I am surprised there are not a long list of 5 star reviews for Kathy Belcher. I suspect because she does not ask for reviews or work this into her business plan as other companies do. Kathy is an incredible estate planning attorney. I know a handful of which I like them all, but I chose to work with Kathy recently as she came recommended by a family member who was very pleased. I can certainly understand why now. She was extremely efficient and did not burn up the hours or clock to get a higher bill. I was pleased with all areas of service, efficiency, communication, price, and ultimately finished product. We will be going back for further work to be done in the future. I highly recommend her - especially if you are in the market for a woman owned business and attorney.

Gail who I worked with has been like rocky in the ring helping me with a landlord who has been very stressful to get anything out of and if you need help for housing issues she's been nothing but spectacular. Always felt comfortable when we would speak, and she truly cares about her clients. I hadn't had the pleasure of speaking with John but thanks to them I have less on my plate to deal with.

I found NW Legacy Law after an extensive search across many Portland area law firms to handle my estate planning requirements. Beyond traditional I assets I hold some unique assets that require an openness to these special investments. Rather than stating they were not comfortable including these elements in my plan, NW Legacy Law listened to my needs, and how I wanted them to be involved, what my plan was for them to be included and how they could assist. Their openness and willingness to stretch beyond the ordinary set them apart from the fifteen (15) other firms I requested to consider my estate planning requirements. If you’re looking for a firm that are open, interested in you and your needs, one that focuses on the client rather than applying a cookie cutter approach within their comfort zone, reach out to them, it was worth my search for a firm that are a cut above the ordinary.

Brian Thompson guided me through dealing with my mother's estate. We had an initial consultation where he told me to keep excellent records. I had no idea how important that emphasis would be at the time, but after that I made sure to keep everything in a spreadsheet. I don't know how I could have done this without Brian and the tax professional we used. Along the way I found the process complicated due to some weird small investments my mother had, and selling her house. It was not a huge estate, but it was complicated. Every time I asked Brian a question in email he answered back with clear recommendations. He even called me once when he sensed that I was confused. I would use him again.

While Estate planning is not my favorite activity, the folks at Edgel Law really made the whole experience much easier. From Michael's first welcome consult, which set the tone and assured me they would listen and take in my circumstances, through reviewing written drafts to the final signing, I felt my questions were heard and addressed. At the final signing, Heather did a super job of going at the right speed and making sure I understood the legalese - she made it human. I left happy and proud of myself for finally getting it done!

Tony Abrams and Miwa Soto helped me feel safe and calm about the financial aspects of my dad's passing. Tony listened carefully, answered all my questions, and provided further resources. High points included Tony's diagram of assets on the whiteboard, and all three of us finding the funny side of Dad's handwritten additions to the POA making it unenforceable. (That's Dad!) Their website page explains Why We Are Different and I 100% agree. "Founder Tim Nay came to the law as an experienced psychologist and licensed clinical social worker." Erin's firm handled the probate for my brother's estate. She took on a difficult estate with mountains of debt, one which I thought would be insolvent, and through skill and negotiation was able to secure a sizable inheritance for my brother's two children. The best possible outcome. Throughout the process she and her excellent team were in constant communication with me, informing me of every step, answering my many questions, and dealing with numerous other issues well beyond my grasp. An agreement with an attorney in the office of Mayor Law was signed 2022-Oct giving Mayor Law proof of representation in an auto claim. Officially PIP was exhausted 25 April 2024. May 16 the attorney received digitally all payments; bills, notes, coding. At that time we should have sent the demand letter. I waited until July 4, 2024, contacted her, accepting the $3000 offer from April. I signed an agreement 29-July-2024. She received $3870 for costs and fees. I contacted her August 20 asking when I would get the settlement. She had been waiting on Progressive to update the Medicare liability section. She told me she still needed lien information on Medicaid, DHS, Medicare, and Med Advantage - and the 3 small businesses that treated me. I was 7 hours on the phone 20-23 August 2024 to contact insurances about liens on the settlement $3000: Medicare over the phone told me there was no lien (2nd payor and there was no hospitalization ZERO came in the mail today 9/9/2024). I called and got the procedure and fax number to Recovery for Mayor Law. Email attached attorney requesting I provide all Providence visits, summaries, billing. Attached ZERO owing PHP. DHS Medicaid (they faxed info right away which could have taken a month) in response to long email that EOB shows owing. My 3 small business folk who only take cash unless it was PIP were asked to provide the same information already given by my insurance carrier on May 16 to the attorney. 9/6/2024 Friday I received call stating the duo Advantage and Medicaid for medicare members NEVER create liens but would reversed to provider. Received a lien for $11.08 for xray would be paid correctly if Ayin Health Solutions would submit through Providence and Medicaid. Seems Mayor Law made a deal to pay 11.08 out of settlement without first notifying me! I have to deal with an attorney that would do that! HOW come they continue to argue they are still searching for a lien to take out of the settlement. It gives me the creeps. Ayin Health Solutions understood the attorney did not do the research before negotiating the cost to be 11.08 for the xray. They are voiding the lien today with Phia Group LISTEN. Mayor Law did not do the work she agreed to and I was on the phone 7 hours beginning it. Mayor Law is taking the 11.08 out of settlement anyway! Trashy company.

