My husband had an appeal case with unemployment so I signed up for an advocate. After researching the names on the list and with only a week before the hearing. I called Mr.Sutton out of his business hours expecting to just leave a voicemail and to my suprise he called me back within the hour..originally I kinda thought he was being rude but despite that I chose to go with him anyway..because he did know his law and he had answers to everything I asked him. So the day before the hearing he called to remind us of the hearing and to go over everything one last time..he reassured me we had nothing to worry about and the day of the hearing..he did great and we won our case!! I definitely recommend Mr.Sutton for your unemployment appeal

Great service great people. My wife called to get some elder law information for her parents and the legal assistant who took the call was great, very informative and took her time to understand the issues. Then one of the attorneys (Ryan) called and went through great detail to understand the issues and help us understand what to do next. I would highly recommend this firm to anyone.

Sean took my husbands case with 72 hours left before our first court date. He rallied that entire weekend and walked into court competent and prepared. He continued to work closely with my husband- read all of my husbands many emails containing texts and other evidence and handled both my husband’s and my concerns regarding the case with the utmost care and professionalism. He was strategic in questioning witnesses on the stand and ultimately won the case for my husband. We could not be more thankful that Sean took this case. Thank you Sean!

i hired sean for a custody case a few years back. i have had NOTHING but disappointment with him. he has dropped the ball. lied to me. and straight up doesnt actually do the work he is saying. he will say that he has been busy but he doesnt know i had a friend. that had him as a lawyer as well and he would repsond to her sometimes and not respond to me or vise versa. it has been weeks yet again since he has responded to me. DO NOT HIRE HIM. it has been disappointment after disappointment and really he hasnt helped me do much of anything. i am a single mom with three kiddos. getting screwed by a lawyer is the last thing yah want so dont choose him! he has hurt our family because his lack of doing his job.

This ‘law firm’ will gladly take all of your money knowing full well the outcome and leading you on the whole time and then they’ll pull out and go to another case bc they got new money. Do not trust them, they’ll take up all your time talking about the weather and charge you for it!! No sharks here, just vultures.

Dave was hired to help with issues with a divorce and custody. He didn't seem to have a lot of knowledge initially, but wasn't afraid to do the leg work to find out what he didn't know. He isn't what I would call a bull dog type when it comes to representing Men in a divorce, which would be nice when dealing with the FOC and family courts. At times I wished he would have been much more aggressive. Overall its been a fairly positive experience working with him. He is willing to work out financial obligations/requirements which is very helpful from the clients prospective. Too bad for me I started all the litigation between myself and my ex wife over financial and custodial issues...all it got me was more money out of my pocket to my ex and lawyer and an better understanding of how BROKE our Family Law system really is.

If I could give 0 stars, I would. Initial intake was unbelievably unprofessional with a level of disrespect and disservice unbecoming of any business, much less a professional law firm. Sherry raised her voice when I calmly expressed discomfort at a part of the initial intake Q&A and instead of providing reassurances or more information about why they request the information they request, she yelled at me (as a new potential client) and then ultimately hung up on me, rudely ending the initial consult. How maddening and exasperating to be treated like that. I will be filing a formal complaint as well. DO NOT BE DISRESPECTED BY THIS FIRM or it's unprofessional staff.

Let me just start off by saying for all the negative reviews left by people it’s far from the truth of what and who Varnum is. I’ve been a client of Varnum now almost 5 years. I have personally been in the office and spoke with the receptionist ladies, every time I feel welcomed like I am part of the family. my children are adored and loved they get snacks and candy and drinks every time. They love going to Varnum when Daddy has to talk or see his Attorneys. My lead attorney Jon M. Bylsma Managing Partner of the Firm, and Peter Smit who now is retired but still on my case. These two attorneys at Varnum Law are the face of Varnum Jon always answers my calls, texts, and emails, he protects me and my family. Best Attorney in America. Anything I need he does it for my family, he is a true Lawyer who after being 30 plus years with the firm shows what Varnum is really all about and their values and what they stand for. Varnum isn’t ripping clients off, that’s unethical, Varnum isn’t about doing unethical practices. Varnum has been around since the late 1800s, Varnum is a very reputable Law Firm to trust with your legal needs. They’re a community based law Firm in local charities, giving back to the Community in West Michigan. Nothing in life is perfect, but I can personally tell you if you hired a law firm like Varnum Attorneys at law you will never regret it, you will become family, a repeat client. I personally recommend hiring Varnum for all you legal issues, advice, and matters. Thank you Varnum Family, Jon M. Bylsma and Peter Smit for everything you keep doing for me and my family.

