The custody process even when it should be cut and dry, never is, and is scary. There is SO much on the line. My ex had criminal and drug problems but can work the system and has no prison record. The mediator wanted to give my lil guy to this druggie half time when he'd never raised him. My baby had never been without me, or my parents, or out of my reach, and suddenly I might have to let him go hours away to someone he didn't know. I was terrified and angry. This man had done so much damage to our lives I couldn't let him ruin this perfect being I had grown and almost died birthing. To top it off, my son is globally delayed and diagnosed with MR. So if something happened to him, my son couldn't tell me or anyone. Michelle was recommended to me and was an amazing advocate for my son and I. She is not only a great attorney, she specializes in cases with special needs children. I couldn't have asked for someone more understanding of my situation or better fitted to represent my son and what was best for him. I truly felt that she handled the paperwork for me, but represented my son, and spoke for him in a time of panic for me. She made the court see him, and not just a name on a docket. Through every step she was strong and committed and fought with grace and integrity, no name calling or even stooping when the other side tried. Michelle truly rose above and came to our aid at a time I as a mother, wasn't able to fight, but instead protected my son by letting her do what she is great at. There was nothing I couldn't tell her and she made me feel listened to and like my son was her priority and not just another case or check. Thank you Michelle!

I was one of those women who thought they couldn’t afford or need an attorney for my child custody conflict. The process of changing custody orders and adjusting child support was one of the most overwhelming situations I have ever faced. After stumbling through the initial process and making several mistakes, Michelle Stowell was referred to me by a very trusted colleague. She immediately made me feel empowered and assured. Her professional expertise and compassion were very comforting throughout the entire process and led to a successful outcome for me and my daughters. Thankfully, when I realized I needed an attorney, I chose her! If I could go back in time the only thing I would change is to hire Michelle from the very beginning of my divorce process. I highly recommend Michelle Stowell for anyone battling for their family rights. She was my lifer-saver in a treacherous sea of uncharted waters.

There are very few "bigger deals" in life than Child Custody Matters. After interviewing several attorneys, many high powered, high dollar attorneys, it was Joe Hoffman who I chose to represent me in court. Not only did I have to appear in court as a respondent with risk of losing time with my child, I had to defend untrue accusations that were being made against me. I could not have chosen a better attorney to help navigate this process, especially when so much fear and emotion was involved. Joe cuts right to the chase. There is no fluff and no wasted time. Because I have gone through a lengthy and very costly divorce, I understand how the process can work and situations can drag on and on and attorney fees multiply. Joe was very methodical and strategic. He knows exactly what he is doing to get his clients desired outcome. I am so fortunate and blessed to say that not only did the mediator not grant the additional time away from me, the court granted more custody for me than we had originally anticipated. Joe continues to council me on challenging situations that arise. His suggestions and council have been 100% accurate and I am deeply grateful for his knowledge and experience.

After I won my case in family court the opposition file for an appeal in the appellate courts. Mr. Purcell was high recommended to me by my attorney when I knew I needed a attorney that specialized in appeals cases. I meet with Mr. Purcell in his office, he was very nice and genuinely interested in my case. He was very generous with his time as I explained my situation. I appreciated him explaining what the appeals process would be like, and what to expect. After our conversation I knew he was the right person for the job. And I could be at ease knowing that Matt would be fighting on my behalf. I feel very fortunate that Matt took my case because it was a very complex one, and I had a lot on the line and could not have the ruling overturned. The last several months I have gotten to know Mr. Purcell and his staff. Not only is Matt kind and sympathetic attorney but most importantly he's smart, experienced an extremely knowledgeable about the law. Plus he's hard working and takes great pride in his work. In my particular case he spent countless hours to insure that my case was detailed as possible. The work Mr. Purcell has put into my case has been impressive, and I am satisfied in all the work he has put into my case. Matt and his great staff has always kept me well-informed about my case. He has always been honest and upfront about my case which I greatly appreciate. I’m always able to get a hold of him when I need to. Matt or a member of his staff always responds to all my calls and emails promptly. I just feel really lucky to have Matt represent me in my case. And I would like to show my appreciation by putting up this review. And hopefully it can help those in need of a top-notch attorney. Which is a labor-intensive, time consuming and stressful process. His fees are really fair and competitive, and doesn't overcharge for his work. I get a detailed summary every month. And there office has worked with me financially. Not only is he a really good person but he’s well prepared, detail oriented and a strategists. He is someone that I can trust and have great confidence in. He always has my best interest in mind which make it easier for me rest my head at night. As I'm going through this difficult part of my life. I rested easier knowing that my case is in good hands and that he is doing everything possible for me since there is a lot at stake. Matt and his wonderful staff are one of the best ones around. You will not regret the decision to hire him to represent you.

Matt Purcell is, in a word, amazing. When we first met, we were grandparents trying to navigate through Probate court to keep guardianship of our grandchildren. Matt was wonderful at addressing everyone's needs, extremely communicative and articulate in court, and aware of exactly what we needed to do. He's also very endearing due to his kind nature. We would heartily recommend Matt to anyone, especially where children's well being is involved.

