I called John Jensen because my husband was on probation in Delaware County but we had it transferred down here to Florida since we had moved here. We had gotten an approval to take a trip back home for Christmas and tend to our business in October from the probation department in Florida but when my husband went to his p.o. office 2 days before our flight, his supervisor reversed her approval and claimed she had no authority to let me husband travel outside of the state of Florida. We tried calling our lawyer and a 2nd one who both either said they weren't sure if the judge was in this week, or they tried to get a motion in and were not able to get the case on the docket. I should mention I called other lawyers on Weds. and they didn't let me know they couldn't do it until Thurs or Fri(I was leaving on Sat) and I retained Jensen on Thursday at 2:30p.m. and his assistant Leah Beswick had the motion in the next a.m. Thursday they attempted to reach the probation officer and supervisor down here to work on that end before going to the judge. Leah called me at 4:45p.m. Fri and sent the motion that was granted! Leah offered to stay in the office a little late in case we had any issues getting the travel permit and at 5:02 my husband got travel permit from Florida p.o.! They did not comply easily even after the motion was approved, Leah had to go to bat for us and explain why Ohio had the jurisdiction and not Florida. No other attorney was willing to do the work, in fact they lied and blamed the availability of the judge for why they couldn't do it before our flight. Leah and Jensen got it done and had no issue getting into the judges office. They were honest and said they couldn't guarantee anything but they were going to do everything they could in 24hrs. Leah also sent me multiple email updates because she knew I was very stressed not knowing if we were leaving the next day or not, and even when I was emailing her when she said she would let me know if she heard anything....she still replied and never ignored me when most lawyers would be annoyed, she understood. I would highly recommend them and Jensen has the best legal assistant I've ever worked with! Usually I am not happy when an attorney has their legal assistant help me but Leah was not a typical legal assistant and it felt like I was dealing with a top lawyer in Delaware.....because I was! If you need a lawyer Jensen and Laura should be your first and last call!

He settled my claim within a short time after I finished treating for my injuries and got me a very fair settlement. He and his staff kep me informed, answered my questions and were compassionate and knowledgeable. I highly recommend Attorney Jensen.

My father passed away and it was a very trying time for me. I needed probate assistance and legal advice. Through an odd set of circumstances I ended up contacting Manos, Martin & Pergram and spoke to Kathleen Johnson. She provided me with valuable help and insight, even before we met in person. The firm was further away from me than other law offices, but after meeting and working Kathleen, I knew I made the right decision. If I need legal assistance in the future, Kathleen will be my first contact.

After 11 years of trying to move forward, struggling to advance in my career and denied life insurance, I contacted Carlos Crawford. Within 4 months Carlos helped me get 3 different felony convictions expunged from my criminal record. Two weeks after I received a raise at my job after passing a background check. I’m due for another promotion after I take a test and pass it. I’m in the process of getting a better life insurance policy/premium. It’s like the weight of the world has been lifted off my shoulders. I feel better and my anxiety level is much lower than before. If you want to get your life back and move forward with second guessing yourself, call Carlos Crawford. Even if he can’t help he will at least try before he say he can’t. He’s a man of his word.

Scott handled my case so well, he is a very knowledgeable and efficient attorney. He responds quickly and was extremely helpful as well as being patient and compassionate with me while I navigated a process I had never been through before. He explained things clearly and helped to put my mind at ease during a difficult time. Upon first meeting he and his lovely secretary, Dawn, I felt confident that I was in good hands... that certainly proved to be true. I appreciate them both so much!

Mr. Warnock is an outstanding attorney! My husband and I hired Mr. Warnock to represent us in a custody trial for our nieces & nephew. Within such a short period of time he was able to personally connect with us and he quickly understood every dynamic of this very sensitive situation. Mr. Warnock & his staff are very thorough & professional. I was referred to Mr. Warnock by several different people and I completely understand why he was so highly recommended. I would also highly recommend Mr. Warnock to anyone in need of an attorney.

Not only would I not chose this lawyer to represent me, but I would be cautious of his ethics, he may tell you he wants the best for you and your family, but believe me he does not; he was involved with my case and as soon as he got tired of the process he started bailing out. ( he'll tell you to not pay a mortgage and let your spouse go down in flames rather than hold up what the court orders them to do )

Exorbitant cost for a lawyer that wasn’t honest with the reality of results. I guess it was business as usual. The laws are criminal. I guess because lawyers make up the laws. Details I guess don’t matter. It’s a shame that people hire lawyers and the other party has to hire them to defend themselves. What a waste of money. Figures most lawyers are on the left. They’re so tied into the government and are brainwashed. Hire a cheaper lawyer who is more honest!

This lawyer charges a flat fee. He gets paid every so many months. Weather he does any work or not. I used him in my divorce case until I had to let him go. We agreed verbally in court on a divorce agreement. After six months of this lawyer putting minimal effort into getting this matter settled. I ran out of money and had to go to court myself.

I was a client of this attorney. He was always about the money and failed to follow up most issues with my case. I had gotten Scott anointed to me from municpail court in Delaware county, and he was great. He gave me the best advice and gave me the best options on what to do with my case. As I wasn’t happy at first and completely ignored and treated him truly bad months later he got appointed to my same case and even though I treated him poorly he was very professional and took my case again as I apologized and he still fought and stood by what he said he would do and get the best deal for me for which he absolutely did 100% stuck to his word. I paid my retainer fee up front. He came off as very promising and after he got his money did virtually nothing!! I could have done a better job representing myself. He either didn't respond to emails and phone calls or took weeks to get back and still didn't answer questions. He did not even try to represent me in the court room. My suggestion is run far away from this guy and find a real lawyer!

I cannot recommend their services. The work was good but their billing follow up is atrocious. They forgot to apply a payment of slightly over $1600 to my retainer that I had to catch and tell them they charged me for. My case was then finalized in the first week of October and I had to contact them twice, once the week of thanksgiving and once more this week, to get my retainer refunded. I would avoid and seek services elsewhere.

Hired Rod for an emergency custody case and turned into a complete disaster. Started off with already having a case at there office and another case arose from the first case. We’ll to start it off Rod said there was no charge for the “consultation” so we went to court and he had Tami with him from his office and they were absolutely ridiculous. The judge knew the defendant was lying but Rod and Tami had all the evidence and not one time showed anything. After we left court we decided to terminate with them because they were such a joke. So long story short that “free consultation” turned into almost 900$ just for that, then show up to court and Tami who was “representing “ us with Rod did nothing in court. All this lawyer firm is overpriced paper pushers. Don’t call them save your money and fight for yourself by yourself before you call these people!!!

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
