's amazing and I will always make sure people who need her know it!!!!

No one wants to get divorced, and certainly no one wants to have a contentious divorce and custody battle. Walking into court, I never felt more confident thanks to Alex's hard work, preparation and caring communication throughout the whole process. Alex is incredibly smart, measured, thoughtful and has a personal nature that will make you feel at ease. But it's also his tenacity and doggedness that makes you feel confident you're in the right hands. I interviewed numerous lawyers before final landing on Alex and I am very thankful to have him on my team.

I hired David in February 2017 to manage a very difficult situation with my Dad who lived in Yamhill County at the time of his incident but for medical reasons we had to move him to Portland. David went out of his way to balance and mitigate the challenges of court appearances between Portland and McMinnville. He was professional at all times explaining the legal process, caring and understanding of our situation which was invaluable.

I recently hired David Celuch to fight a traffic ticket. He was professional and easy to talk to from start to finish. He was able to find a way to get the ticket completely dismissed which is the outcome we were hoping for. I feel like he is very attentive to detail and I am very pleased that I hired him. I would most definitely recommend him to anyone.

I talked to Squire Bozorth twice on the phone and he was extremely rude, abrupt and completely inaccurate on the details of the case. I wanted to meet in person to go over the case which included photos that I printed, plus a video. He was doing everything he could to keep me on the phone and not meet in person. He never let me finish talking, but finally agreed to meet. I found out that I could tell him to file a motion to withdraw my case. He was obligated to do so and the judge approved it.

Squire represented me on an extremely nuanced case and completely failed to come up with any sort of strategic defense. He doesn’t listen on phone calls and his written responses are akin to that of an unintelligible community college student. He’s a lazy lawyer, constantly late and unprepared, was often reprimanded by the presiding judge for his tardiness and lack of preparedness in court. Complete waste of time and money, would have been better off seeing to things myself and wish I would have. He’s not held in high regard by his own office and can’t tell you the last time he actually won a case that went to trial. Advice? Just retire already.

What a Domestic Violence Lawyer Can Do for You

A domestic violence lawyer provides legal assistance to individuals involved in cases of domestic abuse, whether you are a victim seeking protection or someone accused of domestic violence defending against the charges. These lawyers help with obtaining restraining orders (protective orders), representing clients in criminal court, and handling related family law issues such as child custody, divorce, and visitation rights.

If you are dealing with domestic violence, a lawyer can help protect your rights and navigate the legal system to ensure your safety or defend you if you’re falsely accused.

When Should I Hire a Domestic Violence Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a domestic violence lawyer if you are:

  • A Victim of Domestic Violence:
    • Filing for a protective order (restraining order): If you need immediate protection from an abuser, a lawyer can help you file for a protective order, which legally requires the abuser to stay away from you and refrain from contacting you.
    • Divorce or separation due to abuse: If domestic violence is a factor in your relationship, a lawyer can help you pursue a divorce or legal separation and ensure that you are protected throughout the process.
    • Child custody and visitation issues: A lawyer can help you secure custody of your children and limit or restrict the abuser’s visitation rights to protect the safety of your children.
    • Filing criminal charges: If you are pursuing criminal charges against the abuser, a domestic violence lawyer can work with law enforcement and prosecutors to ensure the case is handled properly.
    • Assistance with safety planning: A lawyer can advise on the legal steps to create a safety plan, including securing temporary housing, and taking steps to protect you and your family.
  • Accused of Domestic Violence:
    • Defending against criminal charges: If you’ve been accused of domestic violence, a lawyer can defend your case, challenge the evidence, and represent you in court. If possible, the lawyer can help get charges reduced or dismissed.
    • Challenging a restraining order: If someone has obtained a protective order against you, a lawyer can help you contest the order to prevent it from negatively impacting your life, including your employment and child custody rights.
    • Dealing with family law issues: Domestic violence allegations can affect child custody, divorce, and property division. A lawyer can represent your interests in family court and ensure that your parental rights are protected.
    • Avoiding criminal record implications: A lawyer can work to minimize the impact of the allegations on your record, which can affect your employment, housing, and future legal matters.

Hiring a lawyer at the earliest stages can help ensure your rights are protected and the case is handled effectively, whether you are seeking protection or defending against accusations.

What Does a Domestic Violence Lawyer Do?

