We just completed updating our trust documents with Leslie, and we are so happy we chose her to complete this task. We had a complicated and emotionally charged need to change our trusts. Leslie handled this job with kindness and sensitivity. She tackled the complicated nature of our situation with creativity, ingenuity, and enthusiasm which was essential to complete this job. We were so impressed with her ability to find solutions for a difficult legal dilemma. We are incredibly grateful for Leslie’s professionalism in helping us update our trusts. And to top it off, she is a lovely and engaging person and actually made this an enjoyable process. We wholeheartedly recommend Leslie for any estate/trust needs, whether simple or complicated. She is simply fantastic!

I Yogesh Sharma client of Ms . Deborah Kim was received an exceptionally services. My divorce case was made so complicated by another party attorney n keep on delaying without any reason for their personal beliefs. She helped a lot by charging me reasonable fees for important things only according to my financial situation. I really appreciate Ms Deborah Kim & her staff for all valuable services. My divorced was handled personally by Ms. Kim not an associate or law clerk like at my last law firm. My case was given great care and attention to. It was the most stressful period of my life and the final result was better than what I had been told to expect by my previous attorney. My spouse was not ready to be "fair" until I hired Ms. Kim to represent me in Court. I am happy with the outcome of my case.

Things would not have turned out the way they did, without her effort and her fierceness to make all of the right moves at the right time. Thank you, for your patience and understanding with me during such a difficult time. You are a Super Attorney. I will always be grateful.

A few months back my ex and I got into an argument and before I knew it she had called the police. I ended up in jail and was arrested for domestic abuse, assault and battery. I know that it's a cliche but I never touched her and was only defending myself! A friend of mine told me about Lipton Law Offices and I asked him to contact Mr. Lipton on my behalf. Within hours his bail bondsman had bailed me out of jail. After I was released, I immediately met with Mr. Lipton and was totally impressed. He was enthusiastic and tenacious in handling my case and always kept me in the loop. His persistent arguments to the District Attorney led to the dismissal of my case. I would not be a free man without Mr. Lipton. This man saved my life!

The charge against me was a misdemeanor hit and run. I was very nervous and fearful, because I have never been in trouble with the law. I knew right away that I had to find a knowledgeable attorney who truly cared about representing me to the best of their ability. I interviewed multiple lawyer's and found that most of them were all talk and no action. After interviewing Mr. Lipton and reviewing my case together, i was immediately relieved. He explained, in detail, what every section of the police report meant in a clear and concise manner. He was prompt and kept me informed on a constant basis. He also comforted me and made me feel at ease. I felt like a human being, not a criminal like other attorney's made me feel. The District Attorney handling this matter was very reluctant to reduce the charge, but with Mr. Lipton's diligence and investigative skills he was able to pin point many areas in which sufficient evidence lacked. He displayed extensive legal knowledge and negotiating skills. Because of Mr. Lipton's dedication, experience, and professionalism, the D.A. to reduced my charge to an infraction.

It is my distinct pleasure to highly recommend Janet Miller to any person wanting to establish a Special Needs Trust. Janet Miller is extremely professional in her client interactions and she is also very knowledgable and caring throughout the complex process. She understands the importance and sensitivity of what the client is trying to achieve. Janet was very patient with the 'numerous' questions I found myself wanting explained in detail, often again and again. When dealing with something as personal as this type of Trust you want someone who exhibits all the attributes that I have experienced while working with Janet Miller. In my own profession I have worked with numerous attorneys. I have regarded several as being very good in their area of expertise. It is my evaluation that Janet Miller is at the 'top of the list' in the area of Special Needs Trusts.

I have an adult deaf and special needs daughter. When I got divorced when she was 6, it was determined in our agreement that her father would continue with support payments even after she turned 18. Unfortunately, he did not honor our agreement. Janet was able to not only make him realize and hold true to his moral and financial obligation but was successful in getting back pay as well (without having to go to court). Additionally, she was always very responsive to my calls/emails.

Janet was fantastic to work with. She expertly guided us in setting up a special needs trust to support my mom's unique medical and legal situation. Janet took the time to understand our issue and provided a clear solution and worked quickly to do so. She explained our legal options in language we could understand and liaised with other attorneys to expedite the process. She was extremely responsive and easy to connect with. I would work with her again in a heartbeat. Thank you Janet!

