Anderson Law helped my family at a difficult time when we were overwhelmed by numerous legal, financial, and health care questions. It is not easy to find a law firm with so much experience in the specialized area of elder law, and I can confidently say that they are experts in their field. Linda Anderson and her team were honest and professional and treated us with the utmost courtesy and respect.

Thoughtful, thorough, and kind folks - Anderson Elder Law helped my family think through (and then drafted on our behalf) legal documents for our unique, somewhat complicated family situation. They then made signing and notarizing the documents at their office simple and efficient, while taking time to clearly answer every question we had along the way.

From the start, the lawyer who took our case was very professional and showed a genuine interest in my case. He took time to explain the legal ins and outs we could expect and answered all our questions. The firm gives a year to change things without charging you again. This, is very helpful financially, and I do appreciate it very much. All of the people we have met there, are very professional, helpful and friendly. I do recommend this firm for all your needs especially for us senior citizens. My very special thanks to Mr. Alexander DeLucca!

We had our wills, POAs and special needs trust completed with this firm and could not be happier. They answered all of our many questions and we never felt hurried or like we were taking too much of their time. Jenna Franks was our attorney and I could not be more appreciative of the advice, her patience and professionalism. I would not hesitate to use them again for any of our legal needs.

I contacted Steve Zelinger when I had some questions regarding my grandfather's estate. I learned about him through Avvo, and contacted him to see if he could help me figure things out. He promptly contacted me. Steven is an excellent communicator. He was able to take legal concepts and explain them in plain-english, much better than other attorneys I had contacted. He was very thoughtful and thorough in his answers. I did not feel rushed on the phone with him. I would definitely recommend Steven Zelinger

I have worked with Shari on a personal family matter and she was fantastic - professional, firm, yet kind and always available to help through the next step in the process. She had a great sense of what the potential outcomes were going to look like and had a perfect rapport with the arbiters in the case. I highly recommend her if you are looking for someone to lead you reassuringly through a complicated legal process.

I met Matthew Kikta at Julian Grey Associates in 2016 when he put together an Asset Protection Trust and associated documents (POA, Last Will & Testament, etc.) for my elderly parents. Matthew is very knowledgeable and professional. When my parents passed in 2022, he helped me by submitting the Inheritance Tax return to the state. Matthew always responded quickly to any emails I sent to him (questions I had regarding how to handle things after my parents passed). I strongly recommend Matthew to handle any needs associated with Elder Law.

Attorney Justin Smith represented me in 3 different legal matters over the course of 3 months—each one with likely (and, in one case, mandatory) jail time. He has done what I thought was the impossible and avoided me serving any time of incarceration. He adjusted his schedule to attend a hearing of mine with less than 24 hours notice. He is extremely intelligent and personable. I was able to call or text him at any time of the day, and he always promptly responded. He was always early for court, as well as very prepared for whatever proceeding was taking place that day. I feel forever indebted to Justin for what he has done for me and my family. I would strongly recommend his services to anybody—and I plan to do so.

My husband and I recently utilized Mr Pierson and his firm for wills, power of attorney, medical POA etc. From the initial consultation to the process of drawing up the documents through the signing of the documents, we were thoroughly pleased with Mr. Pierson's attention to detail and explanation of each of the documents. Planning for these things is never an enjoyable prospect; however, Mr. Pierson and his staff made the process seamless. Yes, it is not inexpensive to have all this legal work done, but knowing that as spouses and parents we are set with all needed legal papers if something would happen gives us such peace of mind. In addition, both my husband and I had some questions regarding our elderly mothers and the financial aspects of their care, and Mr. Pierson was able to provide some great advice. Finally, Mr. Pierson's staff are very helpful and responsive when it came to scheduling appointments.

Ken saved my you know what, u got hit by a motorcycle in my Mustang and the officer tried to blame me for it by citing me with careless driving (which is ridiculous as it wasn't my fault) and window tinting (only lightly on my side windows only.) Ken questioned the officer in court and long story short the officer didn't have his story together (as Ken proved) and the judge found me not guilty on both counts! Not to mention he saved me a fortune on lawyer fees, court costs, and fines! Very professional and very knowledgeable, definitely has your best interests (and wallet) at heart! I will call him every time I need legal advice from now on! Hopefully I don't need to though! BIG thank you to Kenneth for going above and beyond and helping me out, he creates a whole new level of confidence!

