Colin O'Malley and the entire firm worked tirelessly for years to help us reach an agreement in our personal injury case. It was clear from the start that they cared about us and our little girl (also a plaintiff), and fought to find the desired outcome. While we certainly hope to never need COKT services again, we are confident that we would use them again in a heartbeat, and we would recommend anyone in need of representation to seek out COKT to handle their case.

We worked with a number of real estate lawyers with mixed results until we found Dave. Dave has now guided us through a number of personal and investment property real estate transactions well as supported new residential construction transactions . Dave is readily accessible and extremely responsive. He has a no BS manner that has served us well in numerous negotiations and sticky situations. He is extremely knowledgeable and very experienced. Highly recommend him for anyone embarking on purchasing their first house to those , like us, managing multiple properties and transactions.

This lawyer was unable to deal with a case of abusive mother with OP against her. The case was done so unprofessional that she got the majority of kids time, despite being homeless and jobless. Lawyer was unable to send appropriate documents on time, file simple motions and the case was lost. May be all of that was staged and they just had a deal with opposite side.

Adam, has been my attorney for the past 15 years and counting. He has handled a multitude of cases; from family court, business litigation, to criminal (DUI) cases. No matter your situation you can't go wrong with Adam. Adam has been practicing law for the better part of 40 years and knows how things will shake out. He has earned the respect from his colleagues in and out of the courtroom. All of the Judges seem to know him and respect him. I would strongly suggest hiring Adam stillo for any legal matter your facing. If it's not something he thinks he can handle, he will let you know. He's also very fair when it comes to billing and willing to work with clients on payment. Thank you for all your help over the years!

For the past 17 years, Jeff has provided excellent advice and professional competence in preparing and updating my estate plan. I have been very thankful for Jeff’s caring expertise as I have navigated several major life changes including the death of my parents. My parents provided a well-organized estate plan for my brother and myself. I also wanted to give my family the gift of an excellent estate plan that we could discuss in advance. Jeff guided this process, raising questions and highlighting all the decisions that I needed to make. I would give Jeff my highest recommendation.

Do not recommend, poor time management, lack of professionalism, and lack of communication. I was told it would be within reason to have my documents made in a month so I made sure to start working with this group providing all necessary documents 2 months in advance of my wedding. I was assigned the team with Bona Doci, Chelsea Jannereth, and Frank Krautwald. After many attempts at contacting them via email, phone calls, voice messages I found out they had not gotten very far with my case which in the end made me have to delay my planned wedding date in May, cancel family members flights, and stress about not knowing when they would finish my documents. Chelsea Jannereth made many promises that my documents draft would be done and was unable to fulfill the deadline she gave. In the end I got my documents a little over 2 months later and found typos with names and addresses that I ended up having to correct myself.

I wouldn’t recommend this law office. I’ve had a family court case for quite a few years and my previous attorney was moving to Chicago (LOVED her) and I needed someone new to take her place. Just on google reviews alone you’d think this would be a decent experience. I was called by Matthew Dorich who said HE would take on my case and I agreed. After that I never met Matt. They sent me a subpar attorney from Peoria to fill in. So not only was I unhappy with my representation I was paying his traveling costs when if matt would have represented me, Matt lived in Springfield. Then, they let me know I’d have to speak with a paralegal and it took them weeks to follow up with me the first time. Every time Marilu would send emails she was very rude. For the amount of money you have to pay you’d think they at least understand compassion or kindness, but they don’t. It gets worse. Noah, my subpar attorney, left the practice and no one said anything to me about it and then marilu was angry with me for emailing him with questions about my case. I will never recommend this law office. Stay away if you can.

Working in a very customer-centric environment, my expectations of customer service tend to be sky high. I value promptness, professionalism and an attention to detail. For my recent (and very first) home purchase I worked Mike Anselmo and could not have had a more pleasant experience. From the initial phone call to my closing, everything was absolutely seamless. Mike answered all of my questions in detail, but also in a way that was easy for me to understand. The ease and comfort I had in dealing with all of the individuals from this firm is reason alone for me to highly recommend them.

