There is no one else I’d go to other than Warren and his team to help us with our trademarks and essentially any other legal matter. It’s not every day that I get asked for a referral, but when I do, Norred Law is the place I send them. Applying for our trademarks is something we probably could have done, but it is worth every penny to have it done right the first time and get sound, accurate advice throughout the process. It doesn’t hurt that I have known Warren and his family for a few decades now, so the trust level runs deep with them. If you need solid guidance, assistance with patent/trademark work, or legal representation, Norred Law, Warren and his team are the people to see.

First of all, don't pay any attention to the very few negative reviews on this law firm. There are just some people out there who are impossible to satisfy no matter what you do.... Dwain and Jack Downing, and their staff, were wonderful. I hired them to handle probating my father's estate and they walked me through the entire process step-by-step. They were very professional, prompt, thorough, and their fees were very reasonably priced. I will be keeping them on speed dial for any of my future legal needs. Thank you so much for everything!!

I’d go somewhere else I rather pay alittle extra and make sure my things are being take care of the way they should be. Now I got the ticket on my record and had to pay it and them, all because they couldn’t call, send me an email, or a letter anything to let me know what I had to do next.

My husband died while out of state, and he had my children with him. An in law relative had taken possession of my boys and refused to give them back. I had no idea what to do, where to start and how to proceed. Eric immediately took charge and instructed me on what to do. He was able to negotiate the return of my children and settle the matter out of court. If you need an attorney, this is the one you want. Don't settle for anything but the best.

I can not say enough good things about Eric Labovitz and his team. I was getting a divorce, i was seeking spousal support, and i did not know where to start or what to expect. Eric Labovitz immediately made me feel at ease. Eric explained everything to me step by step, and got the ball rolling immediately. In short, Eric was able to accomplish way more for me than what was expected. Through my journey on the road to divorce, I learned that divorces take time, there is more involved than just signing papers, but compared to other reviews about other attorneys, Eric was fast. I learned that divorces can be costly, and again compared to other reviews about other attorneys, I felt the cost was more than fair. Eric is straightforward and takes the time to explain every cost.  Bottom line, if you need an attorney that is straight to the point, that is fair, and that will actually work hard, fight for you and your rights, there is no comparison. Eric Labovitz and his team is who you need!!!

I used James to mediate the sale of my grandfather's house. Everything was going smoothly but 3 days before closing we ran into some major problems. It seemed that when my grandmother passed 12 years ago she did not explicitly leave her portion of the estate to my grandfather. James spent 12 hours on Saturday and Sunday the weekend before we were supposed to close to work everything out, including getting several of my grandmother's children to agree to give their portion of the house they owned by law to my grandfather so he could sell it. He went above and beyond what anyone could expect from a lawyer and a person and he genuinely cared about us as his clients. He was also at the actual closing going over documents from the real estate company before we had to sign them to make sure everything was ship shape. We could not have done the process without James in our corner and he did an amazing job. His price was very reasonable, especially considering all the extra work that he did near the end working well until past midnight on the weekend before we closed. I would definitely recommend Mr. Miller to any of my friends and family. He has earned our trust and loyalty for many years to come.

zero stars. negative if I could. I've been waiting for months to get my paid in full agreement. The lawyer was late on getting me a prenup, then it turned to the postnup and I still dont have the document (over 4months and counting). The balance was paid in full at the beginning. My follow up emails go unanswered. This has been an awful experience and has now made me vulnerable which is exactly what I wanted to prevent. And now I am receiving notices of for payment when I have not been given what I already paid in full for. Absurd. Unprofessional. Scam artist.

I have had several meetings with Donna over the last 7 years. I have always found the staff to be friendly and professional. My emails were adjudicated quickly and phone calls for follow up handled in a very timely manner. Aside from the expert legal advice, I found Donna to have great wisdom from her years of experience and she gave me guidance which helped me in the long run. I am in an excellent position financially (and emotionally) because I followed her advice. I always felt she had my best interest in mind and I am so thankful she was there to help me.

Don’t go here. They like to act like they care about you but then don’t really listen to your problems. They cut you off and go off what they believe and not what you truly want. Don’t believe them on the billing because it will change I’m already in debt as is don’t go here because they will charge for anything without telling you. And your bill they send isn’t the amount they tell you in the end. Save your time and money don’t go here it’s a scam.

