To start, let me say shame on me for not doing enough research to protect my family from getting taken advantage of. I thought that researching lawyers in the area, checking online reviews and following up with a call to speak with someone at this firm about my estate planning needs would have sufficed, but after the experience I had, I’ve learned that I need to educate myself (and others) much more about what to expect. I called their office to learn more about the firm's estate planning process, fees, etc. I spoke with William. He was very nice and informative (so I thought). He told me to set up an initial consultation for which there would be a charge ($150 for up to 30 minutes, $250 for 60 minutes). When I asked what the fees were for the creation of a will, POA, etc., he didn’t know specifically. I asked if the consultation fee would be rolled up into the cost of the estate planning. He didn’t know, but asked Tiffany. He came back and said yes, that’s often the case. My wife and I adjusted our work schedules and picked up our 10 month old daughter early from daycare to come to the consultation. It lasted no more than 20 minutes. Frankly, everything that was shared was stuff we could have read about online for free. During this chat, we learned that the firm charges a flat fee of $1,000/person for the will and two power of attorney documents. And that the $150 consultation fee doesn’t apply to flat fee scenarios. For us personally, the consultation didn’t add value for the price we paid. We didn’t have to have it in person. They could have easily shared those basics via the firm's website or we could have read about them elsewhere online. That would have saved us $150. All possible if the person that answers the phone is equipped to answer questions from potential clients about what they’re actually going to get out of the in-person consultation. In posting this review, my hope is that you're able to better educate yourself on the topic/process so that you can better spend your hard earned dollars.

Mr. Ellis represented me in a very unusual and tense custody case. From the moment I walked into his office, I was treated with respect and consideration from the entire staff. There was not a single moment during the process of preparing for court or in court that I was not confident in our strategy or Mr. Ellis' capability to represent my interests. Mr. Ellis was also a consummate professional even in response those who were not. It was very apparent that he was well respected by both the judge and other attorneys. And the outcome was exactly what I'd hoped for. Considering Mr. Ellis is one of the best attorneys for custody and divorce matters in North Carolina, his fees are incredibly reasonable. The way his office handles and bills cases is precise, conscientious and designed to benefit the client. The only thing I wish I'd done differently is be a better listener. Do everything Gray tells you to do!

In 2012 I hired Gray Ellis as my family lawyer in a child custody case. He was able to get me more time that I had originally agreed too. Throughout the case, Gray kept in contact with me. If I called and Gray wasn't able to answer me at that moment, contact was made within 2 hours during regular business hours. If it was after business hours, I was contacted within 3 to 4 hours. While all this is great, the thing that impressed upon me most was that Gray was more about giving me the best outcome for my money rather than the most money for the best outcome.

First, I don't usually write reviews. This is actually only the 3rd review I've ever written; however, I was so impressed with Attorney Hatcher and her team I was compelled to write this review. Attorney Hatcher took on my case after I was turned away by 2 other attorneys. Attorney Hatcher was able to get a settlement of my case very close to what I was originally asking for. I am so grateful to the Hatcher Legal team. The professionalism of Hatcher Legal is second to none and if I ever need future legal representation I will definitely turn to Hatcher Legal.

As a client of hers over a 3 year period of representation , I only met with her only a few times.... It consistsed of constant , never-ending requests for $5,000 / $10,000 Dollar retainers that were vacuumed up almost as soon as I could pay them. Eventually leading to her to requesting that I just pay $5,000 a month to keep my retainer supplied... After over $100,000.00 dollars of billing, my case never even saw its day in court....It was dismissed on technicality ..... Absolutely nothing was achieved... I refused to pay the last bill that was sent to me for a 35 min oral hearing to combat the dismissal of my case , inwhich I was billed $16,000.00 dollars for ... she refused to discuss the bill with me and come to a fair agreement, and then she promptly sued me for it, adding Monthly compound interest, exponentially increasing the bill to upwards of $30,000.... I regret the day I ever walked into her law office..

Attorney Hatcher and her staff are like David and Goliath; soft spoken, friendly, and very professional but mighty, strong, valor and wise when taking on great challenges. Moreover, coming out with the Win. Attorney Hatcher took my case to see if she could resolve it on the first level without me having to go to a deeper legal battle. With her smart and hard work coupled with her expertise, she was able to resolve my issue and get the information that I needed to move forward. I will always take my legal matters to her first and will refer my family and friends to her as well. I feel like she and her staff are a part of my family as I can talk to them as I would my own family. It has been a pleasure working with her and her staff.