Leonard Williamson has represented me twice now— once for a personal matter, once for a business matter, quite successfully both times. I sincerely appreciate his direct, straightforward style of communication. He told me what we could do, what we could not do, and helped manage realistic expectations and outcome. His legal staff is highly communicative and competent. His billing was reasonable; I never felt like he was disrespectful with my time or my money. I highly recommend Mr. Williamson, and will gladly use him again in the future for any legal needs I may have. In a world where lawyers are nearly universally detestable, it’s a breath of fresh air to find one that is the opposite.

Mr. Van Ness, is not my attorney, however right at this very moment he has over $60,000, that belongs to me and he refuses to answer when I calls, won't return calls from messages I've left and won't reply to emails! After reading the below reviews, I wouldn't recommend him to anyone simply based on how I'm being treated (as an non-client that he's just holding money up from) and I happen to know he's overpriced (I've seen the charges!).

Excellent Lawyer! Laurel Hook will definitely take care of you during a very difficult time in your life along with your family dynamics changing. - She along with her team are absolutely amazing! She definitely knows the intricacies of the divorce laws and is there to represent you to the fullest. She talked me off of ledges on many occasions, I came into her office terrified of filing for divorce but knew I had to and she walked me thru a very complicated process paying attention to so many details, I had no clue about. She explained her strategies to me in ways I completely understood and felt comfortable with. I finalized my divorce with confidence due to her support and knowledge. Her team is there to come beside you which I was very thankful for. If you want the best lawyer, go with Laurel Hook esp if you divorce is complicated with a business or other stuff. *Empathetic, Effective, and Truly Exceptional - Thank You, Jamie!** From the moment I stepped into Jamie's office, I knew I had found not just a lawyer, but a fierce advocate who would stand by my side during one of the most challenging times of my life. Facing a divorce as a significant underdog against a former top CEO, I was overwhelmed and financially vulnerable. Jamie Svisco took on my case with a level of compassion and dedication that was nothing short of life-changing. Throughout the grueling year and several months of proceedings, Jamie fought relentlessly for my best interests, guided by her deep understanding of Oregon State law and a genuine concern for my well-being. Despite the daunting circumstances and the complexities of my case, Jamie’s strategy and perseverance led to a favorable outcome that I couldn't have imagined at the start. Being left in shock and penniless after a betrayal is a nightmare no one should face alone. Jamie made sure I was not just represented, but cared for. Her professionalism and empathy have restored my faith in justice and the belief that there are people who do what is right above all else. Thank you, Jamie, for being my champion in the courtroom and my unwavering support system throughout this process. Your expertise and kindness have helped me close a painful chapter and look forward to new beginnings. I am immensely grateful and would recommend Jamie to anyone facing similar challenges.

