My parents divorce case has been going on for years. Ava has not acted professionally with emails or phone calls. As the child involved in this case, divorce is heartbreaking situation for everyone involved, ESPECIALLY when one parent is mentally ill and more communication is needed in order to legally end things. She has the ability to file a motion to help my mother and has not. I would love to change this review when my parents’ divorce is finally over after this 5 year long battle.

Definitely one of the worst lawyers I ever came across! She lies! She don’t answer any of your calls or emails. Some people just don’t care and she is one of them . I suppose to been had my kids if my lawyer was doing they job. It’s sick and heartbreaking when she called and said my kids was released to me and still nothing happened. I called cps and they said my lawyer knows what to do and she still has not got the ball rolling. It’s ridiculous!

I have used Attorney Reginald Asiedu to successfully handle several legal problems in the past 10 years. When I initially hired him in 2008, I paid him $1500 for a divorce case. My marriage of many years was falling apart and I was devastated. Attorney Reginald Asiedu was very nice and caring. He gave me support and hope. He made me believe again. He and his staff always returned my calls, answered my questions and attended to my concerns promptly and courteously. He was always well prepared, knowledgeable and aggressive in fighting for me. Through his hard work and expertise, I won substantial assets in my divorce case, including the house my ex-husband and I owned together. He is always well dressed and very professional. His fees are also very reasonable. I feel lucky and proud to call Attorney Reginald Asiedu my lawyer. Over the years, I have referred my family and friends to Attorney Reginald Asiedu, They have all been very happy with his services and said only nice things about him. I thank you attorney Reginald Asiedu on behalf of myself, my family and my friends.

During the consultation he was nice and knowledgeable I paid him his fee and we proceeded from there. However, once he received his 1500$ he was no longer that nice and knowledgeable it's as if he was busy and running on 2 hours of sleep. So one day his secretary called me and informed me that my soon to be ex-husband was not served and had relocated I asked his secretary where is the paperwork at? She was unable to answer the question so Reginald some how got on the phone and I asked him the same thing. He responded what are you talking about so I had to get more specific is the paperwork with you or is it still with the sheriff. Reginald answered it's in Pennsylvania. 2nd incident I called to check if the paperwork was delivered to my soon to be ex-husband and his secretary replied I told you it was but you didn't seem to understand me.I replied, okay, I don't do the back and forth and I don't mean to be a female dog about things but I need to understand if he was already served or not. Being that the question was not able to be answered by phone I had to go there personally to get things straight. I got there Reginald claimed I cursed his secretary out and I was acting like a person from the street and went as far to say that the $1500 I spent is nothing and he has people paying him 15k and 20k to retain him. He's the type of person that once he gets his money don't ask him questions or follow up on your case and that to me is bad business . Also, if you are not spending 15k or better your money is not worth much so you will not get the same respect or feedback that a person spending that amount would .

My case was a tough case. When many saw challenges and impossibilities and said no, this lawyer saw possibilities and solutions and said yes. There were many road blocks and stop signs along the way, but this lawyer persevered and found a way to get to the next destination. He never gave up and he gave me wonderful support and hope every step of the way. Through his wisdom, skill, knowledge and experience, I received a good sum of money from my ex. This lawyer turned a tough case into a very positive outcome. Thank you lawyer Reggie Asiedu. My decision to hire you was one of the best decisions I ever made.

She is a mediocre unprofessional lawyer, you have to pay in advance for the consultation and then she does not answer your calls or messages, she does not help. It’s a waste of time, she has a bad attitude. I do not recommend her. Es una abogada mediocre poco profesional, hay que hacer pago por adelantado para la consulta y después no te contesta ni te responde las llamadas ni los mensajes, no ayuda. In New York it's hard for a father to get a fair shake when it comes to custody of their children. Eskin & Eskin were able to get me full custody of my son. Great people first and foremost which makes them very understanding and helpful during what is probably a very rough patch in a person's life. They helped me get my life back when I didn't think it was possible. If you need a divorce and custody is an issue do yourself a favor and call Eskin & Eskin.

Just wondering where did all the negative reviews go? 42 years and only three reviews? I remember reading quite a few of them a yr or 2 ago, so does AVVO delete them. Unless you are dominican or white he is of no use to you so hire at your own risk. It also helps that the judge he usually stands before is dominican so there's that too.

Hired him for a divorce in 2021, it’s 2024. Months turned into Years of trying to call, email, and request my money back. I’ve never experienced this kind of behavior/treatment from an attorney, you hire lawyers when you need help and trust they’ll do their job. I live in another state as well so it’s quite impossible to know what my next steps to circumvent finalizing my divorce another way is. Nelson promised to take care of me. I had a family case which was dragged out in court for 18(!!!!) years , when I hired Mr. De La Cruz it was my lucky day! This lawyer is no joke. Very aggressive, yet professional. He was always on time, constantly in touch with me, I never had to leave more than one message, and he called me right back in a matter of few hours at most. He prepared me before each court appearance, listened all my concerns and dilemmas and give sharp, professional options or suggestions. I’m extremely happy that this “never ending “ case is finally over, and we won it after so many years! Of course the other side tried everything to drag it out even longer, but I had such an incredible “pit bull”, it’s literally what the other side called him, so they just settled. I’m very satisfied with Mr. De La Cruz’s services and absolutely can recommend him . He just the guy you need!

