Hands down at the top of his profession! I found Mr. Eisen after having trouble getting my other “super lawyer” to reply in a timely manner. I was racing against the clock, with a ex that was trying to sabotage my life. Jordan went straight to work, and was always accessible. He has the experience, acumen, and connections to get the best results. We were able to get it taken care of without ever having to step in the court room. My family now has peace of mind. He also worked on my expungment and he was able to get it all taken care of without me having to appear in court. Thank you Jordan for everything.

I hired Ms.Nguyen on December 16, 2009 to represent my W.C case. As soon as she was on board, she got in touch with the defense attorney and W.C insurance to have my TTD payment resumed at the correct rate. She did it within weeks, which the previous attorney failed to do. Under six years of Ms.Nguyen representation of my W.C case, she helped me get all the treatments I needed for my industrial injuries and processed all legal procedures properly. When I had questions, she was there to answer them. She did a wonderful job. As a result of her great work, I've gotten a good settlement; I'm very satisfied with her work. I would reccomend her to anyone.

Angel was my lead lawyer at Desai Family Law which was the second law firm I hired after a five year ongoing divorce case. The first firm I hired was terrible and I'll just leave it at that. After an initial bad experience with the family law world, I decided to do my due diligence before hiring another lawyer, plus, I was doing pretty bad financially and couldn't really afford to hire any firm. Luckily, my ex-wife's situation wasn't amazing either and she had to drop her lawyer as well due to financial reasons, which resulted in both of us continuing our case pro-per. This led me to a two and a half year long journey where I had contacted dozens and dozens of family law firms and lawyers, getting as much free advise as I could and occasionally paying for an hour or two of consultation whenever I could afford it. In the process, I become very familiar with different lawyers all the way from the Valley down to Orange County. I talked and met with any type of lawyer you could imagine, from highly experience competent ones, to complete amateurs that were just trying to make a quick buck. I contacted Desai Law about a year into my search and received a great consultation from one of their lawyers, but unfortunately didn't have the funds to hire them at the time. Fast forward a year and a half later, my case was on track to go to trial and my ex-wife got herself a new lawyer and so I found myself borrowing money and saving any penny I had, so I could hire one as well. I contacted Desai again and unfortunately, they were not available to take my case. After some convincing and after the the calendar of the owner, Swati Desai opened up, they were able to accept my case. Best course of events in my six year case (not a typo). We had a hearing coming up about a week after I had hired her. After an initial representation by Swati, their new addition to the team , Angel Camino, took the lead role in my case (my case was very complicated with many moving parts) and against my expectations that he will get up to speed so quickly, Angel became extremely familiar with my case in no time. My case was set for trial, and Angel ended up settling before then and against all odds (I forgot to mention that my ex-wife received a pro-bono lawyer which meant she had zero overhead going into the trial and a low incentive to settle as a result). Angel is an extremely competent, savvy, knowledgeable and most importantly - an honest and straight forward lawyer. He is a master strategist and highly intelligent and at the same time trustworthy and really has your back. My case involved a few businesses, another third party and had stretched over five years with an unbelievable amount of paperwork and court filings. Most lawyers I saw were deterred by the case due to its intricacy, but Angel took over it without a fling and delivered amazingly. Can't recommend him enough.

Fantastic attorney - excellently handles all my legal affairs. Provides multiple routes, analyzes pros and cons of each, and executed a plan of action like a bull dog. Very humble and highly regarded, also speaks to the human element - he always made me feel, no matter how small some of my issues were, like I was his foremost priority. I would highly recommend Mr. Veracruz, and would continue to seek him all of my future endeavors first.

She has an amazing attention to detail and worked hard to ensure all of the various documents were properly filled out (no small task the the sheer volume of docs needed). Issues and questions were solved with easy-to-understand responses in a timely fashion. Ms Matus-Collins clearly is an expert in her field and I felt confident I was being represented by a tenured professional. Very grateful for her help, guidance - and results!

