JoAnna J. Smith, who is a Family Law Attorney, Mediator, and Guardian Ad Litem, who works for this firm, was our mediator during the divorce proceedings in June 2024. I did not want to review the law firm itself, just the individual, Ms. JoAnna J. Smith, but, I did not see an option in Google review to add a review just for this individual, thus, I will apologize in advance.
In the Mediation agreement both parties signed, and what I have been informed in regard to the responsibilities of a mediator, they are supposed to be unbiased. Which means, what was said and volunteered by the other party, should not have had any effect or influence during the process, nor should JoAnna have tried to persuade myself and my attorney to make decisions that was not best for myself. I also volunteered information as to what I have been through prior to the divorce and what was taken from me, emotionally and financially, etc, but JoAnna was still prejudicial against me.
It was very clear to myself and even my attorney agreed by making a statement, "after all my years as an attorney, I've never heard a mediator being blatantly biased," which JoAnna seemed very vocal in siding with the 'Respondent,' as I was the 'Petitioner.' During this time, my attorney should have asked her to recuse herself from this mediation and ask for another mediator, which I would have been willing to pay extra money if we needed another mediator, but, that was not the case.
In the Mediation agreement, the mediator is not supposed to 'give any legal advise,' she verbally stated to the Petitioner that it was not a good option for the Respondent to either re-fi the house, nor sell the house, nor Heloc a loan and stated the Respondent does not have the funds and should not proceed with anyone of these options. As the Petitioner, I was not asking a lot of money, but, that did not seem to matter with JoAnna. JoAnna explained the process of Heloc a loan, and we wanted to pursue other avenues, but she was sounding like the Respondent's lawyer.
Yes, I agree my attorney should have strongly voiced other avenues to benefit myself, but, since he heard how blatantly the mediator was biased, he should have also asked her to recuse herself from this mediation. Divorce is hard enough, and having professional people that are supposed to be unbiased, was tougher for me through the divorce proceedings and I felt like JoAnna didn't care what I had been through, and she showed it by vocalizing her opinion and her 'legal advise.'

Sandy Burney is completely incompetent, lazy, dismissive, unprofessional and rude.
I was so embarrassed in court because the judge admonished her for not filing a motion to compel my ex to provide his financials which I had repeatedly emailed her to do beforehand, and for letting the proceedings drag out for 4 years!!!
She had no strategy, and kept me in the dark about everything. You can’t reach her and she is defensive when you ask questions or for clarification. She wouldn’t answer one question…ever! She was late to court. She didn’t even have my parenting plan prepared for the hearing (after 4 years which takes no more than an hour to do).
It was pathetic because the judge just ignored her the rest of the hearing. He wouldn’t even acknowledge her. She lost me the ability to recover over $150k in child support and past due expenditures. She’s so ignorant that she kept calling past due expenditures, arrears. I had to correct her so she wouldn’t look like an idiot at the final hearing. However, it didn’t matter, she still managed to do that anyway.
You would do a better job representing yourself. You will highly regret trusting her with your case. She does more damage than good. I don’t even understand why the bar continues to let her practice law.

Sandy Burney is the worst attorney I have ever encountered, she never meets deadlines on time, she never answers her office phone, she doesn't give out her cell phone, she returns your calls with a email, and a bad attitude. I had her working on my case that was way over her skill set. She failed to inform me of my options and rights to help my case. She never properly prepared me for the case. I'm actually in the process of filing a complaint to the Bar Association! I have a new found passion in my life, for warning people not to use this ill qualified excuse of a lawyer.

I hired Ms. Burney for Child Legitimation. While working with her through a somewhat challenging process, she made me feel very comfortable and put my mind at ease.
Ms. Burney knows her facts and was able to articulate all legal entities to me professionally and on a level I was able to comprehend.
In addition, Ms. Burney was very supportive and made the court proceedings less intimidating and "stiff".