Thapar Law was highly recommended by my brother, and I couldn't be more grateful. My wife and I had just purchased a home and needed help with estate planning and some legal work. If you’re reading this review I cannot stress enough how amazing Thapar law is. My husband had a severe heart attack and had to go in for emergency surgery. We reached out to numerous law firms and nobody could service us in the appropriate time frame. We were unprepared for our situation as we are very young for this situation. Once we spoke to Mr Thapar he insured us he would take care of all our needs before the surgery which no other business would do. He was absolutely amazing to do business with. If you’re reading this please just call him you will not find a more professional and polite person to help you with all your needs. Mr. Thapar if you read this I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for what you did for our family. Thank you

Posting this review that was sent to Tiffany Andrews following completion of our service. This was never posted on her firm's website. We are writing to provide an objective review of our experience with Tiffany Andrews and her mediation services. Although Tiffany was pleasant to work with, our overall assessment is that the services provided were average. We were disappointed that we never had the opportunity to meet her in person, despite multiple trips to her office. During our case, we couldn't help but notice that the handling of our mediation proceedings resembled that of a general contractor overseeing a construction project. We encountered unexpected changes in Tiffany's team, with members coming and going without prior notice. This lack of consistency had a noticeable impact on the process and left us feeling unsettled. Another area of concern was the significant disparity between our original cost estimate and the final bill. The cost nearly doubled, which was unexpected and disappointing. Our mediation and divorce proceedings were minimal in complexity, as stated by Tiffany herself. Considering the simplicity of the case, we had hoped for more streamlined and cost-effective services. Throughout the process, there were instances where communication and continuity seemed lacking. We often had to repeat information from one meeting to the next, resulting in frustration and delays. It would have been more efficient and productive if there had been better coordination and a stronger sense of continuity between sessions. In summary, while Tiffany Andrews and her team were pleasant to work with, there are clear areas for improvement. Enhancing client expectation management, addressing cost transparency, and ensuring consistent communication and continuity throughout the mediation process would greatly benefit Tiffany and her team. These learning opportunities could elevate the quality of their services, providing clients with a more satisfactory experience. Tom and Naomi

Jenny Andrews at Andrews Family Law is an amazing attorney! She is bright, articulate, personable, efficient, organized, and effective. She explained the legal issues and problems to me very well, and had practical and sound solutions from them for the best outcome I could expect. As an attorney in another field myself, I know a great attorney when I meet one, and Jenny fits the bill. Feel confident in retaining Andrews Family Law. They have multiple Google links, so copying my review. Mr. Andrews was my (first) divorce attorney. Unfortunately, I was disabled at the time of my divorce, and Mr. Andrews never did as instructed, but I was too weak to change lawyers and my dad who was taking care of me didn't know what to do. My ex husband and I reached an agreement. I just needed a lawyer to give him the money. I noticed almost immediately that his office didn't work quite right -their secretary ran down the clock to the hour on one of the first calls, which stunned me, but I was too sick to care. Mr. Andrews also tended to drone on and not say anything useful. He also submitted things that made no sense to me or my dad. My dad tried, we tried so so hard to get him to send my ex husband money. We kept asking and asking. Then I got sicker, I told Mr. Andrews I was sicker, and while he didn't do anything much before then, he did absolutelynothing afterwards (he had one job, to pay my ex husband per our agreement. He never did it.My next divorce atty a very reputable lawyer, said Mr. Andrews filed the paper work incompletely for the divorce actually.) Then my ex husband, angry and not knowing the situation, thought I was stalling (I couldn't speak to anyone at the time, I was bedridden and couldn;t think. I'm crying as I write this. All these men scamming women is terrible. To be clear I paid everything for my husband- I was the sole breadwinner for four years while he went to school, then he abandoned me when I got sick. And he said, you can just hand me a check. He wanted half, and I just said, that's ridiculous. You're leaving me when I can't work. So we made an agreement). For about a year, Mr. Andrews did NOTHING and charged me $5000 for it. And my husband got half - of everything, including what really should have been money from before I was married, gifts from my parents, and, most awful, brain injury settlement money- which my ex husband had originally agreed not to touch. I can't describe to you all how traumatizing that is in the position I was in, to be nearly dead and dysfunctional and in pain, and your ex husband taking as much as he can. After I had switched lawyers to clean up his mess, Mr Andrews had the gall to ask for more money beyond the deposit. I said know, and he yelled at me over email when I finally said, after losing my ENTIRE 401K, I was not going to give him any extra money for bogus charges. Interestingly, my next atty said Mr. Andrews didn't do his job -at all. She was stunned that he hadn't just sent a check first THING. Remember, i was sick, and i also didn't /don't know how divorces work. Mr. andrews claimed he couldn't give any money immediately until 6 months had passed. I don't think this was true!! He will cover his incompetence with anger that someone says he didn't something ...not right. My next attorney had a good think on it and she knew, even though Mr. Andrews really "screwed me", there is nothing I can do because he didn't technically do mal practice. So, one star for this law firm for "technically not doing mal practice" but also doing absolutely nothing. I lost half my savings while I was sole breadwinner and this law firm is not apologetic, even when a reputable atty is shocked at the incompetence and their disregard.