I hired Mrs Stevens in June 2013 for a divorce/custody/child support case. It was always difficult to get in touch with her. Her office door was always locked and I never saw staff. She knew I suffered from heart failure and had a disabled son, I confided my fears in divorcing my husband, fears in my son losing his dad, and explained I wanted to keep things as stress free as possible. During initial consultation, I felt as though something wasn't right with this office but I needed help with my divorce. I went to court on my own to get a hearing on legal fees due to my situation and was granted no legal fees charged to me. During Mediation, Mrs Stevens had attitude and seemed to be feeling bad for my soon to be ex husband. I always wondered if she was texting my ex during Mediation because she was always on her phone. After mediation, we began having issues with visitation. This Attorney always ignored my calls. When I received my temporary divorce papers, she actually had a different name in the Change Name field, no where close to my name! When I did finally reach her and ask about this, she said "Oh it's ok this is temporary. The divorce decree will have your correct name". But this temporary order with the wrong name was FILED in court! Not long after, Mrs Stevens claimed she no longer handled Family Law and released me as a client. Imagine my surprise when a few days later I looked up family law attorneys and found her again, still practicing Family Law. This caused extreme stress. I felt as though I wasn't taken seriously, and it caused severe depression. Frantically searching for a Divorce Attorney for a fast approaching court date, I found an amazing law firm. Then I realized, Mrs Stevens didn't take her job seriously and seemed to only want easy cases. I wish I knew back then that I could bring charges against her. I'm glad to see she has been disciplined and I hope the clients she has now don't go through what I went through.

Complete waste of money. I hired her for what I thought was a simple case regarding separation of property/ child support/visitation. Here I am 9 months later paying another lawyer $2500 to do exactly what I hired Ms. Stevens for. On top of that, Ms Stevens showed up late to court.. so we had to find another judge to view my case. Ms Stevens did not do so much as apologize for being late. After the court date I tried contacting Ms Stevens multiple times with questions regarding my case.. she simply told me that she had done what I hired her to do and I could hire her again if necessary.

This lawyer drew up a will and trust several years ago. In October, he was asked to make some very simple updates and amendments to the will and trust: to provide current addresses and in the will to change a beneficiary. We hoped to have this completed before moving to another town. He was asked to update the financial power of attorney and the medical power of attorney. For this he charged nearly $1000. He cashed the check the very next day. The forms were supposed to be mailed to us, we would have them witnessed and notarized, copied, and send them back. That was two months ago. I sent a registered letter demanding the changes and a return of the original will. The USPS says that they tried to deliver it on a Monday, left a notice for the letter to be picked up. That was three weeks ago. There was one phone call from a clerk saying that she needed the names of the people who would witness the signature to type them into the document. I explained that the names of the witnesses, who will be strangers at the UPS office, would be printed in when they witnessed the signature and it was notarized. I asked about the registered letter. The clerk said she did not know anything about it. I do regret raising my voice to the clerk; that was wrong of me. More time has passed and Mr. Kolton still has not returned the will, has not sent the amendments, has not refunded our money, let alone an apology. I do not know what is going on with Mr. Kolton since he has not sent me any communication at all. I do know that in two months time he has failed to deliver very simple amendments or to refund our money. If he ever does provide the services for which he has already cashed the check, I would be happy to post again. I would remind anyone of ordinary means wanting to write a will in Texas, that our Congress has made it very easy. In Texas, one can simply write out a will or go to an office supply store and buy a "fill in the blank" or a CD that will guide one through. Cost: Less than $30.

What an Estate Planning Lawyer Can Do for You

An estate planning lawyer helps individuals plan for the management and distribution of their assets after death or during incapacitation. Their services involve drafting important legal documents, such as wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives. Estate planning attorneys work to ensure that your assets are transferred according to your wishes, minimize tax liabilities, and avoid probate court. They also help clients plan for potential long-term care needs and protect their estate from being diminished by healthcare costs.

By working with an estate planning lawyer, you can have peace of mind knowing that your loved ones will be cared for and that your estate will be managed efficiently and according to your desires.

When Should I Hire an Estate Planning Lawyer?

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is beneficial in many situations, especially when you want to ensure that your assets are handled properly after death. Common reasons to hire an estate planning lawyer include:

  • Drafting a will: If you want to clearly define how your assets will be distributed after death, an attorney can draft a legally sound will.
  • Creating a trust: For those looking to avoid probate or provide for loved ones over time, setting up a trust can help manage the distribution of assets.
  • Planning for incapacity: An estate lawyer can help draft powers of attorney and healthcare directives so that your financial and medical decisions are made by someone you trust if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimizing estate taxes: If your estate is large, a lawyer can help create strategies to reduce or eliminate federal and state estate taxes.
  • Special circumstances: If you have minor children, blended families, or complex assets like businesses, an estate planning lawyer can create tailored solutions.
  • Guardianship or conservatorship: If you want to designate guardians for minor children or ensure proper care for incapacitated adults, an attorney can help.

