I dealt with Dina and Judy was my attorney. They worked so hard and were very compassionate and personable. Judy worked to get me the best possible outcome with my lawsuit and I wouldnt have chose anyone else. I highly recommend to anyone looking for an attorney, especially medical negligence cases!

I have years of experience with the attorneys and staff at Sommers Schwartz. Over that time, I have referred a number of people to attorneys at Sommers Schwartz. These referrals include friends and family, who I would trust to only Sommers Schwartz. Whenever I refer someone to attorney Matt Turner and his team at Sommers Schwartz, I tell them with confidence that they will diligently review their matter and tell them if they have a case. If they do not have a case, they explain exactly why they do not. Referrals that have become clients have had positive experiences. Referrals that did not have actionable cases were given a thorough explanation. Those referrals have told me that this allowed them get some closure. I can recommend them to you because I trust them to friends and family.

Lisa is my attorney at Sommer Schwartz, and is handling many issues across the battlefield. She is very prompt, professional, has her act together, and knows exactly what she is doing. She and her support staff have my highest confidence. Why go somewhere else when she invented the wheel?

She represented me and promised she would get a specific outcome. I recorded the initial meeting. She told me I could trust her based on her experience and if I hired her she knew what to do. She billed and didn’t scoumplish one goal she said she would. You should know if you hire her, ask her to put her opinion of the outcome she expects in writing.

I recently retained Veronica to submit a "domestic relations order (DRO)" for me from start to finish. I really liked that she charged me a flat fee to do the job! She was very efficient, knowledgeable, accessible, trustworthy, responsive and kept me well informed throughout the process. She even did a couple of things for me unrelated to the task she was hired for, out of courtesy and free of charge! I would certainly recommend Veronica Leonard to anyone looking for a great attorney in evey way.

Please do your research before hiring an immigration lawyer! We decided to reach out to Taft Law regarding an E2 business visa. We were told during our consultation that it would be around $6-8000. We talked it over and decided to go with them. We had a few more questions about the process in the next following days and we had told them we were going to go through with it and pay a retainer. After the first initial email we got from them me and my wife decided that we were no longer interested in pursuing that visa. Not because of the law firm but we decided that it was too risky of business for us and decided not to proceed. I sent them an email saying I was sorry and no longer wanted to proceed and apologized for wasting there time and that I was going to pay them for there time they had spent on our file. We had a 45 min consultation, a 15 min phone call followed by a 20 minute phone call. We had no idea that every second of each phone call was being billed out at $480/hour. Long story short they charged us $1740 for a Zoom Consultation, 2 phone calls and an email. And they said that price included things that they didn’t charge for as well, as if they were giving us a break at that price. I feel like they threw the charges at us only because we were no longer working with them. They quoted us 6-8k for the visa and they did about 5% of the work and billed us $1740? Something doesn’t add up. Unfair billing practices! I don’t expect them to work for FREE but $1740 for an email, 2 phone calls and a consultation is ridiculous. I would highly suggest you go elsewhere where they are more transparent with their prices. We are out the $1740 but it’s probably best as there quote of 6-8k would probably end up being 10-14k.

I've had the privilege of working with Mark Sisson and his law firm on multiple occasions, and each time, I've been thoroughly impressed by the level of care and dedication they've shown towards my family's cases. Mark is not just an exceptionally skilled attorney; he's a compassionate individual who genuinely cares about the people he represents. From the outset, it was evident that Mark was committed to achieving the best possible outcomes for us. He listened to our concerns with empathy, explained complex legal matters in understandable terms, and was always transparent about the process. His commitment to justice and his clients' well-being is palpable, making what could have been a stressful experience much more manageable. Moreover, Mark's fighting spirit in the courtroom is admirable. He's tenacious, well-prepared, and always has his clients' best interests at heart. It's this combination of personal warmth, professional excellence, and a genuine desire to make a positive difference in people's lives that sets Mark and his firm apart. I wholeheartedly recommend Mark Sisson Law Firm to anyone in need of legal representation. Not only will you find a highly competent attorney, but also a good-hearted individual who treats his clients like family. If you're looking for someone who will fight for you with both skill and sincerity, Mark is the person to call

My father and I were Mark Sisson's client's. After we became his clients it was very difficult trying to get a hold of him for months, there was a strong lack of communication a year later my father passed away and this Law firm did not hold one deposition on his behalf to fight for him.

