I worked with Judy from RELaw, APC for the creation of an escrow company and several changes and updates for the company with the state of California. Judy was absolutely fantastic. She was always happy to help, extremely thoughtful, and possesses an extremely high level of knowledge about escrow licenses in the state. I only wish I had more escrow work so that I'd be able to work with her again. An exceptional person and RELaw is lucky to have her. I cannot recommend her enough.

Very attentive to our particular needs. They were kind and professional throughout the process. They made a very contentious situation seamless & smooth as silk. Never thought we could solve these ownership issues but RELAW mediated a solution that worked for all parties involved. Terrific group of legal minds and super humans.

Ed Cainglit and his team at Oak Crest Law Group are truly the best! They are extremely knowledgable, accurate, thorough and great people to work with. They know their trade so well that it makes the overwhelming living trust process feel so easy. There are so many people out there advertising wills and trusts that you never know what you are going to get. With Ed and his team, I know exactly what I am going to get and always know that my family and our assets are in good hands when working with them.

My wife and I were referred to Ed and his team at Oak Crest Law Group to set up our living trust. Rachel answered all of our pre-meeting questions and organized/scheduled our appointments. Ed himself was very professional and also answered our questions (even proposing questions we didn't know we should be asking). My wife and I feel very well taken care of and we look forward to working with their team. I would recommend working with Ed and his group without any reservations.

Randall possesses an innate ability to alleviate the apprehension that comes with legal consultation. His approach seamlessly combines accessibility with extensive expertise. His meticulous attention to detail and decisiveness not only streamline processes but also yield resolutions that are comprehensive and definitive, minimizing financial expenditures for his clients. Entrusting Randall with my business as well as my personal matters has been the best decision by far as he has since evolved into an invaluable confidant and advisor for my husband and I. Without hesitation, I extend my highest recommendation to the Cohen Law Firm, a bastion of unparalleled proficiency and integrity.

Randall is amazing. It can be intimidating to reach out to an attorney and Randall makes it easy. Not only that, he's thorough and decisive, which saves time and money since he solves issues the first time and for good. I engaged Randall for my business formation and he's continued to be a trusted advisor. I can highly recommend Cohen Law Firm.

I have known Tamara for almost 20 years, and at one time professionally worked with her. I held her in the highest regards. Tamara set up an Irrevocable Trust for our family 15-16 years ago. Prior to the trust expiring, we contacted her to set up an appointment to meet, and go over our options. We received a random bill, prior to our appointment for $600.00 with a description of "RESEARCH." Keep in mind that she represented herself as one of the leading expert in CA in Trust Law at the initial meeting, even stating she taught Trust Law at a local law school. When we called for an explanation, we were informed that she had to research our options, as what to do at the end of the trust. It was at this point, that we informed her that her services were no longer needed! We contacted another attorney, who knew exactly what to do, and had the necessary paperwork completed, and electronically submitted to the county in 3 days for $289.00. It took only 1 telephone call, and 2 emails, with no Federal or State tax consequences. We continue to receive bills as of this review, with accrued interest, violting Rule 2-107 of the Rules of Professional Conduct of the CA State Bar Association. Neither Tamara, or her staff will return telephone calls, or emails, just continued random billing. We never signed a retainer agreement with her concerning this matter. Just a call to set up an appointment to meet with her, which never took place. Unfortunately this has resulted in a complaint with the California Bar Association, with supporting documentation. We will update this website on their findings. Again I am so disappointed! It appears that Tamara has now expanded her field of practice, and no longer cares about her clients, as evident by their lack of communication. The office screens calls, and refuses to return repeated telephone messages, and emails. I sent an email directly to Tamara, explaining my position, whereas I informed her if I did not hear from her within 30 days, I would consider the account zeroed out, and closed. Did not hear anything for over 2 months, and all we received was an additional bill with interest. I would highly recommend to anyone looking for legal services with Tamara, not only to do your due diligence, but also compare the fast response of other attorneys, and fee schedules. It just appears to me that they are out for money, and really no longer cares about the clients, once they have collected their legal fees! Lincoln once said "the lawyer has a superior opportunity of being a good man." or woman! ⭐