I hired Mr Garcia to help me deal with some bullies in my trailer park. We scheduled a mtg with the owner and manager, but he criticized me in front of them more that once. When I asked him his opinion on something, he replied he had not been listening (in front of the people I am trying to communicate my wishes to). He added nothing to the meeting, and I was left to list my complaints and negotiate by my self. Two weeks after the mtg he could not recall the details of the mtg when I asked him about it. For all of that he charged me $1500.00 He was more excited to meet the wealthy owner of the park than to see that I got a fair deal.

I attempted four times, to get my case herd. Spoke with first lady that was headed off to vacation. She let me no that she will pass my message off to lady on the next Monday. Asking a few times if it made since, if she got enough info for me to have to wait three days for someone to contact me.. Never happened..I called again, this lady didn't see the notes taken, asked me to explain.. once again as I am in need of help, says I'll call you tomorrow, never did. I call again, an tried connecting online twice at this point.. Fourth call I have to explain situation to be relayed to someone who might have time to hear her as soon as he was free to do so, to expect a call in morning if not that day. Don't not hear a word back as I truly needed the direction or even a simple no but maybe try this person. Kinda made me feel unjusted as I still do, still can't seem to say the right words to have a lawyer call me back for a true consultation. By the reviews I see a great group of people ... First let me say that in my business I have had to deal with lawyers for over 30 years. Please be very very careful before engaging with this attorney. He will have you sign a fee agreement that is complicated and overly detailed as to how billing is done. That should have been my clue to walk away but had already started the process with him and he is a knowledgeable lawyer in elder law. Unfortunately, He did research ( which is in the fee agreement ) at his discretion but in our case was a long list of rabbit hole research and “what if’s” that he admitted would most likely not happen and I never asked him to check on. It is Then charged us!! I asked him to write a simple short friendly letter to medicaid to feel out a situation that had most likely been resolved already but I wanted to be sure. He charged for listening to messages, and getting them from his assistant who got what I said wrong several times! He also charges for emails. He also charged me for a synopsis of our first meeting that cost more than the first initial meeting! I did not ask for that synopsis I took notes of my own. In the end I never got what I needed and was afraid to make notes on the draft since the first time I asked for two tiny changes his “research “ cost ME almost $800! In my experience he does not stay on track and do just the task requested. I say stay away unless you have money to burn. Thousands billed to me for what should have been a few hundred dollars in my opinion and experience:

My mother (who is 82 years old) approached him when she was advised to file a petition for guardianship & conservatorship for me (which, in and of itself, is ludicrous). She did so because he was already her attorney, having drawn up her will. However, he never even met with her in person, leaving it to his assistant (a paralegal, I presume). Secondly, once she did approach his office (knowing little to nothing about what the process entailed, let alone what the ramifications were), they never explained to her what guardianship or conservatorship meant, the legal process involved, the ramifications would be for her (let alone me!!!!!). They did not even tell her how much they would charge, whether there would be a retainer fee or whether they charged by the hour. Now that I have legally filed an objection to her petition and she has been made aware of what this really means (thanks to other people, including myself!), she told her attorney she wished to withdraw her petition. Broesder's office, however, urged her to continue the petition in spite of this, telling her that if she didn't go through with it, it would "cost her far more money" if she were ever to file it again. I, in the meantime, contacted an attorney to find out what my legal options were (especially since, although I have requested Jackson Circuit Court to appoint an attorney for me-- especially in view of the fact that money is an issue for both my mother and me...) who informed me that the whole petition was ludicrous and I needed to have my mother withdraw the petition ASAP (my hearing is scheduled for Sept 23!!!). My mother called Broesder's office that very afternoon (two days ago), spoke with the same assistant (Melissa), who informed her that her office would be "impossible" (!!!) to withdraw the petition unless my mother coughed up the $2000 she owed them!!