I moved out of an apartment recently and checked all of the normal, necessary boxes in doing so. However, the building management company tried to sneak in more month of rent under my nose by lengthening the lease on the digital lease renewal the year earlier, notifying me that I still needed to payone more month of rent even after I had already left. This was sneaky on the part of the management, but what was I to do? Enter John Brennock! He called me back immediately after I contacted him and asked for all the documents he would need to make an informed decision about how to proceed. The end result? I was out of my lease by the end of the workday and the management company never tried to contact me again.

**Review of John Lynch's Law Firm** I recently sought the services of John Lynch to help navigate some complex issues regarding the structuring of my home ownership and business, specifically around setting up an LLC to manage a trust related to a duplex I am renting in Chicago. Unfortunately, my experience has been far from satisfactory. During our initial consultation, John provided a quote for setting up the LLC. However, what followed was a frustrating two-month process marred by significant errors. Despite my repeated attempts to communicate the correct name for the LLC, John still registered it incorrectly, leading to further delays and complications as I was forced to rename the LLC. To make matters worse, I received an unexpected bill after the error, which I contested, believing it to be due to the additional hours needed to correct the name—an issue that should not have arisen had John double-checked my communications. Despite raising these concerns, I felt ignored, as my requests for clarity on the billing were brushed aside, and I was instead met with a notice of delinquency. I also discovered unexplained charges related to my requests for corrections that had been mishandled. It's clear that poor organization and a lack of attention to detail have led to unnecessary costs on my end. Even more concerning, I recently reached out to John about the trust document, as an external lawyer reviewed it and flagged the absence of a residuary clause—something critical that needs to be addressed promptly. I am demanding that John rectify this issue without further delay, as it has significantly hampered my plans and incurred additional expenses. To further complicate matters, I received a notice of delinquency that included a bill for an annual report filing fee that John never communicated to me. Neither John nor I have any records of this bill, and it appears he was notified by the state months ago but failed to inform me until now, leading to a late fee. This lack of communication and oversight is utterly unacceptable. Based on my experience, I feel compelled to report John Lynch to the Illinois Bar Association and the Better Business Bureau to warn others about the lack of professionalism and disorganized service I encountered. It’s clear I’m not alone in feeling this way, as reflected in other reviews I've seen. In summary, I cannot recommend John Lynch's law firm. The combination of mismanagement, poor communication, and unprofessional handling of my case has caused significant stress and financial strain. Proceed with caution if you choose to engage his services.

I give Denise Cahill no marks because she deserves not one. In order to fill this out you still must Rate! We needed a lawyer to handle our Autistic child. We had discussed our situation over the phone with a Free Consultation she was saying we had a good case and was totally on board with our goals. Once we got to the consultation she changed her story on which way to go once she had our retainer and consult. Fee she pulled the bait on switch on us and said she doesn't think she can meet our goals w/o even looking at the docs. She then asked for more $ if we wanted her to proceed that our case was too complicated! This was in an email all being after only one week and two pages of documents. She wrote one letter to the schools atty. Stating she was retained by us and stated if we don't give her more $ she'll drop our case! How does someone get away with this kind of behavior? She shld. Be disbarred for telling me all this and stating "my kid is complicated" after laying down thousands of dollars!!!! Ms. Cahill is only a glorified advocate but really at best a con-man/woman!!!!!

Im having issues with my son at his current school. I needed someone aggressive, organized and experienced with special needs education issues. I specifically wanted her to fight for another placement for my son so he could go to a therapeutic day school as he needs intensive behavior modification Instead, at the IEP meeting, she focused on minute, insignificant details in regards to his goals that were not important to me. I had to refocus on the placement issue, but she did not fight for it. Later, she casually told me that I would not get what I wanted anyway. I feel awful as I spent the only savings that I had.

