Michele is an amazing attorney and a great person to have on your side. She looks out for you and your best interests. Michele listens and understands her clients and she gets things done. She is quick witted and in the courtroom, hands down. She is who you want sitting next to you , because she doesn’t stand down. Michele is the real deal, great person and attorney. My partner and I are both beyond satisfied with her. We highly recommend her.

I was seeking a simple deed change. I had a consultation appointment with Christopher Alley. He said he would draw up paperwork and send it to me to review. He said he was confident and able to assist us. Instead, he failed to deliver and ghosted us. We sent him a couple follow up emails, he did not respond. He scheduled a phone meeting, and he stood us up (nor did he call and apologize). We called the office and were told he was on vacation and the female assistant asked me to give her 24 hours before moving on to another lawyer. She did not call me back to follow up. I called back and spoke with a male assistant, who apologized and let me know Chris was on vacation and would contact me. Again, no contact. I am shocked at the failure of basic communication skills. A "Hey, I'm not going to be able to help you" would have been professional. My legal matter was pretty simple. I'm not confident in his ability to act professionally or solve simple legal problems.

We are so grateful to AlerStallings for the extremely competent attention they provided to create a new Trust for our 93 year old mother after our sister passed away. Halie Evans was exceptionally caring and put mom at ease from the first meeting. She made sure mom was comfortable with the process and took all the time needed that all her needs and concerns were addressed. The compassion and expertise provided has enabled us to know our mom’s desires have been fully addressed.

These lowlifes aren't even worth the time and trouble of hiring. They are greedy, care nothing for their clients and can't even do their job. I know of an individual they represented and this educated librarian sat there with his finger up his nose while the judge did his job for him. And if you owe them money, they threaten you, even if you are making payments to them. There a lot better attorneys in Columbus you can hire.

Carrie Waide did an incredible job with my daughter's custody case. Her expertise, dedication, and compassion were unwavering, and ultimately resulted in a favorable outcome for my daughter. Carrie was extremely responsive, proactive, and prioritized my daughter's well-being throughout the process. I really couldn't have asked for a better attorney to represent us through one of the most difficult times in our lives. Her experience as a magistrate gives her a unique perspective in advising clients in both litigated and collaborative matters. Carrie truly takes the time to understand her clients’ goals and interests to assess their needs to determine an appropriate course of action to reach the best possible outcome for their family. This past year to year and a half I have had a lot of issues with my ex-wife. To the point that I filed numerous motions of contempt against her and she filed 1 against me. Ultimately we were told to find the services of a GAL to try and help figure out what is best for the children. The GAL we had could not be bothered to verbally speak to teachers at the children's schools even though she was asked to numerous times. When she finally did reach out to the school to verbally speak to anyone she still didn't speak to the teachers that were asked of her. Instead she sent questionnaires based on what she thought should be asked I guess. I called this GAL numerous times and left voicemails without a single call back. I feel as though the GAL was extremely bias as in she kept putting in her reports that she understands why mom feels this way or she can see the reasons behind this but completely disregarded anything mom did to dad. The GAL didn't even call witnesses until right before the original report was due and didn't put any of this in the report but I guess she only did the calls so she could say she did and bill for it. My ex-wife and I had to go through mediation per court order in which the GAL talked about being professional with the mediator and said that we need to reply within 24 hours of messages. According to this our GAL is unprofessional. The GAL tried to change my schedule even though mom works from home and has an extremely flexible job where as I don't and i have a rotating day job. The day of court my ex-wife sent me a message that was completely inappropriate and the GAL came and talked to me saying i need to be more clear with what I need even though I asked for the whole bill that i need to see exactly what this is for (obviously a bill that we had to share the cost of.) I would not recommend this law firm for anything if they operate anything like the GAL did. The GAL didn't have where my son was born correctly in the report, called me by a different name at one point in the report, and just didn't seem to be bothered with actually getting any information from third parties or myself. Lack of communication, professionalism, and the inability to look for whats best for the children was truly sad.

He's great at harassing grieving families and helping criminals exploit the elderly. He's happy to accept money from people other than his actual client so people without standing can harass family members using this person's expertise. He gives advice that can cost you upwards of $14000, but why should he care? He bills by the hour, so whatever happens to vulnerable, elderly clients doesn't matter at all to him. Run. Just run the other way.

As the Successor Trustee of a trust having real estate co-owned by the trust and the son (who died intestate in Arkansas) of the initial trustee, I needed expert legal advice and assistance. From Alabama, I contacted Philip Schmidt by email and provided information for him to review. Based on other legal sources, I was anticipating large legal fees and Probate Court costs with the process taking considerable time Phil reviewed the information and determined the least costly and most rapid approach to getting the son’s interest in the property transferred to his spouse followed by her deeding it to the trust. Phil kept me up-to-date on the developments throughout. Four weeks following our initial contact, he represented the trust's interests at the property sale closing. The qualities that I wanted and needed in a lawyer I found in Philip Schmidt: sound legal knowledge and expertise, integrity, patience, and an excellent communicator.

