Susan Ford helped me prepare for a small claims case (where I represented my company) for a customer that sued us for nearly $5,000. Before hiring Susan I had checked with two other lawyers but I did not feel confident. Susan helped with both the mediation and the final court hearing. With her knowledge in my brain, I was able to make a clear and coherent explanation of events. The judge decided the case in my favor. I recommend Res Nova for anyone dealing with business issues in Oregon.

There was no part of me that ever wanted to meet Jody or Anna. None! As a 20 year marriage was ending I started asking around for names of attorneys. I didn't have a clue where to start. But, there was one firm that came up several times from people I trusted - Stahancyk, Kent and Hook. I consulted with several firms before SKH and saved them for last. The old adage, save the best for last? Ask Jody or Anna their theory on how you capture a monkey. Hilarious and and so wise. It was at that story, I said... Yes, they are the total for me. They KNOW the law. But, more important that that - THEY UNDERSTAND PEOPLE! By the grace of God I didn't need near as much representation as I thought I would. It was peaceful. From the very beginning Anna Friedhoff spoke candidly and truthfully with me. There were several times she needed to remind that I hired her because she is the professional. I am a strong woman and wanted to run the show. Oopsy! She gently but firmly guided me through it. When it became apparent the divorce was going to be amicable she saved me tens of thousand of dollars in fees. I bullet pointed out what I need/wanted. She drafted, we went back and forth with a few revisions. I even received a refund on my retainer fee!!! I hesitate to mention the swiftness of my divorce as I am fully aware it is not a normal pace. I met Anna Friedhoff on a Wednesday, she had the petition filed by that Friday, September 10th and Clackamas county judge signed our divorce decree October 19th. Yes, I was divorced in 6 weeks. You are in good and caring hands with this firm.

I’m giving Anna Friedhoff 5 stars as a divorce attorney, only because I can’t give 6 stars. Anna is the best attorney in Oregon, and if you’re in the unfortunate position of divorce, she needs to be your first and only call. Anna is an absolute MONSTER of an attorney. She is brilliant, passionate, aggressive, and an all around badass. If anything else, simply hire her to ensure she’s never looking at you from the other side of the courtroom. I promise you, the last name you want to see on the opposing counsel team is Anna Friedhoff. While we dealt with Covid, and unexpected delays, Anna never took her eyes off the prize. She fought for me and she won every single motion we entered into. Hiring Anna Friedhoff as my divorce attorney was the best decision I’ve ever made in my life. If you are reading this review PLEASE do yourself a favor, stop immediately, pick up the phone and call her. Anna Friedhoff = WIN

The only thing worse than a custody battle is a custody battle throughout Covid. The courts were a nightmare and the process was so broken. With all of that said, Jonathan Corey guided me through it with poise, grace, patience, and professionalism. Without his guidance I cannot imagine how I would have gotten through it all. It was clear from the start that I could trust Jonathan throughout the process. Whenever anything seemed dire, he was able to calm my nerves by knowing the best play to lead with or react with. He did that all while being a human and showing empathy and understanding. I cannot thank him enough or recommend him more highly.

My situation was more complicated than usual, and I needed a well-experienced attorney who I could trust to leave my case in his hand. Mr.Corey was the 3rd attorney I spoke to, and I chose him to represent me right after an initial consultation with him. He was not only a smart, well-experienced but also a very nice and caring person. He genuinely cared about my situation and always supported me to help me get back on my feet. When I had to make a tough decision, he always gave me great advice and ensured that it would benefit me now and in the far future. Having someone who could look after you and remind you to hold your ground in emotional situations like this was essential during the case and I cannot thank him enough for what he has done for me and my son. I’m so happy I found him and worked with him. I strongly recommend him to anyone going through a tough time in life and wants to ensure that you are in good hands. Mr.Corey is ‘the one.’