I learned of Bridge Law through a local attorney I have been using for estate planning up here in Oregon. Lalit was quick to provide a free 15 minute consultation to clarify my needs and help me identify the best path forward for our estate planning needs. In this instance, he advised against retaining their services and recommended alternate avenues for me to explore. Would quite happily use them again for my estate planning needs.

I needed to find a great lawyer to represent me in straightening out a mess left by my previous divorce atty 15 years ago. Long story short, I let mt ex keep the house and my equity until my children turned 18. Lo and behold she didn't want to give me my equity 15 years later now that the time had come. My original Atty left me in a gaping hole with the agreement that was originally written and being "not a lawyer" myself I had left the proper verbiage up to him....i mean that's why we hire a lawyer in the first place, right? Suffice it to say that Mr. Ludwig and his wife & team did a great job for me in reaching a satisfactory conclusion and getting me my equity. Thank you Eric and Michelle!

I left my prior attorney after 6 months of often being left alone in an intensely ugly divorce, due to a lack of education of what I was legally expected to do and why or regular communication of the notices from opposing counsel about ex-parte and contempt, etc. I relied more on Google as a resource for my life spinning out of control than the person I hired to protect me. Then I was referred to Eric by a friend who knew I needed someone who was responsive, had the ability to react to the immediate needs while keeping me informed and educated on the situation. My divorce was a multi-year process that involved an ex who had mistresses, lost his job of 28 years, substance abuse and a list of other issues, some known and lots of surprises. Eric was wise on when and how he engaged me for the legal dialogue that occurs between attorneys. It didn't take me long to learn to use my energy on my children, my job that I needed to keep and myself and trust I had a pitbull who was passionate about my well being. Eric would often work weekends and respond after hours when I needed, to hit a deadline or just to hear his assuring words in order to get a night of sleep. He thinks outside of the box and has the best interest of the family unit in mind and until someone goes through this ordeal, its unimaginable to realize how important it is to have someone keeping their eye on the total picture. Eric is well respected by the judges and wastes no time. I never felt like he was over charging or wasteful of my money. The combination of he and his partner / wife is awesome. One plus one makes three at the Ludwig Law Center! They made the worst part of my life managable and ultimately a success for me and my children. I came out of that ordeal a lot more whole than others who I know who've got a divorce and the Ludwig's are responsible for it.

My case was set for trial, and we ended up settling before then and against all odds (I forgot to mention that my ex-wife received a pro-bono lawyer which meant she had zero overhead going to trial and a law incentive to settle as a result). Swati and her team were extremely competent, savvy, knowledgeable and most importantly - honest and caring. I even asked Swati during one of our meetings, a couple of weeks before the commendatory settlement hearing was held, what would her incentive be to settle my case versus going to trial which will result in hundreds of billable hours for her. She explained that what I described isn't rare in the family law industry and that in fact, in some conferences they teach lawyers how to deploy billing strategies like the one I was worried about, but that she is not the person to take advantage of her clients and will always push for the client to spend the lease amount they need on their legal defense. Even after explaining that, I was still skeptical. However, Swati came through with her promise and her and her team pushed to settle my case and got me a great outcome, ended saving me a lot of time and money and made me believe that despite what I largely came across in the field, that even though rare, there are still lawyers that are competent, professional, honest and caring out there. Can't recommend her enough.