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is especially important if your estate is complex or if you want to ensure that your wishes are properly followed.

What Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Do?

An estate planning lawyer provides a range of services designed to help you organize your affairs and ensure your estate is managed according to your wishes. They can:

  • Draft wills and trusts: Creating legally binding documents that dictate how your assets will be distributed and managed.
  • Create powers of attorney and healthcare directives: Appointing someone to make financial or medical decisions for you if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimize taxes: Developing strategies to reduce estate taxes, gift taxes, and other financial liabilities for your heirs.
  • Help avoid probate: Structuring your estate plan to avoid probate, which can save time and money for your beneficiaries.
  • Advise on long-term care planning: Helping you plan for potential healthcare needs in the future, including Medicaid planning and protecting assets from being depleted by nursing home costs.
  • Assist with beneficiary designations: Ensuring that life insurance policies, retirement accounts, and other financial instruments are correctly designated.
  • Handle probate and estate administration: If a loved one has passed away, an estate planning lawyer can help guide you through the probate process or act as an executor.

How Are Estate Planning Lawyers Paid?

Estate planning lawyers typically charge for their services in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of your estate and the type of services you need. Common payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: Many estate planning services, such as drafting a will or trust, are charged on a flat-fee basis. The fee covers all work related to preparing the document.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex planning, such as estate tax strategy or trust administration, lawyers may charge by the hour. Rates vary based on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Retainer: Some lawyers require a retainer for more complex cases, such as ongoing trust management or estate administration. The retainer is an upfront payment that covers future legal services.

It’s important to discuss fees with your lawyer upfront to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an estate planning lawyer depends on the complexity of your estate and the services you require. Here are some general guidelines:

  • Simple wills or powers of attorney: A straightforward will or power of attorney may cost between $300 and $1,500, depending on your location and the lawyer’s experience.
  • Trust creation: Establishing a trust, such as a living trust or revocable trust, can cost between $1,000 and $3,000 or more, depending on the complexity of your assets and estate planning needs.
  • Comprehensive estate planning packages: Some lawyers offer packages that include wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives, which may range from $2,000 to $5,000 or more, depending on the estate’s complexity.
  • Hourly rates: For ongoing services like estate administration or tax planning, lawyers may charge hourly rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience.

Always get a clear estimate of costs during your initial consultation to ensure the services fit within your budget.

Top Questions to Ask an Estate Planning Lawyer

Before hiring an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to ask questions to ensure they are the right fit for your needs. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What is your experience with estate planning?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience drafting wills, creating trusts, and handling other estate planning services.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a flat fee or by the hour and ask for a detailed estimate of costs.
  3. What strategies do you recommend for my estate?
A good lawyer should be able to explain the best strategies for minimizing taxes, avoiding probate, and ensuring your assets are distributed according to your wishes.
  4. How often should I update my estate plan?
Ask how frequently you should revisit your estate plan, especially if your financial situation or family dynamics change.
  5. Do you offer ongoing support or updates?
Some lawyers provide periodic reviews or updates to ensure your estate plan stays current with changes in your circumstances or the law.
  6. How will you help my beneficiaries if something happens to me?
Ensure the lawyer is willing to guide your heirs through the estate administration process or help manage your trust after you’re gone.

How to Check the Credibility of an Estate Planning Lawyer

To ensure you’re hiring a credible estate planning lawyer, follow these steps:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for estate planning certifications: Some lawyers are certified as estate planning specialists, which indicates they have extensive knowledge in this area of law.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Online reviews on sites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell can provide insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from previous clients who can speak to their expertise and client service.
  • Check for membership in professional organizations: Lawyers who are members of organizations like the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) or the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC) often have a strong reputation in the field.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first meeting with an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • List of assets and liabilities: Provide a detailed inventory of your assets, including real estate, bank accounts, retirement funds, investments, and personal property, as well as any debts you may have.
  • List of beneficiaries: Be ready to discuss who you want to receive your assets and in what proportions. This includes naming guardians for minor children if applicable.
  • Existing estate documents: Bring copies of any existing wills, trusts, powers of attorney, or other relevant estate planning documents.
  • Questions about your estate goals: Write down your goals, such as avoiding probate, reducing taxes, or setting up charitable donations, so your lawyer can tailor a plan to meet your needs.
  • Information on medical and financial decision-makers: Be prepared to discuss who you want to appoint for healthcare and financial decisions if you become incapacitated.

By being well-prepared, you can ensure a productive consultation and begin building a comprehensive estate plan that meets your needs and protects your loved ones.