After having had unpleasant consults with other lawyers who couldn't seem to wrap their heads around the idea that two women might be married and getting a divorce, it was important to me to find a lawyer who understood the queer community and London was that lawyer. She handled my divorce case and was indispensable in helping me get my kids back after my ex absconded with them and filed a baseless restraining order to prevent me from seeing them for more than a few hours a month under close supervision. She skillfully litigated the restraining order matter, even getting my ex to testify that she had no actual concerns about me that would warrant the order's restrictions. We were able to get a 50/50 parenting plan agreed to within a couple days of a judge dismissing the entire restraining order. As my ex continued to throw up roadblocks to avoid the even split we'd talked about, London was able to handle all of them and her priority was always ensuring equity and the wellbeing of my kids rather than resorting to petty tactics or advising that we respond to my ex's roadblocks with escalation. We were able to settle and avoid going to trial, but I know that if we had ended up going to trial, I would have been in good hands.

From my initial phone conference with London through the whole daunting divorce process, I felt heard and supported. London told me more than once that she was my advocate, and she followed through with that. She supported me in my decisions after presenting all legal angles and possible outcomes. She wanted the best for me. When I was in doubt about various issues, London was able to see through the muddle and had a positive outlook on my overall outcome. She always made me feel like I was her only client. When it came to mediation, London chose a very fair and balanced mediator who explained that not everything would go my way (or my ex-spouses way). Despite that, London fought as far as she could when it was needed. It was a long, slow day but when the mediator was consulting with the other side, London was always advising me on her next argument and strategy. London's work was incredibly thorough, timely and organized. I always felt extremely comfortable and confident with the quality of her work. London is truly trustworthy.

I started my divorce process in mid 2020, what a time to have to go through this process. But I don't think there's really a "good" time for such a thing. The original attorney I teamed up with at the beginning of my divorce, Myah Kehoe (Kehoe Moneyhun Law, LLC) which I recommend as well. That attorney recommended a handful of attorneys based on the particulars of my case. After consulting with each of these attorneys, I decided upon Jennifer (Jenny) Eadie and I'm glad I made that decision. My case was protracted (likely due to the pandemic), involving a non-responsive other party, and a lack of willingness to compromise. Jenny was highly skilled at taking over the case, getting up to speed, and communicating with both parties in a timely fashion. Jenny helped bring my case to a resolution and a positive outcome. If you want an attorney that's patient, polite, and efficient; then look no further. Jenny is it, I highly recommend Jenny Eadie as an attorney.

I hired Kevin Kelly In 2011 while I was enlisted in the military, stationed overseas, hadn’t seen my son in person for the better part of 2 years, and I was a single male at the time. Kevin always steered me in the right direction and warned me of all possible outcomes with my case. He always was straight forward and honest with me with everything, never leading me down a bad path once. I remember always getting off the phone with Kevin feeling a thousand times better knowing he was working his hardest for me. He always had my sons best interest in mind as well as mine. When it was all said and done I left the courthouse in absolute shock, Kevin had won me my case and more importantly got my son in my hands with custody in a stable home where I knew he was safe. I will forever be grateful for Kevin and the hours of hard work he put in for me.

I have hired Kevin multiple times for legal separation, divorce etc. He plans, executes and follows through exactly what he promises. More than that, he always went above and beyond to help guide me through the emotional, financial and psychological roller coaster that these cases bring with them. His advice and contacts (brokers, agents, finance) beat my expectations. He always was there for my smart, dumb and repeated questions I had in a world that quite frankly confuses me. We have worked together for 9 years and he is not only my attorney, he is my friend.

Without Westbrook I would be sitting in prison tonight. I have worked with her for over a year on my case and when I say that, what I mean is: she has dealt with me for over a year and worked on my case. Westbrook is the definition of left field, she comes up with stuff out of no where that makes you feel stupid for never thinking of yourself. In my year with her I definitely thought I finally had an idea of what sort of attorney she was and how she operates. NOPE! She suits up for court and it’s as if you hired a whole different woman! There were times in that court room I’d sworn I saw a cape around her. This woman is absolutely amazing and I owe my life to her, if I ever get falsely accused again there is no one else I would ever go to. EVER. If I moved across the country I’d make her get licensed there just to be my defense again. I gave this poor woman absolute hell for things that had nothing to do with her at times and yet she’d be up until 3am working on my case. She can seem a bit unorthodox but let me assure you there is a method to her madness and you do not want to be the one going against her in a court room because she works in the most unpredictable ways and then suddenly brings it all together and by the time you realize what she did it’s already over. I’m not saying I trust the process, but I do trust her and her process. You have the choice of who’s about to defend you and based on what you did or in my case what you are falsely accused of doing…. Trust me when I say that Westbrook is best bet I ever put my life on. She’s amazing, she’s the best, she’s going to get you through the nearly impossible,