If you do decide to use Desai Family Law as your counsel, do NOT have Malori handle any of your documents or case. She is careless with her work and not detailed oriented. I should have known this in the beginning, when she had emailed me requesting my signed retainer agreement. I notified her that the signed agreement was faxed couple days prior, then receive an email stating she had found my signed retainer agreement. This is not a big issue and a simple mistake that is understandable. However, during the negotiations of my case, I had instructed Malori to change my custody schedule to the Settlement Proposal Letter. I, of course, wanted more time with my child and attached a picture of the changes I was requesting. I even told Malori to see the attached picture. Apparently, Malori did not see the attached picture and emailed me the Proposal several times without the changes I requested. I was also billed for the wasted time and work spent because of Malori's negligence. I eventually had to call Malori and tell her which email to open and what needed to be done. If you decide to use Desai Family Law Group, I would NOT recommend using Swati Desai. Any parent going through a custody case, goes through a lot of stress and needs an attorney to help them feel confident. I can honestly say, I did not feel confident having Swati represent me as my counsel, and I had to fire her 1 week prior to my court date. Several months prior to my court date during a phone call, Swati was aggressive with me on the phone and telling me my court date is coming up. I had to remind her that my court date was postponed and rescheduled to a later date by the courts. Her reply, "Hold on. Oh yeah, you're right". Also, during this conversation, Swati had given me incorrect legal advise. I questioned Swati's legal advice, so I emailed Malori if what Swati had said was correct. Malori's email contradicted Swati's legal advise; and in fact, Swati's legal advise was incorrect. During another important phone call, Swati proceeded to put me on hold twice. I was billed for the entire length of the phone call and her pricing is not cheap! One week prior to my court date during a phone call, Swati asked me "wait, when is your court date again"? Also during this phone call, I had asked Swati if she saw my important email from 2 days before. Her response, "What email? Oh yeah, that email. What was that email regarding again"? It was after this phone call, I decided to seek new counsel and fire Swati as my attorney. I understand that most attorneys do not memorize all their clients' court dates, but at least wait until the phone call is over and check your schedule for the court date. Do not ask your client, "wait, when is your court date again". (Take this as constructive criticism). The amount of stress and paranoia I endured having to fire Swati one week prior to my court date, I do not wish upon any parent. Shortly after replacing Swati, I was emailed a ridiculous bill. I tried to call Swati from my work phone to discuss the charges, only to realize that she had blocked that number. If Swati was familiar with my case/file she would have blocked the only number I had put on my contact information (which was my personal phone number). I called her from my personal number and she refused to discuss the charges. For the price they charge, I expected a certain level of professionalism and experience, which was not met. I would not recommend this firm and would suggest looking elsewhere.

Ludwig Law Center was referred to me by friends. Eric was my attorney on the first case I had involving child support. Eric did a phenomenal job in court for me. I felt like I was on a television legal show. I didn't believe lawyers were this good in real life. 2 years later I had a problem with my business associate and I went to Michelle since Eric was busy on another long term case. Michelle was extremely professional and kicked booty in the courtroom too. She won that case for me as well as the one Eric won. I am 2 for 2 with this firm and would highly recommend them to friends and family.

I was very fortunate that my buddy referred me to John H. Smith III, during my custody battle with the EX. There is no way my prior family law attorney could have done what John did for me. The EX made false allegations against me and John handled this extremely stressful situation very professionally and to my extreme satisfaction. I no longer have to deal with this issue because of John. John and his paralegal are excellent, honest and truthful. John is very professional in court as well. He makes sure the facts are heard very skillfully, even when the other side is very hostile. He sticks to the point and does not get caught up in the distractions. He cares about your mental health and makes sure you have the help you need to live a productive life with your children and family. John returns your phone calls in a timely manner and his fees are very fair. I am very grateful for what John has done for me personally and in family court. John H. Smith III is the best family law attorney.

First let me say that I refer my friends, family and anyone who will listen to me to consult John when dealing with a family court matter. Every single person who took my advice has raved that it was a superior choice and thanks me for the referral. EVERYONE!! (Those that haven’t taken my advice have complained about their experiences and found themselves engaged in their divorce to the detriment of their lives). John is a great attorney which should be enough, but he also cares. He cares about you moving your life forward and to not get caught in your litigation. He works hard to ensure you focus on the future. For those that have gone through these situations, you will understand how easy it is for you and others to get sucked into the drama. John will not let that happen. Nor does he participate in that. As so many other lawyers do. During my divorce process John has defended me from a TRO, which was dismissed, multiple custody battles where my ex falsely accused me of abuse, endless litigation where my ex hired and fired 4 attorneys. John ensured I received 50/50 custody of my then 2 and 3 year old boys. (Now 14 and 15, and living with me 100% of the time). John is an excellent litigator, strong advocate, but equally important, John genuinely and sincerely cares about his clients and the kids involved. Because of this he kept me focused on what was important and equally made me aware of what wasn’t. Which is extremely important when entangled in a hostile divorce and custody battle. If you find yourself in a divorce, custody dispute or other family court matter John should be your first stop.

