Hiring Mrs. O’Steen was hands down the best decision we ever made. From my personal experience, she absolutely will go to bat for her clients. She is extremely knowledgeable in her field. Mrs. O’Steen does a great job communicating and keeping me informed of matters involving my case. She is very personable and also extremely professional. I have never been made to feel like I am just “another client,” she makes a point to show true care and compassion for what she does. Her guidance/counsel in my case has been nothing but exceptional. There is no way I could do this without her. Mrs. O’Steen has always been straight forward with me and willing to fight for what is right. If you are looking for an attorney who will fight for you and give it to you straight, Kimberly O’Steen is the best there is!

I was getting a divorce, had a child and had no idea where to go or how to even begin the process. My co-worker recommended Kim, best decision ever! She's very warm, friendly and knows her stuff. She knows Florida law backwards and forwards and can answer any and all questions you have. She was always very quick to respond to my calls, emails and made sure I knew exactly what she was talking about. It was not a short divorce and it was down right ugly at times, but she helped me get through. She did not settle or try to push me into anything that I didn't want, just to "get the process over with". She fought for what I wanted and what was in the best interest for my child. She was/is the most helpful and understanding lawyer/person I've ever met.

After my spouse past away, Kathryn Robbie was extremely helpful in making sure I wasn't held responsible for my spouses house mortgage. The house was not in my name and didn't want to take ownership. She had contacted the banks lawyer and had to appear in court on my behalf numerous times until the matter was settled. I would highly recommend her. She is thorough and follows thru until resolution.

Kathryn was very sympathetic on the onset. She wanted to know my story from the beginning, so that she could truly understand how she could help me, unlike my last attorney. She is dependable and thorough and I am so blessed to have her as my attorney .

Long story short I was taken for a ride on broken promises then broken word. He did NOT fulfill one thing and after second chances, he continued to be as far away from a respected attorney as one could hope for. The final blow was he told me he would reimburse me my consult fee and guess what? That did not happen either. He wasted valuable time I did not have after losing my mother. I would rate a negative if it was possible.

Jonathan Smith assisted me in a situation that had no precedence. We were given 5 minutes before the judge, which turned out to be 40 minutes of questions and answers. Mr. Smith was well prepared. He brought the necessary documentation and the appropriate answers to substantiate my position. He proved himself to be very knowledgeable and competent. My husband and I have used other attorneys from this firm in the past. They have always maintained the highest level of integrity. This was my first experience with Mr. Smith. So I’m sure every client experience will vary based off their factors regarding their divorce but here is my take on it. The firm can be expensive without a doubt. However I am sure there are more expensive and cheaper firms out there. I will be paying off my dues for a bit to come, but you are paying for the experience the firm offers. If I did not seek representation I would have absolutely been taken advantage of by my ex. The firms professionalism and knowledge was shown when my cases counsels started going head to head. I was represented by Chauntel Miller and she did an amazing job helping me throughout the whole process which was lengthy. Not only was she able to get a deal that I was happy with and worked best for me and my child she taught me some renewed attributes such as self confidence and discipline which was definitely lacking during the divorce. She is kind, patient and honest when you are working with her.

Michael is an amazing human being. He truly cares for his client and understands the sense of urgency that it takes when dealing with some of life's difficult issues. I hired him for both a divorce and as an elder care attorney. In both cases he explained to me different routes we could go, but at the same time letting me know about different consequences that could happen. I never felt uninformed but instead confident because I knew he had my back. In my elder care case dealing with protecting my family's assets, Michael again explained every step to me. He has been practicing law for 30+ years and I will continue to use Michael as needed. He is truly a great man!

I am not one to typically write online reviews, but perhaps my experience will save others money. I consulted with Mr Loucel for estate planning advice for myself and my mother specifically about methods to protect assets from Medicare claims (he home). He charged me $500 to do research to confirm an irrevocable trust was the best path. After a couple of non response to my emails, I went to another attorney in the same field. At NO CHARGE, i was given a totally different answer. If estate planning is his specialty, in MY OPINION, he should have know about homestead exemption limits on property which would have negated the need for an irrevocable trust (again based on advice from the other attorney as i am no expert in law.

