Attorney Grochowski has handled multiple business issues for me over the past four years pertaining to employment law, customer, and vendor problems. She has always been professional, honest, and easily accessable. Her recommendations have assisted in the resolution of many problems and avoided court in every instance. In an employment discrimination complaint she kept us out of court, minimized the cost of settlement with a six month payout. For a non paying customer her persistance and pressure resulted in eventual payment. Her negotiations in two vendor related issues resulted in a favorable out comes. I would recommend her to anyone facing similar legal issues.

Equal parts intelligence and grit, Carmine Perri is the attorney to rely on should you find yourself tangled in a probate dispute.  Having been referred to me by a seasoned litigator, I met with and hired Carmine re:  the exploitation of my uncle's estate by a malevolent third party.  My issue stretched from CT to a foreign jurisdiction; however, Carmine distilled the circumstances into a clear strategy, setting me on the path to a positive outcome that would have almost certainly been unattainable if not for his help.

We recently hired Carmine for a contentious probate case that had been dragging on for 4 years. He was very efficient, thorough and informative. Just his presence made a difference. All of a sudden arbitration was suggested. I believe that was to avoid Superior Court. The case was settled in about 2 hours. I would have liked to see Att. Perri examine our opposition in court but the arbitration worked out. I believe that he would have enjoyed working court and would have done an outstanding job./. Without reservation I recommend Att. Perri. He was outstanding.

"I am an experienced paramedic, with awards and decorations, with over 20 years of experience. Recently I was terminated from my empowerment through no fault of my own. I had applied for unemployment compensation and was denied. I reached out to Attorney Lasko . After a through and extensive consultation with Attorney Lasko, where he was able to analyze my termination and give me a firm understanding of what my legal rights were as to wrongful termination and unemployment benefits, I retained Attorney Lasko. Attorney Lasko was able to put together an highly effective letter that was sent to my former employer which resulted in my re-employment and the winning of unemployment benefits in the appeal process that covering unemployment benefits for the time I was out of work.. Although it is Attorney Lasko’s policy not to guarantee results, the results he obtained for me through keen insight, quick action, and years of tempered experience as he negotiated with my former employer were beyond any expectation I may have had. Results speak and Attorney Lasko delivered! I recommend Attorney Lasko without reservation! Eric Fortmann, EMTP

Attorney Lasko was one of three attorneys referred to me by Outten & Golden. I hired Attorney Lasko, because he was prompt and proactive. He helped devise an exit strategy from my former employer, then navigate through the separation, which was done so amicably. Moreover, I was able to successfully secure the maximum severance package allowable from my former employer on the terms that I desired. Overall, it was a positive experience, and I have able to remain on good terms with my former employer. This was a win-win situation. I highly recommend Attorney Lasko.

First-time homebuyer. Our realtor recommended Clare Bolduc as our real estate attorney. I couldn't have been happier with that recommendation. Right from the start she was open to all my questions and concerns. Being very new at this I needed someone to walk me through the entire process, and Clare did just that. She went over every point with me and responded very timely to any questions I had. We spent significant time on the phone going over every last detail. Upon hiring her, Clare gave me a flat quote for her services, which, at the time, I thought was very fair. I personally think she undercharged. With the amount of footwork she had to do and how she continues to go to bat for me with the sellers even after we closed I feel I got great value in hiring her. She's really good. At her previous law firm it only took her 3 years to make partner. That's VERY quick. She definitely knows the ins and outs of her profession and I would be very happy to hire her again if the need arises. She even made a point to provide some distractions for my 2-year-old son during the closing so my wife and I could sign the documents. 5 gold stars from me. Very satisfied. Highly recommend for ANYONE doing ANYTHING that needs an attorney in CT or NY. Thank you, Clare.

As first time home buyers, my husband and i had A LOT of questions! The ones our realtor couldn't help answers we asked to Clare and not only did she always know the answer but she responded to us very quickly. We hardly ever waited more than an hour to hear back from her which always put us at ease during the stressful moments. As you're looking for a Attorney for real estate transactions, we highly, highly would recommend working with Clare! We would do it all over again if we had to!