Three years ago I was wrongfully convicted of crimes I did not commit. After winning an appeal I was assigned Westbrook. I was a problem client, I did not wanna wave my sixty day speedy trial rights to give her more time to work on my case all I saw was the thirty months I had been wrongfully imprisoned. Westbrook did her best and actually won my case and got me released from custody. After watching my previous attorney just roll over and show his belly during the first trial, it was refreshing just to see Westbrook fight, veraciously for my rights, to defend me with a tenacity of someone who honestly cares about doing their very best. I would say hands down Westbrook is the best lawyer in Oregon.

Marissa helped me with the last (I hope) of a series of many family / parenting plan matters that Easley Law represented me on throughout the years. Marissa quickly got up to speed on my case, the scope of the matter at hand, and the nuances and challenges with the opposing party. Marissa provided solutions and counsel with creativity and realistic approaches with great competence. She managed opposing counsel with respect and collegiality, yet very adeptly and assertively on my case's behalf. I also appreciate that Marissa was humble enough to research matters to ensure she had the latest and best information. My case included some uniqueness that required some extra research, and her assessment and subsequent strategy was right on, leaving opposing counsel's client without loopholes that were not in our child's best interest. Marissa's was assertive yet tactful, and I feel that she effectively led the process along without excessive costs or time, despite backups and delays on the opposing side and large court backlogs. When needed, Marissa could handily, kindly, and respectfully explain things that became frustrating or not realistic to me, and kept the case moving as effectively as possible. In other words, she quickly and effectively brought me "back down to earth" when things became intense, as it sometimes does in this process. I know I got the best outcome without excessive billing. Most importantly, the interests of my child prevailed to the greatest extent possible, thanks to her superior work and support. We are forever grateful to Marissa, and also to everyone at Easley Law.

If you are facing not one but multiple criminal charges (counts) involving the operation of a motor vehicle which carry the potential consequences of jail time and a big license suspension if convicted, there is good news. You can call Ben. Prior to facing this type of vexing ordeal, I had never been arrested in my lifetime. My case went all the way past a favorably conducted evidentiary hearing and legal conferences, just shy of having a 6-person jury trial scheduled with the Court over several months (longer than a year)—where Ben tirelessly, diligently, masterfully worked as the lead Attorney on defeating the entire case. All charges are being dismissed! Let's go from the beginning of this adversarial legal process, where the Office of Administrative Hearings for the DMW was moving to immediately suspend my drivers license within the first ten days of the custodial arrest. After reading a legal notice prepared by Ben and the owner of the law firm which was promptly delivered to the Prosecutor/Police in advance of the DMV suspension hearing, Police elected not to file a police report within the 10-day period required to seek a suspension of my license with the DMV. This procedural issue resulted in an immediate dismissal of the DMV Implied Consent Hearing case. This is the first victory achieved in a very short amount of time after retaining Ben as my lead Attorney on the overall matter. When you retain Ben as your legal advisor, you also receive the support of the entire team of lawyers at the law firm, including the owner of the law firm himself, Mark who has been in the business for 4 decades. Why were the overall results of the case so highly favorable like this? The Officer who charged me with the most serious count never actually conducted Field Sobriety Tests to determine if there was PROBABLE CAUSE to reasonably charge me with DUII. Ben highlighted this major mistake made by the Officer and crafted a plan on how exploit this major flaw to champion a cause for my vindication (legally, constitutionally, and according to statutory sources of case law), so that every advantage to my defense was methodically crafted. What happened next was at the evidentiary hearing, where Ben cross examined the Officer, up to the point just shy of impeaching the Officer as a witness having all of his credibility drained for his placement of false misleading evidence into a Sworn Affidavit for an unconstitutional Search Warrant. Ben effectively demonstrated why the Officer did this: BECAUSE HE DID NOT HAVE PROBABLE CAUSE for the highest count and charge of DUII from his own investigation. So, the Officer falsified and fabricated PROBABLE CAUSE by subsequently writing it into a misleading Sworn Affidavit. How did Ben point this out to the Court? The video evidence from the Police Body Cameras (presented in Court) did NOT match the false misleading fabricated written reported evidence the Officer placed into the misleading Sworn Affidavit. So yes, not just in Third-World countries can you get FRAMED, It happens like this right here in America practically every night and day. Did the Officer get fired? Of course not, Oregon has a super liberal jurisdiction here. The Judge, Prosecutor, and Administration for the Police Force all work under the same umbrella and they look out for each other, even when incompetent, dishonest Police Officers do things like Lying in a Sworn Affidavit to fabricate evidence. This is the definition for liberal. Liberal for them, not for the accused. The Court still wanted to Prosecute the case on all counts, even after the evidentiary hearing! The element of complexity was spiraling. Ben turned this foul ball into a home run! I'm grateful to have been represented by such a world class law firm. The owner Mark Cogan is one super cool cat, poised. Ben will crush with a velvet hammer making no sound to those doing things such as lying in a Sworn Affidavit.

