I first met Jacqueline when she was filling in for my attorney and I could not have been more satisfied with her competence. I have since contacted Jacqueline for separate legal matters and have found her knowledgable, responsive and an excellent guide through the legal process. I have recommended Jacqueline to colleagues and would suggest her to anyone seeking professional legal services. She is an outstanding professional, highly competent in her legal knowledge and communication skills, and personable to work with in legal matters.

Jackie helped me through a contentious divorce with empathy and good advice. She was solution-oriented, listened to my needs and priorities, and helped me arrange a settlement that I was satisfied with. Her office was great at communicating and responding to inquiries. I was able to get all notary work completed at the office, as well, making the paperwork even easier. I also worked with Jackie on estate planning. She was quick and informative, providing helpful guidance for me to consider about the process. The will was witnessed at the Portland office, with other lawyers from the practice. I was very impressed with the professionalism of all involved. I've since recommended her to friends, and all have shared my experience - Jackie is a great lawyer to stand with you through this process!

Attorney Lobozzo was God sent. Ever since he took up my case in 2021, he had always believed that something was not right about it. We fought the case together for about 2 and half years. Attorney lobozzo was always a text away and was very responsive. With his experience in the field I don’t think you would find anyone in Maine better than him. We’ve won all our cases unanimously and I wouldn’t recommend any other attorney for all your issues. From the bottom of my heart I thank you Allan and your entire team!

Alan Lobozzo has been an incredible comfort in my life for the past 10 months. I was in a bad situation and found myself with an assault charge.Alan called me back at 6:30 am heard me out and decided to take my case when he really didn’t need to. With his guidance I found Aa and got my life back together. I am now 10 months sober and have received a full dismissal of my case. He is a busy man but please trust me be patient and he will take care of you. Thank you sir!

I had the opportunity to be represented by Mariah and she is by far the most responsive attorney. I had several questions for her throughout my case and she always gave me answers usually within a few hours. I have never really required a lawyer in my life, but she has made the experience very comfortable and easy. I highly recommend Mariah and if I have any friends or family in need of legal counsel, she would be the one I would recommend.

Attempted to have a simple purchase and sale agreement drawn up. I received no responses to my emails after the initial phone contact. Received a very harried call from Krysten Fabri-Smith confirming one item about the property. She had not seen a copy of the warranty deed but went ahead writing the agreement up. It contained numerous mistakes, including misspelling my name. Called and left a message for her to call me back. It's been 12 days and I've not heard back from her. I will not be pursuing this further with this firm.

I have a couple of collection accounts that I want to get removed…. I was going through a divorce and lost track of certain bills/paperwork. Also I have completed a student loan that went into default. I have been making on time payment with the new provider but the old loans still remain as closed/transferred with the negative payments history on them. Shouldn’t they be deleted Since the same loans are now with a new loan provider? It is essentially duplicated reporting them right? I am planning on getting married in a couple years and want to buy a house with my current boyfriend and with this stuff on my report I fear I won’t be able to do this. This was exactly my story until I contacted PINNACLE CREDIT SPECIALIST who did the magic by clearing all the debts and raised my score 804 excellent across the bureaus and even added some positive tradelines on my report. I was able to get a good house with a very low interest rate. Thank you for helping me…. EMAIL:

Pamela Holmes and her amazing team did an incredible job of representing my minor son and me through extraordinary circumstances. She was a consummate professional, excellent communicator (with both my younger son and me), and tireless partner and advocate for us as we endeavored to negotiate our complicated family law situation thru the family court system in Cumberland County Maine. Pamela has integrity. She is an outstanding and creative problem solver, collaborator, caring, and compassionate. She is very well regarded by her peers which made the process of finding other pros needed through our time together easier. Once upon a time when Angela Thibideau was here it was amazing! Now you can’t even get a call back from the secretary. Unacceptable unprofessionalism from a legal group. Angela was so caring and helpful probably why she left the group considering how you treat people now.