I researched Tax Lawyers on Avvo and found Eric’s information. I emailed Eric and asked him if his initial consultation was free. Despite the fact that he was out of the office, he responded to my email and then called me to answer a Tax Liability, negotiation point, question with regards to my divorce. He did this at no charge! He’s a saint…No one does that in this day and age! I wish there were more lawyers with his good heart and not always out to make a buck but instead helping out his fellow man, or in this case woman!  Thank you Eric!

Jay Weintraub represented me in a law suit in which I was the plaintiff suing my former business partner. Besides the fact that we won on all accounts, I was very impressed with the way he listened, counseled, analyzed and informed me all along the way. Since then Jay has represented me and my adult children in matters relating to real estate, estate planning, etc. I trust him for his knowledge, clarity of explanation, tenacity, and demeanor. Jay is not an attack oriented lawyer. He tries reason, communication and win-win results but he can be steel-minded when necessary. I always felt that my benefit was his primary objective- not his best interests.

I met Nicole at a networking event. I had been procrastinating putting my estate plan together for several years, not only because it's simply not a pleasant thing to talk about but also because I just never found someone I was comfortable talking to about...let's face it; death. Nicole, was immediately warm, friendly and most of all reassuring. She walked me through every aspect of the process and made the planning painless and easy. I am now comfortable knowing that in the event that should anything happen to me, my family will clearly know my intentions on how everything is to be handled right down to my funeral services. Nicole is truly a professional and I would not hesitate to use her services again should they be need.

Although the people on our team were amazing and worked diligently to make sure things on our end were covered, the other parties involved did not have the same support. Kate communicated consistently, addressed our concerns and made sure our paperwork was done and our needs were met. My husband and I are in our lated 60s. It was important to us to put an estate plan in place and avoid probate. Jim Young was highly recommended by our financial advisor. Our initial consultation with Jim was very informative and we felt comfortable hiring him as our estate planning lawyer. We met Jim several times, had many discussions, and Jim presented us with several options to met our specific needs. Because this was a second marriage for my husband and I and we each had children and grandchildren from a previous marriage, our circumstances presented a more complex plan. Jim navigated us through this conversation and process with patience and thoughtfulness.

We were delighted to find this lawyer after working for years with a person who didn't do much but charged too much. Andrea responds to email and phone calls within 24 hours, and she always has the correct answer to complex questions. As anyone knows, laws change from time to time as do laws from state to state. Tom Robinson took the time to understand a trust I had completed for my Dad years ago (by an out of state attorney) reviewed it thoroughly to understand it and proposed what needed to change to make it compliant with the needs we presently have with regards to my parents current situation. Being a great attorney is a matter of law, caring about the situation and the client is where Tom goes above and beyond earning not only my appreciation but also my respect.

What an Estate Planning Lawyer Can Do for You

An estate planning lawyer helps individuals plan for the management and distribution of their assets after death or during incapacitation. Their services involve drafting important legal documents, such as wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives. Estate planning attorneys work to ensure that your assets are transferred according to your wishes, minimize tax liabilities, and avoid probate court. They also help clients plan for potential long-term care needs and protect their estate from being diminished by healthcare costs.

By working with an estate planning lawyer, you can have peace of mind knowing that your loved ones will be cared for and that your estate will be managed efficiently and according to your desires.

When Should I Hire an Estate Planning Lawyer?

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is beneficial in many situations, especially when you want to ensure that your assets are handled properly after death. Common reasons to hire an estate planning lawyer include:

  • Drafting a will: If you want to clearly define how your assets will be distributed after death, an attorney can draft a legally sound will.
  • Creating a trust: For those looking to avoid probate or provide for loved ones over time, setting up a trust can help manage the distribution of assets.
  • Planning for incapacity: An estate lawyer can help draft powers of attorney and healthcare directives so that your financial and medical decisions are made by someone you trust if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimizing estate taxes: If your estate is large, a lawyer can help create strategies to reduce or eliminate federal and state estate taxes.
  • Special circumstances: If you have minor children, blended families, or complex assets like businesses, an estate planning lawyer can create tailored solutions.
  • Guardianship or conservatorship: If you want to designate guardians for minor children or ensure proper care for incapacitated adults, an attorney can help.

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is especially important if your estate is complex or if you want to ensure that your wishes are properly followed.

What Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Do?