I recently received a speeding ticket while driving through Oregon and reached out to this firm for assistance. I was connected with Kelli, who kindly helped me communicate with the court. Unfortunately, I learned that the court required in-person attendance, which left me feeling helpless as I reside out of state and couldn't attend. While searching for solutions, I came across numerous positive Google reviews detailing other clients' experiences. Many had shared how Blake assisted them in enrolling in a diversion program, which ultimately helped them dismiss their citations. Intrigued, I read through the information on their website about the diversion program and realized it might be the best option for me. With this newfound insight, I drafted a petition letter to the court. To my relief, the judge agreed to allow me into the program, promising to dismiss my citation upon completion of an online course and payment of the court fee. Though Blake couldn't assist me directly, the shared experiences and helpful articles truly guided me toward the best outcome. I am incredibly grateful for the support I received!

If you really want to stick it to your ex and you want that feeling that you beat them, this is the firm for you. This firm is effective! They will bend the truth for you in court and in numerous superfluous memos. They will bully your ex and drag out the process to ensure that your ex suffers. In fact, they copied me on an internal communication which showed that they will even lie to each other within their own firm. Now, when you come out of the divorce, they will have taken everything from you financially, but who cares when you succeeded in making your ex suffer and that their tactics make thing so toxic that you will hardly be able to co-parent with your ex in the future. To ensure this process drags out as long as possible, they will neglect to let you know that your ex has made offers to settle. For over two years, SKH will make no offers settle with your ex and they will encourage you to not accept any offers because why do that when they can make more money taking this to court. They have so many cases going to court that the judge rebuked SKH for delaying court for 4 months because they had so many court cases booked, but the judge can’t actually do anything to stop these grey area tactics, so it gives you more time to bully your ex! This firm will back you up and encourage you to take your ex for everything. And while this won’t let you move on with your life, who cares as long as you get to falsely believe that your ex is suffering more because of it. Thanks SKH! I don’t have anything left to pay you with anymore, but at least I can feel like my ex suffered.

Throughout our time together, she knew how to best communicate with me when I was feeling frazzled and was very patient when I need explanation. I felt like we were a team -- I knew my history/situation and she knew the law. As a result, we worked well together to make a strong settlement case. As things got more intense, and I often got overwhelmed, I was really happy to have her in my corner. She is calm, focused, smart, very capable and kind. I can't recommend her highly enough and am happy to speak more on the phone if anyone should want to know more.

Mark and his firm handled our case with professionalism and courtesy. We had so many questions and each and every one was answered in a timely and comprehensive manner. The outcome of our case was positive and we would recommend Mark and his associate, Tim Grishkevich, to anyone needing representation.

If you are facing not one but multiple criminal charges (counts) involving the operation of a motor vehicle which carry the potential consequences of jail time and a big license suspension if convicted, there is good news. You can call Ben and Mark. Prior to facing this type of vexing ordeal, I had never been arrested in my lifetime. My case went all the way past a favorably conducted evidentiary hearing and legal conferences, just shy of having a 6-person jury trial scheduled with the Court over several months (longer than a year)—where Ben and Mark tirelessly, diligently, masterfully worked as the lead Attorney on defeating the entire case. All charges are being dismissed! Thank you.