We hired John H. Smith Law and it was a disaster. Every time I spoke with John he was not in touch with our case and he seemed confused and only concerned about money. I would call and leave messages, and it took him days to return my calls. He messed up our case and I had to hire another attorney. Avoid this law office, there are much better law firms in this area.

Let me begin with saying this review is way overdue as I am not one to write reviews. But, Steve is an extraordinary person and attorney and truly fights for what is in the best interest of children. I worked in criminal court and I was in need of a family law attorney as my ex-husband was taking me to court for a modification of child custody and it was very contentious as he was making false allegations against me, and was only trying to get more custody time with our daughter to reduce his child support. My case also involved chid molestation that occurred on dad's custody time by his brother-in-law and there was a pending criminal trial against this individual. In addition to myself being bullied by dad's entire family. This entire situation was extremely stressful. That is when I asked another court employee that had worked in the Family Law Division for a referral. She referred me to Mr. Dragna. That is when I finally felt a sense of relief. I had a hearing pretty quick because Mr. Dragna was on top of it. Let's just say it was so contentious that my case was a total of 3 days in court. Mr. Dragna was always early, prepared and very professional. I felt the odds were against me because the court investigator believed dads lies and manipulation and it appeared that the investigator just did not like me and her report to the court was completely against me. Mr. Dragna subpoenaed her to appear in court and let me tell you Mr. Dragna's questioning just completely tripped her up and exposed her biases to the judge. Not to mention Mr. Dragna's closing argument. It gives me chills to this day and even the judge was repeating statements from his closing arguments which just goes to show how powerful his argument and statements were to the judge. The end result was completely in my favor or I should really say my daughters favor. Dad was denied his request and had to pay for my attorney fees. Steve is not one of the best he is the BEST family law attorney and I could not recommend him enough!.

BEWARE ITS FEB 2021 HE & HIS STAFF DO NOT WEAR A MASK WEARER He endanger the life of me, my son, and his 75-year-old grandmother and 81-year-old grandfather this lawyer is very ignorant and not respectful of other peoples lives Very rude and unprofessional. Charged me for an hour and a half but didn’t see us at all. He strictly has a law degree, he has absolutely no degree in family psychology, child psychology, or even a certificate for child communication skills, yet he wanted to be completely alone with a nine-year-old boy who did not want to be alone with him! And he’s obviously has a lot of problems if he believes that Dr. Phil is a real TV show That addresses real problems in a real manner! He also believes that this video that I’m going to leave the title to in quotations is a truly unscripted video you should Google it yourself and see if you believe that a six-year-old has this type of intellect and knowledge without being prompted or taught by a parent avoid him then “ You Have to Hear This 6-Year-Old's Advice for Her Divorcing Parents” Here’s also the link just to make sure you got the right video https://youtu.be/DITdTSmdB98 If you personally believe this girl is scripted and you still want to see this attorney who believes it’s unscripted I advise you on some caution! Dr. Phil is strictly for entertainment no different than Jenny Jones, or Jerry Springer, it’s designed with intent to entice excite and cause drama it is made for Clickbait and advertising not for real life situations And once again he billed me $1750 for absolutely zero minutes of his time I often find professionals professionals in suits manipulate and lie quite often and are often not as educated as you may presume And after laughing at a lawyer who believes Dr. Phil is a legitimate shell I got to say this guys a quack

We hired Carly for a pretty straight forward divorce, 11 year marriage no children, and like many reviewers before us she was a disgrace! Not only was she incompetent, so was her staff. She had office staff repeatedly requesting documents, forms, signatures all which had been provided multiple times to other staff members. So disorganized! All the while racking up billable hours. When we finally had enough and called her out, we too received a nasty letter demanding we find a new attorney as there is clearly a conflict of interest. She did this, 10 months in and just 10 days away from a crucial court date. She left us high and dry. We luckily found a fantastic attorney to replace her and 2 1/2 years later (we are just now finished with our case) actually witnessed the judge in our case, advise Ms. Croskrey (appearing before the same judge representing a different client) “you may want to stick around, Ms.Croskrey, and see how the actual pros do this!” SLAM!!