I hired Thomas Nale as my Divorce Attorney, and he completely blotched my Divorce Agreement when drafting the final agreement that I signed because I trusted that it was done to reflect the agreements made at the final hearing and during our mediations. Attorney Nale left out so many important details that I as a client wouldn't know to look for, especially when discussed just days before, I assumed everything to be accurate and complete!!! Unfortunately this wasn't the case and I trusted him as my Attorney so I signed it!! I didn't know that I would have to bring a calculator with me to figure out square feet in property measurements before signing!!! Now I've lost many acres of property to my ex-husband thanks to Attorney Nales negligence and errors!! Attorney Nale was hired by ME, to represent ME, and now I've LOST SO MUCH because of him, and my ex-husband has gained so much more than what we agreed upon!! Thanks to Attorney Nale, my ex-husband now owns the majority of my deceased parents property for which my dad's ashes are on!!! Hiring Attorney Nale has been the biggest mistake in my entire life and his negligence will affect the rest of my life!! He refused to fix HIS mistakes because my retainer ran out!! So I paid thousands of dollars for an attorney to ruin my life!!! I also am filing a complaint to the OVERSEERS OF THE BAR due to some unethical statements that he has made and some rules that he has broken in order for me to be able to hire him. DO NOT TRUST THIS MAN. If anyone wants any further details of what he did, and neglected to do, just comment, I'll be happy to share and details. I want the public to be aware!! BTW...Attorney Nale attended my final divorce hearing while driving in his car and his cell signal kept going in and out!! Just one more detail I thought would be important to mention.

If you require representation by a law firm with impeccable ethical standards, look elsewhere. If a cavalier attitude about the appearance of impropriety or being willing to subvert the will of Maine voters to achieve a business goal don’t bother you, then this could be the firm for you! A staffer at Rudman Winchell posed as a 'concerned neighbor', interfering in a vote on a local ordinance by writing a letter full of misinformation in support of one of the firm's clients whose interests would be affected by the outcome. This could not have happened without their knowledge. The lies were bad enough, but the concealment backfired. The advice they provided their clients was not effective; public sentiment went against them. The client claimed in public remarks that the staffer had been let go prior to writing the letter but there's no evidence to support that, nor would that have made her any less of an associate. But all that pales in comparison with their initial strategy, to push their client's proposal past an ordinance which was clearly meant to prohibit projects over a certain size. They built a house of cards on the existence of a minor wording error. Be warned: after being defeated by the voters they still didn’t take no for an answer and tried to get a favorable decision in Superior Court, further wasting their client’s money. The meritless case has been dismissed.

They were fairly easy to get ahold of, but it was difficult to actually get anything accomplished. I spoke with the secretary several times, attempting to follow up on a real estate contract, but received a lot of excuses about his age, and how busy he was. I was promised a callback the never came, so I had to stay on top of them. I spoke briefly with the actual attorney once but he didn't want to be bothered to look into my request and told me to call back and talk to his secretary later. I did, and she let me know she was drafting an email to the seller, letting them know that the attorney did not want to take the case due to "Too many moving variables," which is a totally different excuse. I would recommend working with another real estate attorney. This was a time waste.

What an Estate Planning Lawyer Can Do for You

An estate planning lawyer helps individuals plan for the management and distribution of their assets after death or during incapacitation. Their services involve drafting important legal documents, such as wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives. Estate planning attorneys work to ensure that your assets are transferred according to your wishes, minimize tax liabilities, and avoid probate court. They also help clients plan for potential long-term care needs and protect their estate from being diminished by healthcare costs.

By working with an estate planning lawyer, you can have peace of mind knowing that your loved ones will be cared for and that your estate will be managed efficiently and according to your desires.

When Should I Hire an Estate Planning Lawyer?

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is beneficial in many situations, especially when you want to ensure that your assets are handled properly after death. Common reasons to hire an estate planning lawyer include:

  • Drafting a will: If you want to clearly define how your assets will be distributed after death, an attorney can draft a legally sound will.
  • Creating a trust: For those looking to avoid probate or provide for loved ones over time, setting up a trust can help manage the distribution of assets.
  • Planning for incapacity: An estate lawyer can help draft powers of attorney and healthcare directives so that your financial and medical decisions are made by someone you trust if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimizing estate taxes: If your estate is large, a lawyer can help create strategies to reduce or eliminate federal and state estate taxes.
  • Special circumstances: If you have minor children, blended families, or complex assets like businesses, an estate planning lawyer can create tailored solutions.
  • Guardianship or conservatorship: If you want to designate guardians for minor children or ensure proper care for incapacitated adults, an attorney can help.