I have a Traumatic brain injury, so I truly hope that I am reviewing Mark on the under the correct attorney. I hired Mark Sisson because I was a broken, well educated, established woman that found herself in a position of being completely alone in this world after a horrible accident. Worse yet, the accident was my fault and I was the only car involved (Thank God I didn't hurt anyone else). I called the 1800 call sam phone number when I was lost, in the middle of the night- one of seemingly endless that sleep was out of the question. What I learned: 1. To trust him. When he said he had my best interests at heart, he meant it. 2. I was able/am able to back off and allow him to do his job- and that is scary when we don't know if our attorney's are doing the right thing or if they care. Mark does. He has a heart. He is kind and he WILL NOT LET YOU DOWN. 3. I did not know this man prior to hiring him to representing me. Now, did "I get a ton of cash?" No. But it was FAIR. And most importantly, my car insurance has to pay for expenses caused by the accident FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE. I did not understand the value of this until I really broke down and looked at the numbers. If you have been hurt, I could not think of a better attorney to represent and fight HARD for your best interests.

I hired Burt Sallinger to represent me in a child custody case, but unfortunately, I found his services to be unsatisfactory. He consistently spelled my name incorrectly in court filings and did not correct the errors when brought to his attention. He also conveyed messages to the defendant's attorney inaccurately on multiple occasions. Mr. Sallinger was disrespectful and failed to provide clear explanations of the legal process. When I asked questions about child support to understand my rights better, his response was dismissive and unhelpful. He refused to advocate for increased custody time as I requested, initially providing no reason, and later claiming the Friend of the Court wanted the child to be with the mother longer. There were billing issues as well, with Mr. Sallinger calling me directly for payment when my company had already paid him. His administrative assistant was also rude and unprofessional during phone calls. When I asked Mr. Sallinger to withdraw from my case, he was unpleasant and uncooperative, refusing to forward contacts and claiming he was no longer my lawyer, despite still being legally responsible for my representation. Throughout the case, Mr. Sallinger failed to use relevant evidence I provided to support my position and seemed more interested in reaching a quick agreement than fighting for my rights and my daughter's best interests. He also failed to send documents to the mediator in a timely manner, causing delays in the case. Overall, working with Mr. Sallinger added unnecessary stress to an already challenging situation. I have sent a letter of grievance to the Attorney Grievance Commission due to his unprofessional conduct and poor representation.

Mistakenly hired with little due diligence due to the immediate need and lower cost (seemingly). Rude tone, seems disorganized, frequent typos and errors including exposing other client's information. Did not fight for anything we asked for. Just was a presence, checking boxes. Rate will be just as pricey as any other attorney because he nickles and dimes you to talk to you and do his job. If you want good representation that will fight for you, don't hire this guy. In the end it would have been better to hire a more competent attorney for the higher rate.

Burt has assisted my family on several occasions. He is personable, quickly comes up to speed on the particular situation, and provides insight and feedback on how best to move forward. In terms of bottom-line results, I have never had a setback while represented by Burt. I recommend him without reservation.

Mr. Ellison was very unprepared, advised me to relinquish all bargaining tools concerning my divorce case, had a number of clients simultaneously in other courtrooms on the same day of my court dates. He is unorganized and I would not recommend him. You get what you pay for. He doesn't charge much because of his level of dedication and expertise. I wouldn't recommend this lawyer to anyone. We got our behind handed to us by a more professional attorney with a game plan.

What an Estate Planning Lawyer Can Do for You

An estate planning lawyer helps individuals plan for the management and distribution of their assets after death or during incapacitation. Their services involve drafting important legal documents, such as wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives. Estate planning attorneys work to ensure that your assets are transferred according to your wishes, minimize tax liabilities, and avoid probate court. They also help clients plan for potential long-term care needs and protect their estate from being diminished by healthcare costs.

By working with an estate planning lawyer, you can have peace of mind knowing that your loved ones will be cared for and that your estate will be managed efficiently and according to your desires.

When Should I Hire an Estate Planning Lawyer?

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is beneficial in many situations, especially when you want to ensure that your assets are handled properly after death. Common reasons to hire an estate planning lawyer include:

  • Drafting a will: If you want to clearly define how your assets will be distributed after death, an attorney can draft a legally sound will.
  • Creating a trust: For those looking to avoid probate or provide for loved ones over time, setting up a trust can help manage the distribution of assets.
  • Planning for incapacity: An estate lawyer can help draft powers of attorney and healthcare directives so that your financial and medical decisions are made by someone you trust if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimizing estate taxes: If your estate is large, a lawyer can help create strategies to reduce or eliminate federal and state estate taxes.
  • Special circumstances: If you have minor children, blended families, or complex assets like businesses, an estate planning lawyer can create tailored solutions.
  • Guardianship or conservatorship: If you want to designate guardians for minor children or ensure proper care for incapacitated adults, an attorney can help.

