Dawn and her team are exceptional, and my family and I rest assured that we're in good hands. I confidently recommend to anyone considering their services. Dawn has helped us over the years with trust and estate planning. She and her team are extremely detail-oriented, think ahead and see around corners for things we may not be aware of or have considered, are timely and efficient, patient in answering our questions, and very kind and caring. I'm so grateful we found Dawn and the Georgia, Wills, Trusts & Probate Firm!!

Matt doesn't come across like most lawyers I have met. From the beginning of my legal needs, he takes his time with the details and really gets to know every aspect of a case. He asks questions clearly so he understands and it's almost like he puts himself in your own shoes. He is very much a straight shooter, which I appreciate. Matt is a professional, but he is also a person that you'll feel is a friend. When you choose him, you choose more than legal counsel; you choose a real advocate you can keep coming to. Thank you Matt for all your hard work, and for helping me through one of the most difficult times of my life. You made the transition easier and allowed me to focus on more important things.

Lisa Owen was my third attorney. What I thought was going to be an easy case, rapidly escalated to one of the worst experiences I have ever been through. A divorce. If everything is smooth and no issues at all, maybe any attorney will do. When things get nasty and everything is at stake, you want to be sure you have the right team behind you. I had to changed attorneys twice because I found out as things progressed, the case was beyond the level of competance for the current attorney. One of the attorneys had to withdraw from the case because she admitted it was beyond her abilities and experience. I wish I had saved all the wasted money and time with the first two. All I wanted, was to know, that when we went to the mat "court", the team and person fighting for me, that I had total trust and faith in them. No matter the results, I wanted to know, they were the best. Lisa Owen was professional, 100% on her game, her team behind her including Natasha, Sarah, and several others, were always pushing and driving forward. Lisa actually scared me she is so good. Sharp, articulate, fast thinker, great debator, driven, witty, a total bad as#. She is a true bull dawg and exactly what you want if the case is something that truly matters. Lisa called me on her family vacation, pushed me non stop, she thought about things I never would have, I was in awe of her and her team the whole way through. She ran the show....She directed everything. she was in charge....and that is exactly what I wanted. Yes, I paid a lot of money to hire someone of her caliber, but, I would have saved so much money if I have contacted her first. I am so thankful to my friend that I called who works in the legal system and asked for help and who was the best? I wish I had called her at the very beginning. She said, without a doubt, you call Lisa Owen. What will it cost you if you lose your case? What will it cost you if you don't settle in a more favorable position for you? My divorce was the worst event of my adult life. Far worse than I could have ever imagined. The emotional drain, the physical exhaution, the fear of what may happen. Once again, some couples get divorced and it is a simple conversation and they draw it up and it is over....But if things turn nasty, if things are complicated with your family, businesses, etc, if you think you need the best, if you want the best possible outcome, and the total confidence in the team you hire....I could not recommend Lisa Owen more highly. In my professional career, in any business field, you know when you are working with someone who is one of the best in their industry....Lisa is one of those people, as is her entire team. I am a Marietta native. I am a 25 year veteran in the mortgage industry, and unfortunately I help clients every month go through a divorce. There is usually a home and a mortgage to deal with. You want the best helping navigate these steps. I typically help one of them move out and buy a home, and the other, I help to refinance the mortgage into their name. It is a very structured and a very emotional process. I never thought I would personally go through it myself. I now feel like I have a Ph'D in the mortgage/divorce space. I was going through this to settle my case, but also to learn as much as I could as to the logistics of all that can take place on the legal side. I was an apprentice watching one of the best in the industry, and paying very close attention, because I was the case being tried. I am not a personal friend of Lisa's. This review was not requested. I will rarely ever give a review, but when I do, it is only for someone that I will give my personal approval for them. If you want the best, and if you can hire her....you want Lisa Owen. If you want to buy or refinance a house, call me....if you want to bury your spouse, call me....and I will introduce you to Lisa. OK. maybe not bury your spouse...but you get it. The blog and communication I had with the family of an elderly patient being in Hospice and Dale Sobel went and had all of the long standing legal paperwork redone by 2-3 liars with no contact with the other children who were and had always taken care of the person!!! Seems like money is all he cares about and facts and truth are of no importance to him. DISGUSTING! The kids who had taken care of their parent were written out of the Will and had lied to the patient in order to take all of the money out of the bank!

Positive: Professionalism, Quality, Responsiveness, Value Dale Sobel did a fantastic job for my business. Ms. White has a very difficult job. At the end of the day at least half of a party will not be happy with her because she has to make a decision about her client, your child, and decide which home is best for them. I found her to be absolutely incredible, very fare, extremely direct, and a pleasure to work with. I would absolutely recommend her to anyone needing a fare and balanced GAL.