I say this because despite the distance and time difference, I currently live here in the Philippines, we were able to communicate well. Zoom meetings were arrange so that it would both fit into our schedule. She would definitely reply to questions and clarification thru email. It was nerve-wracking for me to go through the divorce process. I was having difficulty accepting and understanding why this happened but found calm with the help of Chelsea. Her thoughtfulness and sensitivity to my needs made me feel at ease and cope with what's in front of me, my daughter's emotional well being and what financial support was required for her and her mother. I followed and finished the recommended courses which expanded my understanding of my new life as a responsible father in a single parent household. Thank you for all you have done for me.

My parents created their trust with Vanguard several years ago. My father recently passed away and when my mother contacted them to find out how much it would be to amend the trust, she was quoted an outrageous price. I'm sure they will respond that they provide a litany of services in conjunction with the trust amendment but when I reviewed those services, most were either already completed by our funeral home or so simple that we can complete them in just a few minutes. Nothing would justify the inflated price we were quoted. I reached out to three other firms and the price Vanguard quoted to amend and provide services was more than triple that of creating a brand-new trust from scratch! Triple. Let's hope that they are simply overcharging for these services and not actively trying to take advantage of a senior citizen. Either way, we are not going to work with Vanguard again and I wouldn't recommend them to anyone else.

I went to the workshop offered in my area (North Sacramento, Roseville). A two hour workshop explained everything I needed to know about getting a Trust to prevent probate. The documents came very fast and were finalized. A notary came to my home and I signed everything, later the documents were sent to me in a black binder. Easy Peasy and for a great cost compared to other law firms. Thank You Vanguard Legal Group.

Horrible mismanagement of my family’s Trust for years. One that she wrote herself, amended multiple times, and even went to my grandfather on his deathbed to have him sign an amendment when he was not in a clear state of mind. When asked for an accounting, she stalled for 9 months and then all of a sudden, no longer represents the Trust or Trustee. This woman should have her bar revoked. She will steal your family’s money and do zero work that benefits anybody but herself.

Kathy Campbell is passionate about families. She stood by my side through a very long and contentious divorce; constantly trying to elevate the ordeal to civil. I felt stunned and wounded at every turn. Kathy was my shield, the best defender. She prepared me as best as she could for court proceedings and helped me understand the law. Kathy consistently and naturally conducts herself with respect and a high moral code. She always treated me as a priority and showed concern about my wellbeing and the wellbeing of my children. I hired Nancy to represent me in divorce and child custody case. Nancy spent an enormous amount of time discussing with opposing counsel and later directly with my x unsignificant events that took place 10 years back. Nancy lost documets I gave her. My fault I didn't make copies. She did not keep any records of all the background information I gave her on the case, and kept asking me to retell her details of things she should have had records of and I has already told her multipletimes verbally. And via emais. When I'd point it out to her, she'd state that it will take her a very long time to go through her records to find relevant information and it's best I retell her, charging me hefty amounts of money for her time. She did that allot, asking same questions she had already asked. It really felt like she was working against me, not for me. She then would mix up information she sent to another party, confusing and complicating things further. She was absolutely no help in child custody. When my x offered Nancy to meet and discuss settlement, Nancy failed to notify me. I learned that directly from my x. She insisted that trial is imminent and she has to "prepare for every possible scenario." When I wanted a settlement and not to deal with the trial. Once I told her that I am not willing to pay her for "what if" and prefer she addresses issues one step at the time, she suggested I find another attorney. Once she figured out I will not be fooled, and she will not be able to keep charging me, she pretty much refused to do her job, dropping me like a hot potato. I wasted allot of hard earned and borrowed money and time, and got nowhere. She mostly stayed mum in the courtroom as well. So if you are dealing with a difficult spouse and a complicated child custody, Nancy is not the right lawyer for you.