I believe it sums up my own experience with this attorney verbatim, therefore I don't have much more to add myself. Overall I learned an important and expensive lesson: Pay close attention to warnings of poor reviews. "Not very responsive 2.0 stars Posted by anonymous October 26, 2015 Mr. Britton handled a probate case for me. After he was hired, rarely responded to emails and required multiple phone calls to receive any updates or answer questions. People looking for superior legal representation in Florida should contact Richard Britton and the Britton Law, LLC law firm. I retained Richard Britton and Britton Law to secure protection for my Mother who has Alzheimer’s and had been purposely isolated from our family for a protracted period of time. In under two weeks Matt Hinson and Richard Britton devised and executed on a legal strategy which resulted in an almost immediate and highly positive outcome in a recent Nassau County Guardianship matter. What is unique about Richard Britton and Britton Law is that this pairing is a perfect combination of seasoned expertise, legal sophistication and dedication to professional comportment. This rare combination IS why they were able to achieve what others could not and deftly penetrated an existing pervasive obstruction that I personally know is a block to just outcomes for vulnerable seniors in Nassau County. I know now that there are very few, if any, attorneys who are even willing to take cases that involve this obstructionist legal pairing. Richard Britton is an attorney of the highest caliber. Britton Law, LLC is a rare boutique firm gem that has the confidence to think outside the box, expertise to separate the wheat from the chaff and most importantly has the patience to help those who may be considered a legal underdog. I recommend Richard Britton and Britton Law, LLC without reservation.

We never discussed the reason for the free consultation because he became fixated on the method used to obtain legal guardianship of the spouse. He was reminded that the legal guardianship was not the issue. He advised if his questions on the legal guardianship were not answered he would not represent me and then ended the conversation. Seek an attorney who will listen to your legal problem and provide recommendations. Court appointed lawyer to my DCF case. He had me sign a consent to dependency, which was basically admitting to be a child abuser, neglect, and/or abandonment, or the potential for being one. I had not idea I was signing that, he presented that to me a few minutes before pre-trial and told me he negotiated with DCF to get my kids back, and that it would make the case close out and I would be with my kids again, and long as I signed I would be the best father I could possibly be, and when I tried to read the rest, he pulled the paper from me after I signed it, and would not let me catch the most important part. He did mention answer yes to all the judges questions, which was the final nail in the coffin of me admitting to being something I never was.

This so called lawyer was disinterested in my case from the start. She requested that the best way to contact her was through emails, yet she would take several days to respond to correspondence, she was slow to file simple paperwork, and she was not straightforward about the work that she was doing on my case. In addition, when I asked her a simple question about a filing error she became upset, loud, and hung up the phone without answering the question. Professionalism was not a part of her repertoire as this was not the only incident that she responded to with a bad attitude. I would think twice before hiring this lady.

What an Estate Planning Lawyer Can Do for You

An estate planning lawyer helps individuals plan for the management and distribution of their assets after death or during incapacitation. Their services involve drafting important legal documents, such as wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives. Estate planning attorneys work to ensure that your assets are transferred according to your wishes, minimize tax liabilities, and avoid probate court. They also help clients plan for potential long-term care needs and protect their estate from being diminished by healthcare costs.

By working with an estate planning lawyer, you can have peace of mind knowing that your loved ones will be cared for and that your estate will be managed efficiently and according to your desires.

When Should I Hire an Estate Planning Lawyer?

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is beneficial in many situations, especially when you want to ensure that your assets are handled properly after death. Common reasons to hire an estate planning lawyer include:

  • Drafting a will: If you want to clearly define how your assets will be distributed after death, an attorney can draft a legally sound will.
  • Creating a trust: For those looking to avoid probate or provide for loved ones over time, setting up a trust can help manage the distribution of assets.
  • Planning for incapacity: An estate lawyer can help draft powers of attorney and healthcare directives so that your financial and medical decisions are made by someone you trust if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimizing estate taxes: If your estate is large, a lawyer can help create strategies to reduce or eliminate federal and state estate taxes.
  • Special circumstances: If you have minor children, blended families, or complex assets like businesses, an estate planning lawyer can create tailored solutions.
  • Guardianship or conservatorship: If you want to designate guardians for minor children or ensure proper care for incapacitated adults, an attorney can help.

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is especially important if your estate is complex or if you want to ensure that your wishes are properly followed.

What Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Do?

