Cynthia Harris is the lawyer for anyone looking for a winning case. My divorce case took 7 years and had gone to trial. I was the respondent who left the marriage and was absent raising my children for 7 years. Cynthia’s 43 years family law experiences played a huge part of winning the case of sole physical and custody of the children. She is pleasant, compassionate, and have a winning strategy that is rare in the industry. 5 stars for Cynthia Harris and will definitely recommend her law expertise to divorce cases.

I was shocked when Svetlana couture took things that happened and put an extreme spin on them in order to completely win over my ex during our custody battle. Thank goodness I have a moral compass and knew that I was the most fit parent and her illegal practices were entirely WRONG, EXTREME, and completely not illegal. So if your looking to lie in court, hurt your children, and have someone completely defame your ex in a custody case she is the lawyer for you.

Svetlana is a great lawyer! She helped me get through a messy and lengthy custody battle. Her dedication to serving children is estounding! She comprehends finer points of such battle and her solutions are always focused on the best interests of the child. I hope I don't need her help again, but if I do - she is the one to call!

4 years ago I was facing serious consequences for an incident that changed the course of my career and life. Thanks to Gary Barthel and his team, he helped fight for me to get a better outcome and navigate the process to be able to complete the court requirements to reduce the punishment and ultimately expunge my record. If you're active duty or a veteran in any kind of trouble with civilian or military law I would recommend getting in touch with military law center.

I am a combat veteran, with 10 years of service. In the fall of 2020, I received a call from the Public Defender’s office asking me if I was going to use their services. I told her that she must have the wrong number. She confirmed that she in fact had the correct number. She went on to tell me I was being indicted on two felony counts for attempting to exercise my 2nd Amendment right to purchase a shotgun. I thought, “This is some kind of joke.” It was not. In the summer of 2016, I was taken to a hospital by the police for an alcohol related incident. Prior to leaving the hospital for home, I apparently signed a document acknowledging that I could not purchase a firearm for 5 years. I don’t remember this or really anything about that night. After becoming sober, four years later in December 2019, I attempted to purchase a shotgun so I could teach my son to shoot. On the 7th day of the 10-day waiting period I received a phone call that the gun store could not release the weapon to me. I didn’t know why. Two months later I was contacted by an investigator asking why I tried to purchase a gun. “You are barred from owning a firearm” he said. This was news to me. He explained that almost four years earlier I was given what’s called a 5150. This means that a doctor had determined that I am a danger to myself and others. I don’t remember ever hearing those words from a doctor. I was given a public defender who, in my opinion, did nothing but try to intimidate me into taking the prosecutor’s deal. I refused because I honestly did not know that I was a barred person and was willing to fight for my 2nd amendment right, even if that meant I might become a convicted felon. It seemed like the DA’s office and the public defender both just wanted me to go away. I was getting irritated with the way the whole situation was developing. Finally, I was fed up. I started asking around for any effective attorneys who truly believed in our constitutional rights and that wouldn’t try to extend the case in order to increase their bill. A veteran neighbor suggested Attorney Gary Barthel at the Military Law Center. Mr. Barthel is a veteran himself and so I felt he could understand the nuance of this case. What he discovered blew my mind. After retaining Mr. Barthel, he immediately started to examine the evidence and determined the 5150 determination, that I was threat to myself or others, was not properly assessed in accordance with California law. Additionally, Mr. Barthel also determined I was denied a required hearing to appeal California’s 5-year ban to purchase a weapon. Based upon the results of his investigation, Mr. Barthel was able to convince the District Attorney’s office to dismiss the charges. It took Mr. Barthel only a few months to get all charges dropped. Attorneys are expensive so it is important to find one that is efficient. Mr. Barthel was able to win the case and since it was done so quickly, my total bill was very reasonable. I was also refunded the unused portion of the retainer. I don’t plan on ever needing a criminal defense attorney again, but if I do, I’m calling Gary Barthel. He is very competent, and I would highly recommend his services.

I was so surprised to see how easy and inexpensive it was to divorce using mediation with Belinda. I have heard so many really terrible stories about getting divorced I didn't know it could be this fair and fast. It is so much easier when you can work with your ex instead of hiring separate lawyers and fighting in court!!!" Belinda was amazing, where she made me and my ex feel comfortable with the mediation process right away, and she was extremely punctual in answering and calls and responding to my emails, even when I contacted her after hours. The process was quick and painless as compared to folks I talked to that used attorneys. I will definitely recommend Belinda Rachman for divorce mediation.

When I needed his help, I truley had help. Knowledgable, professional, and yes: Kind ! This attorney helped me through a very rough patch in my life. Things were settled quickly and what was the Best, no one got hurt or even offended. Truth and fairness won out, and this is what I like best about Rickard Borg.. His devotion to fairness and the Facts. Am overwhelmed by his ability to see the " human" side of things... and be more than reasonable with his Fees. Things got settled correctly and we were treated with the utmost compassion and respect. Rick Borg comes highly recommanded by us.. we owe him a host of gratitude and wish that his type of lawering would be Norm I just had to say all this because of the gratitude I have and for the help he was to me and my family. Has a complete lack of knowledge of the law. Gives client information about the law that is incorrect. This incorrect information leaves the client vulnerable to excessive damages. Says he knows all in real estate law, and will insult you when you present him with the correct information you researched. Then tells you to do more research to further prove the case. Very condescending and rude. Does not advise his clients appropriately. Wish I had never had to deal with him.

Because of Steven, my divorce has been low cost and without drama. Steve has been brutally honest with me in regards to what I’m entitled to but also has fought relentlessly for me without adding unnecessary drama. He has been honest, moral, aggressive, empathetic, and competent. I would guess that any bad review I see is likely from someone who is difficult to work with.

Attorney Steven Fritsch was appointed Minor's Counsel for my son for very concerning reasons. Even with many requests to do his job, Steven has proven to be incompetent in protecting and advocating for my son -- 50 days with zero contact with my son (15-year-old). It takes five minutes to call my son. Steven has also been very unprofessional. In my first phone call with him, I respectfully asked him, "What's the game plan?" Instead of an empathetic message along the lines of "I'm sorry your family is in this situation. I will be contacting the professionals involved and do my best to represent your son," Steven Fritsch's approach was extremely harsh, rude, and unprofessional: "I don't need to tell you my plan. I don't need your approval." Clearly, our experience of working with him has been very unpleasant and frustrating.

Mr Ferreira took my case with 2 weeks of anticipation for evidentiary hearing, my case has been going on for 8 years and there is a volume of actions in the history of the case. I wanted to recover my lost joint legal and increase my custody time with a female judge that has not been sympathetic with rights of the father. He said he was going to be prepared and spent time studying my case but that he also had other cases that he needed to finish. At our hearing, he was not able to litigate the credibility of the moms allegations or present valid objections to the opposing party arguments. I didn't feel protected or looked after much less defended or advocated. Seem like he was putting up a show with no direction or goal and did not presented or establish evidence correctly in front of the judge. This greatly help my opponent. In addition, after he was told to prepare OAH, took 9 months to submit to Judge for final approval. This is clearly against the local rules which established a clear period of time if opposing counsel don't respond. I will definitively stay away from this attorney do not recommend. Don't waste your money.

Please beware of this attorney. Her severe lack of ethics directly harms the children she "represents" as Minor's Counsel. She makes alliances...and self-interest/money supplants children's safety, well-being, best interests and justice & truth. There is a shocking underbelly to the San Diego Family Court system particularly North County. Do very careful research and please protect your children regardless of whether you are the mother or the father.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
