I could not sing enough praises about Jeff Coleman of Coleman Law Firm in Clearwater, FL. I received an exceptionally high level of professional care throughout the process of dealing with the handling of my Dad's estate in FL while I reside in NY. With Jeff at the helm with his ever present intelligence and expertise, I forged through an extraordinarily difficult 2+ years sprinkled with more than its fair share of "never before seen moments". Jeff calmly and smoothly navigated the turbulent waters of dealing with incredibly difficult people and situations, never ceasing to be compassionate, kind, patient, fair, honest and thorough. I must also give kudos to Jeff's paralegal and "right-hand person" Emily, who shares the same qualities of excellence. Emily adds and additional dose of empathy and is thoroughly professional, kind, and caring with superb listening skills. Together they make a great team and will forever be my "legal hero's" for successfully getting me through the most challenging experience of my life!

Mr. Coleman is obviously very knowledgeable in his field, but he is also very approachable, and easy to talk to. He takes the time to explain things fully in a way that is easy to understand. He kept me very well informed of the progress of my case, and then made a superb presentation at my final hearing. I cannot recommend his services highly enough.

Unfortunately, I had a bad experience. The initial consultation with Mrs. McDonald went well enough. But her assistant/husband was awful. His correspondence was slow and he was condescending. The final straw was when he told me to "get creative" when I asked for help figuring out a way to get tax transcripts from an ex. I found another lawyer which made me realize how bad this experience was. If you're on the fence wondering, I'd look elsewhere.

We closed the sale with Amy Hill and it was a pleasant experience. I spent a good part of my 40 years of law practice handling real estate transactions so I know the effort that's required to make a closing go smoothly. All the real work of brining it together is invisible to the client. When Amy sat down at the table she had all the papers ready to go and, with a pleasant demeanor, guided us quickly and efficiently. The mark of a professional is making it look easy. Ours was an easy closing because it was run by a professional

I had a problem with my HOA and found that Florida government agencies could not help A friend recommended McFarland Gould so I called. They quickly directed me to a paralegal. Sam Pagan who works with attorney Phillip Dragonetti, who is expert in HOA and condominium disputes. Sam was very patient with me and spent a lot of time listening and gathering relevant documents. After Mr. Dragonetti reviewed my information, they arranged a conference call to discuss my case. He was very thorough and patient with me to discuss the pros and cons of my case. Although we decided that going forward with legal action would be premature , at this point, I was educated about my options and given guidance on next steps. I would highly recommend Mr Dragonetti to anyone who has issues with their HOA or condominium association.

Mr. Parry was able to resolve an issue that multiple attorneys said was impossible, some attorneys even took money claiming to be able to help and then after months of waiting were unable to do anything. Attorney Parry and his staff took on this task and persevered through many obstacles to achieve the desired result. They were continuously patient and professional. I could not be happier with what they achieved and am completely grateful for the knowledge and skill they brought to the situation in order to get in finally resolved. If an attorney tells you, it cannot be done do not believe them until you consult Mr. Parry, better yet just call them they can and will help.

I would not recommend this attorney due to many problems I had with him. If you want a pit bull, he might be your guy. But not all legal issues require a pit bull, or pit bully. He distorted my claim to make it more inflamatory. He claimed he would "make a big statement" but that we would just settle for much less. He turned a minor legal dispute in to a major issue that ran up my legal bill. The problem is he accused my former partner of fraud and forgery, which was not my claim. I was shocked when I saw what he had accused my former client of. His work was also sloppy. He missed my name in his letters to opposing counsel, and appeared to be confusing my case with another. It was pretty disturbing. I had instructed him to settle the case to what a viewed as a reasonable offer, then found out he had already rejected it. I eventually settled for what amounted to less just to stop my dealings with him.

When you think of Donna K. Rose, you can think and know Donna has a strong and long history of harassing a qualified disabled person, in league with her attorney buddies. The student at St. Pete College, where Donna hides out and refuses to represent public clients b/c she is too scared, requested that Donna allow him to bring in a friend to a classroom of a non-law class Donna was newly teaching. The student came into class with no assistance for his disabilities because Donna denied him that reasonable right to follow discussions in class, then a student bothered the disabled male, to which Donna later started working with SPC attorneys to follow the disabled person around Pinellas county and get him into legal trouble, more harassment, and definite conflict of interest, fraudulent cases involving other SPC faculty and staff Donna hides behind because she is just too damn scared to file her own party cases. If you know what's good and earnest, you'd do best to keep far away from Donna K. Rose, who is a meek, slimey, greedy, and worthless attorney.