I've never had a lawyer before and I was so happy to have met Kathy (and her assistant Judi). I'd heard so many bad things about lawyers that I really didn't know what to expect. She was wonderful. Anyone who says you don't need a lawyer on your side is foolish, they are there for your best interest, even if you're not sure what it might be exactly. Balean and Kristy kept me sane during the hardest year of my life and I am forever grateful.
I was too nervous to reach out to a divorce lawyer even though it was well past time, so a friend of mine who is a lawyer in another area talked me into it and recommended these two personally. I can't say enough good things so I'll try and break it down into the things that are/were important to me in a divorce.
They are NOT pushy. I was so nervous the first call, I did not want to get a divorce. I even (politely) told them I hope we don't ever need to talk again. They were extremely supportive. Not one single time did either of them push me towards a divorce. They answered all my questions honestly and thoughtfully and I never felt rushed.
On the flip side of that, they are also very cognizant that their time is expensive. So for me, it is very hard to find a lawyer who is constantly aware of running up your tab, but personable enough to trust them and not feel like just another check in the spreadsheet. On top of that, I have ADHD so I can get off on a tangent with the best of them. Both Kristy and Balean we're very good at redirecting me into the areas that mattered and pushing me though the areas that didn't without letting me get hung up on them.
They are extremely prompt (during business hours, I cant speak to otherwise because I don't expect people to work 24/7), I don't think I ever waited a full day for a reply. You WILL feel like a priority. Which frankly with how being a lawyer works, is pretty remarkable.
They know their stuff. I don't know a better way to put that. And if they don't know, they make it a priority to find out. I had a few odd snafus with property issues and a few (lets say less than reasonable) demands from my now ex, and if I had a question they tracked it down if they weren't already sure.
They are generally fun and calming presences. Mediation went for a full day, so Balean was trapped in a room with me for probably 12 straight hours. And if you aren't aware (i certainly wasn't), mediation is very much hurry up and wait. When we had the mediator, it was 100% business. When she was in the other room, we walked through everything we needed to discuss, got advice, and then were able to relax and recharge a bit before the next turn. As you can imagine, its an emotional time. I went from needing to pace the hallways angry to bouncing off the walls bored to everything in between and not once did Balean get even slightly irritated with me. They are VERY aware that you're going though something and that while we need to be efficient there also needs to be room for you to be a person with feelings and needs.
So if you don't read all of that, the important bits are they are going to make you a priority and you'll feel like it, they will not run up your bill for no reason and will be honest when they think something may do so, they give you grace to be going though something hard, while also getting you though it in a prompt and efficient and competent manner. I absolutely would not even consider another legal team if these guys are available. I can't speak highly enough of this firm.

Family law is messy, emotional and the stakes are high. My divorce was fairly atypical. Steven and I were living in different time zones and there were many unique issues and difficulties to be addressed. Thanks to Steven’s intelligence, efficiency, effectiveness and pragmatic approach I was divorced with excellent results and settlement in less than four months. He has changed my whole outlook on lawyers. Steven is a man that listens without prejudice or judgments. He is a superb attorney that offers sound advice with his client’s best interest in mind, and does not loose sight of what is at stake. He provided productive, timely reviews of preliminary drafts ensuring that my case was handled in a sensitive, appropriate manner and he seemed to always make the best choice as to when to be flexible and when to be firm. Steve represents hall of fame athletes, but he never treated my case as less important than those of his famous clients. He is knowledgeable and strategic -- right away, he assessed the facts of my case, he worked with me to develop a case strategy, and then he executed upon it with precision and efficiency. While not inexpensive, Steve's fees were reasonable for the high quality and meaningful work that was performed. In addition to legal skill, I really like Steve. He's tough, but also a good person. He truly listened to me, was sensitive to my concerns, I always felt comfortable discussing personal matters with him, and I never doubted for one minute that he wasn't fully committed to and capable of reaching the best possible outcome for me (which he did).

Horrible experience with this attorney! Constantly cancelling appointments, wanting to meet up at my home rather than his office, and never gave us a copy of any of my husbands immigration paperwork and everything we signed. Had to request payment receipts multiple times and he wanted to be paid cash. Serial texting me rants back to back after he changes the fee schedule at 6am. What attorney does this? I had to actually threaten him with harassment and block him. Not sure if he has a bad habit or not. I will be filing a complaint with the state of Georgia and Louisiana. I’ve given him more than enough time to correct what he did. I have kept screenshot proof of all inappropriate communication from him.

Jon Hedgepeth took my divorce, my children and me under his wing and helped save us from the mess that another firm had created. I thought that the law is the law, so it didn't matter which attorney I used. I was wrong. In trying to save money using another attorney, it almost cost me my home, cars, business and custody.
Jon cleaned up the mess and then went to work expediting the divorce that had gone on for way too long. When my divorce went to trial, it was as if I was watching a master mind at work. He picked up on every single inconsistency from my ex-husband, including little things my ex said that were helpful to my case and little things he did that would favor my case. And, Jon pulled it all together at my trial showing the judge the truth. Jon was brilliant.
The judge awarded me everything I asked for as well as a few things that I didn't ask for in the divorce.
I'm so grateful to Jon and his team. I was scared and intimidated by my ex husband as well as the process but Jon took care of me and took the burden off of me so I could focus on running my business and being a mom.
Not all attorneys are created equal and it does make a difference who represents you in a divorce. I have recommended him to other friends who have been thrilled with his representation as well.

Jon knows what he is doing without a doubt. He helped me with a long over due divorce involving custody issues.