We used Gail for divorce mediation. She was late for every appointment. She clearly hadn't ever review anything prior to our meetings and then never sent us our final documents. She was supposed to connect us with a lawyer at the end who 'she works with' to finalize and file our case, she did not do that, she completely disappeared once our last payment was sent. I called and emailed many times and no one responded. She was slow during meetings and wasn't much help with any questions we had. If it hadn't been during a pandemic we would have changed mediator. Ours was a simple divorce, I would hate someone in the middle of a stressful divorce to have to deal with this unprofessionalism on top of that.

We had requested a thirty minute consultation to determine the feasibility of our case in person. It went over to an hour long, which we were fine with paying for that extra time. What we were NOT fine with is that we were not consulted on any pre-meeting billable hours nor had we approved any pre-meeting billable hours. What turned from a small consultation fee turned into a nightmare of him sending us a bill for hours of "service" on the topic that probably took no more than 15 minutes for him to write up, totaling up to over $1,000! I have visited with several attorneys in the past on consultations and no one has EVER tried to bill me in this proposterous manner. I would never never hire or recommend this individual. Luckily, we fought that bill and sent him a check for the consultation fee amount which is what was the AGREED upon fee, after all, we did not HIRE him to do any research. IT WAS A CONSULTATION.

The worst experience I have ever had by far. Hired him to mediate maintenance issue. After paying for the initial consultation separately and then paying a retainer he never produced. Would not return phone calls. After his lack of professionalism I requested a refund of retainer, it took him three weeks to provide that and a billing statement where he had double charged me for the initial consultation and marked it half price and charged for bogus hours looking over paperwork related to the case. Took two weeks to get a response from him where he reconciled the double charge and reduced his hours billed. It cost me two months because I was referred here by a friend. Do not go here, you have been warned.

We hired him for house purchase. The whole time, the only job he does is to forward emails to the other lawyer. No consultation about strategy. No information about legal procedure. Do not even answer questions through phone call or emails. The only reason we have to use him is that IL requires a lawyer for house purchase legal agreement. Other than that he provide no value at all.

What an Estate Planning Lawyer Can Do for You

An estate planning lawyer helps individuals plan for the management and distribution of their assets after death or during incapacitation. Their services involve drafting important legal documents, such as wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives. Estate planning attorneys work to ensure that your assets are transferred according to your wishes, minimize tax liabilities, and avoid probate court. They also help clients plan for potential long-term care needs and protect their estate from being diminished by healthcare costs.

By working with an estate planning lawyer, you can have peace of mind knowing that your loved ones will be cared for and that your estate will be managed efficiently and according to your desires.

When Should I Hire an Estate Planning Lawyer?

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is beneficial in many situations, especially when you want to ensure that your assets are handled properly after death. Common reasons to hire an estate planning lawyer include:

  • Drafting a will: If you want to clearly define how your assets will be distributed after death, an attorney can draft a legally sound will.
  • Creating a trust: For those looking to avoid probate or provide for loved ones over time, setting up a trust can help manage the distribution of assets.
  • Planning for incapacity: An estate lawyer can help draft powers of attorney and healthcare directives so that your financial and medical decisions are made by someone you trust if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimizing estate taxes: If your estate is large, a lawyer can help create strategies to reduce or eliminate federal and state estate taxes.
  • Special circumstances: If you have minor children, blended families, or complex assets like businesses, an estate planning lawyer can create tailored solutions.
  • Guardianship or conservatorship: If you want to designate guardians for minor children or ensure proper care for incapacitated adults, an attorney can help.

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is especially important if your estate is complex or if you want to ensure that your wishes are properly followed.

What Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Do?

An estate planning lawyer provides a range of services designed to help you organize your affairs and ensure your estate is managed according to your wishes. They can:

  • Draft wills and trusts: Creating legally binding documents that dictate how your assets will be distributed and managed.
  • Create powers of attorney and healthcare directives: Appointing someone to make financial or medical decisions for you if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimize taxes: Developing strategies to reduce estate taxes, gift taxes, and other financial liabilities for your heirs.
  • Help avoid probate: Structuring your estate plan to avoid probate, which can save time and money for your beneficiaries.
  • Advise on long-term care planning: Helping you plan for potential healthcare needs in the future, including Medicaid planning and protecting assets from being depleted by nursing home costs.
  • Assist with beneficiary designations: Ensuring that life insurance policies, retirement accounts, and other financial instruments are correctly designated.
  • Handle probate and estate administration: If a loved one has passed away, an estate planning lawyer can help guide you through the probate process or act as an executor.