A domestic violence lawyer provides various legal services depending on the specifics of your case. These responsibilities often include:

  • For Victims:
    • Filing for protective orders: A lawyer can help victims of domestic violence obtain temporary or permanent restraining orders, which provide legal protection by restricting the abuser’s access to you and your children.
    • Representing you in divorce and child custody matters: Domestic violence often leads to divorce or separation, and a lawyer can represent you in family court to protect your assets, secure custody of your children, and arrange spousal and child support.
    • Criminal representation: Lawyers work with law enforcement and prosecutors to pursue criminal charges against the abuser, ensuring that you are informed and supported throughout the legal process.
    • Safety planning and legal advice: Lawyers provide advice on how to stay safe legally and can assist in securing temporary housing, providing guidance on how to leave abusive situations safely.
  • For the Accused:
    • Defending against charges: A lawyer will build a defense by investigating the case, gathering evidence, and challenging the claims made against you. If necessary, the lawyer can negotiate with prosecutors to reduce charges or penalties.
    • Challenging protective orders: If a restraining order has been placed against you, a lawyer can contest the order and present evidence to defend against it, aiming to minimize its impact on your life and reputation.
    • Handling related family law issues: Lawyers help defend against domestic violence allegations in divorce, child custody, and visitation disputes, working to protect your parental rights and reputation.
    • Preventing long-term consequences: A lawyer will work to protect you from the long-term consequences of a domestic violence conviction, such as a criminal record that could affect employment, housing, and more.

How Are Domestic Violence Lawyers Paid?

Domestic violence lawyers generally charge for their services in different ways depending on the case's complexity and the type of legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many domestic violence lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location. Hourly rates are common for both criminal defense and family law matters.
  • Flat fee: For specific tasks, such as filing a restraining order or defending against a straightforward domestic violence charge, some lawyers offer a flat fee that covers all legal work related to that service.
  • Retainer: In complex cases, such as those involving criminal charges, divorce, and custody disputes, a lawyer may require a retainer fee, which is an upfront payment that covers future legal services.
  • Pro bono or reduced fees: Some domestic violence lawyers provide pro bono (free) or reduced-fee services to victims of domestic abuse who cannot afford legal representation.

It’s important to discuss fees during your consultation to ensure you understand how much your case will cost and what payment options may be available.

How Much Does a Domestic Violence Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a domestic violence lawyer depends on the complexity of your case, the lawyer’s experience, and the type of legal work required. General cost estimates include:

  • Restraining orders: The legal fees for filing a protective or restraining order typically range from $500 to $2,500, depending on whether the case requires a hearing.
  • Criminal defense: If you’re defending against domestic violence charges, legal fees may range from $2,500 to $15,000 or more, depending on whether the case goes to trial and the severity of the charges.
  • Family law issues: Legal fees for divorce, child custody, and other family law issues related to domestic violence can range from $3,000 to $15,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the case.
  • Hourly rates: Domestic violence lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour for their services, with more experienced lawyers charging higher rates.

Always ask for a detailed cost estimate during your consultation to understand the total cost of legal services.

Top Questions to Ask a Domestic Violence Lawyer

Before hiring a domestic violence lawyer, it’s important to ask key questions to ensure they have the right experience and approach for your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with domestic violence cases?
Ensure that the lawyer has handled domestic violence cases similar to yours, whether you’re a victim or the accused.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, flat fees, or a retainer, and ask for a detailed cost estimate.
  3. What is the likely outcome of my case?
Ask the lawyer for an honest assessment of your case, including potential challenges and expected outcomes.
  4. How long will the process take?
Domestic violence cases vary in length, so ask the lawyer how long they expect the process to last and what might cause delays.
  5. Will I need to appear in court?
Ask if your participation in court is required, and how the lawyer plans to represent you during hearings or trials.
  6. What steps should I take to protect myself or my rights?
Whether you’re a victim seeking protection or defending against allegations, ask the lawyer how they will help you navigate the situation.

How to Check the Credibility of a Domestic Violence Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable domestic violence lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Check their bar status: Verify with your state bar association that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for domestic violence experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in domestic violence cases and have successfully handled cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients say about their experience with the lawyer.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have been involved in domestic violence cases.
  • Check for memberships in relevant organizations: Look for certifications or memberships in family law or domestic violence advocacy groups, such as the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV).

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a domestic violence lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • For Victims:
    • Details of the abuse: Prepare a detailed account of the abuse, including dates, locations, and descriptions of any injuries or threats.
    • Police reports and medical records: Bring copies of any police reports, medical records, or photographs that document the abuse.
    • Legal filings: If you have already filed for a restraining order or been involved in any legal proceedings, bring copies of those documents.
    • Questions about your safety and legal options: Be ready to ask about the best steps to protect yourself and your family, as well as what legal actions you should pursue.
  • For the Accused:
    • Details of the allegations: Prepare a detailed account of the incident or allegations against you, including any evidence or witnesses that support your defense.
    • Legal documents: Bring any legal documents you have received, such as a restraining order, criminal charges, or child custody filings.
    • Questions about your defense: Prepare questions about the legal process, possible penalties, and how the lawyer plans to defend your case.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your situation and provide the best possible legal advice.