I had to get a separation agreement, and had Attorney Rose do it for me. I knew very little about how I should protect myself for later. She listened to my story and figured out the agreement. This was about 4 years ago. I have to say that at the time I did not realized the great work she had done, but as time went by every time I had a concern or my ex came up with a new "trick" I looked at the agreement and she had covered the subject. I cannot say enough about her honesty and truly caring and professional treatment she delivered to me.

I would never ever recommend Aubrey to represent me or anyone else. She is a gold digger, she does not return calls, she is not there to help you just take your money. It takes her weeks to return emails and she recommends people to get court appointed guardians when not needed as well as not explaining what all that entails. Wanted to fire her but, it was too late in the process to get another attorney. When looking into getting another attorney sharing with them how I was being represented they shared to beware that the advice I was getting was wrongful and unjust. STAY AWAY LOOK ELSEWHERE WHEN LOOKING FOR AN ELDER LAW ATTORNEY SHE IS NOT THE ONE. She caused more stress and pain for me and the family then needed. I called for guidance and help and she convinced me that she could do it all. She did not do anything but, again take my money nothing was resolved and still isn't. She will have to live with her own actions and guilt. Beware! She is not the person you want to help your elderly parent or for that matter anything.

Two years ago, I had a real estate issue and visited the firm seeking guidance. Attorney Martha Bolton was gracious as she met with me, listening attentively to understand my situation. Even though she explained that my matter was outside the firm's scope of practice, she provided me with resources leaving me in a far better position than when I showed up just an hour earlier. That matter has progressed and now encompasses a larger legal scope. Today, I called the office asking to speak with Attorney Bolton. Adam answered the phone (Attorney Adam Rauman, I would later learn from the firm's website), and it was evident from the onset that he was bothered to have to be doing so. What followed felt more like an interrogation than a conversation, with him interrupting me at least three times in less than as many minutes to 'correct' me. Adam's attitude, tone, disposition, and overall professional demeanor were absolutely appalling during our conversation - so much so that I'm compelled to warn others, and provide him a stark reminder that he works in a service-based industry. Having specific legal knowledge doesn't elevate him above others; it simply means he's well-versed in a particular subject, just as we all possess expertise in our own areas. If client interactions pose such a challenge for Adam, perhaps the firm would be better served by keeping him focused on legal work behind the scenes. A skilled attorney doesn't always translate to a skilled communicator. Prioritizing his strengths while shielding clients from his shortcomings could benefit everyone involved. In such an esteemed field as the legal profession where compassion and respect are paramount, Attorney Adam Rauman's conduct was not only unprofessional but utterly disgraceful, and stands in stark contrast to my prior positive experience with Attorney Martha Bolton.

What an Estate Planning Lawyer Can Do for You

An estate planning lawyer helps individuals plan for the management and distribution of their assets after death or during incapacitation. Their services involve drafting important legal documents, such as wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives. Estate planning attorneys work to ensure that your assets are transferred according to your wishes, minimize tax liabilities, and avoid probate court. They also help clients plan for potential long-term care needs and protect their estate from being diminished by healthcare costs.

By working with an estate planning lawyer, you can have peace of mind knowing that your loved ones will be cared for and that your estate will be managed efficiently and according to your desires.

When Should I Hire an Estate Planning Lawyer?

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is beneficial in many situations, especially when you want to ensure that your assets are handled properly after death. Common reasons to hire an estate planning lawyer include:

  • Drafting a will: If you want to clearly define how your assets will be distributed after death, an attorney can draft a legally sound will.
  • Creating a trust: For those looking to avoid probate or provide for loved ones over time, setting up a trust can help manage the distribution of assets.
  • Planning for incapacity: An estate lawyer can help draft powers of attorney and healthcare directives so that your financial and medical decisions are made by someone you trust if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimizing estate taxes: If your estate is large, a lawyer can help create strategies to reduce or eliminate federal and state estate taxes.
  • Special circumstances: If you have minor children, blended families, or complex assets like businesses, an estate planning lawyer can create tailored solutions.
  • Guardianship or conservatorship: If you want to designate guardians for minor children or ensure proper care for incapacitated adults, an attorney can help.

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is especially important if your estate is complex or if you want to ensure that your wishes are properly followed.

What Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Do?