How Are Estate Planning Lawyers Paid?

Estate planning lawyers typically charge for their services in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of your estate and the type of services you need. Common payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: Many estate planning services, such as drafting a will or trust, are charged on a flat-fee basis. The fee covers all work related to preparing the document.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex planning, such as estate tax strategy or trust administration, lawyers may charge by the hour. Rates vary based on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Retainer: Some lawyers require a retainer for more complex cases, such as ongoing trust management or estate administration. The retainer is an upfront payment that covers future legal services.

It’s important to discuss fees with your lawyer upfront to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an estate planning lawyer depends on the complexity of your estate and the services you require. Here are some general guidelines:

  • Simple wills or powers of attorney: A straightforward will or power of attorney may cost between $300 and $1,500, depending on your location and the lawyer’s experience.
  • Trust creation: Establishing a trust, such as a living trust or revocable trust, can cost between $1,000 and $3,000 or more, depending on the complexity of your assets and estate planning needs.
  • Comprehensive estate planning packages: Some lawyers offer packages that include wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives, which may range from $2,000 to $5,000 or more, depending on the estate’s complexity.
  • Hourly rates: For ongoing services like estate administration or tax planning, lawyers may charge hourly rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience.

Always get a clear estimate of costs during your initial consultation to ensure the services fit within your budget.

Top Questions to Ask an Estate Planning Lawyer

Before hiring an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to ask questions to ensure they are the right fit for your needs. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What is your experience with estate planning?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience drafting wills, creating trusts, and handling other estate planning services.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a flat fee or by the hour and ask for a detailed estimate of costs.
  3. What strategies do you recommend for my estate?
A good lawyer should be able to explain the best strategies for minimizing taxes, avoiding probate, and ensuring your assets are distributed according to your wishes.
  4. How often should I update my estate plan?
Ask how frequently you should revisit your estate plan, especially if your financial situation or family dynamics change.
  5. Do you offer ongoing support or updates?
Some lawyers provide periodic reviews or updates to ensure your estate plan stays current with changes in your circumstances or the law.
  6. How will you help my beneficiaries if something happens to me?
Ensure the lawyer is willing to guide your heirs through the estate administration process or help manage your trust after you’re gone.

How to Check the Credibility of an Estate Planning Lawyer

To ensure you’re hiring a credible estate planning lawyer, follow these steps:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for estate planning certifications: Some lawyers are certified as estate planning specialists, which indicates they have extensive knowledge in this area of law.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Online reviews on sites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell can provide insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from previous clients who can speak to their expertise and client service.
  • Check for membership in professional organizations: Lawyers who are members of organizations like the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) or the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC) often have a strong reputation in the field.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first meeting with an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • List of assets and liabilities: Provide a detailed inventory of your assets, including real estate, bank accounts, retirement funds, investments, and personal property, as well as any debts you may have.
  • List of beneficiaries: Be ready to discuss who you want to receive your assets and in what proportions. This includes naming guardians for minor children if applicable.
  • Existing estate documents: Bring copies of any existing wills, trusts, powers of attorney, or other relevant estate planning documents.
  • Questions about your estate goals: Write down your goals, such as avoiding probate, reducing taxes, or setting up charitable donations, so your lawyer can tailor a plan to meet your needs.
  • Information on medical and financial decision-makers: Be prepared to discuss who you want to appoint for healthcare and financial decisions if you become incapacitated.

By being well-prepared, you can ensure a productive consultation and begin building a comprehensive estate plan that meets your needs and protects your loved ones.