Jeffrey failed me in every way and it's my opinion that he lacked empathy or respect for the difficulties I was facing. It is also my honest opinion that I do not recommend him for legal services. He took advantage of me during a time I was vulnerable, while incurring excessive fees without providing the help I needed. Jeffrey Frasier increased his wages in the middle of our litigation without proper notice. He racked up a higher price tag with tasks that should have been completed in a shorter time frame, especially with his background and experience. He added billable hours to my invoice, then later sued me for his fees. He made no reasonable offers to settle our fee dispute, and even failed to attend our scheduled mediation. When making an important decision to hire a lawyer to represent your important legal matters... you need to ask yourself..... do you want someone who is willing to bring a suit against the client vs. assigning their fee claims to a collection agency? I really wish I would have done my homework, before being damaged and financially ruined by Jeffrey Frasier

We had contacted Jeffrey when we were referred to him by another Oregon lawyer & after I read about him on the site FindLaw. He is extremely courteous, very knowledgeable, sharp minded and is a very good listener. He acted promptly with our case and was able to put our minds at ease with a very stressful situation. His charges were very reasonable and affordable; We were very delighted with his services and would definitely rehire him again as well as recommend him to others.

I have been involved with a case for which Jeffrey Frasier was the attorney. Unfortunately, I found him to be unfriendly and somewhat terse. Some of the clients he works for are very unprofessional and it made the entire process difficult for everyone involved. This was the first time I had been involved with his group, and unfortunately I found it to be a troublesome experience and I would not recommend working with them.

What an Elder Law Lawyer Can Do for You

An elder law lawyer specializes in legal issues that affect older adults, their families, and caregivers. These lawyers handle a broad range of topics, including estate planning, Medicaid and Medicare, long-term care planning, guardianship, elder abuse, and retirement planning. The goal of an elder law lawyer is to protect the rights, finances, and well-being of elderly individuals and to help them plan for future healthcare and financial security.

If you or a loved one is aging and facing challenges related to healthcare, finances, or legal matters, an elder law lawyer can provide essential guidance to protect your rights and interests as you age.

When Should I Hire an Elder Law Lawyer?

Hiring an elder law lawyer can be beneficial in many situations where older adults need help with legal, financial, or healthcare-related decisions. Common reasons to hire an elder law lawyer include:

  • Estate planning: If you want to create or update a will, set up trusts, or ensure that your assets are distributed according to your wishes, an elder law lawyer can help with comprehensive estate planning.
  • Medicaid and Medicare planning: If you need help qualifying for Medicaid to cover long-term care or need advice on navigating Medicare benefits, a lawyer can guide you through the application process and protect your assets.
  • Long-term care planning: If you’re concerned about paying for nursing home care or assisted living, a lawyer can help you create a financial plan and explore options for government assistance.
  • Guardianship or conservatorship: If a family member is unable to make decisions due to age-related cognitive issues, an elder law lawyer can assist in setting up legal guardianship or conservatorship to ensure their care.
  • Elder abuse and exploitation: If you or a loved one is experiencing physical, emotional, or financial abuse, an elder law lawyer can help you take legal action to stop the abuse and recover damages.
  • Retirement planning: Elder law lawyers can assist with planning for retirement, including managing pensions, Social Security, and other retirement income.
  • Special needs planning: If you have a disabled family member who requires special care, an elder law lawyer can help create trusts or other legal arrangements to ensure their long-term financial and healthcare needs are met.

What Does an Elder Law Lawyer Do?