An estate planning lawyer provides a range of services designed to help you organize your affairs and ensure your estate is managed according to your wishes. They can:

  • Draft wills and trusts: Creating legally binding documents that dictate how your assets will be distributed and managed.
  • Create powers of attorney and healthcare directives: Appointing someone to make financial or medical decisions for you if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimize taxes: Developing strategies to reduce estate taxes, gift taxes, and other financial liabilities for your heirs.
  • Help avoid probate: Structuring your estate plan to avoid probate, which can save time and money for your beneficiaries.
  • Advise on long-term care planning: Helping you plan for potential healthcare needs in the future, including Medicaid planning and protecting assets from being depleted by nursing home costs.
  • Assist with beneficiary designations: Ensuring that life insurance policies, retirement accounts, and other financial instruments are correctly designated.
  • Handle probate and estate administration: If a loved one has passed away, an estate planning lawyer can help guide you through the probate process or act as an executor.

How Are Estate Planning Lawyers Paid?

Estate planning lawyers typically charge for their services in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of your estate and the type of services you need. Common payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: Many estate planning services, such as drafting a will or trust, are charged on a flat-fee basis. The fee covers all work related to preparing the document.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex planning, such as estate tax strategy or trust administration, lawyers may charge by the hour. Rates vary based on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Retainer: Some lawyers require a retainer for more complex cases, such as ongoing trust management or estate administration. The retainer is an upfront payment that covers future legal services.

It’s important to discuss fees with your lawyer upfront to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an estate planning lawyer depends on the complexity of your estate and the services you require. Here are some general guidelines:

  • Simple wills or powers of attorney: A straightforward will or power of attorney may cost between $300 and $1,500, depending on your location and the lawyer’s experience.
  • Trust creation: Establishing a trust, such as a living trust or revocable trust, can cost between $1,000 and $3,000 or more, depending on the complexity of your assets and estate planning needs.
  • Comprehensive estate planning packages: Some lawyers offer packages that include wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives, which may range from $2,000 to $5,000 or more, depending on the estate’s complexity.
  • Hourly rates: For ongoing services like estate administration or tax planning, lawyers may charge hourly rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience.

Always get a clear estimate of costs during your initial consultation to ensure the services fit within your budget.

Top Questions to Ask an Estate Planning Lawyer

Before hiring an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to ask questions to ensure they are the right fit for your needs. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What is your experience with estate planning?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience drafting wills, creating trusts, and handling other estate planning services.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a flat fee or by the hour and ask for a detailed estimate of costs.
  3. What strategies do you recommend for my estate?
A good lawyer should be able to explain the best strategies for minimizing taxes, avoiding probate, and ensuring your assets are distributed according to your wishes.
  4. How often should I update my estate plan?
Ask how frequently you should revisit your estate plan, especially if your financial situation or family dynamics change.
  5. Do you offer ongoing support or updates?
Some lawyers provide periodic reviews or updates to ensure your estate plan stays current with changes in your circumstances or the law.
  6. How will you help my beneficiaries if something happens to me?
Ensure the lawyer is willing to guide your heirs through the estate administration process or help manage your trust after you’re gone.

How to Check the Credibility of an Estate Planning Lawyer

To ensure you’re hiring a credible estate planning lawyer, follow these steps:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for estate planning certifications: Some lawyers are certified as estate planning specialists, which indicates they have extensive knowledge in this area of law.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Online reviews on sites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell can provide insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from previous clients who can speak to their expertise and client service.
  • Check for membership in professional organizations: Lawyers who are members of organizations like the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) or the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC) often have a strong reputation in the field.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first meeting with an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • List of assets and liabilities: Provide a detailed inventory of your assets, including real estate, bank accounts, retirement funds, investments, and personal property, as well as any debts you may have.
  • List of beneficiaries: Be ready to discuss who you want to receive your assets and in what proportions. This includes naming guardians for minor children if applicable.
  • Existing estate documents: Bring copies of any existing wills, trusts, powers of attorney, or other relevant estate planning documents.
  • Questions about your estate goals: Write down your goals, such as avoiding probate, reducing taxes, or setting up charitable donations, so your lawyer can tailor a plan to meet your needs.
  • Information on medical and financial decision-makers: Be prepared to discuss who you want to appoint for healthcare and financial decisions if you become incapacitated.

By being well-prepared, you can ensure a productive consultation and begin building a comprehensive estate plan that meets your needs and protects your loved ones.