We had a positive experience with Tamara over a decade ago when we first set up our trust. When the trust was nearing its term, we reached out to see if we can set up an appointment with her to discuss what our options would be when the trust expires. After making an appointment for a few weeks out, we get a random invoice for $600.00 when we haven’t even had a chance to sit down with her yet. When we called the office to find out what this bill was for, she stated it was for “research.” First off, this is your specialty & field yet you had to go out and do research on the trust that YOU set up?? Second, shouldn’t you at least advise or get permission from your client before taking the initiative to do something like this then turn around and blindly send us a bill without any explanation or heads up? After a few back and forth with their office, we were under the impression that they understood we no longer wanted their service and they would adjust the bill. Nope! After six months, they had the audacity to send us a new bill with occurred interest on top of the original bill!!! AFTER SIX MONTHS OF NO CONTACT!!! We tried numerous times to get a hold of someone in their office for weeks. But they screen their calls and emails so once they have your money, they tend to not call you back or follow up. And when you call them out on it, they blame their phone system being down or some other BS they can think of. Needless to say, I’ll be filing a bar complaint and highly advise people to stay away from this money hungry firm!

After the passing of a family member, Adam handled the probate with care and efficiency. We were able to get through a busy court system in less than a year. He did so well, my family members used him to set up their estate plan. Also, during a lengthy dispute with an homeowner's association I hired Adam on and he had things moving and settled quickly and fairly. Thanks Adam.

Do not set the bar high. Do not expect a win. No matter what . It may never happen. After he takes a lot of money from the client(like most attorneys) he makes promises and he never delivers and says things at the start and then down the line says he never said that . At first he acts like he is your best friend and is out for your best interest and may very well get one task done to impress the client and win their faith to make you feel like you can trust him. He seems likeable in the beginning. When the dust clears and the client asks questions about what was said in the beginning about a future lawsuit , he gets angry and defensive. Guess sometimes attorneys talk too much. He does know Trust Law very well so that may be a selling point, but tread cautiously. Who knows if he has Actually won cases.

I hired Mr. Bryan on a friends recommendation, he did not represent this friend but he knew of him being an attorney. He started out okay but it was extremely difficult to get a hold of him or to get a call or email back. I was out of state and it was extremely frustrating to not be in contact while my life and my son's fate was being determined while I wasn't there. He wouldn't file papers on time and my court issues increased due to this issue. Ultimately it turned out that Mr. Bryan was contacted by the same person I was fighting against in court and found out that they had mutual friends, after Mr. Bryan was contacted by this person he did not return any more of my emails or phone calls till I asked him to sign a substitution of attorney form. He was EXTREMELY unprofessional and rude to me and I had significant losses due to his lack of integrity and fortitude. I would not recommend Mr. Bryan for your legal needs.

What an Estate Planning Lawyer Can Do for You

An estate planning lawyer helps individuals plan for the management and distribution of their assets after death or during incapacitation. Their services involve drafting important legal documents, such as wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives. Estate planning attorneys work to ensure that your assets are transferred according to your wishes, minimize tax liabilities, and avoid probate court. They also help clients plan for potential long-term care needs and protect their estate from being diminished by healthcare costs.

By working with an estate planning lawyer, you can have peace of mind knowing that your loved ones will be cared for and that your estate will be managed efficiently and according to your desires.

When Should I Hire an Estate Planning Lawyer?

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is beneficial in many situations, especially when you want to ensure that your assets are handled properly after death. Common reasons to hire an estate planning lawyer include:

  • Drafting a will: If you want to clearly define how your assets will be distributed after death, an attorney can draft a legally sound will.
  • Creating a trust: For those looking to avoid probate or provide for loved ones over time, setting up a trust can help manage the distribution of assets.
  • Planning for incapacity: An estate lawyer can help draft powers of attorney and healthcare directives so that your financial and medical decisions are made by someone you trust if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimizing estate taxes: If your estate is large, a lawyer can help create strategies to reduce or eliminate federal and state estate taxes.
  • Special circumstances: If you have minor children, blended families, or complex assets like businesses, an estate planning lawyer can create tailored solutions.
  • Guardianship or conservatorship: If you want to designate guardians for minor children or ensure proper care for incapacitated adults, an attorney can help.

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is especially important if your estate is complex or if you want to ensure that your wishes are properly followed.

What Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Do?

