Absolutely, hands-down the best attorneys office I have ever worked with. I had a sample incident, more of a misunderstanding with the authorities located there in Durham, and the attorneys got right on it. Not only were they able to Get that charge thrown out, but also help to save My current medical career and my future law enforcement career. A small understanding was blown completely out of proportion, But these guys went in and cleared it up with no issues at all. I highly recommend them to anyone and even though I am over two hours away if anything ever happens again, they will be my first go to! I appreciate your office so much and the honesty, transparency and professionalism that you guys represent. I really wish you would get a I really wish you would get an office in Robeson County 😁Thank you.

STAY AWAY IF YOU DON'T WANT TO LOSE YOUR SURROGATE. It appears communication is not at the top of their list. Me and my wife hired Milan Phan to complete our Surrogacy agreement with our surrogate. Because of their lack of urgency we may have lost our surrogate. They have been working on it for 3 months, an agreement that we already had completed. Meaning they didn't need to negotiate anything. When I reached out to them to get guidance on things, they actually thought I had my own attorney. Something we never expressed and find extremely weird to be honest. Regardless, we cleared that matter up and I have now called 3 times to request a call back from our attorney over a 10 day mark with NO response. My next step is contacting the North Carolina Bar and reporting them for lack of communication. Something an attorney can lose their license for. I just find it crazy that I have to threaten that to get a response from our attorney.

Not only did she believe in me, she actually understood my deteriorated situation and felt enough compassion to work with me on the terms of her retainer. Allowing me ample time and opportunity to pay her in installments up to the point of my court date. I appreciated the fact that she was upfront with me as well as very informative in light of what to expect as my case progressed. I know that having a well-versed attorney surely can influence the outcome of ones case. She maintained positive contact with me throughout and handled my case very professionally and to be quite honest, she even followed through with me on the aftermath of my case, although the term of the retainer had expired. It is this--her heart-felt compassion for people and her work in her community, that led me to Mrs. Williams. As I told her, it was truly a blessing to have met her; to bring about the process of total reconciliation of my legal affairs. May I submit Attorney Nisha G. Williams, as highly favored and most highly recommended as a multi-faceted and extremely capable attorney for a myriad of general or even specialized concerns a person may have. (services rendered July 2015 thru Oct. 2015)

Ms. Williams took on our custody case and although she was "affordable", she lacked experience in custody, domestic violence and abuse issues. After we hired her, she did not speak in our hearing and allowed another lawyer, unfamiliar with our case, to take the lead in court, resulting in evidence and information that we had gathered not being presented to the judge on our behalf. Subsequently, we lost custody of our child. We sent numerous documents to Ms. Williams that we felt supported our case, and even though she acknowledged receipt of those items in a timely manner, we felt that she did not properly review them to set our case up in court. Ms. Williams gave us advice about child-support that we later found was inaccurate; and did not inform us entirely of our rights as we asked her to do. Her last-minute, night-before the hearing phone call about "how we were going to approach this" (our case) left us uneasy, very disturbed and completely anxious all night and though the court hearing. We felt very unrepresented and that she did the least possible for the money given to her (which was a lot for our family). We were very disappointed with her "services."

To start, let me say shame on me for not doing enough research to protect my family from getting taken advantage of. I thought that researching lawyers in the area, checking online reviews and following up with a call to speak with someone at this firm about my estate planning needs would have sufficed, but after the experience I had, I’ve learned that I need to educate myself (and others) much more about what to expect. I called their office to learn more about the firm's estate planning process, fees, etc. I spoke with William. He was very nice and informative (so I thought). He told me to set up an initial consultation for which there would be a charge ($150 for up to 30 minutes, $250 for 60 minutes). When I asked what the fees were for the creation of a will, POA, etc., he didn’t know specifically. I asked if the consultation fee would be rolled up into the cost of the estate planning. He didn’t know, but asked Tiffany. He came back and said yes, that’s often the case. My wife and I adjusted our work schedules and picked up our 10 month old daughter early from daycare to come to the consultation. It lasted no more than 20 minutes. Frankly, everything that was shared was stuff we could have read about online for free. During this chat, we learned that the firm charges a flat fee of $1,000/person for the will and two power of attorney documents. And that the $150 consultation fee doesn’t apply to flat fee scenarios. For us personally, the consultation didn’t add value for the price we paid. We didn’t have to have it in person. They could have easily shared those basics via the firm's website or we could have read about them elsewhere online. That would have saved us $150. All possible if the person that answers the phone is equipped to answer questions from potential clients about what they’re actually going to get out of the in-person consultation. In posting this review, my hope is that you're able to better educate yourself on the topic/process so that you can better spend your hard earned dollars.