Ralph and Chloe exhibited exemplary skill, wisdom, dedication, and knowledge of their craft as they successfully won me a five figure sum of damages from the City of Bethlehem's insurance. Many other attorney's with which I consulted on the same matter were dubious as to their ability to provide what Mr. Bellafatto and his staff made look easy to obtain. Mr. Bellafatto is an honest counselor and will not promise that which he believes he can't deliver, while at the same time showing patience throughout the entire process. His ability to deal with me as a client on a people level was reassuring and contributed to what was a much different attorney-client relationship than I've previously experienced. If your case has solid evidence and is free of frivolity then I highly recommended you consider consulting with Ralph and his staff on your matter of inquiry. You can be assured that Ralph will treat you with respect and empathy while also being honest about what you can expect regarding your matter. Ralph and his staff were both highly professional as well as personable, and they were able to successfully get me the compensation I needed as quickly and efficiently as was possible. Again, I offer my highest recommendation regarding the skill and experience of this law office.

Hello, My name is Michele Calp. I am the Power of Attorney for my sister who is in a nursing home. My niece and I were in the terrible position of having to find a nursing home for my sister who has dementia. We were not in the position to pay privately for her nursing care, which meant we we would have to apply for Medicaid. We attended a seminar on Elder Care Planning that Bellomo was holding. We set up a meeting and from that point decided to have them work with us. And we are glad we did. The work that is involved in getting the paper work together to apply is daunting. They took so much pressure off of our shoulders. The people there are so easy to work with and make you feel that they will do all they can to help you. Thank you.

She took the time to understand our immediate needs yet keep an eye on what we would need to do in the future. Our interaction from beginning to end was pleasant and timely, and we left feeling safe in our conversation and decisions. I would highly recommend Whitney to any new families who need to set up the proper channels to ensure their children are secure in the event of any tragedies.

Having recently gone through a divorce and the death of a parent, I've had to get my financial house in order. Part of this is estate planning for myself and children. I could not be more satisfied with engaging in this process with Whitney. From the outset, Whitney clearly explained all angles I'd want to consider as we prepared my will and power of attorney documents. Her clear communication and attention to detail made all of this much easier. As a firm, Unruh, Turner, Burke, and Frees has helpful worksheets and booklets that detail the estate planning process. I easily understood what needed to be done on my end. Beyond that, scheduling appointments and dealing with a reschedule went very smoothly. The office experience itself was pleasant; I was treated with courtesy and enjoyed my tea and dark chocolate, as well as the historic building. I didn't think I would enjoy estate planning, but Whitney and her firm exceeded my expectations, and I actually did! I would definitely recommend Whitney to anyone looking for the best possible estate planning experience.

Attorney Hogan was recommended to me by a friend. I am so lucky! Her office staff, Jennifer and Autumn, were always wonderful. Attorney Hogan, Jennifer, and Autumn always answered my questions quickly with honesty and professionalism. I will pass on her name. People always told me that lawyers were only after your money, no way! Attorney Hogan main goal was to get the job done and she did this with top of the line knowledge. As someone before me posted, it is in her blood.

I have been a client with Theresa Hogan for 3 years. She is very knowledgable, efficient and compassionate with what was a delicate guardianship matter. She is competent and impressive in court and from the interactions that I've personally seen, appears to be well-respected by other attorneys. I would not hesitate to recommend Theresa Hogan. Her paralegal, Jennifer, is excellent as well. I am highly pleased.

I have retained T for over 15 years or so. I'd like to think I can judge an attorney's quality. Through the years, I have worked and been friends with numerous attorneys who are considered excellent by their own peers....including Harvard Law, major Wall St firms and Europe in many facets of the practice. Further, my father was in the judiciary and I think I have a pretty good understanding of what it takes to be exceptional. If someone asks me who my attorney is (although I use several for various specialties,) I say Theresa. T has gone above and beyond so many times for friends and myself. If I chose one special quality in addition to her utter competency and professionalism it is TRUST. I have known T's family since I was a child and law is in their blood. Just good people. We have all heard the nefarious remarks about attorney's and their kinship to sharks. T couldn't be farther from this stigma. I sat with Theresa this week to discuss some business matters and it was more like having coffee with a friend. No rush. I have walked courthouses with Theresa, and, it is obvious she is well known and well respected by the many walking the halls. And, the bonus is Autumn and Jen are the best! I noted the comments by the person (since disproven) which said she did not return calls, etc. Hello? Have you ever worked with an atty before? An atty does not call back unless they have something to tell you. Think about it.....legal wheels turn slow...it saves you billing for wasted phone time . A unique thing with T's staff is they are "up-to-speed" at all times....I can't tell you how many times I have called with a question and they dealt with it in a 30-second call. You won't get that with most attorneys. The office is run like a family....just what you want when dealing with nerve-wracking issues. Professional, classy, thorough....pals. Recommended unequivocally.