An estate planning lawyer provides a range of services designed to help you organize your affairs and ensure your estate is managed according to your wishes. They can:

  • Draft wills and trusts: Creating legally binding documents that dictate how your assets will be distributed and managed.
  • Create powers of attorney and healthcare directives: Appointing someone to make financial or medical decisions for you if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimize taxes: Developing strategies to reduce estate taxes, gift taxes, and other financial liabilities for your heirs.
  • Help avoid probate: Structuring your estate plan to avoid probate, which can save time and money for your beneficiaries.
  • Advise on long-term care planning: Helping you plan for potential healthcare needs in the future, including Medicaid planning and protecting assets from being depleted by nursing home costs.
  • Assist with beneficiary designations: Ensuring that life insurance policies, retirement accounts, and other financial instruments are correctly designated.
  • Handle probate and estate administration: If a loved one has passed away, an estate planning lawyer can help guide you through the probate process or act as an executor.

How Are Estate Planning Lawyers Paid?

Estate planning lawyers typically charge for their services in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of your estate and the type of services you need. Common payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: Many estate planning services, such as drafting a will or trust, are charged on a flat-fee basis. The fee covers all work related to preparing the document.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex planning, such as estate tax strategy or trust administration, lawyers may charge by the hour. Rates vary based on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Retainer: Some lawyers require a retainer for more complex cases, such as ongoing trust management or estate administration. The retainer is an upfront payment that covers future legal services.

It’s important to discuss fees with your lawyer upfront to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an estate planning lawyer depends on the complexity of your estate and the services you require. Here are some general guidelines:

  • Simple wills or powers of attorney: A straightforward will or power of attorney may cost between $300 and $1,500, depending on your location and the lawyer’s experience.
  • Trust creation: Establishing a trust, such as a living trust or revocable trust, can cost between $1,000 and $3,000 or more, depending on the complexity of your assets and estate planning needs.
  • Comprehensive estate planning packages: Some lawyers offer packages that include wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives, which may range from $2,000 to $5,000 or more, depending on the estate’s complexity.
  • Hourly rates: For ongoing services like estate administration or tax planning, lawyers may charge hourly rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience.

Always get a clear estimate of costs during your initial consultation to ensure the services fit within your budget.

Top Questions to Ask an Estate Planning Lawyer

Before hiring an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to ask questions to ensure they are the right fit for your needs. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What is your experience with estate planning?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience drafting wills, creating trusts, and handling other estate planning services.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a flat fee or by the hour and ask for a detailed estimate of costs.
  3. What strategies do you recommend for my estate?
A good lawyer should be able to explain the best strategies for minimizing taxes, avoiding probate, and ensuring your assets are distributed according to your wishes.
  4. How often should I update my estate plan?
Ask how frequently you should revisit your estate plan, especially if your financial situation or family dynamics change.
  5. Do you offer ongoing support or updates?
Some lawyers provide periodic reviews or updates to ensure your estate plan stays current with changes in your circumstances or the law.
  6. How will you help my beneficiaries if something happens to me?
Ensure the lawyer is willing to guide your heirs through the estate administration process or help manage your trust after you’re gone.

How to Check the Credibility of an Estate Planning Lawyer

To ensure you’re hiring a credible estate planning lawyer, follow these steps:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for estate planning certifications: Some lawyers are certified as estate planning specialists, which indicates they have extensive knowledge in this area of law.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Online reviews on sites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell can provide insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from previous clients who can speak to their expertise and client service.
  • Check for membership in professional organizations: Lawyers who are members of organizations like the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) or the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC) often have a strong reputation in the field.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first meeting with an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • List of assets and liabilities: Provide a detailed inventory of your assets, including real estate, bank accounts, retirement funds, investments, and personal property, as well as any debts you may have.
  • List of beneficiaries: Be ready to discuss who you want to receive your assets and in what proportions. This includes naming guardians for minor children if applicable.
  • Existing estate documents: Bring copies of any existing wills, trusts, powers of attorney, or other relevant estate planning documents.
  • Questions about your estate goals: Write down your goals, such as avoiding probate, reducing taxes, or setting up charitable donations, so your lawyer can tailor a plan to meet your needs.
  • Information on medical and financial decision-makers: Be prepared to discuss who you want to appoint for healthcare and financial decisions if you become incapacitated.

By being well-prepared, you can ensure a productive consultation and begin building a comprehensive estate plan that meets your needs and protects your loved ones.