An estate planning lawyer provides a range of services designed to help you organize your affairs and ensure your estate is managed according to your wishes. They can:

  • Draft wills and trusts: Creating legally binding documents that dictate how your assets will be distributed and managed.
  • Create powers of attorney and healthcare directives: Appointing someone to make financial or medical decisions for you if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimize taxes: Developing strategies to reduce estate taxes, gift taxes, and other financial liabilities for your heirs.
  • Help avoid probate: Structuring your estate plan to avoid probate, which can save time and money for your beneficiaries.
  • Advise on long-term care planning: Helping you plan for potential healthcare needs in the future, including Medicaid planning and protecting assets from being depleted by nursing home costs.
  • Assist with beneficiary designations: Ensuring that life insurance policies, retirement accounts, and other financial instruments are correctly designated.
  • Handle probate and estate administration: If a loved one has passed away, an estate planning lawyer can help guide you through the probate process or act as an executor.

How Are Estate Planning Lawyers Paid?

Estate planning lawyers typically charge for their services in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of your estate and the type of services you need. Common payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: Many estate planning services, such as drafting a will or trust, are charged on a flat-fee basis. The fee covers all work related to preparing the document.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex planning, such as estate tax strategy or trust administration, lawyers may charge by the hour. Rates vary based on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Retainer: Some lawyers require a retainer for more complex cases, such as ongoing trust management or estate administration. The retainer is an upfront payment that covers future legal services.

It’s important to discuss fees with your lawyer upfront to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an estate planning lawyer depends on the complexity of your estate and the services you require. Here are some general guidelines:

  • Simple wills or powers of attorney: A straightforward will or power of attorney may cost between $300 and $1,500, depending on your location and the lawyer’s experience.
  • Trust creation: Establishing a trust, such as a living trust or revocable trust, can cost between $1,000 and $3,000 or more, depending on the complexity of your assets and estate planning needs.
  • Comprehensive estate planning packages: Some lawyers offer packages that include wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives, which may range from $2,000 to $5,000 or more, depending on the estate’s complexity.
  • Hourly rates: For ongoing services like estate administration or tax planning, lawyers may charge hourly rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience.

Always get a clear estimate of costs during your initial consultation to ensure the services fit within your budget.

Top Questions to Ask an Estate Planning Lawyer

Before hiring an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to ask questions to ensure they are the right fit for your needs. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What is your experience with estate planning?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience drafting wills, creating trusts, and handling other estate planning services.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a flat fee or by the hour and ask for a detailed estimate of costs.
  3. What strategies do you recommend for my estate?
A good lawyer should be able to explain the best strategies for minimizing taxes, avoiding probate, and ensuring your assets are distributed according to your wishes.
  4. How often should I update my estate plan?
Ask how frequently you should revisit your estate plan, especially if your financial situation or family dynamics change.
  5. Do you offer ongoing support or updates?
Some lawyers provide periodic reviews or updates to ensure your estate plan stays current with changes in your circumstances or the law.
  6. How will you help my beneficiaries if something happens to me?
Ensure the lawyer is willing to guide your heirs through the estate administration process or help manage your trust after you’re gone.

How to Check the Credibility of an Estate Planning Lawyer

To ensure you’re hiring a credible estate planning lawyer, follow these steps:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for estate planning certifications: Some lawyers are certified as estate planning specialists, which indicates they have extensive knowledge in this area of law.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Online reviews on sites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell can provide insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from previous clients who can speak to their expertise and client service.
  • Check for membership in professional organizations: Lawyers who are members of organizations like the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) or the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC) often have a strong reputation in the field.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first meeting with an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • List of assets and liabilities: Provide a detailed inventory of your assets, including real estate, bank accounts, retirement funds, investments, and personal property, as well as any debts you may have.
  • List of beneficiaries: Be ready to discuss who you want to receive your assets and in what proportions. This includes naming guardians for minor children if applicable.
  • Existing estate documents: Bring copies of any existing wills, trusts, powers of attorney, or other relevant estate planning documents.
  • Questions about your estate goals: Write down your goals, such as avoiding probate, reducing taxes, or setting up charitable donations, so your lawyer can tailor a plan to meet your needs.
  • Information on medical and financial decision-makers: Be prepared to discuss who you want to appoint for healthcare and financial decisions if you become incapacitated.

By being well-prepared, you can ensure a productive consultation and begin building a comprehensive estate plan that meets your needs and protects your loved ones.