Matthew took on our case (pro-bono) because it had been so mishandled by all previous attorneys. Here’s an excerpt: "Faced with an admittedly difficult decision, the trial court skirted the question entirely (of what custody arrangement would be in Katie's best interest when mother moves) and issued an order purporting to maintain the status quo. By issuing such an order, the trial court effectively prohibited mother from moving, which is an abuse of the court's discretion... Although it is ultimately the trial court's error that we review on appeal, the error here did not arise in a vacuum. Here, the genesis of the court's error can be traced directly to the failures of the court-appointed mediator and the minor's counsel.” May our attorney, Matthew Purcell, continue to flourish in his practice and know that We will be eternally grateful for his perseverance, intelligence, and integrity. What a better world this would be if all attorneys modeled his attributes!

Mr. Purcell represented me in a divorce and child custody case that took nearly 3 years to complete. His experience and demeanor was invaluable as he guided me through the process which involved manipulation, high conflict, unreasonable requests, false CPS reports and both parties moving out of state. Matt has been my rock through my legal separation. My case was complicated and involved several hearings for the court to determine whether California had jurisdiction over my request for a legal separation. Matt was able to successfully defend my request for a legal separation in California, which ultimately resulted in a stay of the out of state action and resolution of all issues in my case. Matt and his staff consistently communicated with me to make sure that I understood through every step of the process. And if I had questions, I was always able to speak with someone about my case and get answers whenever I reached out to his office. Matt and his staff, Dorinda and Kalli, were professional, compassionate, and knowledgeable throughout this process. Matt was also cognizant of costs and attempted to resolve the issues in my case without the need for court intervention at first. When he was faced with obstreperous conduct by my ex, he immediately responded assertively and prevented all of my ex’s impractical positions. I couldn’t have asked for a better advocate or better representation. I would highly recommend him!

Cyrus Zal was hired to represent myself and others in a lawsuit in San Diego County regarding a sit-down protest of an abortion mill. Hundreds of protesters showed up on a Saturday, and closed the facility for the day. Consequently, myself and many others were arrested for engaging in a peaceable protest, under the pretext of "trespassing". However, California law clearly states that trespassing is, indeed, legal, when done for the purpose of saving a life. For instance, entering your neighbor's home without permission is illegal. But entering your neighbor's home to save their child from a fire is perfectly legal. And yet, because the Judge in the case was a highly partisan Liberal, he not only refused to inform the jury of this law, he even took the unprecedented step of barring my Attorney from telling the Jury why the protesters were there; to save lives. In fact, (and this will shock any fair and reasonable person - regardless of political affiliation), he also banned the word "baby" from even being uttered in his courtroom. You see, if a mother is 6 months pregnant, and she sees her doctor for a sonogram, he will tell her, "Your baby is doing just fine." Even before birth, the child is obviously a baby. But in the courtroom of this Judge, using language and terms that every obstetrician in America uses to describe the infant in the womb, was suddenly verboten. Well, Cyrus Zal refused to accept this blatant trampling of the Civil Rights of his clients. He argued that if this was a civil trial in which a woman alleged that her unborn baby had been injured by negligence, this same Judge would allow the pre-born infant to be called a "baby". So, in a completely selfless and remarkable act of bravery, Cyrus Zal defied this Judge's tyrannical and politically-motivated despotism, and made our case anyway, using the language that he had been barred from saying aloud in Open Court. Needless to say, this Judge was furious, and told Attorney Zal that he would go to jail for Contempt of Court, immediately after the trial, for each and every utterance. Yet, Cyrus Zal was undeterred. He bravely and courageously defended his clients and our legal right to trespass in order to save lives. He was continually shut down by the Judge, and threatened repeatedly. And, yes, the Judge did, indeed, send him to jail after the trial. These were not empty threats. Tyrants mean what they say. But I have never forgotten what Cyrus Zal did for me and my companions. In 56 years, I have never witnessed a single attorney every show this degree of integrity and fearlessness in defending and representing their clients. Name for me a SINGLE attorney on this entire website who was willing to go to jail, (and who DID actually go to jail), in order to make sure that their clients were not railroaded and stripped of their Civil Rights, by a court that wantonly trampled the law? I contend that you could search literally thousands of attorneys here, and this may be the ONLY attorney who possesses that level of integrity. Cyrus Zal is the kind of man about whom movies are made. And just as people like Rosa and Martin had their Civil Rights trampled and abused, and suffered for it by unjustly being sentenced to time in jail, Cyrus Zal belongs in that rare pantheon of people who are willing to suffer for what is right, rather than timidly acquiesce to the whim of tyrants.

Mr.Zal represented me and my company in a civil litigation matter and did a great job. He was honest and upfront about fees, the process and what could happen. Mr. Zal not only saved us a lot of money but got us a great settlement as well. I would highly recommend.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.

  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