Hi, My name is Lynda. I wanted to respond to a recent review regarding attorney Nancy Roberts, Esq. In "that review" it said: that Ms. Roberts was "hard to reach"...that she "weakly negotiated or argued" for her clients...that she "failed to file important documents"... and a number of other such accusations. This "review" appalled and sickened me, because it's so far from the truth, it's ridiculous. This is not at all who Ms. Roberts is, or of what one can expect from Ms. Roberts if they should hire her. I am a paralegal and worked many years as a paralegal for family law attorneys in Santa Clara County. I also personally know many other paralegals who work for family law attorneys in Santa Clara county, so I have also had much feedback regarding not only the attorneys they worked for, but also attorneys they have dealt with. After many years of personally dealing with attorneys (and the feedback from other paralegals regarding their experiences with attorneys they worked for and dealt with) I personally know which attorneys are dependable and which are not; which attorneys are ethical and which are not; which attorneys are truly in the business to help their clients and which attorneys are simply out to make a buck. That is why of all the family law attorneys in Santa Clara County, I chose Ms. Roberts to handle my own divorce case. I knew I could trust her. I knew that no other attorney would give such personal attention to my case (not just because she had a duty to do so, but because she truly cares about her clients). I knew she would be fair with me in regards to her attorney fees; that she would look out for my interests (not just because I hired her to do so, but because that she truly cares about her clients); that she would stand strong for me; that she was a good negotiator; and that she could argue my issues better than any other attorney could or would. I knew that she would always keep me informed regarding all issues in my divorce; that she would never fail to prepare and file any and all documents in my case in a timely manner; and that she would always provide me with copies of each and every document in my case (whether it was a pleading filed with the court or a letter sent on my behalf to the opposing counsel/party). I knew that she would always answer or return my telephone calls, e-mails, and/or texts as soon as possible. Ms. Robert upholds the highest standards with regards to her principals and ethics and morals -- and no one could ever influence her to stray from what she knows is the right thing to do; whether the persuasion comes from the opposing counsel/party, or whether it comes from her own client. Ms. Roberts has gained a reputation among the attorneys, paralegals, and "yes" even the judges in Santa Clara County, as one of the best family law attorneys currently in practice. Anyone who is fortunate enough to retain Ms. Roberts as their attorney can remain assured that they have hired one of the best attorneys available in Santa Clara County.

A few years ago I was in the middle of a very messy and complicated divorce/custody case. Out of several lawyers choose Mrs. Roberts and never regretted it. All of my questions were answered, all court procedures explained, all process guided. Outstanding knowledge of all possible details, no-nonsence approach, emotional support a domestic violence survivor truly needed... Am I happy with an outcome - yes. Did I send a few friends there - yes. Were they satisfied - yes. Would I come back - sure. Can I recommend Mrs. Roberts - yes, definitely. Am I sure she did everything to the highest standard - absolutely.

I would love to mark yes in that question box but I think her partner and his old fart ways hold her back from being a kick ass woman's advocate in our local court rulings. I worked with the firm in 2004-5 and recent findings confirm if we had been able to execute her plan instead of the jerk that she works withes plan we would have found Pandora box of illegal actions that Michelle suspected the opposing party was involved with. Other than the old fart I think Michelle and Irene rock.

Working with the law office of Cecelia Soboleski has been one of the best decisions I have ever made since my divorce process started. I say this because despite the distance and time difference, I currently live here in the Philippines, we were able to communicate well. She manage to discuss the plans and educate me about the case thru zoom meetings and email. She gives you insight but she let’s you decide on everything. Zoom meetings were arrange so that it would both fit into our schedule. She would definitely reply to questions and clarification thru email. Overall, Cecelia is efficient and truly an expert in her field of practice. Thank you cecelia

What this attorney is good about is trying to extract as much money from the other side without any regard to ethics. She is not particularly good at that either. Between my ex and I we spend 10s of thousands of dollars because of this attorney's suggestions which unnecessarily complicated matters. This money could have gone towards our children's needs for help and support during very difficult times. Instead, the money went into the attorneys` pockets. There is a lot to be said about how divorces are handled in the US with all the greed of everyone involved in this disgusting industry. Attorneys like this should be taken their licenses away because they pretend to protect their clients when in reality they are motivated by one thing only - money.

Pro's: easy to talk to, explained concepts well Con's: disappeared for months at a time, did not respond to requests for status, had to be threatened to get a response, did not file paperwork in a timely manner, did not have appropriate "presence" in court (too timid). She's no longer in Campbell, btw.

I hired Jessica initially to help with visitation and support for a move to a different state. She wrote up the document but didn't fight very hard to get me the child support recommended by California State, it was about half of what California said I should get, then when I contacted her again to rewrite this document with a new schedule and child support associated she totally dropped the ball when she couldn't get my ex-husband's financial information then wouldn't return a call or email for over 2 years. I finally got the half written document from the receptionist after Jessica left the firm. So now I'm out tens of thousands of dollars in child support which could have gone for my sons college education. I'm also terrified to go to any other lawyer for fear they are going to take $10,000 for not much work.

Worst experience with this firm. They are just making a money with chit chat and put you in trouble - Lawyers of this firm are not capable to provide strong arguments - They will put you in trouble and make your simple case to more complex - Today I am completely broken because of them. They will promise you for number of things but at the end they will make you loose your case. I strongly recommend you to not go with this firm as you are just a project for them and they simply make money out of you and at the end you are at the loosing end - So far I learned that you should fight your case by your own - They are not here to help you but to make money out of you.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