I’ll be totally honest with you guys I’ve never met a lawyer, that actually fought for his client as if it was his family member, or better yet as if he was fighting for his own freedom . This man is nothing short of amazing at his job & he definitely knows the law inside out . I wouldent recommend putting my money in anyone’s hands if it’s not Nelson de La Cruz . Not to mention he’s affordable & willing to work with you . At the time I first retained him I was incarcerated in federal jail on charges of racketeering conspiracy & extortion conspiracy held without bond . Within 30 days of Nelson bein my lawyer he was able to secure me a bail & get me back home to my family . Throughout the duration of the case Nelson’s communication with both me and my loved ones was always priority and we loved that about him . His knowledge and his delivery with what he brings to the table as an attorney makes him that much more valuable to you as his client & of course to your case furthermore, securing the BEST possible outcome . In conclusion with my criminal history bein very extensive & other factors ( such as evidence against me ) I did ultimately decide to pled guilty. But the fight did not stop there with Nelson . Through motions filed & countless hearings he was able to secure me a beyond favorable plea deal . I was facing a maximum of 40 years in prison, I ended up with a 2 year prison sentence & NO restitution ! I really can’t stop thanking Nelson De La Cruz I strongly recommend him to anyone fighting a criminal case .

Michael Dailey was my appointed attorney for 24 hours. He is the most unprofessional "white-collar" individual I have ever encountered in my life. The FIRST red flag was failure to contact me once assigned in a very time sensitive case. The SECOND red flag was when he did finally contact me, he told me he already spoke to opposing counsel and attorney for the child before getting back to me. I would think it would be prominent to speak to your client before anyone else, but I guess that's not the case here. THIRDLY, our 36 minute conversation was as if I was speaking to opposing counsel in a court room, instead of actually listening to his client of the history, which I found completely offensive since he entered into a 4 year case and based his thoughts on the most recent (exaggerated and fabricated) petition from opposing counsel. Then, he proceeds to tell me "to look him up" and he's a retired lieutenant after he fails to know the difference between harassment and assault in the third degree, and after he admits not knowing CPLR 321C. FOURTHLY, after I tell him via email I no longer need his services and wished him a happy new year, he forwards my email thread to the court, opposing counsel, and attorney for the child, completing violating attorney-client privileged information, Rule 1.6 in ABA, an Ethical Code that attorneys are to obey. A lawyer claiming 35 years of experience should be fully aware of basic ethical codes. The one positive that gave him one star? His behavior and this experience has made me realize if this guy's a lawyer, I can become one too. LSAT here I come.

Michael Dailey was our attorney for a custody case. He was proactive in fighting for our case. He is not, however, a "yes" man. He gave us straight advice, all the time. Mike explained legal tems and procedures in a way that was clear to my wife and I. I feel that Mike genuinely cared for us and for the outcome of our case. The sheriff came to serve us at 9PM for family court. It was a restless night for all of us. I started googling at 6AM the next day, as you can imagine, all the lawyer’s officers are closed even the ones that states they are open 24/7. Most of the lawyer offices in my area open at 9AM, I noted that the Law Office of Nick M. Frisco open at 8AM. I held back until 8:02AM, it rings and rings and bang, Fatima, the paralegal answer. I explained we needed advice and counsel to navigate thru the court’s virtual world with this return of process emergency summons. Within, 20 minutes, Fatima put us in contact with Nick Frisco. We explained the situations and the expected outcome we were asking to get. He told us to provide a summary, get school records, medical records, letters from the teacher, etc. and accepted our case. Nick explained that we need to leave our emotion out, only speak when spoke to and maintenance a positive attitude. The hearing was the next day. During the hearing, Nick discussed the facts and merits of the case and the best interest of the children. The children mother kept changing her story about our arrangements. The judge reminded the children mothers about lying under oath. Sorry for the long write-up but I wanted to explain our situations, the quick turn around and the sense of urgency. I would strongly recommend the Law Office of Nick M Frisco for family court. In order has been issues so the children mothers will need to follow the courts order. Nick and Fatima are a great team and may a big difference on the outcome of our court.

In the beginning of my custody case Mr. Frisco was asking me questions (and making statements) that made me wonder who's side he was on. For many months during the case, his communication in email and verbal was usually combative and condescending, and every time I spoke with him he tried to convince me to settle for what my petitioner was offering, and had no regard for how little time that would allow me to spend with my child. On the last day of the case, minutes before trial started, he argued with me and yelled at me in front of people in the waiting area- pulled a guilt trip on me for not agreeing to what was being offered, which I gave in to, and turned out to be one of the biggest mistakes of my life. Do NOT hire Nick Frisco, and if he is appointed by the Court, I strongly recommend that you request a different attorney.

If I had the choice, I would NOT give this lawyer any stars. I don't know how this woman got a law license. She's a total slimeball. She didn't return my phone calls or calls to my husband's lawyer regarding my case. This would have been nice so my divorce could have been settled faster if she'd done ANY work. She never seemed to know what was going on with my case. She missed important deadlines from what I understood of what happened when we were in Court. I never recommended her to anyone after my fiasco of a divorce. I'm not sure how she got appointed to a position in government. I have no faith in her or our legal system.

If you are man, looking to be represented for a divorce, then DO NOT, repeat DO NOT go to this lawyer. Thanks to him, I am paying thousands of dollars a month in child support. He had absolutely nothing of value to add to the divorce. In fact, the only good things that were entered into the divorce settlement came by way of my idea. Despite my ex being a horrible mother, and a totally irresponsible drunk, this lawyer basically said I had no chance in winning because I was a man. Perhaps worse than him, was me though, for not firing him on the spot. But since he already had my retainer, and as poor as I was, there was not enough money to go out and seek alternative counsel. He was a terrible representative to me. I would not even recommend him to fight a parking ticket. Now, and thanks to him, I have to live poor for several years now.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