He doesn’t care! He sees dollar signs and tells me I should sue my past attorney for what she failed to include in my divorce. Doesn’t even want to look at the bank statements and my husbands Quicken account with my son’s savings account numbers, and my account numbers, set for download and transfer… which he did. He doesn’t care that my husband abused and stole from my kids and I, prior to our marriage. This attorney is book smart. Immature at life. Talks down to me as if I’m a child; I’m at least twice his senior. Arrogant firm; arrogant attorney.

If you are considering hiring C.J. Graves as your lawyer, I’d like to share my troubling experience working with him on a parenting plan modification which would result in a child support modification. Now, keep in mind, I have sole legal custody of my son. Unfortunately, C.J. satisfied all of the opposing party's requests for the provisions in the new supplemental judgement. Nothing we discussed and initially agreed between parties when we “settled” out of court was included in the judgement, except for the 50/50 that I agreed to. The opposing party submitted the judgement that they drafted as final. C.J. submitted the response which was disregarded by Judge Bailey and he signed the opposing parties draft as final. This did not include ANY of the agreed upon/revised provisions that we discussed. C.J. found out about this, called me and emailed me and said he wasn’t happy with the new judgment. However, he signed it without my knowledge and approval. From there, he was not able to discuss the damaging and inaccurate statements with opposing counsel. Not only did the child support modification not include the private health insurance I pay for my son, he also allowed the opposing party to include close to $800 in health care related expenses. He flat out told me he would get this fixed. That never happened. He didn’t even get the other party to agree to edit the start date that the new parenting plan started. This resulted in a 3-month retro for the other party- which was a lie. Either C.J. lacks knowledge of basic information on how to modify a child support payment and/or the ability to properly represent a client. How are basic, fundamental, and true facts not incorporated in a new judgement when you have a lawyer representing you and these were specific things I had to ask him to change? It appears that C.J. was very helpful in allowing the other party to achieve what they wanted. So, in essence, C.J. did not negotiate ANYTHING on my behalf. He did not do the work that I paid him for (negotiating and representing me) because the judgement says it all. This resulted in an inaccurate monthly child support payment, and C.J. knew it. There are additional factors that are influencing my rating and decision which I prefer to leave outside of this review. However, one of the most outstanding is his response time. I would not hear from him for 2 weeks, if not more. Part of his communications said that we shouldn’t “push it” or “upset them in any way,” if we wanted them to agree to consider changing anything (to the true information). This was concerning to me because C.J. constantly told me that the opposing counsel didn’t call him back or reply to his emails. His inability to communicate with opposing counsel set me back and put me in a very compromised position. C.J. was hired to negotiate and represent me. Unfortunately, I lost more than what rights I went in with, and he is very aware of this. At minimum to have the health care expense I pay for my son included in the child support calculator. I have always maintained health insurance for my son. Uninterrupted medical coverage. The lack of timely communication left me wondering for weeks if anything was happening and or going to change. He also made deceiving promises about outcomes that were valid and realistic. I walked out losing and 100% unsatisfied. This was a clear-cut case, and C.J. did not do his job. I truly felt neglected and that my case was not a priority for C.J. He was not able to achieve anything for me and the final judgement contained clauses that were never agreed upon. He was not able to negotiate anything for me. He even stated that in his conversations with opposing counsel, “We simply could not reach a resolution as to the issues”. Simply put, the other party was able to create a judgement that included everything they wanted (that was not agreed upon) and C.J. had no power to negotiate it.

C.J. Graves and Jaqueline Swanson-Graves are hands down the most thorough and highly educated team. They hold the bar of ethics extremely high and treated me with the upmost care and respect. I have 110% trust for the way they handled my case. C.J. Graves took my case on a Thursday, studied it over the weekend and won for me that next Tuesday. I described him as an angel with blazing swords. One could also call him a peaceful warrior, for every action, decision and advice he gave me was in the theme of being peaceful and winning without throwing mud. I am forever grateful that I had the honor of being represented by C.J. Graves.

Like the comment below, he was not worth what I paid. He often required that I wait way too long for responses to emails and calls and clearly was always preoccupied by somethings. Divorcing my wife cost way more than it should have.