What type of people hire someone this ridiculous 😂 and then to top it off she hung up on me twice! She was so rude to me but as soon as I was rude back she had an issue with me. Apparently they do agreements over the phone too? I wasn’t told that I was agreeing to something over the phone. I’m not 11 😭😂 save your money time and peace, instead of dealing with these people who don’t want to do a job but smoke a pack of cigs. She always so refused to put her boss on the phone which is crazy to me considering she’s the damn receptionist 😂

During one free consultation, Mr Cox convince me to hire him. He gave me so much confidence that my case is a win in front of the judge without any doubt. I wished I had done more research on selecting a divorce attorney. My divorce was in 2022-2023 out of state where divorce was filed. Examples: 1. Mr. Cox was booked in two hearings, in the middle of the court zoom, he left the meeting, another attorney came and said, Mr Cox had to leave for another hearing he was scheduled. My hearing ended. 2. Poor employees retention. Within 4-5 months, I worked with three paralegals and each time I had to resend my documents to them all over. 3. Scheduling a meeting with Mr. Cox specifically before a hearing was challenging. He was late to our meeting and unprepared. Each time, I had to explain my divorce case to him once again. He was always on rushed to his next meeting. 4. In several incidents, the paralegal made an error on my documents. I contacted the paralegal to correct the error. However, I was charged once for the documents sent to me, second time for receiving corrected documents. Bill statement indicated “document corrected-resent”. It didn’t specify, paralegal made the error. 5. In spite of my repetitive requests, my ex wife’s bank subpoena never arrived by the divorce mediation hearing. There was plenty of time to receive it on time. It had impact on my financial commitments to my ex wife. My mediation hearing was a failure. 6. I learned more about divorce mediation online than my lawyer. 7. In one hearing that he told me he represents me without my presence the day before, I received a call at 6:30 AM-PT while driving to work. Mr Cox on the phone asking me where are you? why don’t you join the hearing? Nervously, I pulled over to join the zoom hearing while having issues with WiFi connection. Best wishes!

I got my letter of her being my attorney for misuse of 911 two days before the preliminary exam..I called her the morning after I got it, left her a message and didn't get a call back. Which I take as a common issue when you get hit with a bunch of cases some yours and some county appointed. For the only review I see post being bad..I'm gonna have faith in her more than one bad reviews worth..if she got her family law degree in 1984...I only hope her firm has younger staff to keep her up to date on the new changes to her specialty area. The violence against women's act.. federal crime victims rights and hopefully soon victims of corrupt court practices act so we can finally stop keeping judges who break the law on the bench and make them just as accountable as any other person who doesn't folllow. I look forward to Ms. Hines prob your bad review wrong Victoria.

Seemed knowledgeable at our first meeting April 2014 for my husbands bankruptcy. Talked me into filing jointly depsite having NO negative debts and near perfect credit. Also advised us to make moves prior to filing that he later would tell us was too shady for him to now fix thus eliminating many options for us later on when we hit hard times. After filing and paying him in full we could barely get any response to questions, rarely answered emails or put anything in writing, basically felt like he deserted us after filing BR. In 2016 we switched to have another firm handle our case and they told me I never needed to file BR in the first place! They had concerns regarding how my case was handled by Hogan. New attn was able to get me a discharge in a few months (Nov 2016). It is now Nov 2017 and we are still receiving bills from his office that were paid in the BR and upon discharge (also confirmed paid by BR courts). Do your research! Do NOT let him rush you into an agreement until you have talked to several attorneys! Look at Hogan’s reviews on yellow pages; all one star! He cost me thousands and years of rebuilding credit that did not need to be destroyed. If you go with him, get everything in writing in detail as to what he will provide, when, how he will respond to emails, etc...How to get money back if he does not provide his services. You can file a Grievance with the BR court if you have been wronged by this office. He was located off Plainfeild in Grand Rapids MI at this time.

Hired this lawyer to fight for my daughter after her mother abandoned her for 14 year cooking meth and in and out of jail. Instead of him doing what we wanted in court he bent over backwards and did what the court wanted. Did nothing to help us. He knew I wanted to appeal the decision that he recommended to the courts which was the opposite of what we wanted. 2 months go on and he calls saying he didn't get anything from the courts until the judge signed the order. This lawyer is a joke. Does what he thinks is best instead of doing what's best for is client. Worst lawyer I've ever come met!!

He doesn’t return phone calls or emails but charges for reading the messages. He took months to even file the case. My wife wrote most of the petition with little help. But the worst is that he did absolutely no preparation to learn about the county in which we were dealing with and was completely unprepared for the hearing even though we provided him with all the information he could need in an easily readable format. He did little to support my petition and actually agreed with the opposing council that it didn't sound like a big deal. I knew immediately that I had lost and would not be able to get my son the help he needs. I spent thousands of dollars to end up in a worse situation than when I started.

What an Estate Planning Lawyer Can Do for You

An estate planning lawyer helps individuals plan for the management and distribution of their assets after death or during incapacitation. Their services involve drafting important legal documents, such as wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives. Estate planning attorneys work to ensure that your assets are transferred according to your wishes, minimize tax liabilities, and avoid probate court. They also help clients plan for potential long-term care needs and protect their estate from being diminished by healthcare costs.

By working with an estate planning lawyer, you can have peace of mind knowing that your loved ones will be cared for and that your estate will be managed efficiently and according to your desires.

When Should I Hire an Estate Planning Lawyer?