I contacted two lawyers to help me with my Will before I got to Atty. Stump. Neither of them wanted to zero in solely on my specific need but rather wanted to include other issues which I had already dealt with. When I contacted Atty. Stump, I knew I was directed to the right person ... he was gracious, performed the work that needed to be done, and I am so pleased with the outcome. I told Atty. Stump that he is my lawyer from here on in.

When I first spoke with Att. Stump on the phone he told me he would work his butt off for me. He exceeded that. He listened to my goals/wishes and even though they were not conventional, he followed through and delivered on each one. He not only made me feel comfortable but my family as well. While he never promised anything, he was honest about the best case scenario and the worst. He worked for the best case scenario and to my amazement, delivered on that. My wife and I have decided to also entrust him with our will and estate planning. There is no better choice than Att. Michael Stump.

I met Leonard Shober when I needed an elder care attorney. Hiring Leonard turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Initially, he helped me with wills, POA, and some other things I didn’t know I needed; but, of course, I certainly did need them. In addition, I knew that my husband would eventually need full-time care. Leonard guided me to an excellent nursing home, suggesting I sign him up immediately as the nursing home has a 2-year waiting list. Approximately 7 months later, it was obvious my husband needed full-time care. Leonard worked with me to successfully enroll him in the facility. In order to be eligible for Medicaid assistance, a myriad of forms needed to be filled out. My daughter worked with Pat as they ploughed through this material. Pat and Leonard were at our sides, as one after another problems reared their heads. Thankfully, Pat and Leonard solved these seemingly insurmountable issues. It is due to their unfailing work on our behalf that we had a good resolution!! An almost unheard of accomplishment, I don’t think any one else would have worked so diligently, professionally, and compassionately on our behalf. The first day in Leonard’s office led us to a happy ending, and I will always be profoundly grateful to Leonard and Pat for their assistance.

What an Elder Law Lawyer Can Do for You

An elder law lawyer specializes in legal issues that affect older adults, their families, and caregivers. These lawyers handle a broad range of topics, including estate planning, Medicaid and Medicare, long-term care planning, guardianship, elder abuse, and retirement planning. The goal of an elder law lawyer is to protect the rights, finances, and well-being of elderly individuals and to help them plan for future healthcare and financial security.

If you or a loved one is aging and facing challenges related to healthcare, finances, or legal matters, an elder law lawyer can provide essential guidance to protect your rights and interests as you age.

When Should I Hire an Elder Law Lawyer?

Hiring an elder law lawyer can be beneficial in many situations where older adults need help with legal, financial, or healthcare-related decisions. Common reasons to hire an elder law lawyer include:

  • Estate planning: If you want to create or update a will, set up trusts, or ensure that your assets are distributed according to your wishes, an elder law lawyer can help with comprehensive estate planning.
  • Medicaid and Medicare planning: If you need help qualifying for Medicaid to cover long-term care or need advice on navigating Medicare benefits, a lawyer can guide you through the application process and protect your assets.
  • Long-term care planning: If you’re concerned about paying for nursing home care or assisted living, a lawyer can help you create a financial plan and explore options for government assistance.
  • Guardianship or conservatorship: If a family member is unable to make decisions due to age-related cognitive issues, an elder law lawyer can assist in setting up legal guardianship or conservatorship to ensure their care.
  • Elder abuse and exploitation: If you or a loved one is experiencing physical, emotional, or financial abuse, an elder law lawyer can help you take legal action to stop the abuse and recover damages.
  • Retirement planning: Elder law lawyers can assist with planning for retirement, including managing pensions, Social Security, and other retirement income.
  • Special needs planning: If you have a disabled family member who requires special care, an elder law lawyer can help create trusts or other legal arrangements to ensure their long-term financial and healthcare needs are met.

What Does an Elder Law Lawyer Do?