No one wants to get divorced, and certainly no one wants to have a contentious divorce and custody battle. Walking into court, I never felt more confident thanks to Alex's hard work, preparation and caring communication throughout the whole process. Alex is incredibly smart, measured, thoughtful and has a personal nature that will make you feel at ease. But it's also his tenacity and doggedness that makes you feel confident you're in the right hands. I interviewed numerous lawyers before final landing on Alex and I am very thankful to have him on my team.

I hired David in February 2017 to manage a very difficult situation with my Dad who lived in Yamhill County at the time of his incident but for medical reasons we had to move him to Portland. David went out of his way to balance and mitigate the challenges of court appearances between Portland and McMinnville. He was professional at all times explaining the legal process, caring and understanding of our situation which was invaluable.

I recently hired David Celuch to fight a traffic ticket. He was professional and easy to talk to from start to finish. He was able to find a way to get the ticket completely dismissed which is the outcome we were hoping for. I feel like he is very attentive to detail and I am very pleased that I hired him. I would most definitely recommend him to anyone.

What a Domestic Violence Lawyer Can Do for You

A domestic violence lawyer provides legal assistance to individuals involved in cases of domestic abuse, whether you are a victim seeking protection or someone accused of domestic violence defending against the charges. These lawyers help with obtaining restraining orders (protective orders), representing clients in criminal court, and handling related family law issues such as child custody, divorce, and visitation rights.

If you are dealing with domestic violence, a lawyer can help protect your rights and navigate the legal system to ensure your safety or defend you if you’re falsely accused.

When Should I Hire a Domestic Violence Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a domestic violence lawyer if you are:

  • A Victim of Domestic Violence:
    • Filing for a protective order (restraining order): If you need immediate protection from an abuser, a lawyer can help you file for a protective order, which legally requires the abuser to stay away from you and refrain from contacting you.
    • Divorce or separation due to abuse: If domestic violence is a factor in your relationship, a lawyer can help you pursue a divorce or legal separation and ensure that you are protected throughout the process.
    • Child custody and visitation issues: A lawyer can help you secure custody of your children and limit or restrict the abuser’s visitation rights to protect the safety of your children.
    • Filing criminal charges: If you are pursuing criminal charges against the abuser, a domestic violence lawyer can work with law enforcement and prosecutors to ensure the case is handled properly.
    • Assistance with safety planning: A lawyer can advise on the legal steps to create a safety plan, including securing temporary housing, and taking steps to protect you and your family.
  • Accused of Domestic Violence:
    • Defending against criminal charges: If you’ve been accused of domestic violence, a lawyer can defend your case, challenge the evidence, and represent you in court. If possible, the lawyer can help get charges reduced or dismissed.
    • Challenging a restraining order: If someone has obtained a protective order against you, a lawyer can help you contest the order to prevent it from negatively impacting your life, including your employment and child custody rights.
    • Dealing with family law issues: Domestic violence allegations can affect child custody, divorce, and property division. A lawyer can represent your interests in family court and ensure that your parental rights are protected.
    • Avoiding criminal record implications: A lawyer can work to minimize the impact of the allegations on your record, which can affect your employment, housing, and future legal matters.

Hiring a lawyer at the earliest stages can help ensure your rights are protected and the case is handled effectively, whether you are seeking protection or defending against accusations.

What Does a Domestic Violence Lawyer Do?

A domestic violence lawyer provides various legal services depending on the specifics of your case. These responsibilities often include:

  • For Victims:
    • Filing for protective orders: A lawyer can help victims of domestic violence obtain temporary or permanent restraining orders, which provide legal protection by restricting the abuser’s access to you and your children.
    • Representing you in divorce and child custody matters: Domestic violence often leads to divorce or separation, and a lawyer can represent you in family court to protect your assets, secure custody of your children, and arrange spousal and child support.
    • Criminal representation: Lawyers work with law enforcement and prosecutors to pursue criminal charges against the abuser, ensuring that you are informed and supported throughout the legal process.
    • Safety planning and legal advice: Lawyers provide advice on how to stay safe legally and can assist in securing temporary housing, providing guidance on how to leave abusive situations safely.
  • For the Accused:
    • Defending against charges: A lawyer will build a defense by investigating the case, gathering evidence, and challenging the claims made against you. If necessary, the lawyer can negotiate with prosecutors to reduce charges or penalties.
    • Challenging protective orders: If a restraining order has been placed against you, a lawyer can contest the order and present evidence to defend against it, aiming to minimize its impact on your life and reputation.
    • Handling related family law issues: Lawyers help defend against domestic violence allegations in divorce, child custody, and visitation disputes, working to protect your parental rights and reputation.
    • Preventing long-term consequences: A lawyer will work to protect you from the long-term consequences of a domestic violence conviction, such as a criminal record that could affect employment, housing, and more.