Mr. Ellis represented me in a very unusual and tense custody case. From the moment I walked into his office, I was treated with respect and consideration from the entire staff. There was not a single moment during the process of preparing for court or in court that I was not confident in our strategy or Mr. Ellis' capability to represent my interests. Mr. Ellis was also a consummate professional even in response those who were not. It was very apparent that he was well respected by both the judge and other attorneys. And the outcome was exactly what I'd hoped for. Considering Mr. Ellis is one of the best attorneys for custody and divorce matters in North Carolina, his fees are incredibly reasonable. The way his office handles and bills cases is precise, conscientious and designed to benefit the client. The only thing I wish I'd done differently is be a better listener. Do everything Gray tells you to do!

In 2012 I hired Gray Ellis as my family lawyer in a child custody case. He was able to get me more time that I had originally agreed too. Throughout the case, Gray kept in contact with me. If I called and Gray wasn't able to answer me at that moment, contact was made within 2 hours during regular business hours. If it was after business hours, I was contacted within 3 to 4 hours. While all this is great, the thing that impressed upon me most was that Gray was more about giving me the best outcome for my money rather than the most money for the best outcome.

NicholsonPham has been my go-to for legal advice and services since moving to Durham from NYC in 2011. Their approachable expertise, warm professionalism and die-hard commitment to using lawyering for the greater good has made getting my legal ducks in order an empowering process. That alone has prompted me to refer them to countless friends and colleagues. But Milan Pham has forever won my awe and gratitude for understanding my resistance to having to "adopt" the child I birthed and working with us to find an alternate legal route to getting our family acknowledged and protected. Her values-centered creativity, commitment to the rights of my family, and brilliant legal mind turned this maddening experience into a moment of jubilant and tender-hearted dignity.

Hiring Catherine Pavur to guide me through my divorce was undoubtedly one of the best decisions I have made. Catherine guided me though every part of the divorce process with compassion, accuracy, legal expertise, and with an added benefit of being a wonderful person to work with. Her knowledge and experience made the beginning stages of working through the complexity of detailing, separating, and documenting assets a doable process. At each stage where appearances in court were required her guidance turned those appearances from a dreaded unknown to a reasonably comfortable experience. Her experience and knowledge proved invaluable when I had to go through a deposition where she worked with me and advised me on possible pitfalls that, without her, I most likely would have fallen ignorantly into. In the final stage where the court ordered a mediation process where Catherine watched out carefully and fought for my benefit I must thank her for her advice on every offer and counter offer. For it worked out that in the end, with her suggestions and analysis that I was able to pursue the path that I desired and believe I was meant to follow with very little debt and able to retain sufficient assets needed to pursue that course. My sincerest thanks Catherine.

Because of this firm, specifically Ethan Timmins, I can sleep at night knowing my daughters will be ok. After a four day trial, I got sole legal custody of my daughters. I don’t know how much I can post publicly about the details of my high conflict case, however I will say that, my marriage and custody battle were traumatic for me and I don’t know how I could’ve gotten through it without Mr. Timmins. I could not have asked for a better lawyer, he was more than a lawyer. He was a true advocate, almost felt like a friend who really cared about the safety and well-being of my young children. I am a very anxious person and he never made me feel like a burden. Mr. Timmins was so patient with me. The exceptional knowledge and professionalism at this firm enabled a successful outcome for me. I would refer this firm to anyone. I have known other lawyers, and I am also an attorney myself, and I cannot explain the feeling of complete confidence and relief to know that you are in the hands of somebody you can trust 100%. I am so grateful to this firm And Ethan, you are our guardian angel. I will never forget what you did for my daughters. How you fought for them to have a normal life and to help me throughout this struggle, maintain myself and my own emotional stability so that I could care for them during this process. I am forever grateful.