I was referred to Attorney Stephen King by an attorney friend of mine to handle my divorce. To say the least, my divorce was complicated, both financially and emotionally. Mr. King was more than attentive from the very beginning. He was very informative every step of the way, explaining every aspect of the process to me so that I fully understood the process and my options. There was NEVER a time that I contacted Mr. King, either by phone or email, that he did not respond IMMEDIATLEY! Mr. King always had MY best interests in mind in all the decisions that were made. He consulted me every step of the way and made no decisions without my input. Mr. King brought to my attention things that I would not have even thought of without his guidance. Divorce is never an easy or pleasant process, however, Mr. King made me feel comfortable and well informed thru the entire process. I would HIGHLY recommend Attorney Stephen King to anyone faced with the difficult process of divorce. In addition to Mr. King, his staff was kind and personable. They always addressed me by my first name the minute I either walked in the door or called in by phone. They all gave me the personal attention that is so necessary when you are going thru such a scary and unsettling process. I cant thank Mr. King and his staff enough. They mad a painful process much easier to endure

What an Estate Planning Lawyer Can Do for You

An estate planning lawyer helps individuals plan for the management and distribution of their assets after death or during incapacitation. Their services involve drafting important legal documents, such as wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives. Estate planning attorneys work to ensure that your assets are transferred according to your wishes, minimize tax liabilities, and avoid probate court. They also help clients plan for potential long-term care needs and protect their estate from being diminished by healthcare costs.

By working with an estate planning lawyer, you can have peace of mind knowing that your loved ones will be cared for and that your estate will be managed efficiently and according to your desires.

When Should I Hire an Estate Planning Lawyer?

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is beneficial in many situations, especially when you want to ensure that your assets are handled properly after death. Common reasons to hire an estate planning lawyer include:

  • Drafting a will: If you want to clearly define how your assets will be distributed after death, an attorney can draft a legally sound will.
  • Creating a trust: For those looking to avoid probate or provide for loved ones over time, setting up a trust can help manage the distribution of assets.
  • Planning for incapacity: An estate lawyer can help draft powers of attorney and healthcare directives so that your financial and medical decisions are made by someone you trust if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimizing estate taxes: If your estate is large, a lawyer can help create strategies to reduce or eliminate federal and state estate taxes.
  • Special circumstances: If you have minor children, blended families, or complex assets like businesses, an estate planning lawyer can create tailored solutions.
  • Guardianship or conservatorship: If you want to designate guardians for minor children or ensure proper care for incapacitated adults, an attorney can help.

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is especially important if your estate is complex or if you want to ensure that your wishes are properly followed.

What Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Do?

An estate planning lawyer provides a range of services designed to help you organize your affairs and ensure your estate is managed according to your wishes. They can:

  • Draft wills and trusts: Creating legally binding documents that dictate how your assets will be distributed and managed.
  • Create powers of attorney and healthcare directives: Appointing someone to make financial or medical decisions for you if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimize taxes: Developing strategies to reduce estate taxes, gift taxes, and other financial liabilities for your heirs.
  • Help avoid probate: Structuring your estate plan to avoid probate, which can save time and money for your beneficiaries.
  • Advise on long-term care planning: Helping you plan for potential healthcare needs in the future, including Medicaid planning and protecting assets from being depleted by nursing home costs.
  • Assist with beneficiary designations: Ensuring that life insurance policies, retirement accounts, and other financial instruments are correctly designated.
  • Handle probate and estate administration: If a loved one has passed away, an estate planning lawyer can help guide you through the probate process or act as an executor.

How Are Estate Planning Lawyers Paid?

Estate planning lawyers typically charge for their services in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of your estate and the type of services you need. Common payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: Many estate planning services, such as drafting a will or trust, are charged on a flat-fee basis. The fee covers all work related to preparing the document.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex planning, such as estate tax strategy or trust administration, lawyers may charge by the hour. Rates vary based on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Retainer: Some lawyers require a retainer for more complex cases, such as ongoing trust management or estate administration. The retainer is an upfront payment that covers future legal services.

It’s important to discuss fees with your lawyer upfront to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an estate planning lawyer depends on the complexity of your estate and the services you require. Here are some general guidelines:

  • Simple wills or powers of attorney: A straightforward will or power of attorney may cost between $300 and $1,500, depending on your location and the lawyer’s experience.
  • Trust creation: Establishing a trust, such as a living trust or revocable trust, can cost between $1,000 and $3,000 or more, depending on the complexity of your assets and estate planning needs.
  • Comprehensive estate planning packages: Some lawyers offer packages that include wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives, which may range from $2,000 to $5,000 or more, depending on the estate’s complexity.
  • Hourly rates: For ongoing services like estate administration or tax planning, lawyers may charge hourly rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience.

Always get a clear estimate of costs during your initial consultation to ensure the services fit within your budget.

Top Questions to Ask an Estate Planning Lawyer

Before hiring an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to ask questions to ensure they are the right fit for your needs. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What is your experience with estate planning?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience drafting wills, creating trusts, and handling other estate planning services.
  2. How will you charge for your services?

How to Check the Credibility of an Estate Planning Lawyer

To ensure you’re hiring a credible estate planning lawyer, follow these steps:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for estate planning certifications: Some lawyers are certified as estate planning specialists, which indicates they have extensive knowledge in this area of law.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Online reviews on sites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell can provide insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from previous clients who can speak to their expertise and client service.
  • Check for membership in professional organizations: Lawyers who are members of organizations like the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) or the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC) often have a strong reputation in the field.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first meeting with an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • List of assets and liabilities: Provide a detailed inventory of your assets, including real estate, bank accounts, retirement funds, investments, and personal property, as well as any debts you may have.
  • List of beneficiaries: Be ready to discuss who you want to receive your assets and in what proportions. This includes naming guardians for minor children if applicable.
  • Existing estate documents: Bring copies of any existing wills, trusts, powers of attorney, or other relevant estate planning documents.
  • Questions about your estate goals: Write down your goals, such as avoiding probate, reducing taxes, or setting up charitable donations, so your lawyer can tailor a plan to meet your needs.
  • Information on medical and financial decision-makers: Be prepared to discuss who you want to appoint for healthcare and financial decisions if you become incapacitated.

By being well-prepared, you can ensure a productive consultation and begin building a comprehensive estate plan that meets your needs and protects your loved ones.