We hired Ann to help us with an issue we were having with our daughter's IEP. Our district was not providing us services, and Ann and her office helped us file the complaint to our district. After that, she went through all the different approaches we could take to deal with our district detailing, the advantages, risks, and cost associated with each. When we had our resolution meeting with the district, we elected not to have her in the meeting since it meant the district could not bring a lawyer either. However, Ann detailed exactly how the meeting would go and helped us organize all our paperwork and information for the meeting. During the meeting, we felt confident and prepared, in fact, we felt more prepared than the district. The outcome of the meeting was that the district gave us everything we asked for including costs accrued. This was a slow and stressful process, so it was very helpful to have Ann and her team walking us through each step of the way. She was very knowledgeable on the aspects of the law that surrounded our complaint and that helped us greatly to advocate confidently for ourselves. I would highly recommend Ann if you have any issues surrounding educational disability laws.

I was a client of Ann Paradis from November of 2015-March 2016. I had received an unfortunate and wrongful dismissal from a graduate school academic program in October of 2015 and sought Ann's legal assistance. Ann was clear with me in the beginning that the school had committed a number of violations and that she would help me fight for justice. These violations included mistreatment, retaliation, and denial of due process rights. I noticed that after I had agreed to hire Ann, it became more and more difficult to get a hold of her via phone or email. On two occasions, she sent out letters to the school with multiple errors before receiving my approval. She seemed very irritated that I did not approve of this. I had put in a great deal of time organizing my documents and evidence that were pertinent to the case, but I never got the feeling that she thoroughly reviewed them. After spending three weeks drafting a letter for Ann's review with the help of a family attorney, Ann unexpectedly sent me an email, stating she was declining to provide any more legal assistance. She refused to even read the letter that I had spent so much time on. Now, I must hire another attorney and pay another hefty fee just to get them on board with my case. I would be extremely hesitant to hire Ann as your attorney for any matter.

Not sure why Rick would be running an ad for clients when he ignores the ones who hire him. I had a phone conversation with him and he was very nice. I dropped off my wills for his review and nearly 2 months later we still didn't have any progress on our new trust and new wills.. I notified him that we had a closing coming up and we needed the trust for the closing. he completely ignored me and I finally just went over and picked up the documents I had left for him. when I called him back I got connected to a Google voice. people who are paying for these ads are passing that cost on to their clients.

What an Estate Planning Lawyer Can Do for You

An estate planning lawyer helps individuals plan for the management and distribution of their assets after death or during incapacitation. Their services involve drafting important legal documents, such as wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives. Estate planning attorneys work to ensure that your assets are transferred according to your wishes, minimize tax liabilities, and avoid probate court. They also help clients plan for potential long-term care needs and protect their estate from being diminished by healthcare costs.

By working with an estate planning lawyer, you can have peace of mind knowing that your loved ones will be cared for and that your estate will be managed efficiently and according to your desires.

When Should I Hire an Estate Planning Lawyer?

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is beneficial in many situations, especially when you want to ensure that your assets are handled properly after death. Common reasons to hire an estate planning lawyer include:

  • Drafting a will: If you want to clearly define how your assets will be distributed after death, an attorney can draft a legally sound will.
  • Creating a trust: For those looking to avoid probate or provide for loved ones over time, setting up a trust can help manage the distribution of assets.
  • Planning for incapacity: An estate lawyer can help draft powers of attorney and healthcare directives so that your financial and medical decisions are made by someone you trust if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimizing estate taxes: If your estate is large, a lawyer can help create strategies to reduce or eliminate federal and state estate taxes.
  • Special circumstances: If you have minor children, blended families, or complex assets like businesses, an estate planning lawyer can create tailored solutions.
  • Guardianship or conservatorship: If you want to designate guardians for minor children or ensure proper care for incapacitated adults, an attorney can help.

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is especially important if your estate is complex or if you want to ensure that your wishes are properly followed.

What Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Do?