An estate planning lawyer provides a range of services designed to help you organize your affairs and ensure your estate is managed according to your wishes. They can:

  • Draft wills and trusts: Creating legally binding documents that dictate how your assets will be distributed and managed.
  • Create powers of attorney and healthcare directives: Appointing someone to make financial or medical decisions for you if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimize taxes: Developing strategies to reduce estate taxes, gift taxes, and other financial liabilities for your heirs.
  • Help avoid probate: Structuring your estate plan to avoid probate, which can save time and money for your beneficiaries.
  • Advise on long-term care planning: Helping you plan for potential healthcare needs in the future, including Medicaid planning and protecting assets from being depleted by nursing home costs.
  • Assist with beneficiary designations: Ensuring that life insurance policies, retirement accounts, and other financial instruments are correctly designated.
  • Handle probate and estate administration: If a loved one has passed away, an estate planning lawyer can help guide you through the probate process or act as an executor.

How Are Estate Planning Lawyers Paid?

Estate planning lawyers typically charge for their services in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of your estate and the type of services you need. Common payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: Many estate planning services, such as drafting a will or trust, are charged on a flat-fee basis. The fee covers all work related to preparing the document.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex planning, such as estate tax strategy or trust administration, lawyers may charge by the hour. Rates vary based on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Retainer: Some lawyers require a retainer for more complex cases, such as ongoing trust management or estate administration. The retainer is an upfront payment that covers future legal services.

It’s important to discuss fees with your lawyer upfront to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an estate planning lawyer depends on the complexity of your estate and the services you require. Here are some general guidelines:

  • Simple wills or powers of attorney: A straightforward will or power of attorney may cost between $300 and $1,500, depending on your location and the lawyer’s experience.
  • Trust creation: Establishing a trust, such as a living trust or revocable trust, can cost between $1,000 and $3,000 or more, depending on the complexity of your assets and estate planning needs.
  • Comprehensive estate planning packages: Some lawyers offer packages that include wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives, which may range from $2,000 to $5,000 or more, depending on the estate’s complexity.
  • Hourly rates: For ongoing services like estate administration or tax planning, lawyers may charge hourly rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience.

Always get a clear estimate of costs during your initial consultation to ensure the services fit within your budget.

Top Questions to Ask an Estate Planning Lawyer

Before hiring an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to ask questions to ensure they are the right fit for your needs. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What is your experience with estate planning?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience drafting wills, creating trusts, and handling other estate planning services.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a flat fee or by the hour and ask for a detailed estimate of costs.
  3. What strategies do you recommend for my estate?
A good lawyer should be able to explain the best strategies for minimizing taxes, avoiding probate, and ensuring your assets are distributed according to your wishes.
  4. How often should I update my estate plan?
Ask how frequently you should revisit your estate plan, especially if your financial situation or family dynamics change.
  5. Do you offer ongoing support or updates?
Some lawyers provide periodic reviews or updates to ensure your estate plan stays current with changes in your circumstances or the law.
  6. How will you help my beneficiaries if something happens to me?
Ensure the lawyer is willing to guide your heirs through the estate administration process or help manage your trust after you’re gone.

How to Check the Credibility of an Estate Planning Lawyer

To ensure you’re hiring a credible estate planning lawyer, follow these steps:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for estate planning certifications: Some lawyers are certified as estate planning specialists, which indicates they have extensive knowledge in this area of law.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Online reviews on sites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell can provide insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from previous clients who can speak to their expertise and client service.
  • Check for membership in professional organizations: Lawyers who are members of organizations like the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) or the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC) often have a strong reputation in the field.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first meeting with an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • List of assets and liabilities: Provide a detailed inventory of your assets, including real estate, bank accounts, retirement funds, investments, and personal property, as well as any debts you may have.
  • List of beneficiaries: Be ready to discuss who you want to receive your assets and in what proportions. This includes naming guardians for minor children if applicable.
  • Existing estate documents: Bring copies of any existing wills, trusts, powers of attorney, or other relevant estate planning documents.
  • Questions about your estate goals: Write down your goals, such as avoiding probate, reducing taxes, or setting up charitable donations, so your lawyer can tailor a plan to meet your needs.
  • Information on medical and financial decision-makers: Be prepared to discuss who you want to appoint for healthcare and financial decisions if you become incapacitated.

By being well-prepared, you can ensure a productive consultation and begin building a comprehensive estate plan that meets your needs and protects your loved ones.