If you are not the one whom is paying her please do not choose her. I was young and very nieve. child custody cases are very sensative and triggering and she'll take full advantage of this. she'll make you comfortable with confiding in her telling your story only for the purpose of you choosing her as your Gal and will then become very bias and intentionally try to prove the points of the paying party. If you are the paying party she's absolutely great at siding with anything and everything you claim and will work over time to do so. For single mothers living in low income areas please do not pick this women. she'll bring up a case where a mother thats "less fortunate" won to make you feel comfortable tell you how finances don't play a part in the case then she will indeed use your financial state against you and even things happening In your neighborhood that has absolutely nothing to do with you. she'll offer you legal advice to make it seem like she "helping you" only to then turn against you in court. she lacks intuition and foresight greatly and will project what ever she's personally went through and her previous cases on to you. You will indeed input loosing your child while she convinces herself and the courts that that is "what's best" her opinion "what's best" boils down to who financially has more money. I had hope and faith in her hearing my story and using her intuition and skills to see what's happening and actually speak the truth the absolute total opposite happen and its saddens my heart to even have to write this. save yourself and your relationship with your child and do not choose this women if you are not paying.

Gil might be a great lawyer. I had a mediation for legitimation case in Cobb and he where the state appointed him for our mediator and he was completely biased and stereotyped me. My child’s father couldn’t spell our child’s name correctly but he stereotyped me as someone who didn’t want my child to see their dad. He gave legal advice but claimed he wasn’t. He withheld information and made it clear he was advocating for my child’s father not what’s best for my daughter. Mediation felt like a boy’s club. He left many holes in our agreement, made many judgemental comments to me, and dismissed every one of my concerns. I would give my experience 0/10 but google makes me pick at least one star. He’s not the type of person who realizes these are real people’s lives we are talking about. It’s all a paycheck to him.

Gil Howard ,executed my and my husbands will 6 years ago. Recently my husband passed away on June 15th 2021. I assumed with them doing the process and the state of affairs left by my husband, I thought I may have been able to get a consultation . Instead they wanted the 1250.00 retainer fee plus 300.00 dollars an hour. I am getting over breast cancer and funds very limited. I was in a bind and had a question about probate. John was able to see me, I wasn’t even there an hour, and was charged 300.00 which I really could not afford. What has happened to old fashioned free consultation and just not in it strictly for the money very disappointed.

My ex took my Son to Illinois on an order written by a Commissioner in Bakersfield. She wanted a $50 consult fee. I paid $25 in cash, and wrote a check for the other $25. After getting paid and putting out her cigarette, she told me, "I can't help you, take it up in Illinois." That was twenty years ago, without a visitation order, I HAVEN'T SEEN HIM SINCE. I PUT A STOP PAYMENT ON THE CHECK. JUSTICE?

Considering hiring this attorney , but her prices are doubled compared to a few other local offices…so do some research beforehand. Her personality was great and I found some helpfulness in the advice I was given. After my consult I spoke with a friend who hired her as her attorney to gain insight on what it’ll be like working with her. she said lots things would always pop up because of personal events happening in Cynthias life. Which caused delay with her case. She also mentioned her office manager just wasn’t the best to work with and always made her feel stupid for asking about her case or having any questions at all. She ended up hiring someone different.. I will mention.. I didn’t like how her office manager spoke with me when I scheduled my consult either. So extremely rude with snide comments. When I called back to see how I could pay, I was greeted with a different office staff who seemed more polite and helpful to my concerns for payment! I spoke with this lady for about 10 minutes. If I remember correctly her name was Marlene! If you call this attorneys office just make sure to speak with her! Extremely helpful!! Thought I’d leave a more recent review since I struggled to find one. Still debating hiring Cynthia. Will leave an updated review when I have decided.

After researching companies that were successful in cases against HOA's I hired this firm 5 years ago. I asked if they could win and was told yes. February 2023 we had to agree to a settlement. In that 5 years we changed lawyers 5 times. I would call to find out what was happening and was always told that they were waiting on the HOA attorney and that's just the way this worked. I ended up paying this attorney more than if I had just paid the HOA fine. There is no real update from them, unless you call their monthly bill an update. The last attorney assigned did manage to get a settlement worked out. We took it because I was not going to drag this out another 5 years and 5 different attorneys.