An elder law lawyer provides a wide range of legal services to help older adults and their families navigate the complexities of aging, healthcare, and estate planning. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Drafting wills and trusts: Creating legal documents that outline how an individual’s assets will be distributed after death, ensuring that their wishes are honored.
  • Medicaid and Medicare planning: Helping clients protect their assets while qualifying for government benefits to cover healthcare and long-term care costs.
  • Establishing guardianships: Assisting families in setting up guardianship or conservatorship for loved ones who are unable to make decisions due to mental or physical incapacity.
  • Protecting against elder abuse: Investigating claims of elder abuse or financial exploitation and representing the victim in legal actions to stop the abuse and seek compensation.
  • Planning for long-term care: Developing strategies to cover the costs of nursing homes, assisted living, and other long-term care options without exhausting the elder’s financial resources.
  • Managing probate and estate administration: Guiding families through the probate process to ensure that the decedent’s assets are distributed according to the law and their wishes.
  • Setting up advance directives: Helping clients establish healthcare directives and powers of attorney to ensure their medical and financial decisions are carried out if they become incapacitated.

How Are Elder Law Lawyers Paid?

Elder law lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the type of legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many elder law lawyers charge by the hour, especially for tasks such as drafting documents, handling legal disputes, or providing ongoing legal advice. Hourly rates typically range from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Flat fee: For specific tasks, such as drafting a will or setting up a trust, some lawyers charge a flat fee. This can range from $500 to $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the estate plan.
  • Retainer: For long-term legal representation, such as managing a trust or handling guardianship matters, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers future legal work.
  • Contingency fee: In some elder abuse or financial exploitation cases, a lawyer may work on a contingency fee basis, meaning they only get paid if they recover compensation for the client. This fee is typically a percentage of the settlement or damages awarded.

Be sure to discuss fees with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand how you will be billed and what the total cost of services might be.

How Much Does an Elder Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an elder law lawyer varies depending on the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the fee structure. General cost estimates include:

  • Simple estate planning: Drafting basic documents, such as a will or power of attorney, may cost between $500 and $2,000, depending on the complexity of the client’s assets and wishes.
  • Complex estate planning: Setting up more advanced estate plans, such as revocable or irrevocable trusts, Medicaid planning, or special needs trusts, can range from $2,000 to $10,000 or more.
  • Guardianship or conservatorship: Legal fees for setting up guardianship or conservatorship often range from $2,000 to $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the case and whether disputes arise.
  • Medicaid planning: Legal fees for Medicaid planning can range from $1,500 to $10,000, depending on the level of asset protection needed and the complexity of the individual’s financial situation.

Always ask for an estimate of fees during your initial consultation to ensure you understand how much the legal services will cost.

Top Questions to Ask an Elder Law Lawyer

Before hiring an elder law lawyer, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure they have the experience and expertise needed to handle your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with elder law cases?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's estate planning, Medicaid applications, or elder abuse claims.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or a retainer, and ask for a detailed estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the best approach for my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your situation and what legal strategies the lawyer recommends.
  4. How long will the process take?
Whether it’s drafting an estate plan or setting up a guardianship, ask the lawyer how long they expect the process to take.
  5. Will you handle my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may handle parts of the case. Make sure you know who will be working on your case directly.
  6. What documents should I bring to the consultation?
Ask the lawyer what documentation or information you should prepare for your consultation, such as medical records, financial statements, or prior legal documents.

How to Check the Credibility of an Elder Law Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable elder law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Check their bar status: Verify with your state bar association that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for elder law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in elder law and have experience with cases similar to yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on elder law issues.
  • Check for certifications: Look for certifications or affiliations with organizations such as the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA), which can indicate the lawyer’s dedication to elder law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with an elder law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Existing estate planning documents: If you have a will, trust, or power of attorney in place, bring copies for the lawyer to review.
  • Financial records: Provide details of your assets, including bank accounts, investments, real estate, and retirement accounts, as well as any debts.
  • Medical information: If the case involves guardianship or Medicaid planning, bring relevant medical records that detail the individual's health condition and care needs.
  • Insurance policies: Bring information about health insurance, long-term care insurance, and any other relevant policies.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about your legal needs, the process, and the lawyer’s fees.
  • List of family members or beneficiaries: Prepare a list of the individuals you want to include in your estate plan or who will be affected by the legal process.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your situation more effectively and receive the best legal advice tailored to your needs.