As I started my divorce journey, in 2019, I was assigned Ethan Timmins. Ethan has stood beside me in my most uncertain and some of the most difficult times in my life, without hesitation. He has helped me stay strong throughout the years and not only has my best interests at hand, but my child’s. While Ethan is my primary lawyer, Cherie has also been instrumental in my journey. Hands down I would recommend Patrick Law to anyone going through a divorce. I have tried other law firms, prior to finding Ethan, and just wasted money and basically told to hand over all my money to my ex, because there is nothing they can do. Ethan has given me my life and joy back and continues to guide me as complications arise. Thank you Cherie Patrick Law for all you have done and continue to do for me!

As I'm now seeing this is the same complaint in many other reviews. I was just yelled at by an attorney because I was asking questions. Find another law firm! I was given info on LegalShield through a representative who came to my job. I signed up and had a matter that I needed legal assistance with. I called and spoke with an attorney who was extremely unprofessional, he kept cutting across me, jumped to conclusions and offered me no options to help resolve the matter, stated that the representative who spoke to the employees lied and gave misinformation, was NOT empathetic to my situation, very cold and lacked decorum. I called back to report it to a customer service representative and she never apologized for my bad experience or encounter, she too was non empathetic. This law firm has individuals who lack social and emotional awareness for people who call and are just trying to get some direction and insight. And even if you can't help, it's a way to do and say things. From the other reviews I'm seeing, I'm not shocked at the experience I had today. LegalShield certainly needs other attorney options for NC!

Burton charged a pretty penny then when things were culminating to a ruling she asked the judge to bail on the case. When the judge said no she got insulting in our meetings and had both parties visit her office to make "settlement". This is not an ethical move, as I came to find later. Bottom line : she sold me down the river to satisfy her own agenda, despite charging a hefty fee. Many years have passed and her actions during that tumultuous time have continued to cost me, in the form of near zero visitation with 2 children for many years. Hiring her was a lifelong mistake!

Ms. Burton is thorough, intentional, and the epitome of professionalism. I've worked with her for almost 2 years on a particularly contentious custody case. Ms. Burton was honest with me about where my expectations should be and diligent in making sure that the ultimate outcome was what was best for my family. There was not one aspect of my case that was overlooked - her attention to detail is unparalleled. She is brilliant, savvy, and aggressive when necessary. Divorce/support I really should of considered the reviews before I signed and made payments. She seemed great until a little while after the first payment. Near the end she wanted to "further review" my account statements to verify income which had already been repeatedly verified as ssi/ssdi. To which I declined. To which her response was "If you do not comply I will be withdrawing from your case". Something she had already tried to do once before. I practically begged for her to please find a path forward. I was met with "you just want to take her to court". No, I wanted help. Didn't even make it to having a court date. I'm financially collapsing. Personally I think she wanted those statements to either see if she could charge me more (just to review them even) or to turnover to the "Defendant". I'm overall pretty disappointed. Nobody would take my case except for her. She talked good. Though I was repeatedly warned by my postal carrier about this attorney. Guess I should of listened? To her credit I'll at least say she's quite responsive. I'm sure she will have some sort of response for this. Refute it if you like but this is what occurred. I should probably edit this and go even further in depth. This is a decent summary for now.

