Josh represented me in a criminal case back in 2021 that I was unfairly accused of some major felonies that could have ended with 85 years behind bars. Through his diligence and expertise he was able to get it plead down to a single misdemeanor with 3 years probation from 3 separate felony charges and 85 years. I highly recommend him for any domestic violence charges. He knows his stuff.

Hands down...she's the BEST. I've used Nancy Jo to represent me for several cases over the past 10 years - ranging from a divorce, child custody and adoption. She was an absolute jewel to have on my side during these difficult times. She fought hard for me and my child - and yes, we came out on top in all of my cases. She is definitely the lawyer you want sitting beside you in the court room! I would use her again and I recommend her often to my friends and family.

Jeremey Poindexter helped us with our case and I could not have asked for a better attorney. We had a situation in which our children were taken by DSS. Our son was placed with my mother but my daughter was a very complicated situation. Jeremey was very detailed with us and how he would handle it and what we should expect. There was a loop whole with how DSS had handled my daughter's situation and Jeremey was very aggressive and professional with her situation. We had gone to court and we were ready to abide by anything to get our children back. We were adviced by Jeremey why we should not accept the terms the court offered. They wanted to put us on the child neglect list and we denied to accept the terms. Jeremey was able to help us meet with DSS right after we got out of court and discuss the situation. They agreed not to have us put on the child neglect registry and we went back to court at that moment and we were able to have custody of our children. If Jeremey was not aggressive in the matter we would of been on the child neglect registry which would of affected us for the rest of our lives. I am greatful and thankful for Jeremey Poindexter advice and how he handled our case in a timely manner. I highly recommend him to any family.

MJ and Joy were responsive and had great attention to details. Very high quality law firm, and it's not worth compromising during this life changing time - speaking from experience as my first lawyer did not do a good job. Definitely get what you pay for. This is for a change in custody for my son.

I absolutely love MJ Goodwin. I filed for custody of my daughter. She was very prompt on any issues or questions I may have had. Very personal woman with high spirit. She helped me with some very difficult situations and was always available in a respectful time frame. If you are needing someone that you can rely on that will fight for you pls consider her as your lawyer. She also offered real solutions for my problems and did not sugar coat anything. If needed I will definitely use her again. Thank you Goodwin!!

Todd Pruette was a blessing for me during the hardest time in my life. I was going through a domestic violence situation and adultery and I felt like I was in danger. He provided me the best legal advice and supported me. He guided me, gave me courage, and motivation to stay strong during my divorce because I was dealing with depression, anxiety, and much more. Not only was he able to represent me in a professional and competent way, but his calm and empathetic demeanor offered emotional support to myself. He makes you feel safe and not alone. He makes smart decisions and finds the most effective ways to help you. I'm eternally grateful for his services and I hereby recommend Mr. Pruette without reservations.

Mr. Pruette provided excellent representation for me during a recent separation and divorce. Being married for over 30 years, I had no idea what to expect and how to go about the legal matters that ensued. He was excellent at calming my fears, knowing what issues were urgent, and what could wait. I would definitely recommend him.

Greg seems nice, but he will be the first to tell you he is inexperienced, and it shows. He made many large errors in my case which would have cost me custody and home. Your children, property, and sanity are too important to gamble with. Look further.

David has stuck with me for almost 3 years through the back and forth between me and my ex. My ex files first and it was thrown out after a year and then David filed again for me. Everything was finalized today and I was able to get sole custody of my children. David also gave me great advice and tips for when I graduate from school (something he definitely did not have to do). I am grateful for Davids help.

recently had the unfortunate experience of encountering a lawyer who not only displayed shocking unprofessionalism but also revealed deeply ingrained prejudices. My interaction with Sarah, presumably a legal professional, left me baffled and appalled. Upon answering the phone, Sarah greeted me with the condescending question, "Who u trying to sue?" It was immediately clear that she had made baseless assumptions about me, possibly based on my name or some other superficial factor. When I sought clarification, she repeated her disrespectful remark, indicating a lack of respect for basic communication etiquette. What followed was equally disturbing. Sarah proceeded to quote an exorbitant retainer fee of $10,000 without even bothering to listen to my side of the story. Her preemptive assertion that I was going to lose my case reeked of arrogance and negligence. It became evident that she had already made up her mind about me before even understanding the details of the situation. This encounter serves as a stark reminder of the pitfalls of the legal profession. Lawyers, like Sarah, seem to prioritize profit over principles, demonstrating a worrying lack of empathy and integrity. Their loyalty appears to lie not with justice or their clients but with their own financial interests and their colleagues in the legal fraternity. The erosion of faith in the judicial system is a troubling consequence of such behavior. When legal practitioners like Sarah prioritize money and assumptions over fairness and due process, the very foundation of justice is undermined. It reinforces the perception that the legal system is rigged in favor of the wealthy and well-connected, leaving ordinary individuals at a severe disadvantage. In conclusion, my encounter with Sarah serves as a cautionary tale for anyone seeking legal representation. Beware of lawyers who are quick to judge, prioritize profit over justice, and demonstrate blatant unprofessionalism. The pursuit of justice should not be tainted by prejudice, greed, or arrogance. It's time for the legal profession to introspect and uphold the principles it claims to stand for.

I recently had to use Mr Welborn for a case and his manners are terrible and so his his secretary's. He will tell you he can gurantee he can get you off and its no problem. He doesn't know how to keep in contact with you and updated on your case. After a month went by without hearing from him I had to call him and ask for an update from his secretary and then it was late the next day before he called me back. He talks down to you and makes you feel like how you feel is stupid. I had a lot riding on this case and I felt he was ill prepared for it throughout the whole case. Then he didn't even show up for my court date. I called to ask what was going on and his secretary rudely stated that she had tried to call but couldn't get an answer on a Friday at 4:30 after I talked to her a 3:30 with no mention about no having to show up. When asked if she called the number given to call if no answer she stated she had not called it. Then she had ample amount of time to call the morning of the hearing and did not. The day of the trial the Judge and Solicitors office wanted to know why he didn't show up and that I had to represent myself. I received a rude letter needing my information after I had given it to him on several different occasions on how to reach me after he wasn't able to contact me on one occasion. It seemed like he just wasnt concerned about my case what so ever. He acted as if he was the greatest lawyer ever if he did anything concerning my case. I wanted a jury trial and he never pushed it.

this attorney should be disbarred. I have a court date in 10 days I can't get this guy on the phone. I have gone to his office in person, while he was there, yet I could not get him to speak with me at all. I have already paid this guy $10,000 he will not speak to me. I have had to go to the solicitor's office myself after I filed my own motions for discovery. the solicitor told me that eakes is my attorney and they can not speak to me about the case without him being present, but I can't get eakes to do anything he avoids me and I am terrified of court so do not hire this guy unless you want to be left on your own up spits creek without a paddle

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