How Are Domestic Violence Lawyers Paid?

Domestic violence lawyers generally charge for their services in different ways depending on the case's complexity and the type of legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many domestic violence lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location. Hourly rates are common for both criminal defense and family law matters.
  • Flat fee: For specific tasks, such as filing a restraining order or defending against a straightforward domestic violence charge, some lawyers offer a flat fee that covers all legal work related to that service.
  • Retainer: In complex cases, such as those involving criminal charges, divorce, and custody disputes, a lawyer may require a retainer fee, which is an upfront payment that covers future legal services.
  • Pro bono or reduced fees: Some domestic violence lawyers provide pro bono (free) or reduced-fee services to victims of domestic abuse who cannot afford legal representation.

It’s important to discuss fees during your consultation to ensure you understand how much your case will cost and what payment options may be available.

How Much Does a Domestic Violence Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a domestic violence lawyer depends on the complexity of your case, the lawyer’s experience, and the type of legal work required. General cost estimates include:

  • Restraining orders: The legal fees for filing a protective or restraining order typically range from $500 to $2,500, depending on whether the case requires a hearing.
  • Criminal defense: If you’re defending against domestic violence charges, legal fees may range from $2,500 to $15,000 or more, depending on whether the case goes to trial and the severity of the charges.
  • Family law issues: Legal fees for divorce, child custody, and other family law issues related to domestic violence can range from $3,000 to $15,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the case.
  • Hourly rates: Domestic violence lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour for their services, with more experienced lawyers charging higher rates.

Always ask for a detailed cost estimate during your consultation to understand the total cost of legal services.

Top Questions to Ask a Domestic Violence Lawyer

Before hiring a domestic violence lawyer, it’s important to ask key questions to ensure they have the right experience and approach for your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with domestic violence cases?
Ensure that the lawyer has handled domestic violence cases similar to yours, whether you’re a victim or the accused.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, flat fees, or a retainer, and ask for a detailed cost estimate.
  3. What is the likely outcome of my case?
Ask the lawyer for an honest assessment of your case, including potential challenges and expected outcomes.
  4. How long will the process take?
Domestic violence cases vary in length, so ask the lawyer how long they expect the process to last and what might cause delays.
  5. Will I need to appear in court?
Ask if your participation in court is required, and how the lawyer plans to represent you during hearings or trials.
  6. What steps should I take to protect myself or my rights?
Whether you’re a victim seeking protection or defending against allegations, ask the lawyer how they will help you navigate the situation.

How to Check the Credibility of a Domestic Violence Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable domestic violence lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Check their bar status: Verify with your state bar association that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for domestic violence experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in domestic violence cases and have successfully handled cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients say about their experience with the lawyer.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have been involved in domestic violence cases.
  • Check for memberships in relevant organizations: Look for certifications or memberships in family law or domestic violence advocacy groups, such as the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV).

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a domestic violence lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • For Victims:
    • Details of the abuse: Prepare a detailed account of the abuse, including dates, locations, and descriptions of any injuries or threats.
    • Police reports and medical records: Bring copies of any police reports, medical records, or photographs that document the abuse.
    • Legal filings: If you have already filed for a restraining order or been involved in any legal proceedings, bring copies of those documents.
    • Questions about your safety and legal options: Be ready to ask about the best steps to protect yourself and your family, as well as what legal actions you should pursue.
  • For the Accused:
    • Details of the allegations: Prepare a detailed account of the incident or allegations against you, including any evidence or witnesses that support your defense.
    • Legal documents: Bring any legal documents you have received, such as a restraining order, criminal charges, or child custody filings.
    • Questions about your defense: Prepare questions about the legal process, possible penalties, and how the lawyer plans to defend your case.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your situation and provide the best possible legal advice.