This is a poor start. After speaking with the staff and an attorney with the John Miller and Associates Law Firm... I paid the non-refundable fee, agreed to the initial date and time set by the staff and called 1 hour before the appointed time to confirm the appointment. After the appointed time and 15 min before the close of business, I called the office and was informed that the attorney was not going to make the meeting. Summary: the attorney did not display the expected professionalism and courtesy to take the time to call to me, and provide an apology and reschedule the meeting. This is definitely a teachable moment for John Miller and his Associates...provide timely information to the clients and be more considerate of our time. Thank you Keith Wright

My brother and I retained Atty Separk to revise a will and power of attorney documents. Neither my brother nor I had prior experience with Atty Separk and contacted him based on a referral from an attorney in Florida who specialized in legal matters relevant to senior citizens. My brother and I found Atty Separk's manner to be considerate, his communication clear, and his attitude most respectful. His services were extremely helpful, and I would characterize our overall experience with Atty Separk as outstanding.

I used Separk two or three times for a will, advice, and a civil matter. He was ok but always communicated clearly that you were to listen and be quiet, he knew what was best for you, not you. He is very arrogant and clearly communicates that he is superior to you, the client. I became involved in a criminal matter and went to him for advice, whereupon he raised his voice and told me I should know better than to come to him for advice on a legal matter such as this. He was very nasty and mean spirited, which shocked me, because I had an established relationship with him. I called him a few days later to ask for an explanation for his behavior, and he refused to speak with me.

Mr. Spetalnick was extremely combative, unsupportive and literally called me “very stubborn” during our brief consultation. Not only did I feel as if I was being legally mansplained regarding my case but he was actively interrupting and belittling me as I candidly and vulnerably explained my situation. I felt as if he has defended many men in family law cases and was projecting a perspective against mothers in legal cases. He will not be retaining my services, and my hope is with this review he analyzes the privilege and patriarchy that propagate his behavior and will eventually catch up with him.

when my x stopped paying child support, I knew I needed help so I hired Jon Spetalnick. Mr. Spetalnick provided an initial consultation at no charge and thoroughly explained the process and the next steps. Rather than charge me by the hour, he provided a flat fee for his work up until the court date and a 2nd fee if we went to court. My x on the other hand, hired an attorney with a large practice who charged him an hourly fee and billed him for every little thing. Ultimately, we did not end up in court because of Mr. Spetalnick's hard work and expertise. It was clear that Mr. Spetalnick spent a great deal of time on my case and thought through the best way to document and present the facts to my x's attorney and to a judge if we ended up in court. We settled out of court and everything was in my favor. I definitely made the right decision when I hired Mr. Spetalnick and I know the overall cost was much less than it would have been had I hired an attorney who had charged me an hourly rate. Mr Spetalnick can be very direct, blunt and somewhat harsh at times, but don't let that scare you away. He's passionate about his work and works tirelessly for his clients.

She did absolutley nothing to help my case. She just pushed papers. She didn't look out for my best interest or offer ideas of what I was entitled to during my divorce. Thus my kids ended up with little child support and I ended up with no spousal support even though I stayed home with my kids for close to eleven years. We are now hurting desperately for money to live. I personal paid $6,000 for the divorce and ended up paying over $40,000 to go back to school to earn enough of a living to be able to support my children. I am in serious debt now. My ex walked away with everything because Ms. Boga didn't know my rights nor did she fight for my children.

What an Estate Planning Lawyer Can Do for You

An estate planning lawyer helps individuals plan for the management and distribution of their assets after death or during incapacitation. Their services involve drafting important legal documents, such as wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives. Estate planning attorneys work to ensure that your assets are transferred according to your wishes, minimize tax liabilities, and avoid probate court. They also help clients plan for potential long-term care needs and protect their estate from being diminished by healthcare costs.

By working with an estate planning lawyer, you can have peace of mind knowing that your loved ones will be cared for and that your estate will be managed efficiently and according to your desires.

When Should I Hire an Estate Planning Lawyer?

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is beneficial in many situations, especially when you want to ensure that your assets are handled properly after death. Common reasons to hire an estate planning lawyer include:

  • Drafting a will: If you want to clearly define how your assets will be distributed after death, an attorney can draft a legally sound will.
  • Creating a trust: For those looking to avoid probate or provide for loved ones over time, setting up a trust can help manage the distribution of assets.
  • Planning for incapacity: An estate lawyer can help draft powers of attorney and healthcare directives so that your financial and medical decisions are made by someone you trust if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimizing estate taxes: If your estate is large, a lawyer can help create strategies to reduce or eliminate federal and state estate taxes.
  • Special circumstances: If you have minor children, blended families, or complex assets like businesses, an estate planning lawyer can create tailored solutions.
  • Guardianship or conservatorship: If you want to designate guardians for minor children or ensure proper care for incapacitated adults, an attorney can help.