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is especially important if your estate is complex or if you want to ensure that your wishes are properly followed.

What Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Do?

An estate planning lawyer provides a range of services designed to help you organize your affairs and ensure your estate is managed according to your wishes. They can:

  • Draft wills and trusts: Creating legally binding documents that dictate how your assets will be distributed and managed.
  • Create powers of attorney and healthcare directives: Appointing someone to make financial or medical decisions for you if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimize taxes: Developing strategies to reduce estate taxes, gift taxes, and other financial liabilities for your heirs.
  • Help avoid probate: Structuring your estate plan to avoid probate, which can save time and money for your beneficiaries.
  • Advise on long-term care planning: Helping you plan for potential healthcare needs in the future, including Medicaid planning and protecting assets from being depleted by nursing home costs.
  • Assist with beneficiary designations: Ensuring that life insurance policies, retirement accounts, and other financial instruments are correctly designated.
  • Handle probate and estate administration: If a loved one has passed away, an estate planning lawyer can help guide you through the probate process or act as an executor.

How Are Estate Planning Lawyers Paid?

Estate planning lawyers typically charge for their services in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of your estate and the type of services you need. Common payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: Many estate planning services, such as drafting a will or trust, are charged on a flat-fee basis. The fee covers all work related to preparing the document.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex planning, such as estate tax strategy or trust administration, lawyers may charge by the hour. Rates vary based on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Retainer: Some lawyers require a retainer for more complex cases, such as ongoing trust management or estate administration. The retainer is an upfront payment that covers future legal services.

It’s important to discuss fees with your lawyer upfront to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an estate planning lawyer depends on the complexity of your estate and the services you require. Here are some general guidelines:

  • Simple wills or powers of attorney: A straightforward will or power of attorney may cost between $300 and $1,500, depending on your location and the lawyer’s experience.
  • Trust creation: Establishing a trust, such as a living trust or revocable trust, can cost between $1,000 and $3,000 or more, depending on the complexity of your assets and estate planning needs.
  • Comprehensive estate planning packages: Some lawyers offer packages that include wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives, which may range from $2,000 to $5,000 or more, depending on the estate’s complexity.
  • Hourly rates: For ongoing services like estate administration or tax planning, lawyers may charge hourly rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience.

Always get a clear estimate of costs during your initial consultation to ensure the services fit within your budget.

Top Questions to Ask an Estate Planning Lawyer

Before hiring an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to ask questions to ensure they are the right fit for your needs. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What is your experience with estate planning?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience drafting wills, creating trusts, and handling other estate planning services.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a flat fee or by the hour and ask for a detailed estimate of costs.
  3. What strategies do you recommend for my estate?
A good lawyer should be able to explain the best strategies for minimizing taxes, avoiding probate, and ensuring your assets are distributed according to your wishes.
  4. How often should I update my estate plan?
Ask how frequently you should revisit your estate plan, especially if your financial situation or family dynamics change.
  5. Do you offer ongoing support or updates?
Some lawyers provide periodic reviews or updates to ensure your estate plan stays current with changes in your circumstances or the law.
  6. How will you help my beneficiaries if something happens to me?
Ensure the lawyer is willing to guide your heirs through the estate administration process or help manage your trust after you’re gone.

How to Check the Credibility of an Estate Planning Lawyer

To ensure you’re hiring a credible estate planning lawyer, follow these steps:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for estate planning certifications: Some lawyers are certified as estate planning specialists, which indicates they have extensive knowledge in this area of law.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Online reviews on sites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell can provide insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from previous clients who can speak to their expertise and client service.
  • Check for membership in professional organizations: Lawyers who are members of organizations like the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) or the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC) often have a strong reputation in the field.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first meeting with an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • List of assets and liabilities: Provide a detailed inventory of your assets, including real estate, bank accounts, retirement funds, investments, and personal property, as well as any debts you may have.
  • List of beneficiaries: Be ready to discuss who you want to receive your assets and in what proportions. This includes naming guardians for minor children if applicable.
  • Existing estate documents: Bring copies of any existing wills, trusts, powers of attorney, or other relevant estate planning documents.
  • Questions about your estate goals: Write down your goals, such as avoiding probate, reducing taxes, or setting up charitable donations, so your lawyer can tailor a plan to meet your needs.
  • Information on medical and financial decision-makers: Be prepared to discuss who you want to appoint for healthcare and financial decisions if you become incapacitated.

By being well-prepared, you can ensure a productive consultation and begin building a comprehensive estate plan that meets your needs and protects your loved ones.