Beware of this attorney! She promises the moon and delivers on nothing! Our contract was $3000 for my case. She even crossed out the hourly charges. But due to her failure to file a response to my ex’s suit our case was not continued and she filed a new case. Never once re-discussing the charges. Then COVID hit. Delay after delay then in June we got out day in court via telephone. Come to find out Carly mistakenly forgot to file a proof of service causing the judge to become pissed and yelling at Carly for lying in court. Has she filed the proof my case would have been heard and would have been done. Nope! Carly takes the next 4 months to double my bill only to have my case settled because I found out she was charging hourly and did not adhere to our contract. I couldn’t afford to continue to fight a bogus case. My ex claimed to be on unemployment when in fact he lied and was making over 100k per year. Should have been an open and shut case. But no she couldn’t even win a case that easy. Then when she gave me the final bill it totaled $8000 for nothing! No court! No sanctions! No nothing! All because of massive delays due to her negligence! Then to top it off she sends me a signed letter of the total bill (she said she discounted) with a payment plan only to say 1 week later that she wanted to charge me full price and no payment plan by the end of the year. Luckily I had her signed letter agreeing to the terms. Once I had that she stopped all Communication with me! This lady is the worst and only wants your money. She crumbled like a wet rag in court and failed to do her job not once but twice! Do not hire this attorney

I showed him my mother's will of 486 pages long and he reviewed it and gave some comments. I took the wil back home and left at my house but he felt compelled to rewrite the will for my sister and only in one page he gave everything to my sister. So she inherited $6 million dollars in assets. I tried to call him and he told me not to contact him.

Denis Hebert is different. I have had the opportunity to work with many attorneys over my 45 years of being self employed. At first they seem to have compassion for my case and pledge their support. In the long run I have found that it is all about the money. Denis is compassionate but will always tell you "like it is" even though you may not like it. He never sold me pipe dreams so I could make more realistic decisions. He took the time to do proper research and has exceptional knowledge about real estate. Denis is fair and just.

Attorney Hebert was hired to handle a child custody issue in our divorce case. He was hired under the premise of a limited scope representation for the purpose of a specific child custody hearing that was to take place about a month from the time he took the case. We signed the attorney retainer and paid him for his services that were to be performed. We initially hired him because he had offered us a free initial consultation that actually ended up costing us $500 for him to actually review the documents. He seems very knowledgeable about family law, so we felt secure in the idea that he would represent my matter appropriately. That didn't turn out to be the case. I provided him a copy of the case file and all appropriate documents regarding the issue. He started working on my case and was informing me of updates via e-mail. At first he seemed positive about his ability to resolve the problem and that things would go amicably between the parties. Then at one point I had not received any response to him for about three days. I sent him e-mails asking him for an update and received nothing. Then about three days before the hearing was to take place, he sent me an e-mail indicating that he was substituting off of the case and that he was filing the substitution of attorney with the court that day. I could not believe that any reputable attorney would do such a thing. I tried calling him at his office and there was no answer. I left message after message and did not receive a response. The only thing that I have received from this attorney was the e-mail saying he was substituting off of the case. I have never received anything since then. He just disappeared. He didn't even bother to send me back my case file. He never even bothered to give me an explanation. I have not heard from him since. He actually had the nerve to send me a bill in the mail a couple of weeks after he substituted off of the case. Funny enough, even the commissioner on our case at Orange County Superior Court said that every now and then you run into a "bad seed", as he put it.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