We hired Laurice for an emergency custody order. The language of the order needed to be changed in order for law enforcement to legally remove my daughter from the home. She refused to change it. When she finally decided to have it changed, the order was STILL wrong. She refused to hear the legal advice the sheriffs explained to me. In her exact words "She knows the law." She had advised me to serve the order to the person myself after being aware of him and I going to criminal court for him assaulting me. Her exact words were "What are you scared for if you have your grandmother & boyfriend with you???" I cannot make this up. She filed a motion to withdraw because the judge asked me directly if I had a question, and I asked one valid question. She stormed out the court room leaving me in front of the judge. Immediately after court she was waiting outside the door to tell me "she is no longer my attorney." Lie #1. She was still my attorney until the judge approved her motion to withdraw. In her motion to withdraw form she emailed me she said "I terminated the relationship between her and I." (lie #2) and told me to sign it. Of course, I refused and explained why. Because it was not the truth. She then emailed me a new motion of withdrawal form and took the false statement out. She talked over me many times to prevent me from communicating any questions or concerns to her. She has hung up on me. She has been very rude and bitter after our first payment to her. Her ego was very big for someone who did not help my case at all. She left it up to me to communicate to the courts myself after hiring her. After doing so, I was finally able to get my daughter returned to me. What was suppose to be a process in a matter of days turned into weeks because she does not do her job. During those three weeks my daughter was in harms way when she could have been home long ago. She still decided to keep our money after doing nothing but gave us a "professional discount." She is very bitter, I'm not sure who hurt her but she does more harm than good. These are false reviews. Real reviews from real people are on google.

An attorney who knows Mr. Read very well told me that Dan has taken the positions he has in family law cases out of ignorance. During the conversation I told that attorney that I couldn't understand how a well educated man could do so other than he must only be concerned with money, and that I wished Mr. Read knew the negative impact he had on our children and our community when he uses the courts to alienate father's from their children. I could never describe to you the anguish that my child demonstrated because Dan saw to it to have her father placed in a jail while knowing I was struggling. As a teeneger my daughter still talks about how ill conceived his positions seem to be and how poor his behavior must have been to do this to a childs parent. (...) the father plays an important role in childhood development. He must be a model for the boy and a precursor of a lover for the girl. If he decides that bringing up children is the woman's job, his children are in trouble." - Dr. John E. Sarno Mr. Read has a long history of attacking people at a personal level, filing frivilous motions, making false statements to the courts and filing orders that are not factually indicative of what occured in the courtroom. He is especially contemptuous toward fathers in spite of maintaining the persona of an upstanding christian, community man and father. When asked what I would tell him if he asked me what I felt of him I replied ~ 'You should be ashamed of yourself.'

I hired Camilla to help with my divorce and child custody. I was left unsatisfied, misinformed, misled, and broke. Camilla frequently missed court appearances, yet still charged me. My case never even made it in front of the judge as I was told I didn't have enough money to continue and I needed to settle. After speaking with others, I was told how unprofessionally she handled my case. I'm now having to find a new lawyer and I'm starting over with my custody hearing. I did not feel I was properly represented and my voice was never heard. I am deeply saddened and heartbroken over how the case has turned out and my goal is to help others avoid what I went through. She eventually stopped answering my questions or even helping me. She only calls when it's time to pay my bill. I never received notification that she was no longer representing me. One day she just stopped returning my calls and emails. Do research before choosing Camilla.

Reba said she wanted $15,000 CASH UPFRONT! We asked to pay $5000 upfront. Reba ‘demanded’ ALL or none. She said: “when I through my hat in the ring; I am in for the count.” My daughter lost her home and all her property and custody of her son; under continued on-going physical and emotional abuse; all of which, we made Reba totally aware of. $30,000 later, my daughter is destitute and trying not to die. Reba refuses to answer our inquires or show the slightest bit of remorse. Reba not only moved without notifying us; made us file our own papers; did nothing about existing restraining orders; but told my young battered daughter (without ever speaking to me) to “shut up” and sign the papers allowing her, then, husband and Grandparents, to take possession of the property and child. This may sound like “sour grapes” and it IS; however, as God is my witness, it is TRUE, and does little to reflect the Nightmare we have been through and continue to go through, in part, thanks to this unhappy experienceL.

Mrs. Constantinou probably gave me the worst advice of my entire life that indirectly led to the separation of my two young children from me. Later, she refused to respond to my concerns and questions I had. She went mute and ignored my emails. I do not recommend Mrs. Constantinou, particularly in the field of family law. I am able to add more details if requested.

I used this attorney once and she was great. I needed her services a year latter and it was like a difference person. I paid her in full to file a motion on my behalf and six months went by and the motion was never filed. I called her several times and I was always told I will file it Friday. Well Friday never came so I asked for a full refund. I finally received my refund and hired another attorney. If possible do not pay her till you are walking in court.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