An elder law lawyer provides a wide range of legal services to help older adults and their families navigate the complexities of aging, healthcare, and estate planning. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Drafting wills and trusts: Creating legal documents that outline how an individual’s assets will be distributed after death, ensuring that their wishes are honored.
  • Medicaid and Medicare planning: Helping clients protect their assets while qualifying for government benefits to cover healthcare and long-term care costs.
  • Establishing guardianships: Assisting families in setting up guardianship or conservatorship for loved ones who are unable to make decisions due to mental or physical incapacity.
  • Protecting against elder abuse: Investigating claims of elder abuse or financial exploitation and representing the victim in legal actions to stop the abuse and seek compensation.
  • Planning for long-term care: Developing strategies to cover the costs of nursing homes, assisted living, and other long-term care options without exhausting the elder’s financial resources.
  • Managing probate and estate administration: Guiding families through the probate process to ensure that the decedent’s assets are distributed according to the law and their wishes.
  • Setting up advance directives: Helping clients establish healthcare directives and powers of attorney to ensure their medical and financial decisions are carried out if they become incapacitated.

How Are Elder Law Lawyers Paid?

Elder law lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the type of legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many elder law lawyers charge by the hour, especially for tasks such as drafting documents, handling legal disputes, or providing ongoing legal advice. Hourly rates typically range from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Flat fee: For specific tasks, such as drafting a will or setting up a trust, some lawyers charge a flat fee. This can range from $500 to $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the estate plan.
  • Retainer: For long-term legal representation, such as managing a trust or handling guardianship matters, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers future legal work.
  • Contingency fee: In some elder abuse or financial exploitation cases, a lawyer may work on a contingency fee basis, meaning they only get paid if they recover compensation for the client. This fee is typically a percentage of the settlement or damages awarded.

Be sure to discuss fees with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand how you will be billed and what the total cost of services might be.

How Much Does an Elder Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an elder law lawyer varies depending on the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the fee structure. General cost estimates include:

  • Simple estate planning: Drafting basic documents, such as a will or power of attorney, may cost between $500 and $2,000, depending on the complexity of the client’s assets and wishes.
  • Complex estate planning: Setting up more advanced estate plans, such as revocable or irrevocable trusts, Medicaid planning, or special needs trusts, can range from $2,000 to $10,000 or more.
  • Guardianship or conservatorship: Legal fees for setting up guardianship or conservatorship often range from $2,000 to $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the case and whether disputes arise.
  • Medicaid planning: Legal fees for Medicaid planning can range from $1,500 to $10,000, depending on the level of asset protection needed and the complexity of the individual’s financial situation.

Always ask for an estimate of fees during your initial consultation to ensure you understand how much the legal services will cost.

Top Questions to Ask an Elder Law Lawyer

Before hiring an elder law lawyer, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure they have the experience and expertise needed to handle your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with elder law cases?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's estate planning, Medicaid applications, or elder abuse claims.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or a retainer, and ask for a detailed estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the best approach for my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your situation and what legal strategies the lawyer recommends.
  4. How long will the process take?
Whether it’s drafting an estate plan or setting up a guardianship, ask the lawyer how long they expect the process to take.
  5. Will you handle my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may handle parts of the case. Make sure you know who will be working on your case directly.
  6. What documents should I bring to the consultation?
Ask the lawyer what documentation or information you should prepare for your consultation, such as medical records, financial statements, or prior legal documents.

How to Check the Credibility of an Elder Law Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable elder law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Check their bar status: Verify with your state bar association that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for elder law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in elder law and have experience with cases similar to yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on elder law issues.
  • Check for certifications: Look for certifications or affiliations with organizations such as the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA), which can indicate the lawyer’s dedication to elder law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with an elder law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Existing estate planning documents: If you have a will, trust, or power of attorney in place, bring copies for the lawyer to review.
  • Financial records: Provide details of your assets, including bank accounts, investments, real estate, and retirement accounts, as well as any debts.
  • Medical information: If the case involves guardianship or Medicaid planning, bring relevant medical records that detail the individual's health condition and care needs.
  • Insurance policies: Bring information about health insurance, long-term care insurance, and any other relevant policies.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about your legal needs, the process, and the lawyer’s fees.
  • List of family members or beneficiaries: Prepare a list of the individuals you want to include in your estate plan or who will be affected by the legal process.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your situation more effectively and receive the best legal advice tailored to your needs.