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is especially important if your estate is complex or if you want to ensure that your wishes are properly followed.

What Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Do?

An estate planning lawyer provides a range of services designed to help you organize your affairs and ensure your estate is managed according to your wishes. They can:

  • Draft wills and trusts: Creating legally binding documents that dictate how your assets will be distributed and managed.
  • Create powers of attorney and healthcare directives: Appointing someone to make financial or medical decisions for you if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimize taxes: Developing strategies to reduce estate taxes, gift taxes, and other financial liabilities for your heirs.
  • Help avoid probate: Structuring your estate plan to avoid probate, which can save time and money for your beneficiaries.
  • Advise on long-term care planning: Helping you plan for potential healthcare needs in the future, including Medicaid planning and protecting assets from being depleted by nursing home costs.
  • Assist with beneficiary designations: Ensuring that life insurance policies, retirement accounts, and other financial instruments are correctly designated.
  • Handle probate and estate administration: If a loved one has passed away, an estate planning lawyer can help guide you through the probate process or act as an executor.

How Are Estate Planning Lawyers Paid?

Estate planning lawyers typically charge for their services in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of your estate and the type of services you need. Common payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: Many estate planning services, such as drafting a will or trust, are charged on a flat-fee basis. The fee covers all work related to preparing the document.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex planning, such as estate tax strategy or trust administration, lawyers may charge by the hour. Rates vary based on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Retainer: Some lawyers require a retainer for more complex cases, such as ongoing trust management or estate administration. The retainer is an upfront payment that covers future legal services.

It’s important to discuss fees with your lawyer upfront to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an estate planning lawyer depends on the complexity of your estate and the services you require. Here are some general guidelines:

  • Simple wills or powers of attorney: A straightforward will or power of attorney may cost between $300 and $1,500, depending on your location and the lawyer’s experience.
  • Trust creation: Establishing a trust, such as a living trust or revocable trust, can cost between $1,000 and $3,000 or more, depending on the complexity of your assets and estate planning needs.
  • Comprehensive estate planning packages: Some lawyers offer packages that include wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives, which may range from $2,000 to $5,000 or more, depending on the estate’s complexity.
  • Hourly rates: For ongoing services like estate administration or tax planning, lawyers may charge hourly rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience.

Always get a clear estimate of costs during your initial consultation to ensure the services fit within your budget.

Top Questions to Ask an Estate Planning Lawyer

Before hiring an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to ask questions to ensure they are the right fit for your needs. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What is your experience with estate planning?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience drafting wills, creating trusts, and handling other estate planning services.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a flat fee or by the hour and ask for a detailed estimate of costs.
  3. What strategies do you recommend for my estate?
A good lawyer should be able to explain the best strategies for minimizing taxes, avoiding probate, and ensuring your assets are distributed according to your wishes.
  4. How often should I update my estate plan?
Ask how frequently you should revisit your estate plan, especially if your financial situation or family dynamics change.
  5. Do you offer ongoing support or updates?
Some lawyers provide periodic reviews or updates to ensure your estate plan stays current with changes in your circumstances or the law.
  6. How will you help my beneficiaries if something happens to me?
Ensure the lawyer is willing to guide your heirs through the estate administration process or help manage your trust after you’re gone.

How to Check the Credibility of an Estate Planning Lawyer

To ensure you’re hiring a credible estate planning lawyer, follow these steps:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for estate planning certifications: Some lawyers are certified as estate planning specialists, which indicates they have extensive knowledge in this area of law.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Online reviews on sites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell can provide insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from previous clients who can speak to their expertise and client service.
  • Check for membership in professional organizations: Lawyers who are members of organizations like the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) or the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC) often have a strong reputation in the field.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first meeting with an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • List of assets and liabilities: Provide a detailed inventory of your assets, including real estate, bank accounts, retirement funds, investments, and personal property, as well as any debts you may have.
  • List of beneficiaries: Be ready to discuss who you want to receive your assets and in what proportions. This includes naming guardians for minor children if applicable.
  • Existing estate documents: Bring copies of any existing wills, trusts, powers of attorney, or other relevant estate planning documents.
  • Questions about your estate goals: Write down your goals, such as avoiding probate, reducing taxes, or setting up charitable donations, so your lawyer can tailor a plan to meet your needs.
  • Information on medical and financial decision-makers: Be prepared to discuss who you want to appoint for healthcare and financial decisions if you become incapacitated.

By being well-prepared, you can ensure a productive consultation and begin building a comprehensive estate plan that meets your needs and protects your loved ones.