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is beneficial in many situations, especially when you want to ensure that your assets are handled properly after death. Common reasons to hire an estate planning lawyer include:

  • Drafting a will: If you want to clearly define how your assets will be distributed after death, an attorney can draft a legally sound will.
  • Creating a trust: For those looking to avoid probate or provide for loved ones over time, setting up a trust can help manage the distribution of assets.
  • Planning for incapacity: An estate lawyer can help draft powers of attorney and healthcare directives so that your financial and medical decisions are made by someone you trust if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimizing estate taxes: If your estate is large, a lawyer can help create strategies to reduce or eliminate federal and state estate taxes.
  • Special circumstances: If you have minor children, blended families, or complex assets like businesses, an estate planning lawyer can create tailored solutions.
  • Guardianship or conservatorship: If you want to designate guardians for minor children or ensure proper care for incapacitated adults, an attorney can help.

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is especially important if your estate is complex or if you want to ensure that your wishes are properly followed.

What Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Do?

An estate planning lawyer provides a range of services designed to help you organize your affairs and ensure your estate is managed according to your wishes. They can:

  • Draft wills and trusts: Creating legally binding documents that dictate how your assets will be distributed and managed.
  • Create powers of attorney and healthcare directives: Appointing someone to make financial or medical decisions for you if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimize taxes: Developing strategies to reduce estate taxes, gift taxes, and other financial liabilities for your heirs.
  • Help avoid probate: Structuring your estate plan to avoid probate, which can save time and money for your beneficiaries.
  • Advise on long-term care planning: Helping you plan for potential healthcare needs in the future, including Medicaid planning and protecting assets from being depleted by nursing home costs.
  • Assist with beneficiary designations: Ensuring that life insurance policies, retirement accounts, and other financial instruments are correctly designated.
  • Handle probate and estate administration: If a loved one has passed away, an estate planning lawyer can help guide you through the probate process or act as an executor.

How Are Estate Planning Lawyers Paid?

Estate planning lawyers typically charge for their services in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of your estate and the type of services you need. Common payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: Many estate planning services, such as drafting a will or trust, are charged on a flat-fee basis. The fee covers all work related to preparing the document.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex planning, such as estate tax strategy or trust administration, lawyers may charge by the hour. Rates vary based on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Retainer: Some lawyers require a retainer for more complex cases, such as ongoing trust management or estate administration. The retainer is an upfront payment that covers future legal services.

It’s important to discuss fees with your lawyer upfront to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an estate planning lawyer depends on the complexity of your estate and the services you require. Here are some general guidelines:

  • Simple wills or powers of attorney: A straightforward will or power of attorney may cost between $300 and $1,500, depending on your location and the lawyer’s experience.
  • Trust creation: Establishing a trust, such as a living trust or revocable trust, can cost between $1,000 and $3,000 or more, depending on the complexity of your assets and estate planning needs.
  • Comprehensive estate planning packages: Some lawyers offer packages that include wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives, which may range from $2,000 to $5,000 or more, depending on the estate’s complexity.

Top Questions to Ask an Estate Planning Lawyer

Before hiring an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to ask questions to ensure they are the right fit for your needs. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What is your experience with estate planning?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience drafting wills, creating trusts, and handling other estate planning services.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a flat fee or by the hour and ask for a detailed estimate of costs.
  3. What strategies do you recommend for my estate?
A good lawyer should be able to explain the best strategies for minimizing taxes, avoiding probate, and ensuring your assets are distributed according to your wishes.
  4. How often should I update my estate plan?
Ask how frequently you should revisit your estate plan, especially if your financial situation or family dynamics change.
  5. Do you offer ongoing support or updates?
Some lawyers provide periodic reviews or updates to ensure your estate plan stays current with changes in your circumstances or the law.
  6. How will you help my beneficiaries if something happens to me?
Ensure the lawyer is willing to guide your heirs through the estate administration process or help manage your trust after you’re gone.

How to Check the Credibility of an Estate Planning Lawyer

To ensure you’re hiring a credible estate planning lawyer, follow these steps:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for estate planning certifications: Some lawyers are certified as estate planning specialists, which indicates they have extensive knowledge in this area of law.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Online reviews on sites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell can provide insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from previous clients who can speak to their expertise and client service.
  • Check for membership in professional organizations: Lawyers who are members of organizations like the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) or the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC) often have a strong reputation in the field.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first meeting with an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • List of assets and liabilities: Provide a detailed inventory of your assets, including real estate, bank accounts, retirement funds, investments, and personal property, as well as any debts you may have.
  • List of beneficiaries: Be ready to discuss who you want to receive your assets and in what proportions. This includes naming guardians for minor children if applicable.
  • Existing estate documents: Bring copies of any existing wills, trusts, powers of attorney, or other relevant estate planning documents.
  • Questions about your estate goals: Write down your goals, such as avoiding probate, reducing taxes, or setting up charitable donations, so your lawyer can tailor a plan to meet your needs.
  • Information on medical and financial decision-makers: Be prepared to discuss who you want to appoint for healthcare and financial decisions if you become incapacitated.

By being well-prepared, you can ensure a productive consultation and begin building a comprehensive estate plan that meets your needs and protects your loved ones.