An estate planning lawyer provides a range of services designed to help you organize your affairs and ensure your estate is managed according to your wishes. They can:

  • Draft wills and trusts: Creating legally binding documents that dictate how your assets will be distributed and managed.
  • Create powers of attorney and healthcare directives: Appointing someone to make financial or medical decisions for you if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimize taxes: Developing strategies to reduce estate taxes, gift taxes, and other financial liabilities for your heirs.
  • Help avoid probate: Structuring your estate plan to avoid probate, which can save time and money for your beneficiaries.
  • Advise on long-term care planning: Helping you plan for potential healthcare needs in the future, including Medicaid planning and protecting assets from being depleted by nursing home costs.
  • Assist with beneficiary designations: Ensuring that life insurance policies, retirement accounts, and other financial instruments are correctly designated.
  • Handle probate and estate administration: If a loved one has passed away, an estate planning lawyer can help guide you through the probate process or act as an executor.

How Are Estate Planning Lawyers Paid?

Estate planning lawyers typically charge for their services in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of your estate and the type of services you need. Common payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: Many estate planning services, such as drafting a will or trust, are charged on a flat-fee basis. The fee covers all work related to preparing the document.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex planning, such as estate tax strategy or trust administration, lawyers may charge by the hour. Rates vary based on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Retainer: Some lawyers require a retainer for more complex cases, such as ongoing trust management or estate administration. The retainer is an upfront payment that covers future legal services.

It’s important to discuss fees with your lawyer upfront to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an estate planning lawyer depends on the complexity of your estate and the services you require. Here are some general guidelines:

  • Simple wills or powers of attorney: A straightforward will or power of attorney may cost between $300 and $1,500, depending on your location and the lawyer’s experience.
  • Trust creation: Establishing a trust, such as a living trust or revocable trust, can cost between $1,000 and $3,000 or more, depending on the complexity of your assets and estate planning needs.
  • Comprehensive estate planning packages: Some lawyers offer packages that include wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives, which may range from $2,000 to $5,000 or more, depending on the estate’s complexity.
  • Hourly rates: For ongoing services like estate administration or tax planning, lawyers may charge hourly rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience.

Always get a clear estimate of costs during your initial consultation to ensure the services fit within your budget.

Top Questions to Ask an Estate Planning Lawyer

Before hiring an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to ask questions to ensure they are the right fit for your needs. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What is your experience with estate planning?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience drafting wills, creating trusts, and handling other estate planning services.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a flat fee or by the hour and ask for a detailed estimate of costs.
  3. What strategies do you recommend for my estate?
A good lawyer should be able to explain the best strategies for minimizing taxes, avoiding probate, and ensuring your assets are distributed according to your wishes.
  4. How often should I update my estate plan?
Ask how frequently you should revisit your estate plan, especially if your financial situation or family dynamics change.
  5. Do you offer ongoing support or updates?
Some lawyers provide periodic reviews or updates to ensure your estate plan stays current with changes in your circumstances or the law.
  6. How will you help my beneficiaries if something happens to me?
Ensure the lawyer is willing to guide your heirs through the estate administration process or help manage your trust after you’re gone.

How to Check the Credibility of an Estate Planning Lawyer

To ensure you’re hiring a credible estate planning lawyer, follow these steps:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for estate planning certifications: Some lawyers are certified as estate planning specialists, which indicates they have extensive knowledge in this area of law.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Online reviews on sites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell can provide insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from previous clients who can speak to their expertise and client service.
  • Check for membership in professional organizations: Lawyers who are members of organizations like the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) or the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC) often have a strong reputation in the field.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first meeting with an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • List of assets and liabilities: Provide a detailed inventory of your assets, including real estate, bank accounts, retirement funds, investments, and personal property, as well as any debts you may have.
  • List of beneficiaries: Be ready to discuss who you want to receive your assets and in what proportions. This includes naming guardians for minor children if applicable.
  • Existing estate documents: Bring copies of any existing wills, trusts, powers of attorney, or other relevant estate planning documents.
  • Questions about your estate goals: Write down your goals, such as avoiding probate, reducing taxes, or setting up charitable donations, so your lawyer can tailor a plan to meet your needs.
  • Information on medical and financial decision-makers: Be prepared to discuss who you want to appoint for healthcare and financial decisions if you become incapacitated.

By being well-prepared, you can ensure a productive consultation and begin building a comprehensive estate plan that meets your needs and protects your loved ones.