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is especially important if your estate is complex or if you want to ensure that your wishes are properly followed.

What Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Do?

An estate planning lawyer provides a range of services designed to help you organize your affairs and ensure your estate is managed according to your wishes. They can:

How Are Estate Planning Lawyers Paid?

Estate planning lawyers typically charge for their services in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of your estate and the type of services you need. Common payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: Many estate planning services, such as drafting a will or trust, are charged on a flat-fee basis. The fee covers all work related to preparing the document.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex planning, such as estate tax strategy or trust administration, lawyers may charge by the hour. Rates vary based on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Retainer: Some lawyers require a retainer for more complex cases, such as ongoing trust management or estate administration. The retainer is an upfront payment that covers future legal services.

It’s important to discuss fees with your lawyer upfront to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an estate planning lawyer depends on the complexity of your estate and the services you require. Here are some general guidelines:

  • Simple wills or powers of attorney: A straightforward will or power of attorney may cost between $300 and $1,500, depending on your location and the lawyer’s experience.
  • Trust creation: Establishing a trust, such as a living trust or revocable trust, can cost between $1,000 and $3,000 or more, depending on the complexity of your assets and estate planning needs.
  • Comprehensive estate planning packages: Some lawyers offer packages that include wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives, which may range from $2,000 to $5,000 or more, depending on the estate’s complexity.
  • Hourly rates: For ongoing services like estate administration or tax planning, lawyers may charge hourly rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience.

Always get a clear estimate of costs during your initial consultation to ensure the services fit within your budget.

Top Questions to Ask an Estate Planning Lawyer

Before hiring an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to ask questions to ensure they are the right fit for your needs. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What is your experience with estate planning?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience drafting wills, creating trusts, and handling other estate planning services.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a flat fee or by the hour and ask for a detailed estimate of costs.
  3. What strategies do you recommend for my estate?
A good lawyer should be able to explain the best strategies for minimizing taxes, avoiding probate, and ensuring your assets are distributed according to your wishes.
  4. How often should I update my estate plan?
Ask how frequently you should revisit your estate plan, especially if your financial situation or family dynamics change.
  5. Do you offer ongoing support or updates?
Some lawyers provide periodic reviews or updates to ensure your estate plan stays current with changes in your circumstances or the law.
  6. How will you help my beneficiaries if something happens to me?
Ensure the lawyer is willing to guide your heirs through the estate administration process or help manage your trust after you’re gone.

How to Check the Credibility of an Estate Planning Lawyer

To ensure you’re hiring a credible estate planning lawyer, follow these steps:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for estate planning certifications: Some lawyers are certified as estate planning specialists, which indicates they have extensive knowledge in this area of law.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Online reviews on sites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell can provide insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from previous clients who can speak to their expertise and client service.
  • Check for membership in professional organizations: Lawyers who are members of organizations like the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) or the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC) often have a strong reputation in the field.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first meeting with an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • List of assets and liabilities: Provide a detailed inventory of your assets, including real estate, bank accounts, retirement funds, investments, and personal property, as well as any debts you may have.
  • List of beneficiaries: Be ready to discuss who you want to receive your assets and in what proportions. This includes naming guardians for minor children if applicable.
  • Existing estate documents: Bring copies of any existing wills, trusts, powers of attorney, or other relevant estate planning documents.
  • Questions about your estate goals: Write down your goals, such as avoiding probate, reducing taxes, or setting up charitable donations, so your lawyer can tailor a plan to meet your needs.
  • Information on medical and financial decision-makers: Be prepared to discuss who you want to appoint for healthcare and financial decisions if you become incapacitated.

By being well-prepared, you can ensure a productive consultation and begin building a comprehensive estate plan that meets your needs and protects your loved ones.
